I'm so glad he addressed this; other spiritual teachers often skim over or seem to ignore what Eckhart here is acknowledging as a painful part of our so-called reality
"I can assure u my sense of self isn't derived from any nationality" wow I laughed out loud at the fact that someone thought he would be offended by that statement. Love you Eckhart you changed my life.
There is no problem in the now unless there is one. For most of us the problems are just in our heads. In some cases - like the Holocaust - they were real not imagined. I spoke to a woman once - who was very lively at 85 - about how she survived the Holocaust. She was imprisoned in 5 death camps and she managed to escape all of them. Now that I am meditating I finally understand how she did it. She was in the now. She was present enough to notice and embrace a potential escape route each time. She even did in her eighties when living alone in a house outside a village. One day a psychopath showed up holding a knife ready to kill her. What did she do? Instead of shrieking or running away she just turned around when she noticed him and said "what a beautiful knife, where did you get it?". That put the potential attacker off track immediately and he gave her the knife to look at it.
7:43 Knowing that there is no death to the essence of who you are . . . does not mean that a situation is not dreadful. The one does not deny the other. It has to be recognized in its dreadfulness.
This is a very touchy subject and I feel Tolle answered it very gentle. The truth is that even in the most devastating situations we still have a choice to experience ourselves one with mind or to be a witness to mind. It is of course much harder to be a witness in the face of death or that which leads to death. Only the realization that we are not the body/mind but life itself brings about the end to suffering.
Many Zen masters throughout history have shrugged off individual death as meaningless. In a way death can also help you awake from the nightmare of the egoic mind. Often the ego even leads to a conflict that results in death. Ideally you awake before your body dies though.
Eckhart you started to sound like LIFE itself in my head! This whole time i have missed out on your endlessly refreshing wisdom and now i saw you when i actually opened my heart and mind to stillness. I had lived an entire 27 years trapped in distraction and a little bit of ego, not to mention all the grief which the people around me caused me to feel. i didn't know feeling either bad or good is a matter of decision and that i had a choice. Eckhart, i tell you i have never taken anything way too seriously the way i heard you talking to the point i could finally feel myself within myself outside of my mind. Even though i am from far away, i am hoping to get the chance to meet you someday. I really do love you and thank you for being you.
... and we mostly forget that supposedly a 100 million Nativ Indiens were killed to form today's America. Without that we would not even be the way we are and where we are. It is just part of history and the way we still are. We give ratings of which battle was wors than the other. Herein we are manipulated by the history-book-makers which always are the winners of such a battle.
that was the most enlightened stuttering i have ever heard. I am not joking! I found myself Present each time he catches himself after a stutter. I don't really remember even what he talked about. It's like it doesn't matter. He is so excited to say nothing. Eckhart's stuttering lack of verbal description communicates deeper Presence than anything I have ever heard from a Western speaker.
Thank you Eckhart! I love you for being you and shining a big light out to the world to wake up to love and fullness to appreciation of who we are and can be..love and beauty to the world
What a beautiful and enlightening explanation by Eckhart...everything that he said is true. Obviously at even deeper level of understanding the universe and a soul journey - believe it or not - all these souls chose to experience these atrocities, pain and suffering and the reason behind that was to evolve and find who they truly are, which is all knowing, unconditionally loving Light that is ever expanding and never stops to create. Through these lives they chose to remind themselves that we are small particles of this light and everything else that we think we are is an illusion created by our ego.

What about mothers who lose their children because they are abducted by Joseph Kony as child soldiers? What about humanitarian workers who see people around them with torn limbs, bleeding?
Hello I pray that this message can reach someone who can make a difference. I been try since Many years convince people around the world to try to subtitle to spanish language the videos of Eckart Tolle, I'm a big fan of his teachings but I do not completely master English so while I try to understand I lose a lot of content and I'm sure I'm not the only one, I think Eckart would be even more popular and would help much more people if somehow subtitling Spanish at least one of his videos for month. If you guys are wondering why he always blinks I think I finally know the answer hahahaha. Osho doesnt blink at all and he is a spiritual master. To balance this out, the Universe gave all of Osho's blinks to him hahahhahahaha

