Thanks for reviewing this app! I downloaded the OKO app a couple of weeks ago as I sometimes struggle to see the crossing signal when commuting to and from work on sunny days. It’s awesome! My anxiety for crossing the street has reduced greatly due to this app.
This is awesome. Sometimes I am able to see the crosswalk signal, but there were times when I was still commuting to work, when the sun would be shining righto n the signal and making it impossible for me to see. Other times, I would have to rely on traffic flow, or in busy intersections, wait for someone else to cross so I knew it was time to go.
thanks Sam.. I was visiting my daughter who goes to college in a large town and they had APS at the intersections and it was amazing.. I knew when to cross and it gave me an audible count down to know how long I had to get across the street..
Hi Sam: Thank you very much for reviewing this app. I have heard a lot about it, but I haven't gotten it. For you and anyone else, especially guide dog users, how do you manage the phone and your mobility aid? I know you can hold the phone in your hand and point, but Could you also attach the phone to say a chest harness and maneuver the camera that way? Since I use my right hand to direct my dog, I'm a little nervous about having a phone out while walking. When you do a second video, if it would be possible, I would love some tips on Waze to use the phone hands-free with this app. Thank you for all you do!
Awesome!!! I live in s large city too, some crossings have APS like the neighborhood where I work, but others are hard to see, especially when the sun directly hits the signal! I do ride a bike on city streets and do ok riding in traffic, but walking sometimes the walk signals are hard to see. Thank you! This also means I don’t have to wear my esight version 4 glasses when crossing the street which is even more dangerous
I download the app, but haven’t had a chance to use it yet. This will definitely come into good use for sunny days when seeing the signal is far more difficult for me.
There are a few APS intersections where I live and I like having the additional crossing cue. An app like this would be extremely helpful and I hope OKO or a similar app comes out soon for Android phones.
Hi Sam, HelP! Sam, is there any program out there that will let me talk to my comnputer and have it talk to me. Where it will go where I want to go and then tell me what I'm looking at, how much something is, what it does , etc. If I don't find something, I'm going to go bonkers. I have AMD and have been gradually losing my sight over the past three years. As youy have said, blindness or IV is a spectrum. I can see things at a distance but cannot read anything. Even with the help of a magnifier. And I cannnot get the Narrator to work to read what I want it to. I am very frustrated! I'd appreciate any advice you have to offer. I really appreciate all that you do and you have been a godsend to me during this tiime. Hope you can read this. I can type ak if I get my fingers in the right place. Thanks again. Annie
Just heard about this app on the ACB presentation for convention today. And I’m super excited to try it out. I live in the Twin Cities area Of Minnesota. And I can honestly say, that they are pretty good about putting in accessible signals but, one of the problems is they’ll put in a signal but then it’s far from the actual crosswalk. This happened, and my dog and I did a diagonal crossing because the signal was so far away from the actual intersection itself. And it wasn’t my dog’s fault.
Hey Sam, thank you very much for the video. How do you deal with the traffic flow? Is it just repetition training or just a sense of how the traffic is flowing in you listen I am very curious I am losing my eyesight. I have a cataract and things are becoming more and more cloudy and I just wanted to get a sense of what works best for you or others out there
Hi: I'm sure Sam will respond when he has time or in the next live stream. And I'm hoping that others will also give their input. I only speak for myself: when listening to the traffic flow, I cross with the parallel traffic (traffic that is moving next to me). Perpendicular traffic (traffic that is moving across my body) means that it is not safe to go. A rule of thumb that I follow especially in very unfamiliar intersections is to wait and go at the beginning of a parallel traffic surge. So for example if you approach an intersection and there is already parallel traffic moving, wait until the next cycle when you hear that first car taking off to your side. I hope that kind of helps. I probably shouldn't be typing this with a huge headache, but I'm trying not to stay behind on videos.
Thank you very much for your input. This totally gives me some idea and perspective on this subject and things to think about. I found myself shaking my head in agreement with all that you said, and I appreciate you taking the time to. Respond to my question just totally gives me some idea what to look for if you when I venture out there to an intersection thanks again.
@@bearbullcruising6427 i'm glad you found my comment helpful. If you don't have one, and you are experiencing vision loss, I do recommend that you work with an orientation and mobility instructor to develop the necessary skills to travel safely as a blind person. also, I'm sure there are plenty of great folks on Facebook who can offer you some tips. There are some other great content creators on UA-cam like Derek from life after site loss. I think that's his name. Also, Sam is a fantastic professional with a lot of knowledge, one of the few people in the assistive technology profession that I personally respect and follow.
Sounds like a great app. Although sometimes I can see the walk/don't walk signal there are time when it hard to see (particularly when the sun is behind me when I'm facing the signal). I'm going to download and try the app.
Hello, I wanted to introduce myself. My name is Dusty from Corpus Christi Texas I also have star yards disease I love all your videos. Thank you for sharing this app. this could be very helpful for me and also my kids.
I tried to create an account using my email, but I didn't receive the confirmation email from the app I tried with my other email but also didn't receive that confirmation message and my accounts are still not activated
Seems like an app with a lot of potential. As an O&M specialist working with kids, my initial concern is that it would distract from visual/auditory scanning of traffic while crossing. I'd probably require students to put the phone away once they leave the curb.
Hello, from a blind Canadian. Thank you for teaching mobility. My grade 4 mobility instructor made the best impression in my life. Because of her I was able to learn how to navigate crosswalks and have confidence. Continue teaching visually impaired children how to cross roads. It makes the biggest difference in everybody’s life. Granted I am still afraid of crossing the roads. The anxiety never went away because I still make small errors.
Why can't this app also be available for Android. There are a lot of low vision and blonde users on Android. I'm wondering if you can reach out to the developer and see if this app can also be available for Android for below and blind vision users. Thank you.
I don't see why these app devs keep keeping androids out :( I really wanted the Seeing AI app but nope. I use Google Lookout but idk how it compares. But anyway this is really cool. A lot of the APS buttons in my city are not working.
A body cam version could be good, mostly because jerks turning drivers assume your just playing with your phone instead of paying attention. Also for non Apple users.
What about people they are using Android phone😢😢 we need also to to navigate through different section so how you can help us we need to see Android version on this application😢😢😢
This is great in technology the downfall, however it’s not available in my country as of yet I am in Canada, I just search the App Store and that’s the message I received.
kinda dangerous tho right? like tech is always prone to either inacuracy or deffections. I never use those cross walk sound Qs I find them distracting while trying to pay attention to the traffic.
Unfortunately, people can fail too, But you're right that it has an element of risk. At times, the benefits outway the risks. Personally, I like APS because it gives me a clear target to go toward. I think some will use this app as a primary tool, falling back to their other skills when the app isn't workking, but I think the best way is to use the skills already learned, but using the app as confirmation. Sadly, I suck at walking strait. From what Sam showed, this app's fail mode is silence, and its only a tool in the toolbox. I'd rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it. 😎 YMMV.
Most blind people that cross the street should be taught how to accommodate for not walking straight. Most O&M Specialist should teach this special skill.
This app looks amazing. It’s just unfortunate that it’s not available in Canada for some reason. :(. Super bummed about that as an app would be very useful as a struggle on my daily commute to work to cross the road safely .

