I personally use gioscope entirely different. In a run and gun doc set, it’s nice to see only 2 or 3 colors. You can choose what areas are on or off. But it’s a tool nonetheless. I love both lol.
Thank God you made this video. I made a mistake in buying the Komodo-X production package only to find out that the included SmallHD monitor doesn't have EL Zone. I've been exclusively relying on EL Zone since its hit SmallHD monitors. I've bought a few Atomos monitors once I know EL Zone was added to those monitors too. My only work around is to learn Gio Scope and pray Red/SmallHD add EL Zone one day. I just love EL's color-coded labels. Makes it so easy to read and understand. Thank you again!
The Gioscope is what I would compare on UA-cam to a video discussing why you purchased a RED Komodo, versus a video doing a technical test on dynamic range and resolution with the RED Komodo. There are more efficient tools for nailing exposure on the go or even on a production set, but the Gioscope was made for fine-tuning specific stops of exposure in particular areas of an image. I wouldn’t use the Gioscope in a typical situation, but there are definitely scenarios where it shines for example Imagine you’re shooting a dramatic sunset scene where the sun is low on the horizon, creating a strong backlight. In the foreground, you have a character standing by a lake with the sunlight reflecting off the water. The scene has a wide dynamic range, with very bright areas (the sun and its reflections) and very dark areas (shadows cast by trees and the character).
I’m red green colorblind too, not quite as much as you it seems. But I like both of those scopes. Sometimes I feel like too many color options confuses things. The majority of the green areas on the Gio Scope makes it easy to know when you’re in the ballpark and then I look for the hot spots on the face and dial back accordingly. Whereas there’s a lot of analysis required for scopes like El zone with lots of colors… although you can get as granular as you want with it. But I can see the same stuff really on both scopes in your example from the window, hot spot on the cheek, rim light, etc but at a quick glance for Gio vs ok what do all of these colors mean on El. Again, I like both. Thanks for your videos man! ❤
I find the Gio scope to be a bit of a mess as well. If they used wildly different colours it might be helpful, it would also help to have a scale show up on the screen like the ElZone.
Very interesting video thanks. Regarding the strange white area on the monitor could it have been the 14th stop turned off? At 04:18 in the video 14th looks greyish/white but its turned off at that point, when turned on presumably it would display a yellow/orange colour? I'm a bit red green colour-blind and the EL scope is so much easier to view. I'm used to false colour on Blackmagic BMPCC 6K which is a very useful feature but it would be great if all cameras and monitors had the option for the consistent approach of the EL Zone System.
Your openness about a hue deficiency, similar to that of mine, is extremely appreciated. Do EL Zones work for Rec 2020 PQ (HDR)? My tests on an Atomos with Raw, result in under exposure for that Color Space, works great for Rec 709
I have never used Gio Scope, but it does seem fairly useless. I do use the false colors though, what is the primary difference between false colors and EL Zone? Is it middle gray +/- stops over/under vs IRE estimated value?
Long term Large-Format photographer here. At 5:59, you claim you are "too stupid" to understand the GIO system. HOGWASH. I've ranted here (UA-cam) and other places about the IRE false color system vs. Ed's EL Zone. If you are a broadcast TV cameraman or engineer, working in the Rec. 709 colorspace, False Color makes a lot of sense. You don't care that most of the shadow information is crushed and lost, or that non-caucasian skin tones are off, you mostly care that the whites aren't blown out. Fast forward to UHD displays and the old Rec. 709 is useless hecause it only acommodated 8 zones (6 zones on a CRT.) So you are correct, the EL Zone system will give you the best realization of the image in your head, the original desire of the artists attempting to bring a vision to the screen. TL; DR, you're NOT stupid, old technology sucks.
No way you just dropped 3 videos in less than 24 hours.
This UA-cam algorithm better know how much value you have.
Oh this one is part three of my Lighting series. It’s been in the bag 😆

Bro, I hope things are going well for you. Thanks for the videos always love them.
So I don't think I am color blind but I would say the EL Zone is a lot easier.
what's up with videos this often😂 love the fact I got something nice to watch ❤
This one was in the bag. The RED stuff just got me going for ONE day. The surge is over 😅 back to the regularly scheduled programming

100%

EL Zone seems the way to go, I just upgraded my ninja V (shhh and got another Komodo) so looks like I need to be using this!!

thats right, some of them were turned off becuase i was trying to focus on the 1/2 and +/- 1 zones as on the EL system

Yea, you can remap the EL Zone to Rec709. Thats how i did this video: ua-cam.com/video/bMZTqc1XYcY/v-deo.htmlsi=g6h2Gmte5KmhC6u3
Hey Justin, Really great video! I wonder how can I apply EL zone in my line of video, mainly surf videography? Thanks.
Same way you use any exposure tool. I’d be using it to monitor the highlights and skin tones in that situation
So, the crazy bit is, on their chart I could tell the difference between the colors perfectly, but on the screen it was basically just a green blob.
😂
LETS GO! That's my comment!
🙌🏼 sorry i could not be of more help
Good stuff!
I find the GIO scope easier to use. I only turn one on at the time. Most people maybe use three max, show clipping and underexposed.
I have never used Gio Scope, but it does seem fairly useless. I do use the false colors though, what is the primary difference between false colors and EL Zone? Is it middle gray +/- stops over/under vs IRE estimated value?
EL Zone is pure stops value. I did a full demo of it while on a little gig a while back
how to install el zone system for ninja v? where to buy it?
I dont think its available for atomos yet
@@JustinPhillip it is, I had to upgrade first to os11 then it will appear in your myatomos profile
All they would have to is make the colors customizable. You pick your own colors.
Exactly. But i cant do that on this komodo.
@@JustinPhillip - They could update the firmware. Presto!!!
@@chrisjenkins9978 They = Nikon 😂
Incredible & Thanks :)
LOL...FWIW, I have good eyes and I CANNOT see the difference in these shades/hues...like you.

It seems the Gio Scope shows you what's "Good enough".
