A decade and a half later the country would be the site of another series of disastrous concerts featuring the band metallica. Local authorities would call it the “metallica incident”, but what happened? Stay tuned to find out
It was announced in March of 1993 that heavy metal band Metallica would be coming to Indonesia for the first time and playing a pair of shows on April 10 and 11th. Indonesia is a pretty religious country, in fact it’s the most populace muslim country in the entire world, but that doesn’t mean heavy metal isn’t loved by the nation’s youth. According to greenleft.org in 1993 Metal music cassettes, were found pretty much everywhere mostly in a pirated fashion. In the weeks and month leading up to the band’s arrival in the country.there were reports of a notable increase in the countries youth wearing black tank tops and headbands.
The capital city Jakarta in 1993 had a population 10 million people with more than half of the population being under the age of 20 and being underemployed or just not having jobs at all. A lot of young people would work in factories or as street peddlers. There was a lot of resentment and hostility towards the countries ruling class and even in the run up to metallica’s concert in 1993 riots were a frequent site.
The ticket prices for Metallica’s Indonesian shows started at $17 US going all the way up to $75, which was considered quite expensive as the minimum monthly wage for a lot of young people was well below even the cheapest tickets. In addition to that the venue only held 12,000 people per show, but some reports claim 20,000 tickets were sold, so yeah things were going to get real ugly.
And Metallica were on tour at the time promoting their 1991 self titled or black album And The first of 2 shows the band played were marred by problems. Initial reports claimed both people who had tickets but weren’t allowed in and those who didn’t have them tried to crash the gate allegedly throwing rocks at concert goers and security. The security got pretty heavy handed and the result was more violence and chaos. But also making matters worse was that the local promoter hadn’t anticipated such commotion and didn’t have enough security guards to police the event.
Regardless of the tension outside the venue the first show would go on as planned with 6,000 police and army soldiers standing by to keep order. Up to 110 people would be arrested following the rioting and 70 people were reported to be injured including some security guards. After disturbances outside the stadium were brought under control , gangs of youths went through surrounding areas setting fire to cars, malls and shops throwing rocks at upscale homes. Even the minister of justice would be trapped in his car during the rioting with his windshields being smashed, and driver being injured. The minster would also lose his cellphone and some jewelry to the mob.
The bus carrying the band arrived and was immediately surrounded by fans. The military moved in with canes to clear the way.
The rioting was ended after 1000 marines and military police came onto the scene, opening of the gates to the concert, letting thousands of people in for free with about half of those in attendance for the first show being paying fans. So according to some reports even paying fans got screwed over.
It was initially reported in the media that the riot and unrest happened because of class resentment. The ticket prices for the events ran 10 to 50 times higher than the daily minimum wage of the average Indonesian factory worker and the location of the venue was in Jakarta’s wealthiest suburb. The government tried to quell and silence any idea of class warfare telling academics and intellectuals not to “analyze” the event “excessively.’ Others in the country pointed at the ridiculous notion of the effect of heavy metal music on the countries youth Claiming it provoked anti-social behavior
There was even a third theory that the rioters were not metal fans at all, but members of Indonesian’s democractic party which had apparently appropriated some of the symbols of heavy metal in their 1992 election campaign.
Now the second show metallica played went a little more smoothly as the government deployed 7000 soldiers to police the event, but once again it was reported that thousands of fans who hadn’t paid for the concert still got into the