Thanks for sharing, 1st I've heard of this. This would be a great feature to add to pre-existing AR HMD's.

I heard this was going to be made available for android as well.
O hope as a android user and Orientation and Moblity specialist it's getting hard... iPhone is just much more accessible
Hey Sam thanks for making this video. i think a lot of people will find it helpful. I’ve used the app a couple times and it really is a game changer.
Oh my gosh. I was just complaining about this to my family recently and I'm definitely going to check out the app that you suggested.
Is this app not available internationally? I cannot find it on my AppStore ;-;
This is great, thank you so much for sharing! Hopefully it will be on Android phones!

WOW! Great information Sam. Thanks so much! Have a great weekend! KEEP ON KEEPING ON!
That is so cool!!! Let me know when we have a good soundscape replacement as well😢
great idea but what if there is no crosswalk or walk signal ?
Fantastic tool, after a long time we do have an application that actually helps. I’m glad you reviewed it.
Keep up the good work, sir.
Thanks Sam. Looks awesome but unfortunetaly for your viewers in Canada, the app isn't availalbe.
Sounds great however, not available in Canada yet ..
I download the app, but haven’t had a chance to use it yet. This will definitely come into good use for sunny days when seeing the signal is far more difficult for me.
Is this just for use in the US? Will it work in the UK?

So do I. I live in Bristol and I get super frustrated when they don't put beeping crossings in place.
Thanks!

Too bad I don’t have any traffic signals in my little city red definitely be downloading that app

Nice,
Would use if they release an Android App.
Love this app!! It works very well, even in bright daylight when the crossing signal can be very hard to see.
Sam,sorry to bug you but I can’t find any contact info for the oko app. Who do I ask,and what is their contact info? Thx and I love your channel!
I’m not 100% sure, however, they may have some contact information on their website. I did include a link to the website in the video description.

Too bad my anxiety keeps me from crossing the street. This sounds cool.
Does not appear to be available in Australia. This would be very useful, especially since frequently traffic signals don’t work
Really cool app, thanks for sharing Sam. Although it’s not going to work for me as the App is not available in Mexico. 😢
@@peterspitz2385 Thank you so much for picking that up! I just subscribed. :)
Cheer´s from Mexico City. I moved back from Vancouver a year ago or so.
Good app will download it on my phone and give it a try

Unfortunately, they don't have any plans to bring it to Android right now.
So it's just for iphone??? 😢😢😢
I'm excited about this app but still scared of idiots turning right on red and mowing me down. 😬
