Show me a sign of troubles in your heart Spare me your lies and tell me that you're mine And our bodies float on the river To the oceans of demise Made me a slave to the secrets of your silence But you told me to stay And you told me you're mine And our bodies float on the river To the oceans of demise In light of all things to come, why do you despair? Because when you have no one, no one would care So don't care And all things will come undone There is nothing to share I'll be waiting for no one And no one is there to care Can't see, can't feel You run, I long I wait, he comes Takes you away In the embers of summer All things must die There's a passage of fire ahead Fire on the other side There comes a time when the river runs dry Winter comes and we sacrifice Our lives
What an amazing band, they go from pure death metal to this, and everything in between. And at each stage of their progression they write amazing stuff.
Wolven Throne You can not like something but I hate when people say that music they don't like is "uninspired, meaningless etc.". Just because the musicians change what they want to do doesn't make it bad....no matter how much you might not like it.
As a musician, being forced to play the same genre with the same kind of everything just to please fans; would feel like working in a factory pushing a lever forever. Always renew and reinspire yourself.
I even like some of the new songs more than the old ones. I don't say ones are better than others, they just get more to me in this moment. I've changed. They have changed. And also their music has changed. And that's great, I love it
+donkikote I agree! I love everything the band has ever put out, the heavy music was there for me through the rough times. But the older I get the more I prefer their newer music.
Musicians change and mature throughout their lives and their music changes with them. This is what's happening to Michael Akerfeldt and his music. It's not selling out. Selling out would be to keep making death metal just to please old time fans.
I agree completely. I love their take on prog so much, and then there is the first section of this song that is not particularly proggy, but it is one of my favourite bits of music ever and that solo is smooth, golden perfection. Part of me wants that solo to be 8 minutes long. This was my first Opeth album and it's the first album for a long time that literally made me sit up and listen to every single note and love it from the first listen. It is superbly produced too. Some other modern prog band's sound exactly like every part has been recorded separately and fail to sound cohesive to my ear (dream theatre I'm looking at you...) But this just sounds so damn good. You hear every individual part but it forms a beautifully cohesive whole. I could go on but I already sound like a twat, lol. It's great, go listen to it again! ;)
There’s so much expression to be found in Mikael’s solos. The only one I can think of that may rival this is Windowpane or maybe the clean solo midway thru Bleak.
First time I listened to this I was thinking 'wow Mikael has made such a happy, heartfelt song for once' and then the song really does go down the river through turbulent rapids and finally into despair and demise. The whole song is a really masterful musical execution of the lyrical metaphor.
What they are doing with melody and harmony is out of this world. 2:33 - 2:38 - genius music move. I am very melodic-oriented, and I want to listen to this song forever, I want to play it, sing it, I want to live in it. "No one is there" - holy cow, these polyphonic voices...I could go on forever, this song is just so amazing. I actually love thrash metal and alternative, and my favorite band for years has been Metallica. Now I'm not sure which one I would name as my favorite one.
It's extremely hard for me to list my top 20 favorite Opeth songs, but there's no doubt "River" would make the cut. Love the acoustic intro, from there the song just keeps progressing. The whole thing is truly majestic.
Opeth is the only band in the world that can never be rated enough. Every album in their discography is a freakin perfection in their way. I dont wanna sound like I enjoy giving these guys credit but they deserve every praise possible. I hope they never stop experimenting and giving us more music , we dont know how lucky we are of being blessed listening and apreciating their music. May the gods bow to them...
Hey could you like advice me some great bands, I heard katanoia, porcupine tree and I just want to widen my list, I listen to all music man, from classical to hip hop to mainstream to metal and even trance, what can you say man once you pick up a guitar you just get sucked into the void bro...
Mellotrons plus key change at 5:38: some of Opeth's finest moments. The improved lineup has unquestionably helped Akerfeldt take Opeth to the next level musically.
Colin Estes Well no, as someone who has studied music his whole life, I can safely say that they have expanded musically and definitely become better musicians, and Mikael Åkerfeldt has definitely become far better as a vocalist. The music is subjective, you're allowed not to like it, but in musicality they've become far better
Trichila I love all Opeth but I am digging the style they’ve crafted and varieties they’ve done with their newer players. It’s almost like throughout their career, Opeth gets more Opeth-y as Mikael Akerfeldt puts out new Opethy strangeness
I had a hard time with the last two albums. I'm a death/black metal fan and absolutely loved all the stuff they have done, even damnation, but the new albums after really collaborating with Porcupine Tree I had a hard time with. As with most Opeth fans though keep listening and you will feel the depth of music in there and it touches your soul. Plus the raw talent they have in line up is ultra!
Not a huge fan of their heavier stuff or heavy music as a whole (some I can get into), but definitely into the softer prog. This whole album is 10/10 imo and should be mandatory listening for everyone at least once in their life. Timeless music.
The guitar solo sounds so much like Ritchie Blackmore. To me Opeth has a lot in common with Deep Purple. They continued what DP started and weren't able to finish cause they got distracted from the true path of progressive metal.
