My Honda generator had been sitting idle for a couple years and wouldn’t start so I hit UA-cam university for a fix. Stumbled upon this gem and followed his step by step guide. It worked perfectly! It’s not too hard and I had limited tools as well. I will make a point that be sure you put the washer back on the carburetor secure screw BEFORE you put everything back together …or gasoline WILL leak when you get it started up and you will have to repeat all the steps again… but you will be faster the second time! Thanks for your help!!😂
Went to start my Honda 2000 today after it had been sitting for a couple of years..and yes it wouldn't start. Watched your video and followed step by step and she's now purring like a kitten!
Hello Jon. I wanted to take the time to thank you for making this DIY video. I followed your steps to the “T”. Put it all back together again, pulled it twice and it started right up. It’s running like it’s new. What makes your video so great is your attention to detail. Everything from the exact tools you need, to the bread wire, to the east step by step instructions. Well done. 👍. I live in Puerto Rico and this generator brought me through Hurricane Maria. I ran over three months straight. Being in the middle of hurricane season now and not being able to start your generator is not a good feeling. You my friend helped so much. Thanks again for taking the time to make this video and educating us DIY guys. I hope I can return the favor some how. For now, I will pay it forward to folks on the island that need help.
These are the kind of comments that keep me going. I am thrilled your generator is back in action and thanks so much for the kind comment. Keep on tractoring!
Thanks for posting this video. I used it on 2 Honda generators that hadn’t been started in a year or two and wouldn’t start. Both fired up after completing the steps in your video.🎉
I like to give credit where credit is due! Looked at a few sites to help with our Honda 2000 generator.....nothing changed. Found Jon's site.....easy fix is right! Step by step and taking out and cleaning the jets was the key! Thank you so much for your tutorial. Our generator has less than 50 hours on it in 10+ years, so being able to fix this ourselves was a huge savings. Again, thank you for your knowledge and posting so that we all can learn and do it ourselves!
I very much appreciate you taking the time to comment. I’m so happy it worked for you! Great little generator, just needs a good cleaning from time to time. Now make sure you run ethanol free gas. Keep on tractoring!
I just did exactly what your video said and the Honda generator started right up. I actually used tip cleaners as I’m a welder and have them. Thanks so much for your video.
Shear genius!!! Thank-you Jon. I bought both the Honda 2001i inverter and companion generators less than one year ago. Both were extremely difficult to start from the initial purchase (took over 100 pulls on each one before the intial startup). Always difficult to start ever sense (less than 3 hrs usage in the last year). Yesterday the companion generator wouldn't start at all. Viewed your video last night and cleaned out the main jet as described. Only took 20 mins to perform the repair. To my amazement, the companion generator started up on the first pull!!! Thank-you Jon for the great video and saving my marriage.
Very happy to hear this trick worked out for you and you're back in business. Also, not sure how I saved your marriage but glad you're happy about it. 😂😂 Use non ethanol gas and you shouldn't have any issues for a long while. Keep on tractoring!
I have the same generator and after 2 years of not using it, there was no way it would start. I did everything you said and it started right up. Thanks much!
Worked perfectly! Even as you told me to replace the cover because I shouldn’t worry and that it was going to work, I was worried. Third pole, fired right up. Ran old gas out and replaced with new, fires every pull now.
rarely make comments on these kinda forums but had to give a shout out!!! generator been sitting for about 6 months and for weeks I couldn't get it started. Video was a life saver, can't thank you enough!! just follow along, directions are on point, very easy for DIY, started with 2nd pull after cleaning jet. Surprisingly, jet didn't look clogged or dirty at all but working well now. thanks again, much appreciative of the video.
This video was a lifesaver! I had just done the normal service and my generator (spark plug & oil change) and still wouldn’t start. Cleaning the jets did it. Thank you for the step by step instructions!
I saw the same bread tie trick on Taryl Fixes All You Tube channel. He has been working on small engines for 40 years, and he is very knowledgeable on just about anything related to small engine repair. Great video, thanks for sharing.
Thank you 100x! 2 days before my camping trip I decided to try and run my generator and it wouldn’t start. I’ve cleaned a few carburetors before but this made it so much easier and gave me more confidence. Best of all it was the solution to my problem.
