Crescent Ilions :The Best Retro Trials Bike You Never Knew Existed (Probably)

- The Pashley 26mhz was the most requested bike build I've had so here's one of the least.
Ok I'm sure plenty of you do know about this bike but I'd bet you're an older trials rider, I'd be surprised if any younger riders or non trials riders know about this one.
The Crescent was a popular comp bike in the very late 90s and early 2000s, mainly with Scandinavian riders but also north Americans oddly. In the UK I never saw any of these personally and I don't think I've ever seen one in the flesh before. They were often built into extremely light bikes and I always thought they looked so nice!
I'm quite lucky to be sent this frame as they were never known for their strength and finding one in good condition is getting harder and harder, HUGE thanks to Ralf Hesse for loaning me the frame and retro parts, also big thanks to www.tartybikes.co.uk for helping with extra parts needed.
I hope you enjoy the build, it's nice to have a bunch of older parts to try and build a more accurate era version, I'm looking forward to riding it!

Another great build.
If anyone tries this please add caustic soda(or any chemical) into the water not the other way round. Add slowly and you wont get a violent a reaction.
Ps. A safer way is to put part in empty paint tin not quite fill with sand then skake. Harder but no burny chemicals.
This vids are incredibly satisfying to watch. They share unique knowledge and teach us the history of this sport from the inside. Even better, the format and the execution are perfected. Nod to you, sir. You do a great job.
Really love how much effort your putting into your videos every week! That’s so good for trials. Thanks Ali! 🙏🏻🙏🏻💪🏻
Nice! How about a brisa b26d next?
Evolve and revolution were amazing videos
11:42 damn your power is so strong that your fork turned too!!!
Coolest trials frame of all time! And clearly the universe wanted it to have carbon bars, like Kleivard's old custom ones
this is probably my fav series on your channel sir..
and off cousre the riding of these bikes
Hi Ali! Those build videos are extremely relaxing bro! I am not sure if you noticed but you had actually two Polish accents, one with "wodorotlenek sodu" caustic soda, your chemistry is definitely from Poland, and second which might be my guess, but Deore LX were pretty famous at early '00 in Poland, and we used to give them handmade Cr-Mo rockrings :) Either way, cheers from Poland - Rado.
It magically appeared to stop raining when you straightening the rim your powers must be wheely strong!🤭
Thank's Ali. Love your bike building videos!! Being from Sweden it's extra cool that you're building a Crescent! Cheers
Who can buy a carbon bar accidentally???
The dropped top tube (or raised seat stays, depending on your perspective) remind me of old KHS and Rocky Mountain hardtails, both of which I love.
fast forwarded the video because i dont want to read :D
would love to hear your voice in videos :)
Nah i prefer it without the voice, these are some super chill and calm videos that way
I love the fact that noone is talking but you hear the noises from building up the bike. It transports the same meditative quiteness I love when building my own bikes. Good choice, Ali.
9:08 wodorotlenek sodu - Polska pozdrawia!
Another cold stone classic Ali :-) I love this series of videos, building and riding the bikes that shaped the scene. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that another one of your kind viewers will lend you a Pace RC250T..... seeing Chris riding one in MBUK was inspirational. 😃 There are so many iconic frames from that era. Long may these vids continue, thanks so much for making them.
Happy your channel is back and running. By the way that frame is beautiful. Don't ride trials but would be sick to have one hanging on the wall
So funny, just bought a big wheel BMX bike (Haro), and it's the first splined crankset I've ever owned, and it's the first thats ever given me any problems...
To speed up removing spikes without cutting you need to get a cheapo flat blade screwdriver or long reach bit and carefully file the end of the blade to give it a nib. If it's a screwdriver cut off the handle. Boom drill bit for spoke removal.
Really beautiful bike!!! Wish you good luck with riding!!
solid embouchure!
WTF you are in poland?!???? wodorotlenek sodu was written on that package lmao
I still have the black with orange version of the crescent ilions complete bike. Have not ridden it for a long time. With front disk brake and mavic 517 front rim. Really light setup. The short chainstay makes rear wheel moves very easy and controllable.
Looks very oldschool, but nice as could be). Its seems soon you wiil have a museum of bikes, because its raining often)). Oldschool technique of building wheels using hammer and foots is the best for all time))haha.
I love your builds and tricks
It’s peaceful to watch
Soo cool, I had one back in -99, all the Martin's and Martyn as the inspiration of course!
Great build!
Awesome vid. You know so much about bike maintenance! I have a friend with a young teenage kid who wants to start doing urban trials. I think im going to try to find him some used bike and build it out for him. I cant afford to buy him a new $2000+ USD bike, and a beginner doesn't need that. Any recommendations for good buys on the used market?
I had NO idea there was 4 bolt mounts around in 1999, i thought was a new exciting thing in 2003
Enjoying the retro bike vids. Could you do a planet x zebdi trials kings build?
Caustic soda! Learn something new every day. Ta!
OMG Ali, you are so funny! Thank you for this delightful video!
Wait... Do you play trumpet or something similar becasue you blew that bar like a mouth piece on a trumpet 😂
Looks super cool but that seat!?! Not doing it for me! 🤣 great build Ali.. 👌🏽
I want to see you ride a Megamo Radical or Equip....
Having a pashley at the time then watching evolve good times
Also watching chris akrigg on his red pace and Eddie tongue good times
Hey, maybe the next build is a brakeless bike? For example, on the Alias Frame.
Another awesome bike built. Can’t wait for the ride
You can put grips on using brake cleaner instead of wd40. I do it on my motorcycle and you don't even need to wire them up!
