I can only think the dislikes were from people trying to watch pictures of cats jumping into boxes. There certainly isn't anything more I'd have wanted from a video entitled "Understanding Iambic Pentameter" than what you included. Thank you for the awesome work on UA-cam.
First this is an awesome explanation of a subject I BARELY understood but now feel extremely comfortable with. Second it completely changes how one reads epic poetry and the emotions that are conveyed are a lot more clear. I will definitely recommend more people to see this.
One of my boys mapped a whole hidden world in his head using iambic pentameter, it took acid for me to even come close to understanding how he did it, hes a genius and this is the video he recommended me, he even shaped his room into a perfect sphere using objects and items hung up various ways, you never truly know how much of a genius someone is until they really show you
Brilliant video. Thank you. My professor explained this in class, but whizzed through it so fast that a lot of us were confused. Your steps made it very easy to understand. You're a wonderful teacher.
Thank you. I'm the kind of person who gets frustrated what I'm trying to wrap my head around a word , and it's much easier to understand iambic pentameter with your explanation.
After many months of ruthlessly going mad, having no idea of what iambic pentameter is, comes this video and everything seems perfectly alright and IAMBIC PENTAMETER makes sense now to me! Thanks a ton for this explanation. 🙌
I have to write a shakespearean sonnet for my poetry course...its a completion grade so long as we follow the rules of that sonnet style. This was the only rule i did not completely understand ...you have successfully taught me! Thank you!
Watched this in English on Monday having a test on this tomorrow. Some of the questions come from this video. Thank you so much for posting this too! I can rewatch it till I understand it.
OMG you don't know how much this is helping me..I need to understand iambic pentametres for my English literature course, thanks a lot for explaining it so well!
Iambic pentameter is very pliant, and accommodates an array of variations that go far beyond what is covered in this video. For a fuller exploration, google 'versemeter'.
so clear, so well explained, thanks so much. I needed this to understand why Emily Wilson chose the iambic pentameter for her translation of Homer's Odyssey.
Thanks so much! Much easier to understand if someone actually explains it step by step than when reading the wikipedia article. Especially when you're a layman.
Oh, why, oh why, didn't the Internet come into my life when I was much younger, and especially when I was in college. So much info at the touch of a key! What more could I want? And now a thorough understand of not only an iamb but iambic pentameter. And now on to iambic hexameter as in the Alexandrine 9th line of Spencerian stanza, the previous eight in iambic pentameter.
I am an upper level English major, and I have to say that this video has taught me more about Iambic Pentameter than any of my professors. So this was very helpful in clarifying so vague notions in my head. My issue, though, is that when I try to do it, I force an accent where there doesn't need to be one. When told to write some heroic couplets, which are two lines of iambic pentameter that express a complete thought, I struggled just a bit.
Inside No9 a program on BBC 2 tonight was written in this format and lots of people were taking about it on twitter and I had never heard of it before. So interesting to learn about as I felt there’s was a rhythm that came from the character lines but I couldn’t figure out how they were doing it Very clever well done to the writer
I completely understand the theory of it,what with the alternating syllables and the stress, but it's putting it into practice that gets me; I have a hard time telling which syllable is stressed and which isn't, though I'm getting a bit better by trying to imagine the word with the stresses flipped. I don't have to know this for school right now, but I find it very interesting because poetry is a hobby of mine and I'm rather fascinated by linguistics. Great video!
This helped me a lot. We're studying Romeo and Juliet, and we have to write a sonnet. Plus, you have excellent grammar, other than that single slip up, but you corrected it.
I mean, just for the REcord, all of the words you used had one SYLLaBLE (unLESS you proNOUNCE learnED learn/id/, in which case the CAPitaliZATION would still be inCORRECT.)
Thanks for the great comment. Polysyllabic words can be confirmed by looking in the dictionary. With monosyllabic words, you can assume that the more important words are the ones accented. Articles and prepositions are often unaccented. Sometimes the accent changes the meaning of the sentences. See next comment.
In the second verse of the song "Rock the casbah" by The clash, it goes "The Bedouin they brought out, the electric camel drum, the local guitar picker got his guitar picking thumb" I always thought that was a very fine example of iambic pentameter.
this format of literary interpretation is the exact reason foreigners have a difficult time learning english based on it’s perceived simplicity. “yes” there are less characters to than in asian languages , but the ability to express thoughts & emotions based on verbal emphasis is something many other cultures don’t grasp & understand.
Thank you so much, you're way better than my English teacher, I'm going to do well on my Macbeth homework, I'm going to steal those examples you just used. But, I do actually get it now, thanks :D
I think it went well (I'm due to get my results in August), the poem that came up was "The Second Coming" by Yeats which follows a rough iambic pentameter- this video really helped me, thank you!
Excellent tutorial, Oh how I wish it had have been the first one I had tried. Sadly, I have had a poem published in a compilation and I had never heard of this. Now I will have to dredge it up and see if it conforms.
Brilliant sir , well done, you have a great ability to deliver and explain such hard subject, could you please make full analysis about the poem, stanzas, stress and unstressed, metaphors, pun, etc...., and i’ll be pleased and enjoyed of being watching you.
Wow. Thank you so much. Please stay tuned. I am going to upload a more advance version at some point and maybe one for people who still struggle with it.
Kevin Brookhouser Sure thing sir, you’ve earned a subscriber already, so am waiting, but I have a question, is there any difference between Accented, unaccented and stressed , unstressed? Because they look the same to me.
I thought I had it till you reached the example of "Shakespeare" which I thought for sure you were going to say that it's the "speare" that is emphasized, in that Michael Gambon/Old Vic sort of way.
If all current knowledge was explained the way this video explained iambic pentameter, the world would overflow with wisdom and wise people.
Exactly!
Trueeee
I can only think the dislikes were from people trying to watch pictures of cats jumping into boxes. There certainly isn't anything more I'd have wanted from a video entitled "Understanding Iambic Pentameter" than what you included. Thank you for the awesome work on UA-cam.
They tried teaching us this in uni the other day, always struggle getting my head around it...this SERIOUSLY helped
Did you really do this in uni?