Just an FYI: The float bowl has a drain valve & hose that is used for long-term storage. It's actuated by a slot head screw underneath the silver tube in front of the float bowl removal bolt. FURTHER: VP has a product called Fix-It Fuel that is supposed to dissolve varnish build-up. First drain old fuel from tank, then pinch off the fuel line before draining the float bowl using the float bowl drain screw and tube, install Fix-It Fuel, pull the engine through a few times to get the VP product into the system and let it sit for the recommended time to do its job. Also, for those of us who have difficulty in locating ethanol-free gasoline - ethanol being a big problem for small engines - VP also has ethanol-free 4-stroke fuel that is recommended for these small engines. Day later update: After draining the old ethanol fuel, replacing it with VP Fix-it Fuel, and dropping the float bowl to clean very little schmutz in its bottom, all I could get was a 1/2 second run before it shut off. Let it sit and tried several times, same thing - run for 1/2 a second, then it stopped. Saw another video that showed how to remove the 2 front plates to access the in-line fuel filter, but before I did that, I came across this video that suggested dropping the float bowl and removing the jet assy (2 pcs) and running a bread tie through the holes. I could see daylight through all the the holes, but I still used a gas welding tip cleaner (that has rough portions to further remove build-up). Blew everything out, then re-assembled and VIOLA -- it runs again ! ! ! VP suggests running the generator for 5 minutes to circulate the product, let it sit for several hours, then use as normal. Lesson learned : NO MORE ETHANOL FUEL. Oh, and Honda suggests draining the float bowl when storing the generator long-term (via the float bowl drain & tube). Thanks for this video, my friend!
Thank you a million times for posting this video. My generator has been in the shed since we drove to Alaska and when we really needed it this winter it never would start. Took it apart and did what you recommended and it started up lickety-split!
I have been working on my friends generator that would not run without spraying starting fluid. I did exactly what you said. The little screw inside card was clogged. I put it back together. I cranked the first pull. Thank u.
Thanks Jon, I have the same generator and it wouldn't start. I went to the produce section of my local store got a few twist ties and it worked perfectly. As others mentioned the jet wasn't coming out real easy, but I would push it from the top (inside the carb) back and forth a few times and it popped out...I was stoked, you made my day
I have a EM2200X generator and after changing plug, gas and cleaning out carb fuel reservoir, applying this fix worked like a charm. Thanks for the video. Spot on!
Yup! 20 - 30 pulls and no starting after winter storage although I had added fuel conditioner to the gas before storage. Actually, this is after a winter's storage from replacing the carb because of the issue with an after market carb. And the new carb jet gummed up! This 'fix' worked great and the problem now is how to prevent future gumming issues. Empty the tank and run the carb dry? Drain the float bowl and hopefully the jet at the same time without taking the carb off? Anyway, once performed, the fix disassembly is not a long procedure. Thanks!
Thank you for the great video. I too lost my dad and was given this exact generator. It sat for at least 2 years and recently the power went out and I wasn't able to start it. I changed the spark plug, but it seems this is the next step since it has been sitting for a few years. Thanks again.
Great video. I found the one jet was stuck at the top, used a small screw driver to pop it out then followed the rest of the video and worked like a charm. Thank you sir
Thank you for this video! I couldn't get our Honda EU2000 going at our remote cabin in Alaska (24 miles from nearest road). No Internet out there so I brought it home. Watched this video and soon the generator was running like it was new! One thing I did ... I fastened the bread bag twist wire to a tube in the generator. That way I will have one handy the next time I need one! Thanks again!
Thanks men!! Jus like u did i did and it start at the 3rd attempt after almost an hour of fail attempts to turn it on! Great job men! You saved me at least $30 there❤
Thank you!!! Forgot to drain my carb bowl and didnt start the gen for 2-3 months so had to do this before starting - and had forgotten to turn the ECO mode OFF. Thanks for a great video!
This video is perfect. I took mine apart and used carb cleaner and put it back together and it started right up. Definitely plan to use the expensive non ethanol gas in the future.
@@ritterjon - Actually, I couldn't get it out. So, I cleaned the screw that did come out, then I ran that little wire into the center of the jet that wouldn't come out - and - somehow - it worked
Hey This was exactly right. I did this and it fixed my issue completely. I used tag wire ( cleaned off wire from a bread tie) to clean the tiny holes, then I blew them out with air. Put it all back together and whamo fired right up after I filled the bowl. Now it starts up first pull. Thanks for this video.
