  • Exploring Peterborough: A Journey Through History and Heritage
In this video, we explore the rich history of Peterborough, South Australia, a town forever changed by the arrival of the railway in 1881. The railway transformed Peterborough from a fledgling settlement into a bustling hub where steam locomotives brought workers, goods, and a sense of promise. As we walk through the main street, we’ll uncover the stories behind the town's heritage buildings and learn how they shaped the community over time.
We begin with a visit to the **Steamtown Heritage Rail Centre**, where the town’s railway legacy is preserved for all to see. From the first train station to vintage locomotives, the museum showcases the transformation of Peterborough from a railway junction to a quieter, slower-paced town today. You'll also get to see the **Capitol Theatre**, where residents once dressed up to enjoy entertainment before heading back to their hard-working lives in the railyards or paddocks.
Peterborough’s *YMCA building**, which opened in 1927, is home to the Social History Museum today. It’s fascinating to see the rooms restored to their original condition, filled with artifacts that tell the stories of the town’s past. We also take a look at a **miniature of the first train station* and some of the tools used to create it, along with a display of vintage machinery, including an old wool bailer that was used for processing wool.
As I reflect on the town’s history, I’m reminded that life in the past, though difficult, wasn’t necessarily simpler. Despite advances in technology, we still face many of the same struggles. However, traveling through places like Peterborough helps put things into perspective and makes us appreciate what we have today-much like the excitement of flipping a light switch back in the early 1900s.
We also take a trip to **Peterborough’s War Memorial**, which is located at the heart of town. The **old train station**, now a quiet relic of a bygone era, offers a glimpse into the town’s past when it was a thriving railway junction. The 1980s marked the decline of the town's significance as train services dwindled, and by the mid-90s, most passenger trains bypassed Peterborough entirely.
Finally, we visit a **private collection of vintage motorbikes**-a fascinating display of motorcycles from renowned brands like Harley-Davidson, Indian, and Triumph. While I’m not a motorcycle enthusiast, the stories shared by the owner of the collection were just as captivating as the bikes themselves. His passion for hunting down rare finds and the adventures he’s had along the way made for an engaging conversation.
Whether it’s exploring the town’s railway heritage or uncovering hidden treasures, Peterborough offers a unique glimpse into Australia’s past. Join me as we reflect on how this once-thriving railway hub continues to stand as a testament to the hard work, community spirit, and history that shaped its identity.

    Another very good video John
It does sadden me by the slow decline and demise of these once very viable little country towns
I would like to see the bikes for sure 👍👍

Yes it concerns me about the future of country towns. The bike display would definitely have the bike enthusiast drooling when they go inside. Thanks for watching

I remember going to Sydney twice by train. The second time was going on the brand-new flashy Indian Pacific. We got held up at Port Pirie and the reason was from what I remember, they were waiting on the train from Peterborough to arrive. We left an hour and a half late, but I managed to make up the time. We also returned on the Indian Pacific. Our first trip was the old-fashioned change the train trip. And we also travelled to Melbourne on the southern Aurora from memory. On the night we were leaving Melbourne, we had to walk through knee deep water, because it had rained for about four days. So it was over to Adelaide, then a train to Port Pirie, then home. That was an adventure. Thie first trip I was maybe 7 and the second trip on the Indian Pacific I would have just turned 10 because it was after my birthday in 1970.

Wow what a great story. Those were the days. People these days will never get to experience a real train journey. Unfortunately I have yet to get the chance to do the Indian Pacific. But it is on my Todo list including the Ghan railway. Thanks for telling us about your trip and watching the video. 👍

Interesting your comments on the fact that many people think life back in the old days was simpler and easier. I read a lot of books talking about life back then written by the people who experienced it. Life for most people was grindingly hard and uncompromising. I think things today are so much easier. Not many of us could survive back in the 1800s or even the early 1900s.

I do agree but I think people today would survive in the 1800s because they wouldn't have known anything different. But for me personally I'm pretty sure I would have found it hard and I'm glad we live now. It's knowing what we do today that allows us to understand how hard it was then.
