    Kent, congrats on 50K. Thanks for the giveaway opportunity. My name is Corey F. and I would love to win the bowl because I don't have the money to buy a lathe right now so I want someone who could benefit from the other giveaways to do so. I will have to continue to live thru you for right now on turning beautiful pieces. Thank you so much for your content. You are an inspiration. God bless.

    I like this guy; he's a natural teacher. He explains everything he does and along the way imparts what I call "casual wisdom." The only thing I'd like to learn from some of the other content creators is how they manage to stay alive because it seems pure luck the blank doesn't fly out of the lathe and knock their brains out, the whole thing's so unbalanced.

    To create spalted wood I've taken my cut logs down to the mucky bank of our yard pond. I pla e the wood face down and bury them in leaves Spalding. Oak leaves particularly. After a few months I retrieve them. Nice results. There is such a thing as too much spalting though, and the wood can soften (as your sycamore did). Chuckw

    Great bowl project Kent! I have some spalted maple that I will be turning and will give this bowl design a try. That was very interesting and informative about the spalting and especially good to know that it is not dangerous to breathe. Of course, I always use a respirator anyway but great information. Thanks a bunch! One question: what is the shape of your spindle detail gouge? Do you have a video that describes that?

      Thank you George! My spindle detail is 3/8" All the best to you and Happy Turning!

    I know this is an older video but it would be good to see your body position when doing a push cut across the top of the bowl as from 18 minutes 7 secs. It looks like the action is like a horizontal pushing away but i'm not sure. Cheers

    Hello, Kent. I do not write a lot, but I look forward to each of your videos anxiously. I have learned quite a lot and am most appreciative that your share your experience and skill with us. My wife views them with me and asks me to check if you have a new one up yet. She is an artist in her own right - painting and wood carving, but due to severe arthritis she cannot participate in any of her loved activities. Except for the hands-on experience she lacks, I believe she knows as much as I do about bowl turning. I enjoy your sharpening course, and frequently check it out as a refresher. I have one technical question - Can you shear scrape the interior of a bowl? I have my 5/8 gouge set up in the same fashion as your go-to gouge you frequently use. Thanks again. Stan in Birmingham

    • @TurnAWoodBowl
      @TurnAWoodBowl  2 роки тому

      Thank you kindly, Stanley (and your wife too). Your question - not really. You can shear scrape a bit along the inside rim, but inside deeper you'll probably get a nasty catch. Use a round nose scraper for the inside. All the best to you and Happy Turning!

    Hi Kent, beautiful work as ever, i have been following you since i started turning about a year ago and find your style informative and entertaining, i'm curious as to why you did not use a bandsaw to resize the lid, would have thought that would have been a safer option especially for those of us with a smaller lathe, is there a reason you did it on the Lathe?

    • @TurnAWoodBowl

    Question: On such a large bowl, why not core out another blank rather that scoop out all that wood on such a big piece?
    What are your thoughts on carbide tip tools?

    In regards to the CA glue application on the spalted wood, do you immediately apply the activator? In the video it indicated you did. So don't you want to give the wood tine to absorb the glue?

    • @TurnAWoodBowl
      @TurnAWoodBowl  2 роки тому +1

      Yes, I applied it quickly. Oh the CA was absorbed almost immediately as well. ;)

    Thanks for the beautiful lidded, I am relative new to turning parts of three years, I enjoy the spalted wood also. When using the tried and true original finish, do you just put one coat on the bowl or would it be better to use two coats? I just ordered a pint from Amazon to try it out. is there a better place to get it for less?

    • @TurnAWoodBowl
      @TurnAWoodBowl  2 роки тому

    I'd like to make a batch of that finish you used. What is the ratio of linseed oil and beeswax please?

    • @TurnAWoodBowl
      @TurnAWoodBowl  2 роки тому +1

      In the description. My ratio is about three computer clicks and a couple days waiting for it to arrive. LOL I use Tried and True Original brand. You can make it, but they have it mastered and it's completely organic. Check it out. All the best to you and Happy Turning!

    I knew about the fungus, didn't know about the mineral deposits. Good info!! I've watched scientists purposefully spalt wood with a variety of fungi... some that will leave different colors like orange, red, and even blue. I thought someone was going to try to market the 'stuff' they used. But never seen anything more of it.
    When a birch or maple tree gets felled and I can get some of it. I'll spalt it on purpose. Usually in the fall, I'll get some logs about 24" long and set them upright around the back of the garage. Then Anchor Seal the top of them really good. Then wait until Spring and cut into one to see if they are ready. If they are, cut them up into blanks and anchor seal the ends. Then just get them when I can. Usually, end up twice turning them so they don't get too punky.