Kudos Jon! I have an EU2000i that I have had for years. It has minimal running hours on it and has been sitting unused for so long I don't remember when. It would start but not run. So I followed your instruction here on the tube religiously and to the letter. The bread tie trick to open the jet orifices worked so slick I had to laugh. Oil change, new plug, fresh 91 non ethanol after I followed your directions she fired off on the third pull. Purrs like a kitten, runs like new. I highly recommend this tutorial to anybody having start/run problems with their Honda.
Thanks for the nice comment. I’m very happy this video helped you out. 91 octane will help that from happening again in the future. Keep on tractoring!
Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I just followed your process and my unit started on the third pull. The jet was 100% full of debris. Excellent video‼️
It worked. Like yours, it was my dad’s and had not run in awhile. Same generator too. I watched this video when it came out and had know idea it would be what I would need to do months later. Thanks.
LOL, bread tie? All my bread comes with a plastic tab. I did find that cat 6 Ethernet wire works perfectly. You have to make sure to get a clean cut on the end as it’s practically the same diameter as the holes in the jet. Thanks for sharing!
Had recent power outage and needed generator (Have the same one you own). Spent quite a while getting it running. When power came back on was glad to find your video. Well explained. Thank you, Jon.
Awesome video! Don't forget about the little black plastic idle jet on top of the carb. The holes in that are even smaller. Usually surges while running. Especially when on ECO mode. Its plastic and cheap almost easier to just change out. I had to use a wire from a wire brush and it barely fit. :) Ran smooth as glass after no surging.
How's she goin'? Nice fix on the genny!!! Old fuel left in the carb bowl is probably the number 1 reason a small engine won't start or run well. You got this one done!!! Take care!!!
This got me closer! I still have to choke the engine slightly while using or it shuts off. I’m sure it’s a carb issue but the generator is at least 8 years old and had gas in it for quite awhile. I may just replace the carburetor.
Thanks so much for your video. I also stored the same model you show here 4 years ago thinking I was safe by draining the regular car gas out, but when I needed it today it didn't start after 30 minutes of exercise pulling on the rope. Thankfully your video popped up first and after watching it twice I gave it a try and it started on the second pull this time! Filled it up with the gas you can find at Home Depot for small engines and hope that when I need it next time it will work. Also going to try to remember starting every couple months to be sure, but we'll see if I remember, I think I remember saying that 4 years ago too. :)
Well that’s one way to get a workout. I did the same thing before making this video. Not so great on the shoulders. Happy to hear about your success story! Set a repeat reminder on your phone to start it every few months. Keep on tractoring!
Funny thing, Jon. I was "youtubing" generator videos this morning (looking for a new one for my RV) and your new video popped up in my recommendations. I had one of those Hondas and loved it! Just too small for my needs. I only have one supplier for non-ethanol gas here. It's an airport located about 45 mins away. They sell non-ethanol aviation fuel for about $2.00 more per gallon than "gas station" fuel. I like the ones that run on propane for traveling. At the end, I thought that Explorer was a police cruiser in your driveway :)
That’s interesting, in MN just about every gas station has premium non ethanol gas. Of course just about everyone here has a boat, snowmobile or ATV. It’s only about .20 more a gallon too. Your not the only one who think our explorer is a police cruiser. When I get behind someone they always slow down. It can be annoying at times. 😂 Keep on tractoring!
Hi Jon! Thanks for sharing a great tip! I have a similar quiet inverter generator that still runs good, but if it doesn’t start one day, I’ll know what to do. Keep on tractorizing!
Love our honda 2200, it runs our off grid camper/toyhauler, no problem its really nice to have air conditioning running while off grid. We added the "extended run kit" so only have to put gas in it once a day and forget about it!
