I really like that you explained how to turn those disadvantages into learning experiences. A lot of times you just see videos of people ticking off the list of things they don't like without coming up with creative ways to combat them. This video can really help new coders (and maybe some experienced coders who still battle with these things) learn how to turn negative aspects into something more positive. Thank you!
I started online classes but haven’t logged in for the past 4 weeks because I felt like I was in over my head and got discouraged.I’m a hairdresser with no medical background but watching your videos is making me want to give it another chance.
Please don’t give up or give in if you’re still taking the class, I had a few set-backs; computer issues, medical problems, but I refuse to give in. God bless you through your journey.
I am glad that my instructor had me watch one of your videos, now I have subscribed to you and watch what you are talking about. I am now going back to college and I want to become a coder. Thank you for all your insights and your wisdom.
Thank you coach! As a student coder those particular disadvantages perceived by you hasn’t deterred me although the productivity is a bit freighting 😬. I really appreciate, and it made me smile how you made each of those challenges an opportunity to learn and grow.
Thank you Coach for putting your experience honestly and openly to encourage me to work in this field. This video help me to check my weakness when learning medical coding and how I can pick them up to turn into strength in learning process.
Hi Coach, I love your quote “ Made me Irreplaceable “ . Thankfully the place I work for has not assigned productivity standards, however I made sure I was coding up to “speed” before I was sent home to work remotely. With that said I always start with the highest dollar charts , since no one wants them. Lol. I love a challenge, and I’m learning more every time I code a challenging chart. I love what I do, we are having an audit now, so will wait to see what happens. On another note, Amazon has blue light readers that you can buy with magnification. I bought some with only +1 for magnification, as that’s all I need for now. Thank you for posting this, look forward to more videos. Take Care.
Hi Daisy. I sure miss you in class. I am so proud of you. You really got your certification and did not play. You went right to work. I will definitely look on Amazon for the blue light readers. Best of luck on your audit. Although, I'm not worried. You are a strong coder. Take care and stay in touch.
Thank you so much for your videos. I am a qualified dentist who moved to Australia couple of years ago. And my degree is not valid here. So I am looking for altenative careers. I am just scared because I have no coding experience. But your videos even the one with disadvantages gave me some courage. It is obvious that how much you like to be a medical coder which is great! I hope I can also find the right path for myself .
Audits are bloodsuckers everywhere. You work on 500 patients per week, 2000 per month. 6000 for 90 days and there is just one slight thing you missed out and it ends up becoming an email lecture series. But it's part of the life. 😂😂
Turn your audits into a learning opportunity! Love that statement and is one I will remember. Great video! Thanks for sharing your expertise! Yes! is the answer to the question is medical coding something I still desire to do. Your videos are very inspiring! Thanks a lot!
Another dissadvantage is being tossed into a field without if properly being trained in it. With a reply "youbare just doing E/M. Its the same. No extra training". Makes me have second thoughts. I used to love my podiatry and currenty being asked to help out in cardio. Its becoming a dread everyday. Plus, I dont even like cardio. Like at all.
Gm Codemaster Coach please send me more videos. My externship is coming soon and im not ready yet…I don’t want to make any mistakes, but I know it’s training for me and I know I can do it. Please help and thank you.
Hello my name is Lynnell I am new to this and I am in school for this professor now from home, but I work in the medical field as an HHA for 14 years I felt I needed a change so here I am in school at my age. Thank you for the things I should look out for and I can't wait to get started.
What happens when you can't finish all of the charts in your day? What happens when you're sick or you're unable to work that day? Do you have to work weekends?
When you finish your charts, you can step in an help others or clock out. When you are sick, others step in to complete your charts for the day. Your work schedule is determined by you and your organization.
I am so so glad I found your channel. I am enrolling back in school in May to take up Health Information Management in Coding and I'm excited and neverous at the same time. I'm trying to get as much information as I can. I worked as a eeg technician for 6 years and now I want to switch to something more behind the scenes in Healthcare. I will keep your videos in rotation while I go through my new journey!
I work in medical records right now and in my final year of my BSHIM/RHIA. I'm leaning towards working in medical billing and coding. I already sit for long periods of time and have to read a lot. I worried about audits and productivity requirements.
so now I gotta get up and cherry pick the codes just to getrdone...GAD...thank you for this video...you are really helping us to get the job done and learn...you are amazing....sitting for more than 14 hours to start...kinda like when I drover for FEDEX at first...ya the stuff we have to go through...Ill get a computer lift ya!!!
I totally agree with you..there are some charts harder than orders and it might take longer to code..there instances that I need to research or reach out to a co-worker for assistance especially when coding surgery. But with all the disadvantages you mentioned, I really enjoyed my job. I usually eat at my desk but there are days that I need to get out of the office..just to take a break away from the office.
Thank you Codemaster for sharing the disadvantages as well as the advantages (other video). Very helpful to know as I started courses to hopefully become a med coder😊
Currently working as a Claims Tech, and have been thinking about going to school for Coding/Billing. I'm kind of nervous. Especially the making sure I get the required amount out 😩
I am looking into medical coding specialists for some part-time work. I really admire your honesty and helpfulness with this video. I am a little nervous about starting my training course and pray that I can do it. I've been out of school since 1988 and feel lost with going back into school learning now. What advice can you give someone looking into this career and starting back with school learning as an older lady in age now? Thank you Liz
Elizabeth King, don't let age stop you. My best students are my older students because they really want the training. Set aside a study schedule and stick to it while in class. You can do this!

Hello and nice to meet you I have several years of medical background as Certified Medical Assistant/phlebotomist and also Registered Respiratory Therapist but with Covid I’m thinking about switching to non patient care. How do I go about with gaining certification as a medical coder? Also I’m thinking about going back to get my bachelors in either Health Information Management or Healthcare Management, which would suggest?
Hi Candice Daniel, I recommend viewing two websites: www.AAPC.com and www.AHIMA.org. Should you have questions, feel free to email me at CodeMasterCoach@gmail.com
Martin Pierce, I don't consider continuing education as a disadvantage. I actually consider continuing education an advantage because it keeps me current in my coding skills.
That would be very difficult because you need the book to look up the codes. There are electronic books but you cannot take electronic books into the exam, so I would not recommend studying with electronic books.
How many coding encounters per hour are you suggesting we are able to do??? I know some are more difficult and some less difficult. I was told by my HIIM department Manager that he expects his coders to solve no less than 90 encounters(charts)...per day that breaks down to 90/8 = 11.25 further 60/11.25 equals solve the codes so thats every 5 min....ask me to do more and ILL BREAK