I’ve been to Indonesia like 5 or 6 times and it’s by far the most “Metal” and “Punk” country in South East Asia. And it’s much more mainstream than even the US. You watch the morning news/talk show, and then there’s a metal band as the musical act. Great country!
Even their prime minister or president was a big Metallica fan
@@rnrtruestories he was at that 1993 show
It seems in comparison to Deep Purple's ill-fated series of concerts in Indonesia in 1975, Metallica or at least some of their road crew experienced some of the same similar problems Purple did 18 years ago but it wasnt as fatal or the damages, material or fans, security personnel guarding the events weren't as deadly.
Indonesia from late 60s to 2001 was an oppressive, authoritarian, repressive police state whose leaders were recognized as creating a kleptocracy, a ruling party where a junta or civilian leadership steals millions or billions of dollars from foreign investment companies, kickbacks in international aid, prohibitive tariffs that stunt the nation's economy but are designed to make ruling elites richer. Indonesia's international status or its overall economy and most citizens standard of living had improved from mid-70s to time of Metallica showing up, but the iron-fisted, heavy police state was still there.
Indonesia is certainly overwhelmingly conservative Islam but its surrounding culture, and how it affects its citizens views towards the outside world is very different from let's say ME countries like Iran or Saudi Arabia, where in the former, it's pretty much an Islamic theocracy with a weak secular president which rules the country.
@@rnrtruestories yes our current president is a legitimate metalhead
EVH and Alex have Indonesian in them, which makes it more liked there.
I went to a show in Mexico in 1991. Gate tickets could only be bought using US dollars. There was a riot that brought down the fences but then it was a wonderful time.
I love this Channel , I learn so much about Rock and roll that I never knew each week
and each has a poignant topic that's worth thinking/talking about
So do we kid
Hell yeah! Love the details he goes through to find
Same. A lot of these bands I don't listen to or care about, but it's super interesting and told in a timely manner.
You should do a story about the Iraqi metal band "Acrassicauda". A fascinating tale about overcoming some pretty tough odds and going against cultural norms. They are a pretty shredding band too.

He was not the Minister of And Justice for All, apparently
I don’t remember hearing about these incidents at all! The last time I heard about a Riot at a Metallica concert was during the tour Metallica did with Guns N Roses in Montreal. The riots that took place in Indonesia must of not been heavily reported at the time.
Yeah, I was also thinking, how come there was no actual footage of the riots
Every time a big metal band comes to a third world country there's rioting, could be big, could be small, but there always is, lmao
Matías Sanchez I’m starting to realize this. Who knew that big Metal acts pretty much induce rioting when they play in third world countries!
@@archangel5627 Yup, when they came to my country they basically recreated the rioting scene in the Metallica movie. lol
Matías Sanchez wow, I had no idea and I hope no one lost their life during the riots. I’m sorry to hear that but at the very least with all the mayhem that went on I hope the overall concert was good.
I think something like this happened with Sepultura in 1992. In Indonesia.
@TBALLZ_973 Indeed. Chaos AD was released in 1992 I believe.

Totally touched tubes.
I saw Iron Maiden in Bali in 2011. It went very well. I think I paid something like $35. Great times!
The second show Metallica played went a little more smoothly as the government deployed a...metal militia. 🤘
Crazy, I remember reading about the Indonesian riots when Metallica played there 5 years ago, they rioted then too but not as bad as 93.
Makes u wonder why they keep going back
Money. 😂. Back in the day Metallica & megadeth wouldn't of conformed to censorship. Guns too. They play China they have to have a list of songs they can't Do! Chasing that 💵
gerard springer That’s so true. Money’s the root of all evil..💵💵💵
gerard springer halls of justice painted green LOL
They lost all integrity LONG TIME AGO. Got ur Metallica watch? Blackened Whiskey( James can't have none!) 250 dollar box set? 😂
wow, this is a really thought provoking topic - Indonesia is shockingly poor and it's questionable to imagine 'tocketmaster' or whomever is running the venue thinks that they can charge normal ticket prices. The cultural aspect is even more difficult to consider - what is the meaning of western heavy metal culture in a 3rd world country and how does it contrast with what we're used to?
if heavy-metal culture really sought to reach Indonesian youth, there are better ways to do that instead of patronizing them like this - reminds me of Eddie Vedder's feuds with Ticketmaster - there must be an overlap in these two subjects. Great Video Rock N' Roll True Stories!
@Christopher Bingham Especially Rage Against the Machine needs to be heard by the people - wouldn't that be awesome if they could just do a free show? Give the fans a break for once!
jo jo almost no musician does what they say. Do what I say but not what I do. Even when as a band say to hate capitalism then charge an exorbitant price to see you, after all music bands get money not by records but by concerts.
@@chibichan6421 True, True. The ones who do are the most memorable icons either internationally or in local scenes. Like Osvaldo Civile of Horcas (Argentinian Band) a guy spat on him in a concert and stained his guitar. The guy stoppped playing and pulled out a knife on the heckler XD. He got back on stage and went "Don't fucking spit on me, I will fuck.you.up" And sure thing he would have done so since Seccurity had to act to pull Osvaldo back rather than pulling the heckler out.
Not a big Metallica fan but I LOVE this channel. Great work, kid!
After this I think you should talk about the Conflict gig in Braxton Academy I believe it was where Steve from Crass was playing with them.
Love learning a bit more about my favorite bands 🤘
Thank you for clarifying that you were talking about the band Metallica
Missed you Sid hope you and the family are good
You ought to one about when the Beatles went to the Philippines. Similar outcome.