Why a nightmare, why so much pain, why does transformation have to be painful, why not blissful? Why pain, is this male collective conciousness, male induced pain and suffering?
If I could ask Mr. Tolle a question it would be about social justice. He States that nothing is absolutely right or wrong only relatively. Is my wanting opression to end right or wrong or is my fighting for social justice merely an identification with thought? If I truly believe that Racism is wrong for example, is a white supremacist as right as I am because we are equally identified with thought?
Laura Kamienski I don’t think Eckhart actually says that. That right and wrong are only relative, I mean. I think he is very clear that racism, or any form of antagonism or perceived superiority towards another person or group, is a form of collective ego. It’s a way of strengthening yourself or your in-group by making another into an enemy. So *of* *course* white supremacy isn’t right. But any individual who subscribes to that philosophy could, potentially, become enlightened and helpful to the world, by renouncing this false identification with this particular form of collective ego.
Laura Kamienski merely a thought. The believer that thought, that which is identified, is not you, it’s the ego self. Ultimately, neither you or them are right or wrong, because all judgement of right or wrong originate in the mind, ultimately, neither are true.
I have a problem in my college study, i can't handle it, can i just surrender in the present moment? I want my problem to be fixed but i can't, can surrendering to present moment solve it for me?
It depends on the problem. Is it really real or just imagined? For example: you suffer from smoking and nicotine addiction and can't focus on learning because of that. That's a real problem. Another example: you are afraid you fail the exam even though you learned for weeks. That's the fear of the ego. You project it onto the future.
1:48 IS it irony? for myself as a white man with black friends today, I very much HOPE there's no irony in that. the actions of previous generations aren't chosen by the subsequent generations.
Ok. But, again... Can one really say "there is no problem?" I'm struggling with that same question and this answer doesn't do it for me. That does not mean we can’t be compassionate but there is no need to make problem.
The problem is never the problem. The problem is our attitude/how we think/our perception of the problem. All just is. At the end of your journey, when you've finally reach enlightenment, you will realize that You can't change anything. And that every happening in this world belongs in this world. When that time comes, no longer will you see the world in good or bad.
councioussnes is cool but it is too much ignorant what really happen in second war my father still alive 95 yrs old fight in Africa he didn't run away and he tell stories too
Did not like this. He's right, but there is something wrong with the way this was presented. Is the evolution that we are experiencing worth the cost of the the evil that has to be endured in the process?
I'm not sure if there's a way to sugar-coat this idea, and I don't think he should have to do that. We don't have to like it but that's just how the universe works, you see it all around nature, horrible things happening for the good of other things. Let's just hope humanity reaches a point one day where the evil/suffering comes to an end.
Without "Evil" there is no "Evolution" because without "Evil" how could you determine what is "Good" ! you can always say "Good" is the absence of "Evil" as "Darkness" is the absence of "Light" but in doing so you are admitting that "Good" and "Darkness" are of equal value which they are not ! In a Materialistic World You need to have both in order to have a conscience , empirical knowledge leads to Truth and Truth is light !
Workdove The question is do we have a choice? Even if you think it’s not “worth it”, you can’t direct evolution. You can’t stop it from happening, either. Evolving into conscious beings is the only way to prevent the infliction of suffering on ourselves and others.
So humanity is going through a 'nightmarish' stage where there is great suffering. Given the suffering humans inflict on each other and other creatures, is it ethically justifiable? God/ the universe will do what it wants, but as a human being trying to be ethical, it seems the only conclusion I can come to is that humans are a failure and should be discontinued. Actually, they should have been discontinued thousands of years ago, and would have been if God/the universe had an 'ethical compass' that I can recognize or relate to. In non-duality, everything is perfect just as it is, but that is a perfection that 'passeth all understanding'. Even if a majority of people 'wake up' and transform this world into a paradise, it will be a paradise built on the bodies of countless beings. There is still no rational answer to the question 'Why does God allow evil', and perhaps there never will be on the level of duality. Transcending duality may bring peace, but it feels like a cop-out to me. Entering non-duality seems like being the billionaire on their island where life is good and no homeless, starving people are visible. I plan to serve out my sentence here on the (significant) chance I've misunderstood the situation, but if NDE reports of death experiences turn out to be accurate, and upon my death I meet God, if I have a separate will left I will choose oblivion over being part of a God that was OK with creating so much suffering. If consent doesn't matter and there is no getting off the ride and away from such a mentally ill 'God' that 'created the world and saw that it was good', then that is truly Hell. I can be present, accept that that reality is what exists and be at peace, but I will always be looking for an opportunity to bring the whole thing down.