@@elliotdawson101283 I read somewhere that Ritchie is one of, if not the biggest influence of Mikael, and vocally he claims that although he can't sing as good as them, he's inspired by the likes of David Coverdale and Ronnie James Dio. So Mr. Åkerfeldt is very much in the whole Deep Purple/Rainbow/Whitesnake vein.
i am damn sure those guitar solos are a work of genius. Because we dont hear such scales/progressions normally. To make such solos/progressions, ears have to be trained to comprehend those scales and one must have very good technical understanding of music too.
Pale Communion is certainly the best of their post-Watershed albums to date IMO. I have high hopes for the new one releasing next month; from the tracks that have been released so far it sounds promising.
We will be there tonight at The Warner Theater in Washington DC to see them work their magic & they are going to love playing this venue as it's one of the best & last of the great concert hall left over from tons of 70s concerts. These boys will Rock like the Devil with his tail on fire !!!!
I like both old and new stuff Opeth has put out, everything is good in its own way, and they always have a song for whatever mood Im in, if anything I never have anything bad to say about the instrumentals, if Im doing any artwork, I always listen to Opeth haha
The last minute of this song is so intense I wish there were more of it, but it's really cool how it sneaks up on you after the rest of the song. I don't like this new direction as much as classic Opeth and I hope they bring back the death metal elements in the future, but there is a lot of unique and interesting material on this album and Heritage.
Show me a sign of troubles in your heart
Spare me your lies and tell me that you're mine
And our bodies float on the river
To the oceans of demise
Made me a slave to the secrets of your silence
But you told me to stay
And you told me you're mine
And our bodies float on the river
To the oceans of demise
In light of all things to come, why do you despair?
Because when you have no one, no one would care
So don't care
And all things will come undone
There is nothing to share
I'll be waiting for no one
And no one is there to care
Can't see, can't feel
You run, I long
I wait, he comes
Takes you away
In the embers of summer
All things must die
There's a passage of fire ahead
Fire on the other side
There comes a time when the river runs dry
Winter comes and we sacrifice
Our lives

They are a truly progressive band, one of the things I admire about them the most.
I even like some of the new songs more than the old ones. I don't say ones are better than others, they just get more to me in this moment.

I agree. Selling out is making music to please the audience, whether thats people who enjoy pop music or old time fans who want more death metal.
Opeth has always kept it real.
Jonas Svarholt as well as unreal but never boreal or corporeal. Those last two don't work.
Is there Opeth fan's here that love old stuff's and also this ?
here
Meee
Yes, there is.
Totally dig the old stuff and the new!
Yeah i love it all. Its incredible from orchid to sorceress
Unbelievable that this is the same band. But I highly approve of ALL styles Opeth has produced.
@@paradoxical33 yours and mine replies are important, yes.
Still alot of elements from their early days if you can notice. I love this band
Before I disapprove of your approval I'll need to ask my Mom for her approval... Ok, my Mom doesn't give a shit so I don't approve.
They are just perfect because they make so different high quality music
Bro i swear the end of this song is like the most hype thing ever for me
The solo starting at 1:50 is just stunningly, perfectly, shivers-down-the-spine beautiful...
***** man that solo, its just more than mindless notes played at supersonic tempos, that is just pure majestic....
I agree completely. True, but how about the one at 4:04 ?
The "in the embers of summer" part is perfection.
First time I listened to this I was thinking 'wow Mikael has made such a happy, heartfelt song for once' and then the song really does go down the river through turbulent rapids and finally into despair and demise. The whole song is a really masterful musical execution of the lyrical metaphor.
6:50 is probably my favourite moment of all new opeth! I just love the shit out of that last part of the song!
It’s just so good
I had this cd in the player in my car for literally like 6 months after it came out, and that part is one of the most nostalgic for me.
Don't know about you guys, but this track is the best one from Pale Communion in my opinion.
Agreed, I was dissapointed when I couldn't find a live version
Beside "Faith in Others"
Agree, River and faith in others are best from the album
Maybe, or maybe not. It's a taste matter
It's a great track, but to me Elysian woes it's the best song on Pale Communion
What they are doing with melody and harmony is out of this world. 2:33 - 2:38 - genius music move. It´s so easy...Opeth!
It's extremely hard for me to list my top 20 favorite Opeth songs, but there's no doubt "River" would make the cut. Love the acoustic intro, from there the song just keeps progressing. The whole thing is truly majestic.
That middle section acoustic part actually reminds me of Heaven and Hell outro.
Opeth is the only band in the world that can never be rated enough. Every album in their discography is a freakin perfection in their way. When someone gives me shit for not loving "Sorceress", I refer them to how much I loved "Pale Communion", and this track in particular.
This is one of the best songs Opeth has ever created. (From a Progger)
Ayur Bhatta amazing right? especially the solo at the beginning :D pure heaven
kiba vlood Yeah! True Eargasm.