I was a BIG Metallica fan during the Black album tour, but I never hear this story before....
What a story! Hope things are better for Indonesia's youth!
You should cover the story of the Beatles and their disastrous trip to the Philippines in 1966.
Props for your thumbnail. I'm actually suprized he never got into acting.
Would have killed at horror.

I was here with my high school classmates...without the tickets 😎....we were let in by the police after halfway through concert....the sound and the band was awesome.....
I attended the concert in Montreal in 1993 where James got burned and GNR sucked horribly!!! And of course the riot that ensued after....that was the last time I saw either band live....
I've been present @ many "rock mobs" throughout my life. It's scary, because no matter how strong, clever, or fast u are, there's really nothing u can do but hope after a certain point. Z moment u realize this fact, a traumatic situation may occur (depending on relative circumstance). I had a former employee (he's also a talented musician 2 this day) that was @ z Station fire. I live in the area, so this was major news. I mean big time! I bring this up because when panic becomes widespread and MOB mentality sets into an entire crowd...people change. They become irrational...dark! U all would do well 2 take my word as truth here.
i had a stroke reading that
Cell phone in 1993? That shows how much difference was between the leaders and the people. People couldn't buy tickets but there were cell phones around in 1993.
Expensive Metallica tickets? Noooooo waaaaaay!
No shit
75 dollars in 1993 was expensive..
Not the first band to have a tough time in Indonesia.
I was there

Oh man I didn't notice it until I read your comment and now I can't unhear it
@@metalman40k it's the same for me. Once you start noticing it.... I just keep thinking "are you asking me, or telling me?"
Before metallica play. One thrash metal band named rotor was opening that concert after release their first album call behind the 8th ball.
2:02 Kirk looks like Little Richard
Who do you think was catching between Lars and Newstead.😬
Neither. They look like good friends.
Id guess at that point of their career James and Lars were butting heads egotistically so the band split into two camps, James,Kirk and Lars,Jason
Why did Metallica go back? Geeze.
#RockNRoll
The local promotor is part of the Republic oligarch. He is tremendously wealthy. owns Lamborghini, the company, among other things at that time. The riot cause multi million damage in infrastructure and Setiawan Djodi pays for everything like no biggie.
And don't forget just 5 years later in 1998, the harrowing riots leads to thousand death and topple the regime that has stood at the top of power for 32 years. So a lot anger already brewing in the capital. Even in 93.
I was junior high student at that time but remember how metal was considered mainstream for a brief moment lol. Metal is not frown upon here.
Side note, Mike Trujillo sent an autographed bass to our current president. And due to anti corruption law, he then has to submit the bass to the anti corruption committee due to its consider a gift. 🤣
Please excuse my English. This is a very long comment.
isn't it robert trujillo?
Nice ☺️