Why was it a let down? He basically said the evolution of human consciousness is very slow...it goes through a nightmarish state and this intense experience can be or is the source of awakening out of narrow egoic identification
Consciousness dose not evolve, the distorted egoic structures which corrupt consciousness evolve.Pure uncorrupted consciousness has nothing to do and nothing to say about life, it's indifferent. It's only when we distort consciousness that we get ideas and problems (life). Stop distorting it and the problems fade, along with the rest of life. The thing with spirituality is it is unconcerned with solving problems or living. Awakening is about slowing or almost stopping our distortion of consciousness. When it stops completely that is death. Enlightened masters are like the walking dead in this way.
To make a comment on others suffering, is just that a comment. I can make a comment or, in other words give my opinion. A true, human response is to be both humbled to the point of having no words for such sorrow. However this man claims to be enlightened and therefore beyond mere humanity.
Jullios Evola fight in second war he wrote many books but is not allow to read anymore I have some books from Evola I agree wars are stupid but when happen people must choose one side why nobody can read Evola any more because he choose he agree Mussolini?
seguiriya1 How on earth do you know the lady doesn't like discussing the reality of t h e terror in the Middle East? In what way is it h e r terror? Only because she is Jewish? I believe this is something Eckhart calls 'judgement' and does his best in trying to move people beyond it.
ET talks about the 'madness' of humans killing each other and mentions the mind-boggling numbers involved. And yet he eats meats. He is part of the 'madness' of sentient beings killing each other purely for food that they do not need - the mind-boggling numbers he cites pale into insignificance against those involved in the meat and dairy industry. If human beings are all part of the One, as he recognises, that must mean that ALL beings are. By eating meat, ET denies this. And this will always be an obstacle that prevents him from going all the way. What a shame.
Brian Taylor what then should he eat? Plants? Plants are beings too. So you cant escape that. Its how life works. But you can minimize that by not taking more than you need.
Manuel Meister All living beings have a problem with dying...it is programmed into them by nature. No living being wants to die and all will try and survive if under harm.
Maybe it's Life's way of telling us that IT is beyond all -isms including veganism. As the shift in consciousness has happened to Eckhart, it is irrelevant whether he should or shouldn't eat meat. It is his choice if he prefers it. Of course, I wish that he too stops eating meat soon. But I am not in a state of resistance to the reality that he eats meat. Whatever is, IS! Osho once said: "To me the problem is that of aesthetics. Because Jesus continued to eat meat, I have a feeling that he did not have a great aesthetic sense. Not that he is not religious - he is perfectly religious, as religious as Buddha, but something is missing in him. Ramakrishna continued to eat fish; just nonaesthetic, it looks a little ugly. Enlightenment is not at stake, but your poetry is at stake, your sense of beauty is at stake. Your humanity is at stake, not your super-humanity." (So Eckhart 'going all the way' is not at stake.) 'Just to think that you are killing an animal to eat, just the very idea, is unaesthetic. I am not against it because the animal is killed… because that which is essential in the animal will live, it cannot be killed, and that which is nonessential, whether you kill it or not, is going to die. So that is irrelevant, that is not a point for me to consider."(Re-read this paragraph to be free from the feeling of shame) To his disciples he said: "That meat which you are eating belonged to an animal body. It had a specific purpose there. A specific type of consciousness existed in the animal’s body. You are on a higher plane than the animal’s consciousness, and when you eat the animal’s meat your body goes to the lowest plane, to the lower plane of the animal. Then there exists a gap between your consciousness and your body, and a tension arises and anxiety arises." So it is better for us, for whom the permanent shift in consciousness had not yet happened, not to eat meat. I also personally prefer not to eat meat. Finally, I love Eckhart from the depths of my Being and whatever he does/doesn't do cannot change that!
What a disrespectful way to ask a question. My parents were Holocaust survivors and you're German. So I am going to project the Nazi's behavior onto you. Isnt it so strange and ironic I am influenced by you despite your parent's nationality?
No it wasn't. Do you suggest that victims of the Holocaust shouldn't talk to Germans about it? Also Tolle apparently didn't feel disrespected. Why do you? Are you German? Do not identify with your nationality. It's not you.
Eckhart is not in the least offended. He actually thanked her for expressing herself and used it as an opportunity to tell her that he is not identified with any nationality. It is the ego in us, waiting even for the least situation for getting inflated, that feels offended by the lady expressing her thoughts.
I'm so glad he addressed this; other spiritual teachers often skim over or seem to ignore what Eckhart here is acknowledging as a painful part of our so-called reality

