  • This ambrosia maple log was cut just 3 weeks before it was made into this bowl. The wood is dripping green. To escape splitting during drying, I turned this bowl very thin. As it dries in the weeks following this video, it will develop a beautiful wavy rim.

    Man, that’s going to be awesome once it’s finished moving. I hope you will show the dry bowl when it is finished. If you don’t mind my asking, what do you think of the Robust tool rest? I have been thinking about getting one of those and would like your opinion. Thank you, Rick! 👏👏👏

      That Robust tool rest is a replacement for a Nova tool test that recently broke on me. The Robust tool rest is 15” long, and appears to be much better welded together. I haven’t used it too much yet, as I only got it recently. Thanks for watching, Gord.

      Thanks for watching, Andy. I got that stamp quite a few years back, and I don’t remember which online vendor I got it from. They had a design app on their website that made it fairly easy to lay it out. If you search for customized rubber stamps, you’ll find a lot of places that will make a stamp for you.

    Now THIS is how you make a turning video. Camera shots are stupendous! Shavings everywhere and I felt like they were landing on me too. At 4:23 is see the CC come up RING TOOL. Say what? That looks like a handy unit there. Do I need (want, same thing right) a new tool? Not enough o’s in cool to describe this video and the finished art piece. So glad you share your experiences, your knowledge and attention to detail. We can only watch in amazement. Little jealousy there too.

    • @RickTurnsWoodturning
      @RickTurnsWoodturning  3 роки тому

      Thank you, Cathy! I doubt that you need a ring tool right, they cut quite a bit differently than a carbide-tipped tool. But it is fun to use.

    I really enjoyed this video for some reason. You really out did yourself. I see you have a swing away for your lathe. Is that recent? Is it worth it? Thanks for sharing Rick.

    • @RickTurnsWoodturning
      @RickTurnsWoodturning  3 роки тому

      That swing-away tailstock attachment cost around $300. Worth it? It was to me, because when I’m doing tall vases, using a long hollowing tool, the tool handle kept hitting the tailstock. Of course, I could take the tailstock off, but that thing is heavy! Thanks for watching, Joseph.

    • @RickTurnsWoodturning

      Hi, Bill. I've had that rubber stamp so long that I've forgotten where I got it - it was when the rubber stamp companies were just getting onto the internet. There are a lot of websites that do custom rubber stamps now. Search Google for "customized rubber stamps", and find a site that lets you do designs in the webpage.

    • @RickTurnsWoodturning
      @RickTurnsWoodturning  3 роки тому +1

      That bumping of the gouge at that point is, I believe, caused by the uneven surface of the blank (one side higher than the opposite), combined with the relatively slow lathe speed - about 500 rpm at that point. Thanks for watching.
