Woodturning: FRANKENBOWL! Maple Burl Cap
Вставка
- Опубліковано 9 лип 2021
- This beautiful burl cap is big leaf maple. I purchased it on eBay for $25, and I think it was well worth the price. To keep the excellent texture of the top of the cap, I turned a small recess in the center of the top. Then I finished it with Watco Wiping Polyurethane.

oh not again Rick, nope just a void. Thank heavens. A nice peace of art Rick. great work
LOL! Thanks for watching and commenting, Paul.
You’ve gotta love a burl piece, Rick. You’ve done this one justice.
Thank you so much, Shaun.
You must be living right! The universe smiled on you! That's a really nice piece.
Yep, the universe wanted to scare the pants off me! Thanks for watching, Pat.
Rick you scare us wood turners. Glad this turned out to be so beautiful.
LOL! Thanks for watching, Paul!
Absolutely gorgeous, Rick!
Man, my heart sank when you thought you went through the bottom. Don't scare me like that!!
What a beautiful burl to start with and your design and finish only enhances it. Really like this, good job, Rick!
Phil
Thanks so much, Phil!
Like everyone else I gasped when I thought you went through the bottom. Whew! Dodged that bullet. Since I DID do that with the platter you helped me with, I know of a solution. Ha, ha. When you started I wasn’t sure which side should be the top or the bottom. Shows I’ve never turned a Burl bowl before! Love the finish and the final look. So unique. Thanks for sharing.
This was my first burl bowl. It wasn’t very thick and that kind of determined the shape. Thanks for watching, Cathy.
Superb looking piece fabulous Rick well done
Thanks for watching, Paul.
Top shelf piece, Rick! You sure has me in suspense when you saw the void. Thumbs up.
Thanks for watching and commenting, Ray.
That is absolutely eye-popping, stunning.

Thanks for watching, J.
Beautiful piece! Maple Burl has always been on the top of my favorites
That item turned out great. The chunk of burl cost me $50, but it was worth it.
@@RickTurnsWoodturning It definitely did, I love it. Now it's even more valuable than when you first bought the raw material.
That is a great burl. Well done Rick.
Thank you, Doug.
Absolutely stunning Rick
Thanks for watching and commenting, Donald.
Another stunner Rick! That’s a beaut!
Thanks so much, Jordan.

Morgan
Thanks for watching and for your comments, BAW.
Beautiful bowl Rick. You did justice to the burl cap. I have been using Watco finishes for years and have never been disappointed.
Thanks much for watching, Dan.
What a lovely bowl, very nicely done.👍👍👍
Thanks much for watching, Torbay.
Beautiful piece. Just lovely.
Thanks for watching and commenting, Tony
Wonderful piece Rick. Another great video as well.
Thank you, JCW.
Hi Rick, That is just sublime. Fantastic video. Take care Rick. Cheers, Huw
Thank you, Huw!
A great piece from which you took advantage. 👍
Thanks for watching, Jean.
I thought I was gonna say... you had a week like some of the other guys. Seems to be that kinda week, but you got lucky! I love that bowl Rick! Thanks for sharing your creativity with me again. Stay safe, Vickie
Thanks for watching and for your comments, Vickie.
Stunning bowl...I'm happy to say that I turned one that is nearly identical.
Thank you, Carol. I’d love to see your bowl - where did you get the burl from? I bought mine off eBay.
I bought the blank on eBay and my husband named it "Craters of the Moon". I emailed you the pictures.
Love the knobbiness!
Me too! Thanks for watching, Sheilah.
Looks great 👍
Thank you, MV.
That is a beautiful bowl Rick. Awesome work
Thanks so much, Jiggsy.
Love it. So glad you left a natural edge. Was afraid you would turn it away. Very nice piece.
Thanks for watching and commenting, AD
Pretty cool looking piece Rick ! And so glad you didn't funnel it out. Thanks for sharing🙏 Take care. -Mike😷
Thanks for watching and commenting, Mike.