Hi Jon - Really appreciate the way you took us through this procedure - I'm having one problem - no matter how much I'm tapping; I can't get the jet out - the screw came out immediately - HELP! and thank you
If you open the choke and look down the throat of the carb you will see the top of the jet sticking out about a 1/16 of an inch. Take your small screwdriver and GENTLY press it down towards the bowl. That should free it up.... Make sure when you clean the jet, you take a little time to clean out the passage the jet goes into on the carb. The Key to preventing this is to shut off the gas, and use the drain to empty out the bowl... Especially when the generator is going to be stored. Add some fuel stabilizer to the tank every time you fill it to help keep things running smooth
Awesome video, work a treat. The fuel bowl had so much gunk in it and jet were mostly blocked. And best part was hearing it start. Yay. Thanks for the video
Nice to have this video, appreciate that. My EU2200i won't start out of the box. If I am expected to remove and take apart the carburetor to get it to start, I'll just have to look for another option.
Thanks.just pulled my honda 2000 out of 3 month storage during a power outage only to find a no start situation. Looks like i found the right vid, I'll let you know if it works.
Thanks for posting his video. Great information and helpful tips. I was able to get my generator up and running in a snap. I did have to use the screw driver to help push the injector out of the carburetor as it was stuck and would not just come out with light tapping.
Thanks for the great video! A few comments: 1.) I don't think it's necessary to push away the fuel line clamp which is connected to the carburetor. Since we don't have to unhook that line from the carburetor anyway, no need. 2.) I used a spring-loaded clamp with soft jaws instead of vice grips for isolating the fuel tank, and it worked great. 3.) I had trouble getting the second, longer "jet" piece out of the carb, but I noticed that the longer one sticks up a little bit into the main chamber, so I just got a tiny screwdriver and carefully pushed it down and the second piece came right out. 4.) I cleaned all my parts using acetone in an ultrasonicator, which worked. May have been overkill. The twist-tie method probably works fine, but I wanted it to bathe internally for a while. I used acetone and heavy duty degreaser for cleaning the tub and the carburetor tip, which worked great. 5.) We can't really see the orientation of that same second "jet" piece very well in the video, so I had to pause and repause it a bunch of times to make a best guess. It's ironic since you're saying it's critical to know the orientation and you had to study it a lot while you aren't showing us well. :) For those still unclear, the end with only one collar goes in first, not the end with two collars. Overall, fantastic video, this repair worked great for me. Appreciate it!
I have watched two of these videos on the Honda carb and both did not mention the little rubber red gasket on the bottom of the bowl fastener? I almost didn't see it fall on the floor of the garage and put it back in. other wise very good video
Nice vid but I have a question: Why did you not drain the bowl using the screw that opens the bowl to empty via hose. Also how did you take out the carburetor w/o disconnecting the cables on top. thanks.
Here in Jersey, I've never seen non-ethanol gas for sale near me. There are 9 stations located in the southern part of the state. Not worth the trip or the price. Never had a problem with any of my gas powered equipment. Sears Lawn Tractor, Echo weed whacker and blower backpack, Stihl chainsaw. I've had them for years. Here is the trick, beside regular maintenance, I use a product in the Regular gas that I use in them called Sea Foam. A can cost about 11 dollars. At the end of the season I pour a few ounce's into the tank and let it run for a few minutes. Never ever had a problem.
Pardon a question. ALthough your process and instructions are excellent, when we opened the air filter compartment, the filter was soaked with oil. Generator not used for about 4 months, last time it started fine. Do you know the reason for air filter getting full of oil? Please and thank you
I hope this works for you. It’s always good to start them about once a month to keep those jets from clogging up. Otherwise make sure you’re using non ethanol fuel. Keep on tractoring!
I have the same generator and sometimes not giving me any power, it always started and running, but no powers that is my problem, any recommendations or can you make another video with regards to my problem. Thank you
I found pulling one of the bristles from an older SS wire brush worked really well for poking through the jet holes. Would be a good idea to order an O ring kit just in case as well. the EU2000i and EU1000i both use the same O rings.
Thanks for the video! I can't for the life of me get the jet out. The top screw fell out. I opened the choke and was able to push it down, but it's stuck. Any advice?
If you have a pick or even a finish mail you might be able to put it down into the jet and wiggle it free to pull it out. Also try spraying some carb cleaner to free it up. Best of luck, that can be a pain sometimes. Keep on tractoring!
Sorry for the late reply, I would imagine you've solved this issue by now. If now I would try to get it out with a small pick or maybe even a nail that might fit. As far as the butterfly goes I'm not too sure what you could do. Keep on tractoring!
