  • In this episode of Tuna On Toast, Stryker sits down with David Beno Benveniste, CEO of Velvet Hammer Music and Management Group. Beno is the man who signed System of a Down, and he reveals how he discovered the band and what it was like working with Rick Rubin on their albums. Beno’s other clients include Avenged Sevenfold, Korn, AFI, Alice in Chains and Deftones. He told Stryker about Davey Havok’s greatness, what makes Jerry Cantrell such a great musician, how Jonathan Davis strives for success and why he wanted to work with M Shadows and the A7X guys long before he ever signed them. Beno also shares advice for bands starting out today, as well as the concept of artists as “brands” that can build relationships with fans over years. Velvet Hammer also co-created the Sick New World festival. Beno reveals how that event came together and what the future holds for it. Bands are not brands. Does Coca-Cola release records? Do they go on tour?
Why make a coffee out of a band “brand”?
Maybe you should encourage your band “brands” to release more records than t-shirts or branded products. A music culture is created just by the music.
I will never forget the day I first heard suite pee. I don’t even remember the day I bought a band t-shirt.

You're missing the point.... His job as a manager is to make these bands exciting to an audience. Band's job is music. But a manager needs to expand on that and create a vibe that makes the band more than just a collection of songs. People who don't work in the industry don't get that.

@@nihilist1280 Exactly his job is to manage bands not make them brands.
He should expand their potential in releasing good music not coffee. He can sell t-shirts of the new album (new music) on the tour where the band is playing their music. Not sit back and try and make them relevant by promoting their “brand culture”.
I know what’s happening in the industry but I disagree with Beno. He places music on the same level as band pins, shirts, coffee, cigars, band diapers, band fast food anything that we can sell to the public to keep the band “brand” relevant. It doesn’t matter if they don’t release any new music! Why should they anyway? It’s just a brand!!!