sorry you were late again! LoL.
best comment ever hahaha- forever learning
As long as you notice your ego it loses its power. That's the awareness behind it.
Well, he's top of my list! (As of 8 Sept 2018.)

This man never fails to amaze me!... if you can even call him merely a "man".
Yes. Only the mind creates problems with it's judgments, beliefs, statements, etc.
Awe bless this lady.
Great video! I really learned new things especially about the collective human consciousness.
What an amazing video. Maybe the best Tolle q&a that i have seen.
Great question! I had wondered that myself when fairly recently I heard Eckhart say "there is no problem".
wow, first video in a long time where i had no resistance, and could just observe it all
One of the best 13 minutes I've ever used... #eckharttolle #stillness #consciousness #presence
Great as always!
such a brilliant response!!!

Very well explained.

Wow
Powerful. How incredible to hear this beautiful Jewish woman and this beautiful German man communicate at such consciousness. 🙏🏼🙂
Love Tolle!
This must be the longest question in the world. An observation not a judgment.
In times of blinding pain and fear, one often loses their sense of personhood
Why? Because the contrast is so intense their true Self often intensifies at the same time
For one to know incredible fear one must know incredible peace
Through Grace, the BodyMind dissolves into itself which is the enteral peace that is it's true essence
For our true essence can not be touched or perceived thus, is always unaffected by matters of Mind
All experiences, are matters of the Mind because all experiences are "known", only Mind knows, the pure Self is just being what it is...the un-perceivable backdrop of Mind
But as he said, it doesn't negate that a terrible experience was witnessed
Peace my fellow expressions of consciousness

Eckhart Tolle I must inform you that, right now, every second, 40,000 nonhuman animals are murdered by human beings for trivial purposes.
Thank you !
Eckhart Tolle ! quick question: what do you feel when you win ? for example you win in a 1v1 chess match ? is it completely irrelevant?

silly questions don't seem to bother him in the least, fascinating
Ok. But, again... Can one really say "there is no problem?"

At the end of your journey, when you've finally reach enlightenment, you will realize that You can't change anything. And that every happening in this world belongs in this world. When that time comes, no longer will you see the world in good or bad.
Maybe they never said their is no problem? I would think deep down it does effect you.
councioussnes is cool but it is too much ignorant what really happen in second war my father still alive 95 yrs old fight in Africa he didn't run away and he tell stories too
Did not like this. He's right, but there is something wrong with the way this was presented. Is the evolution that we are experiencing worth the cost of the the evil that has to be endured in the process?
I agree 100%.
Workdove you are using your mind
Over-population is the problem.
Eckhart wasnt present now.
Remembering a past incident happens only NOW! Planning a future event happens only NOW. Nothing ever exists/happens outside of NOW.
Think he struggled with that question and the answer was a bit of a let down
Why was it a let down? He basically said the evolution of human consciousness is very slow...it goes through a nightmarish state and this intense experience can be or is the source of awakening out of narrow egoic identification
If you think that you probably do not know yet about the two levels of truth - relative and universal.
Summondadrummin - We are in a nightmarish state now. :'(
A master never answers the question. He answers the questioner.
No, the opposite is the case. The people who follow their ego's whims are the actual zombies.
I blame life and God for not providing necessary tools and guidance to create happiness.
Of course its my fault. But it could have been less violent.
I wonder what Elkhart thinks of the alt right and Richard Spencer
To make a comment on others suffering, is just that a comment. I can make a comment or, in other words give my opinion. A true, human response is to be both humbled to the point of having no words for such sorrow. However this man claims to be enlightened and therefore beyond mere humanity.
You think that enlightenment is not "mere humanity." You are wrong.
Enlightenment is not separate from "mere humanity."
Ignorance is bliss...
If a warm glass of milk could talk
No, one cannot
When is he going to answer her question??
Jullios Evola fight in second war he wrote many books but is not allow to read anymore I have some books from Evola I agree wars are stupid but when happen people must choose one side why nobody can read Evola any more because he choose he agree Mussolini?
Vietnam Irak Syrien Afghanistan Jemen Kurdistan Israel Palestina Libanon Mali Libyen Angola kongo Boko Haram Burundi Sudan Nepal Ukraina
I would ask this woman, what does she thinks about what israel does to the palestinians? She feels guilty?
With your question, you prove you missed the point...
This woman is not from Israel. She's from the US.
seguiriya1 How on earth do you know the lady doesn't like discussing the reality of t h e terror in the Middle East? In what way is it h e r terror? Only because she is Jewish? I believe this is something Eckhart calls 'judgement' and does his best in trying to move people beyond it.

First!
I wish my videos would go viral.😂
Manuel Meister It’s not so much about death as it is about suffering. Animals in the food industry are subjected to a lot of pain and fear.
The ultimate question comes up:
Which is worse: suffering or death?
Your humanity is at stake, not your super-humanity." (So Eckhart 'going all the way' is not at stake.)
'Just to think that you are killing an animal to eat, just the very idea, is unaesthetic. I am not against it because the animal is killed… because that which is essential in the animal will live, it cannot be killed, and that which is nonessential, whether you kill it or not, is going to die. So that is irrelevant, that is not a point for me to consider."(Re-read this paragraph to be free from the feeling of shame)
To his disciples he said: "That meat which you are eating belonged to an animal body. It had a specific purpose there. A specific type of consciousness existed in the animal’s body. You are on a higher plane than the animal’s consciousness, and when you eat the animal’s meat your body goes to the lowest plane, to the lower plane of the animal. Then there exists a gap between your consciousness and your body, and a tension arises and anxiety arises."
So it is better for us, for whom the permanent shift in consciousness had not yet happened, not to eat meat.
