    This is super helpful. Keynote has been my go-to simply because PPT has failed on me or quit abruptly a few times when in the middle of creating a presentation. So playing it safe with Keynote but glad it's a close runner up!

    What a great video! Simple but spot on! I was looking for another app to make great slides ... mostly to impress people with something new but I realized that I had to pay a bunch of money for using prezi or visme. I tried google slides and I don’t use macs so... I completely agree with your point of view. Actually I’ll be checking your videos in order to improve my skill set on PowerPoint. Awww… sorry to hear (and glad, in a way because it simply IS what I use) there‘s nothing better than PowerPoint.
    Recently, for visualization purposes for my weaker students, I tried to do an animation to show what an average is.
    It was supposed to show a bar chart, then draw a line at the value of the average of the 5 bars, then cut off what‘s above the average and distribute it in the gaps below the average line. (Was that description too confusing to illustrate what I tried?).
    PowerPoint failed so horribly in this task (or I did - I dunno!) that I‘m looking for an alternative for simple math visualizations since then. Whenever you try to move an object, there‘s no way to tell where exactly the object will be placed at the end of your animation path. I couldn‘t tell if I had to end the animation arrow at the middle of the object, at the upper or the bottom end. Whatever I tried placed the object in an „off“ position at the end. Is there anybody out there who can recommend a graph tool for making such illustrations with a bit of movement - and without huge efforts?

    Any thoughts on collaboratively working on slide decks? We had two fails this past year. In my group, we used google slides and then the internet turned bad -- once us and every other presenter at the conference was using the internet. So our slide deck wouldn't load properly to present. This has convinced me to make sure I'm using something that can work offline.
    Alternatively, a friend of mine had his team send him ppt slides, but then had problems with the translation when fonts and colors didn't show up attractively. He had to spend hours correcting the deck so it would work. He's convinced that next time, he just needs to present as PDF rather than PPT.

    • @MoreThanPowerpoint
      @MoreThanPowerpoint  4 роки тому

      Yes exactly. I have a requirement that working and presenting my deck can happen offline, no internet required. That's so frustrating I'm sorry that happened to your team and everyone else!
      PPT has new collaborative tools similar to track changes, so that's nice. But I haven't used them and can't speak to that.
      Presenting with PDF means you can't use animations so I only bring a PDF version as a backup in case PPT is broken.
      The messiness of sharing files and working in teams (something I've also encountered and is not fun!) is best fixed through better communication and standards. Make sure everyone is on the same version and create a style sheet so folks use universal fonts.

    I have to say that I hate, loathe and despise the .pptx file format.
    Whenever I've had to use .pptx or .ppt files over the past ~15 years, they have not displayed correctly. For obvious reasons I avoid using them whenever possible, but I had two experiences in 2019 where event organizers claimed they couldn't handle pdf files and demanded pptx. In one case elements got moved around on top of each other, as usual. In the other case the organizers completely reformatted my slides themselves, to convert them to some organizational branding template that I saw for the first time when giving the presentation.
    I use pdf files if at all possible---preferably produced using latex, though that has a very steep learning curve, so I don't recommend folks use it for slides unless they're familiar with it already.
    I saw the earlier remark about the absence of animations in pdf files. I am perfectly happy to sacrifice this in order to get a portable document that will actually work reliably.

    • @MoreThanPowerpoint
      @MoreThanPowerpoint  4 роки тому +3

      Sorry to hear your personal experience has been so negative. This hasn't been my experience at all. What you've described doesn't sound like a ppt problem, it's a problem with the event organizers having outdated or incorrect setup (and would happen with any slide software, not just PPT). I have seen that, and it's why I insist on using my own laptop and bring my own adapters. That has worked for me 99.9% of the time, and I am able use this excellent program and its features to create an excellent presentation.