I just took the injector port out and sprayed it with WD40 and let it work it’s way through blew it out likes flute and started up right away. Air hose would have worked too. Real easy maintenance fix.
Before all this major surgery, try this: Pull the cord five times, with choke full on. If it doesn't start, leave the choke full on and wait 5 minutes and try five pulls again. If it doesn't start, leave the choke full on and wait 10 minutes and try five pulls again. This has never failed to work for me, even when my generators have been sitting for months. I will confess, however, that my gens have never seen a drop of Ethanol gas (only alcohol-free)--and that may be part of my success!
Ethanol free gas is the only way to go with these high efficiency generators. This one sat for a few years after my dad passed away. He would use whatever was the cheapest but he would run it enough so it never had a chance to gum up so it didn’t matter. Thanks for watching. Keep on tractoring!
Great video Jon !! I really enjoy fix it videos like this. Someone is going to fire up there generator and look this up right before they go camping. Your going to save the day ; )
You missed pulling the pilot/idle jet out. It’s the plastic one on the outside held in by the idle set screw. If your engine is surging or has a rough idle that is what will be plugged or restricted.
My Honda generator had been sitting idle for a couple years and wouldn’t start so I hit UA-cam university for a fix. Stumbled upon this gem and followed his step by step guide. It worked perfectly! Thanks men!! Jus like u did i did and it start at the 3rd attempt after almost an hour of fail attempts to turn it on! Great job men! You saved me at least $30 there❤
So glad to hear this fix worked for you! I appreciate the comment.
Keep on tractoring!
Hey Jon - I put it back together and - lo and behold - it started after a few pulls - Thanks again
Wonderful news!!! I was just thinking about a way to get that jet out. How did you get it out?
@@ritterjon - Actually, I couldn't get it out. So, I cleaned the screw that did come out, then I ran that little wire into the center of the jet that wouldn't come out - and - somehow - it worked
Dude!!!! Thanks for the great how to, worked Great, my fuel tank is rusted bad so I ran fuel from a plastic tank. Stoked about ur tractor content too!
I’m so glad to hear this worked for you! I appreciate the comment.
Keep on tractoring!
I’m thrilled this worked for you! I appreciate the comment.
Keep on tractoring!
bye the way 24awg wire works
tnx OM well done. made me look smart
It worked. Like yours, it was my dad’s and had not run in awhile. Same generator too. I watched this video when it came out and had know idea it would be what I would need to do months later. Thanks.
I am very glad this video was able to help you out!
Keep on tractoring!
LOL, bread tie? All my bread comes with a plastic tab. I did find that cat 6 Ethernet wire works perfectly. You have to make sure to get a clean cut on the end as it’s practically the same diameter as the holes in the jet. Thanks for sharing!
Nice instructions on carb cleaning. Non-Ethanol gas very important! Ethanol attracts water, causes corrosion, gums up!
Had recent power outage and needed generator (Have the same one you own). Spent quite a while getting it running. When power came back on was glad to find your video. Well explained. Thank you, Jon.
Very happy to hear this and glad you found the video helpful!
Keep on tractoring!
10 min fix and I'm back up and running. Thanks chief!!!
Happy to hear it worked out for you! 👍
Keep on tractoring!
Great video! Had the same issue. The tool I used that you shown was a tip cleaner for cutting torch tips.
Good to know! Thank you!
Keep on tractoring
That little blak idle jet looks hard to get to
How's she goin'? Nice fix on the genny!!! Old fuel left in the carb bowl is probably the number 1 reason a small engine won't start or run well. You got this one done!!! Take care!!!
Awesome thank you so much it worked you are a lifesaver literally❤❤❤❤❤
Good Stuff!!!
You just saved me more than I could afford!!!
Awesome I instructions and very easy to follow and perform! Spot-On and Thank you, you saved me ~$400 bucks!!!
Thank you so much for this
I have one also been in storage for couple of years...will follow your instructions....to a tee...here's hoping🤗
Keep on tractoring!
Hi Jon! Thanks for sharing a great tip! I have a similar quiet inverter generator that still runs good, but if it doesn’t start one day, I’ll know what to do. Keep on tractorizing!
Nice! Took me longer to get the tools out than it did to do this service and oil change. Thanks!
Great video, thank you for the attention to detail and the great commentary! Very nice job, I appreciate it.