Thanks so much, Radio.
That is beautiful Rick!!!
Enjoyed your video and I gave it a Thumbs Up
Thank you, Oneshot.
Beautiful piece Rick.
Thanks for watching, Carl.
That is a beauty Rick! I was not sure what to expect when you had to bleep something out. Glad it was a false alarm because I was thinking when you started what I might be cutting the cap off the big burl I have and make one of these. But I did not want to have to make a hole in mine LOL.
For sure you have one here I want to copy!
Gary
Thank you for your comments, Gary.
Another beauty!!!
Thank you, Peggy.
Outstanding work!
Thank you, ghostwriter.
Nice work love the sense of humor LOL ☺️👍🏽
Thanks for watching, Habeeb.
My heart stopped when that void showed up! Gorgeous!
Mine too, Lewis. I had been extra careful, I thought. What a relief it was to find out I hadn’t done that!
Awesome looking piece!
Thanks for watching, Bray.
What a great piece of wood! I really like the Watco Wipe on Poly. Didn’t seem to disappoint this time either!
Thanks for watching, Unruhly. The Watco is looking good. Much better than the various other wiping varnishes I have tried.
Beautiful frankenbowl Rick. I don't see the bolts in the side. Lol. Nice job my friend. Someday I'll get a hold of a burl. Thanks for sharing. Rc.
LOL! I had to remove those electrodes before I started. I had to buy that burl. I have a lot of “normal” wood, from trees cut down around here, the odd looking wood is what gets the most UA-cam views. Thanks for watching.
wow , it is beautiful.
Thank you, Joyce.
Beautiful!
Thank you, Skeeter.
Una hermosa pieza Rick !!! Saludos !!!!
Gracias por ver y comentar, Jose.

So Rick, who was the intelligent guy that warmed up the glue gun…suspense is killing me. Love the burl bowl by the way:) Keep well, Rob
LOL! Thanks much for watching, Rob.
Interestingly beautiful finished product! I did a loud Oh no! When I heard you say hole at the bottom. Glad it was not there, and to see two woodturning videos from you this week..
I didn't say "oh no" - what I said had to be bleeped out! Thanks for watching, Ma.
You did have a strong reaction...Glad that hole was not there and the project turned out beautifully. Less painful than the poplar vase.
Great job!
Thanks for watching, Dovecote.
Amazingly beautiful Rick! I’m going to start looking for burl now in eBay
Thanks much, Jojo!
Rick, glad it was only a void and you did not renew your membership in the funnel club. Maple burl caps are way too pretty to turn into waste wood! Simple and well done.
The burl cap is amazing - I was deathly afraid I was going to screw it up somehow. Thanks much for watching, Valerie.
Gorgeous bowl, Rick. Nice save. It was almost the most beautiful funnel. Lol. Awesome job.
Thanks, Copper.
Beautiful
Thank you, Mike.
Beautiful piece. It looks a lot like Aust Mallee to me.
What a beautiful burl! Great job Rick. I would love to find a piece of wood that nice. 👍
So would I. I had to buy that. It was $25 on eBay, but we’ll worth it. Thanks for watching, MH.
Beautiful piece! I see burls like that every time I go to woodcraft store. I can't see spending that kind of money on a burl so I don't buy it lol. Thanks for sharing! Take care and GOD BLESS!
Thanks much for watching, Stephen. I bought this burl off eBay - got it for $25, which was a lot less than a number of other burls for sale.
👍Nice!
Thank you, Major.
Great result Rick, lucky, lucky, lucky---sorry---skill, skill, skill, in not going through :-) looks great, stay safe, John
LOL! Thanks for watching and commenting, John.
Really beautiful, Rick. The finish is great. I was expecting you to pull out a sand-o-flex for the bumps. Take care.
Bill
Thanks for watching and commenting, Bill.
What an absolutely gorgeous bowl!! And a fabulous video with explosions and jokes and your awesome personality. So much fun to watch. Also how do you sharpen and get a burr on your negative rake scraper? I can never get mine to cut, it just seems to tear at the wood.
Thank you, Art Mom. The scraper I used in the video was a regular scraper. I did try the negative rake scraper that I have, but it wasn’t cutting at all - maybe I need to sharpen it. I don’t use it very often - my experience with it is that it isn’t all that effective. I made a shear scraper tool that I use frequently (here’s a link to that video: ua-cam.com/video/cguioocjwIc/v-deo.html. I also shear scrape with my gouge and with my regular scraper and I find that does a very good job of removing tool marks, without tearing the grain.
Rick I miss the interaction you had with your audience. I'm glad you aren't having us read the CC! Past videos were much more entertaining and informative,
Thanks for the feedback, Shamrock. I was thinking the closed captions might be distracting.
Beautiful burl bowl! How's that for alliteration! Like Phil, I panicked when you thought you went through the bottom. Nice to see you didn't.
Thanks for watching, Tom.
👍
Thank you, Ryan.
It’s a shame that that beautiful artwork had to be sacrificed in the making of the jam chuck. 🙃 Seriously though, this bowl turned out stunning!
Thank you, taytase.
I love you
Thanks, WA.
There is a rumor, not verified, that your wife has used the branding on you. Do you care to comment? No, No thanks for sharing. Your videos are great.
Yes, I now have a designer brand to wear - but it’s on my butt! Thanks for watching, Ken.