I actually read this comment in iambic pentameter style
this aged very well
Brian Lam yep 👍

@@Jaden94 woah jaden?! you're here too huh
I've never had a student cry before ... at least not because he or she was happy about something! Congratulations!
This helped me so much! Honestly though I spent the entire video thinking about how much you sound like Jesse Eisenberg..
omg yes. I didn't think of it but now I can't un-hear it.
First this is an awesome explanation of a subject I BARELY understood but now feel extremely comfortable with. Second it completely changes how one reads epic poetry and the emotions that are conveyed are a lot more clear. I will definitely recommend more people to see this.
This is an absolutely fantastic explanation. All killer. No filler. THANK you.
Thanks Adam!

There's a fine line between Genius and Madness. Never forget that.
Brilliant video. Thank you. My professor explained this in class, but whizzed through it so fast that a lot of us were confused. Your steps made it very easy to understand. You're a wonderful teacher.
Thank you. I'm the kind of person who gets frustrated what I'm trying to wrap my head around a word , and it's much easier to understand iambic pentameter with your explanation.
it's great that in my native language, every single word has the emphasis on the first syllable, without exception.
Which is?
Samuel Rochon finnish.
annoyingly, it makes recognising iambic pentameter somewhat tricky. at least without practice.
Ah yeah it must be very difficult!
I think in Latin languages it's the opposite, the stress is always at the end.
@@yuzan3607 Polish is also latin and we have always accent on penultimate sylable.
This is so clearly explained! I love the step-by-step breakdown!
Thank you for a thoroughly useful video. Videos like these prove the instructional potential of the internet and make it better.
After many months of ruthlessly going mad, having no idea of what iambic pentameter is, comes this video and everything seems perfectly alright and IAMBIC PENTAMETER makes sense now to me! Thanks a ton for this explanation. 🙌
Wow. Thank you so much for taking the time to comment, Rosemary. That is really kind. I'm glad this video helped!
It's clear concise and to the very point.
And furthermore, probably the first time I really feel like I understand it.
Thank you.
finally! there are so many videos about iambic pentameter but none that really talk about how stress works like this does. THANK you.
I've read a few definitions and examples, but this is the clearest one I came across by far. Thank you!
I still don’t know when words in verse are unaccented and when they are accented
I think accented as a stressed sound
Wow, its not often that watching UA-cam actually makes you SMARTer. Thanks for posting this.
This is how to make an explanation. now anybody wishing to understand can do so. Excellent job.
I just wanted to say thank you for uploading such a helpful explanation of iambic pentameters!

Thanks. Glad it worked for you.

I agree with the comment below, this sheds more light than any other video I have watched on this subject.
That was great. It resonates in such a primal way; a drumbeat that seduces hypnotically.

Great video!
Excellent, my dear Brookhouser! Simply excellent!
Thank you for this! I'm trying to write a sonnet and i could not quite get pentamic iambeter until now.
Fun fact! Sonnets specifically use iambic pentameter because it sounds like a heartbeat, which fits with the theme of love
Excellent, thank you.
Thank you so much! FINALLY I understand how it works.