    It seems Prezi has expanded their suite of tools since you made this video. The real “kiss of death,” IMO, for them is the fact that Prezi Video is stuck in the near-archaic Full HD (1920x1280) video resolution. Today’s inexpensive webcams use UHD (3840x2160) for capture and streaming. If someone can explain how they failed to innovate, I’d be interested to hear. Does PP have any video streaming/recording integration features like Prezi?

    Thank you for these great videos! I teach privately and am moving my course content online. I have been using PPT and creating videos in Camtasia. I saw in another video that you like DaVinci Resolve better, but I already bought Camtasia so I'm sticking with that for now. I don't fit into your target group, but I am finding your videos super helpful. I am thinking about taking your #StellarSlidesin5 course. Since I am not in science/data/research, do you think it would be applicable? I teaching writing. Again, thank you! Your advice is very practical, and I love that you practice (yes, I just finished that video!). I can't stand sitting through rambling, so thank you for sounding so natural by preparing so well! :-)

    • @MoreThanPowerpoint
      @MoreThanPowerpoint  4 роки тому

      THANK YOU for validating the value in practicing! I really appreciate that! In all honestly, Final Cut is really our preferred video editor that costs money. I don't necessarily have anything against Camtasia ... it's just expensive and Resolve is free. If you're happy with Camtasia -- stick with it! #StellarSlidesin5 is free and one goal with it is to help people assess whether they like my training style and think it's a good fit. I say go for it, and if you don't like it then at least you know! It's honestly really hard to have one or two words to describe my audience. I work with academics, so if you're teaching adults then it sounds like a good fit to me! Even if you're an independent consultant/private teacher ... if you use slides to educate adults, you're most likely in my target audience.

    Prezi and also some others have a fundamental problem, they are essentially handling a 3D problem (layered content) and represent it in 2D, so you end up picking and dragging, trying to click the item you intend to modify and waste a lot of time doing so. Not having a layer representation with WYSIWYG drag&drop capabilities like photoshop does is a 💋 of 💀 for me 😂

      @@MoreThanPowerpoint yes, after seeing your video I wast psyched to look at Powerpoint again after doing my last presentation with Prezi. Our company has an Office 365 license so I just tried PowerPoint 16.36 for Mac again and I was pleasantly surprised it solves all these problems with the selection pane (sadly they state on their welcome presentation "The Selection Pane is a subscription-only feature.") and it even has an explosion view via "Arrange > Reorder Objects" which is IMHO a great addition and the first implementation I've seen solving the 2D/3D problem in presentation software. Do you know of other presentation packages solving this problem?

    What I want is to show slides and videos in the order I pre select, and nothing else. I make the videos, 10 or 20 seconds or so in a video editor and I make the slides in photoshop, all to 1280 × 720 pixels. I don't want the viewer to resize them, rotate them, put writing on them, or anything else and I don't want anything else on screen. Microsoft Photos did that till they updated it and ruined my show that I am booked to present. Does anyone know any viewer that just shows the pictures and does nothing else?

    As for prezi: even though I really like the zooming in and out of prezis, I totally hated the tool from the very first prezi I saw. I can‘t even tell why - but I never saw an actually „good“ prezi though I kept looking out for good ones. There was a time when I thought: All the other fools are only stupid and can’t use the tool correctly - but I failed as badly as they did. The zoom effect actually has potential for showing hidden details placed where they belong but - as I said… none of the prezis I saw did that in an attractive meaningful way.

    no surprises there... canva is simply not for presentations, prezi is interesting but nauseating at the same time.

    thanks for this video. I see this is four years old, is Powerpoint still your preferred option? I was watching this clip ua-cam.com/video/DAgKmt4cXCA/v-deo.html and was super impressed with the animations. He uses Keynote. Would Popwerpoint be able to do similar things?

    You CAN make your own ... you just erase what's on the template! (Canva)

    Why am I finding hard to digest the fact that a PhD has time to make a 30-minute video about presentation tools? I normally expect this kind of folks to talk about about more "brainy" topics. Has something changed recently and I didn't get a memo?