I really appreciate the comment! Thanks for checking out the video. 😁👍
Keep on tractoring!
Thanks.just pulled my honda 2000 out of 3 month storage during a power outage only to find a no start situation. Looks like i found the right vid, I'll let you know if it works.
I sure it works for you! Keep me posted.
Keep on tractoring!
Thank you! This is just what I needed to get mine running again! I used a small safety pin; it's all plastic bread ties around here.
Thanks for posting his video. Great information and helpful tips. I was able to get my generator up and running in a snap. I did have to use the screw driver to help push the injector out of the carburetor as it was stuck and would not just come out with light tapping.
This is great! Thanks for the comment. I’m happy to hear this worked for you.
Keep on tractoring!
So did I. I change oil, spark, this procedure and even clean the muffler. Still no response from the generator.
This video fixed my generator thank u
Thanks for the great video! A few comments:
1.) I don't think it's necessary to push away the fuel line clamp which is connected to the carburetor.
Thank you. Is there a solvent you can use to clean it out without disassembly?
I’m not sure, 🤔
Thanks for the video, it sorted my problem out it’s a great feeling and relief to put the problem right, I live off grid in the uk.
I have watched two of these videos on the Honda carb and both did not mention the little rubber red gasket on the bottom of the bowl fastener? I almost didn't see it fall on the floor of the garage and put it back in. other wise very good video
Thanks..This was very helpful 👌 👏 👍
Nice vid but I have a question: Why did you not drain the bowl using the screw that opens the bowl to empty via hose. Also how did you take out the carburetor w/o disconnecting the cables on top. thanks.
Those are good questions that in all honesty I don’t remember the answers to.
*Keep on tractoring!*
Please and thank you
I’d love to be able to answer this question but the fact is I just don’t know. 🤷♂️
Keep on tractoring!
torch tip cleaner is what your thinking of by you a set theyre handy for multiple things
Thank you so much for posting!! I followed along and my generator now works!
Torch tip cleaners work well also. love your video, good job with the details.
Mine has been hard to start since day one of owning it for 3 months. Will try this. I'm hating on Honda right now because of this.
Thank you
Good morning, Jon. Nicely done. You will find a use for that generator especially in the winter when the power goes out. Be well.
I would love to have a little shed type cabin out at Yukon. That generator could come in handy for that.
Keep on tractoring!
Thanks that really help me alot i was already scared that my generator was damaged but i did that and work perfectly
Fantastic! Glad it worked out for you!
Keep on tractoring!
Bread tie. Check!
Thank you for your tip. Smarter than getting a Torch tip needle cleaning kit.
Brilliant thank you
July 2022, just did this and it fixed the problem, mine wasn’t starting. Thanks
Same problem. But I will try to fix ot tomorrow. Thanks for the video
Would this procedure also fix a unit that is "surging" ?
I think it probably would.
I found pulling one of the bristles from an older SS wire brush worked really well for poking through the jet holes. Would be a good idea to order an O ring kit just in case as well. the EU2000i and EU1000i both use the same O rings.
That’s a great idea!

Thanks for the reply!
When I unscrewed the jet the longer yet didn’t come out. Any suggestions on how to get it out? The butterfly is also stuck open.
Glad you got it going! Thanks for the comment!
Keep on tractoring!
Ah this looks doable! Thanks! Hope this works!
Yeah it worked but I struggled till I realized I left out the float spring which I didn’t see fall out. Then I got it working perfect!
Jon great enjoyed this we use touch tip cleaners
God Bless All
PaK
Do you know where I can get a oil dipstick and other parts for ap2000i generator because I can't find them anywhere
Sorry, I don't know of any specific places.
Thanks so much. Great DIY video. 👍
Great video Jon !! I really enjoy fix it videos like this. Someone is going to fire up there generator and look this up right before they go camping. Your going to save the day ; )
Quite helpful 👍 Thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
Keep on tractoring
You missed pulling the pilot/idle jet out. It’s the plastic one on the outside held in by the idle set screw. If your engine is surging or has a rough idle that is what will be plugged or restricted.
Perfect fix for my generator. Thanks so much!
Generator works 🎉
Nice video, thanks.. but please check that you replaced the clamp on the fuel line. I think you skipped that in your video. :-)
This has been very helpful, thanks Jon.
