Actually, it was NEVER considered comparable to computer programmer/software developer EVER in the almost 50 years I was a computer programmer/software developer! It was -- and is -- a very respected profession requiring tremendous skills and concentration but there is absolutely NOTHING equivalent technically. And, before you get your balls in an uproar, for all the skills and technical ability I had, I'd fade after one day of being an R/O. These guys earn my deepest respect and, if anything, were/are a critical link in keeping the maritime profession safe and providing communication. I cannot imagine writing software in a small cabin on a ship pitching and rolling on a storm-tossed sea.
I use to make similar sound using metals while growing up as a child. My father had a large collection of tool box and when he was away on Sundays that was the time to freely explore the house to find something useful for play. Sunday was the day I felt like I was the king of the house when father was not around.

Your arm will hurt after few minutes if you use the key that way . You have to swing the wrist, not the entire arm and to do so you've to "sit" your entire arm on the table from wrist to the elbow . Also that key need a "plate" under the knob...so your thumb and the 4th finger can sit . Your way is ok to have the glass arm in no time . Sorry.
You can't use a straight key of this design with your arm on the desk. Yes, the wrist must be flexible, but so must the arm be. And I agree, you need the disc under the knob for the thumb and and second finger.

That is the proper way to send CW with a straight key. These TV and movies show people tapping on the keys... that's all wrong. You wouldn't last 10 minutes doing that.
He's sending CQ CQ CQ DE HL1EJT HL1EJT PSE K = General call to all radio amateurs From HL1EJT [His callsign, which is from S.Korea. HL1 is the prefix that tells you what country he is from - the number often designates which region of the country - and EJT is the suffix, which is his own personal signifier], PSE means Please, and here K means go ahead any station. It is quite fast, especially as he is sending the Morse manually without the aid of springs, or electronic help at all. He has what we call a 'good fist'; in other words he sends clear, well-spaced Morse Code. He is transmitting on 14.016 MHz, at the lower end of what we call the 20 metre band, probably the most popular of all of our frequency bands on Short Wave.

To graduate from "A" school, the Coast Guard RM had to send 16wpm @ 96% accuracy and receive 18 at 98%. Higher rank required faster speeds. By the time you make E6, you had to all but have your speed key cert and send/receive 30wpm and use a speedkey. Most ops after a year or two at a Radsta or Commsta could use a strait key and hit mid 20's sending. Fun times back in those days. Still copy CW today just for fun. 73's