Looks like you will be running out of room for all these wet week bike builds?
Move east for better weather?
Hey Ali, I wanted to ask if you would like to make such a video with the first inspired trials bike?
Also another thing can anyone remember the make Rocket??
This would get a super nice on gmbn. It's so orange
Funny i did the exact same think with xt crank on my first trial bike ...
Anybody else want a bike check from him
Yeah haha, I broke a square bb last month, turned out to be an expensive repair
:( memories.. I had one it got stolen 2002 :(
8:41 AHH WHERE IS YOUR OTHER HALF FINGERNAIL ??!
What gearing ratio did you end using? Great Video!
What a wonderful serie Ali!!
"Much fasterer"... You from Suffolk?! 😂 Great build. I'd love to learn how to lace wheels.
the Sheldon Brown guide is very good.
@@rouxenophobe Thankyou.
10:00 on todays show, chemestry wirh Ali, we will turn colours in silver, and try to not die from lack of air
chemistry with Al
fixed it for you ;-)
i want to put some of those hydro rim brakes on a bmx bike
One of my favourite bike also
I lost my evolutions dvd :(
Despite the saddle i like this build!
Nice Dead Meadow tee, great band
Comparing your Hex to the retro builds: Are disc brakes front and rear better for street trials and Maguras on the back/discs up front better for traditional trials? Great videos. Just got some rigid forks for my Saracen Xile homebuild as trials draws me in, although in hindsight perhaps could have chosen a better frame with shorter chainstays!
Some old the older frames weren't braced appropriately for disk brakes in a trials context
I love your retro bike builds. I’m 34, grew up riding non stop trials until i was 21, spent a few years building up a chrome Handsome Dog frame and only stopped when i had it stolen.
I got back into big bikes around a couple of years ago, but after years of watching your channel, especially these old school builds I’ve decided to buy an old trials bike off ebay and given it a major overhaul. Been a fun project, its a red MAD Phase 1.2. Incredible condition. It’s mad how much of the trials skillset i got back in the first few weeks riding it! Anyway, keep doing these builds, would be sick to see you build up a Chris Akrigg PACE trials bike, I loved his bike back in the day!
Your video's get better every time. I remember watching evolve over and over in my mates bedroom on VHS back in 2001ish, good times. That wheel built was incredible to watch! Really nice bike, can't really remember seeing one though. The mad science lesson was brilliant but I'm afraid it was sacrilegious stripping the blue anodising off the old hope. Look forward to the next video.
Fantastic, enjoyed the wheel building and the chemistry! Let's see how long those Wellgo Mg pedals last, I went through 2 pairs very quickly.
Was wondering when this might get done. I had a slightly mod modern version of the frame. Matches the one of the video you shared. I did a super silly high end, super light build with Fatty forks, king rear, Crossmax SL I think. Should be pics around somewhere. Maybe TF
My first bike this ! =)
2:20 - Classy 'Look Around You' Reference :-D. Best source of scientitious education ever made.
This bike reminds me on my first monty trials mtb, with square downtube and 1 1/4 inch headset. ☺ the Crescent looks better. Ps. Love your retro builds.
If ever you take a weekend off, how about letting the cool thief (aka ‘The Dude’) present the show? He’d be purr-fect!
UNCLE G.
is the moggy yours now ?
its geometry is the DREAM!
For those bent rims, there's always Bikeman4U's IBM PC technique.
That seat is hysterical!
Watching this makes me feel old. A thumb shifter, yeah I remember buying a pair Shimano XT shifters in a shop when they were released... Great video. I think you need some more proper tools for fitting the head set and the bottom bracket.
Relaxing this is the best
Wow this bike looks sick!
that saddle is hilarious
Absolutely perfect 💪🏻 Great bike, great build! Thank you Ali for this bit of trials history 👍🏻
Long Chainstay again like the Pashley? Ronnie rims nice! Caustic Soda trick is cool! Another sweet looking ride.
Non-disc front hubs are really nice, so simple. I'm planning on building some 20 and 26 inch trials wheels soon, so excited to grind some rims and customize some hubs to match like in this video.
I’d completely forgotten about these bikes! They always looked great back in the day.
Helluva bike
Thank you for sharing this video.
21:40 : your way to fit pedals is the best !!!😂
Greetings from Italy
Martin was an awesome trials rider, still is I guess. I met him several times in the 90’s and he even did a show in my home town once and jumped on top of a car, did pedal hops between stacked pallets etc. Good times!
This is a great video to watch while taking shower in the evening after a work day... So relaxing :) Thank you for the content! ❤️
Evolve was just an incredible video. I watched it so many times it died.
The holy grail lol
I watched every second of this video. It brought me back 20 years. Damnm thanx for that man!
I had this kind of seat back in the days on my Koxx eject🤙 and they were not the best for long distance 🤣🤣🤣
The old mag levers were so much better, more like mototrial style, and I had a few micro seats on my bikes back in the day...
awesome video
That wheel build must have taken ages, good job! I also loved polish NaCl 😂
Another great 👍 build Ali, I love that bright orange colour, it certainly pops in the dull light 💡.
i really like your bike build videos ! just the way you present it! ive watched every one
In the fridge! 😂
Matching allen keys. That's serious attention to detail, Ali!! 3:53
UA-cam ads cover all your writing on the bottom Ali, how about moving the text to the top or something, just an alternative
thought.
Sooooooo cool!
These back wheel nuts are making me nuts! Anyone knows where to get them?
When you service Magura brakes at home do you use water or oil?
EPIC
Hi
Wow, amazing work on getting the bent rim un-bent!!!
Nice Ali 👌