People will go see a rock and roll show not to mention if the costs were outrageous why would they not fucking start getting pissed if everyone should be entitled to see a show
The worst thing that has ever happened following a Metallica concert was Morgan Harrington's death.
Yes agree
Glad to hear some upscale housing got damaged. Imagine loosing a cellphone in that day
plop pill Ah, you’re one of those types of people. I’m too human to own a house that big. It’s morally out of my reach.
"Upscale" housing in Indonesia means one story, three bedrooms and running water. If that's "morally" unquestionable to you, then I take it that you've set the bar pretty low for yourself in life and will thus always be a failure that blames others for your lack of progress. You probably vote for Communist or Socialist candidates and spraypaint 'ACAB' on churches. How many Che Guevara shirts do you own, Comrade?
Marvin Harrison Smith II oh here we go with the politics when literally no one brought it up. Sounds like brainwashing to me. I’m a happy dude who loves to see people who don’t work hard but have all the money in the world crumble. Socialism/fascism/blahism/Democrats/republicans have zero to do with it. I suggest killing your news source and opening your mind a little because you can’t wear tin foil forever.
Marvin Harrison Smith II all I hear from you is “anything I don’t like is socialism”

True Metalocalypse...
Deep Purple nearly got killed in Indonesia in '75. They were to play one show to 7,500 but when they got to Jakata it turned into a 100,000+. One of their security guys was found dead at the bottom of a lift well. Their bodyguard was never seen again, Glenn Hughes and tour manager Rob Cooksely were arrested over the security guards death. Hughes being cleared to play with the band. The Indonesian army ( they were concert security) practically forcing the band on to the stage at gun point. The crowd rioted. The promoter had only paid a small up front fee to Purple's management, refusing to pay the rest of their fee and wanting another concert the following night. Purple managed to hire a plane that got a flat tyre, they then had to pay for the equipment to fix it and some of Purple's crew helped fix it. After escaping to Japan, where they were originally heading after Australia, their lawyer flew to Jakata to get what money was owing to the band. He was chased by the promoter around his office with a machette. This tour gave a whole new meaning to the song 'Mistreated' : "l've been mistreated, l,ve been abused".
You do know that when Deep Purple first arrived for the first of their concerts in Jakarta, they were met and were driven in their limousine on a huge highway surrounded by tanks.
Glenn Hughes has also stated that he had seen the bodyguard that died suspiciously in the band's almost empty hotel room involved in what appeared to be a very heated argument with one of the promoters the day before his death. After his release from the drummed up charges of killing his bodyguard, Hughes was led out of his cell at gunpoint, led to a motor car, driven to the stadium where his band mates were playing a set, and instructed not to inform them of what had occurred to them or their road managers while incarcerated.
IMHO, it's probably very fortunate for Richie Blackmore that by this point he had left Purple and wasn't around to face this near-fatal fiasco. Knowing Blackmore's difficult, hardass personality and nature, I can't see him being pushed around and bullied so easily as most of Purple members were during that tour. Even if it meant having an AK-47 or AR-15 pointed in his face by 20 soldiers, he was and still is not a man to be talked down to and he probably would've been a lot verbally critical of his and Purple's treatment under these circumstances.
Class issues, umm Metallica is rich af
I don't think back then indonesians take heavy metal pretty well
Soo basically it was Woodstock '99...just say it 😳
No piss pool sadly
Just blame the SHABU...
This makes it sound as if MetallicA only cares about money. Thankfully Napster proved that MetallicA was only trying to make a point by showing others the correct ways of the fans greedy wrongdoings.
Thankful that James now has that huge fishtank bar that has real gold accents in his mancave now.
Minister of Justice for All
Someone didn't do their math very well.. Why in the hell would they book a gig there knowing the poverty there especially knowing not many tickets wouldn't sell?... Thier manager poorly thought that out.... Js
bruh? what? they sold out.
I repeat : THEY SOLD OUT! from 12k ticket availlable, 20k is sold.
What a missed opportunity for Metallica to sue and prosecute all of those Indonesian kids for all of the pirated cassettes going around.
Yang orang Indonesia like..
I live in Jakarta and this doesn’t surprise me at all... it genuinely doesn’t take much for there to be a riot of some kind. My friend hosted an oasis tribute band night in a bar in the city center and 600-800 people tried to get into a small club which only held 200 and the people outside rioted, throwing rocks and trashing the place 😂 so I’m sure for Metallica it would be that 100 fold.
Well it probably doesn't help that the stadium is according to Lars "Located in a very rich part of Jakarta, where a lot of the old politicians, and old families lived"
Pretty damn ignorant of Metallica either way.
