Portland WES Commuter Train

  • The Portland WES Commuter Train is a small 5 station line with a very limited schedule. It runs every 1/2 hour only during rush hour with no weekend service. The trains are diesel so there is no need for overhead power lines. The tracks are also used for freight train service at night so the stations have two sets of tracks only a few inches from each other.

    I love everything about Portland transit. So convenient, modern and environmentally friendly. The Trimet stations all have great balance of functionality and decor. The single car train kinda reminds me the train running in the countryside in Japan.

      I really love Portland as well! They have such a great mentality about urbanism and environmentalism! I have to admit that it surprised me when I saw the single car running, especially backwards! At the end of the line, there are older railcars from Trinity Railway Express (from Dallas, TX). I wonder if they will add capacity with these cars soon.

      Luke Starkenburg True. Those train cars in the yard probably are added to the current train during rush hours.

      I like all the transit options also. Its a shame so much of America has little transit, but Portland excels in many cases with transit, or walkable areas. What I don't like are the ridiculous amont,of people not paying their fares. That and the odd amount of beggars riding free, begging for change. Actually I'm fed up and aware what some have not paid, while I have. I turn them in to Trimet. I'm referring to the ones that are not begging for money.

      I honestly don’t understand all the hate towards TriMet. I don’t have a car and I LOVE how I can pretty much still go wherever I want, whenever I want. Get a Hop pass card and keep it loaded and you never have to pay out of pocket either!

    For quite a while, I've always loved the Pacific Northwest. Everything about this region, environmentally, culturally, and in terms of transportation, is absolutely amazing. I really hope to travel to this paradise, this heaven, of a region in the Northwestern part of the United States someday. The mountains, the forests, the coastlines, the Pacific Ocean, the people, the culture. Everything up there is so beautiful. Greetings from Texas!

      I love the Pacific Northwest also! The only thing that bothers me is the amount of young homeless people in their 20's in the big cities.

    3:45 no… it’s so that at THAT SPOT, freight trains use the tracks that are FURTHER away from the platform and the WES train can just come over on the other track that’s right up next to the platform so that passengers can hop on/off. ALL cars must be the SAME width

    Used to work in Tigard and often transferred busses at stations that were also WES stops. Ever since isolation started I've been getting more into mass transit types, so it's unfortunate I never went on at least once to see what it was like when I was in the area.

    I am compiling a video of passenger rail in the United States: I have
    not had a chance to film this system and was wondering if I could use 30
    seconds of your footage? I would be more than happy to list your
    channel as credits under the description once I upload the video.

      I actually posted the video and noticed a grammatical error and took it back down. I was fixing and tweaking some things in the video and then decided to research what that parallel track was at the station. It took a few minutes searching but I found a really helpful Wikipedia page on it! I'm much happier with the second, improved video I posted. Thanks!

      1001, 1002, and 2001 are built by Colorado Railcar, with 2001 being an NCPU so it must be towed by another Colorado Railcar. The others are BUDD RDCs.

    will Portland,Oregon ever have more commuter rail lines ??????????

    • @Luke_Starkenburg
      @Luke_Starkenburg  6 років тому +3

      The WES commuter line was supposed to be extended but they stopped planning for an extension because of low ridership.

    • @biz0829
      @biz0829 6 років тому +4

      Honestly that seems kinda counterintuitive to me, like if they extended it (especially to somewhere like Salem which would be quite easy to do as there's already existing track on the same line that goes there) I'm sure the ridership would skyrocket.