Hey could you like advice me some great bands, I heard katanoia, porcupine tree and I just want to widen my list, I listen to all music man, from classical to hip hop to mainstream to metal and even trance, what can you say man once you pick up a guitar you just get sucked into the void bro...
+kiba vlood Check out Pineapple thief,Anathema,Pain of Salvation,Bloodbath,Leprous. They're all Prog. 😀
+kiba vlood Bloodbath is Mikael's other band. It's Melodic Death actually :) BTW check out Blackfield if you haven't.
Crosby, stills and akerfeldt. love it!
Nice one😂
hahaha
Poor Nash, he has become the roadie it seems lol
Love this song. This album is just incredible
if this song was released in the 70s it would be up there with some of the most iconic prog songs
the first solo is unbelievably beautiful
That solo section starting at 1:50, has an Allman Brothers vibe to it. Love it! For me, this band can do NO wrong....
There is something really Baroque about the guitar solo starting at 4:10. Guess Bach would have loved it.
So melodic, so beautiful.
Does this song make anyone tear up, it's so beautiful and filled with meaning.
+Opethfullcovers My God...I cried a river...and I totally agree with you!
my favorite song of the album
same here!
kshayk0 yep
kshayk0 Same, I hope the play it live one day.
+Rarity Sparkle Your a legend Rarity, lol. Thanks for uploading Stevens Vermilioncore
Masterpiece. One of the best songs of the album

Ackerfeels musical evolution reminds me allot of les Claypool evolution
6:20 Amazing
I have been listening to pretty nothing else but Opeth for 2 weeks and they have become my favorite band ever
The sound at 2:21 when he changes from neck to bridge pickup on his guitar even sounds amazing. Happy to be giving this album another listen.
I had a hard time with the last two albums. I'm a death/black metal fan and absolutely loved all the stuff they have done, even damnation, but the new albums after really collaborating with Porcupine Tree I had a hard time with. Steven Wilson has been involved with Opeth since Blackwater Park. He did a lot of the keys and backing vocals in that era.
Beautiful! It reminds me a lot of rock bands from the 70s era 🎧💕
Thumbs up if you consider River one of your favourites!
Those harmonized voices. What a magical song. Amazing to play on the guitar.
This may be playing at my wedding. It's so beautiful.
With that vibe and lyrics, I'd reserve this for the funeral...
Favorite track. Absolutely love everything about this one.
This song was the highlight of the album for me, personally. I"m along for the ride with this band, whatever they put out.
The universe aligns when this song is played. Magical.
I love the folk influence on this song. My favorite song on the album!
Not a huge fan of their heavier stuff or heavy music as a whole (some I can get into), but definitely into the softer prog. This whole album is 10/10 imo and should be mandatory listening for everyone at least once in their life. Timeless music.
This is their best song. Its just unreal
I love this video format so much where images are shown while the music plays!!
The guitar solo sounds so much like Ritchie Blackmore. To me Opeth has a lot in common with Deep Purple. They continued what DP started and weren't able to finish cause they got distracted from the true path of progressive metal.
agree - this particular album gives me Led Zeppelin IV & Physical Graffiti vibes too
Mikael is pretty much the all time #1 Deep Purple and Ritchie Blackmore fan so makes sense that he'd pull from the style.
I like the old Opeth and this. No matter for me. Great song.
same
Those blues grooves are fucking tasty. Mikael has always had an incredible feel for blues.
Opeth = MUSICAL MASTERCLASS
i am damn sure those guitar solos are a work of genius. Because we dont hear such scales/progressions normally. To make such solos/progressions, ears have to be trained to comprehend those scales and one must have very good technical understanding of music too.
Im in love with this
These guys really are the most amazing musicians.

Yes Juan García. Hay un montón d canciones d ellos que haciendo un estudio d ellas puedes escribir un libro. O una saga, ja ja!!
I think this song represents the way Mikael wants Opeth to go. Beautiful beautiful piece of art it is.
Let the haters hate.. to me, this music is phenomenal! I love the progression and diversity with Opeth!
i love this Opeth
¡Que gran canción! Cuantos matices. Triste y feliz a la vez. Se me revuelve la cabeza. Opeth ♥
I love the organ at 3:20
Absolutely love the leads on this
The solo from 1:50 to 2:56.. *so* warm, so lovely! And from 4:00 on, Awesome!! Doesn't need to be metal to be headbanging material!!
Pale Communion is the only post-Watershed album I really enjoy and this song is one of the absolute best songs in their entire history.
Pale Communion is certainly the best of their post-Watershed albums to date IMO. I have high hopes for the new one releasing next month; from the tracks that have been released so far it sounds promising.
I never thought Opeth would make me bust out into a funky dance like I do at 4:01
ikr
That solo is just pure love.
Opeth is so amazing I just fell in love the first time I listened to them.Go prog!!!
We will be there tonight at The Warner Theater in Washington DC to see them work their magic & they are going to love playing this venue as it's one of the best & last of the great concert hall left over from tons of 70s concerts. These boys will Rock like the Devil with his tail on fire !!!!
Beautiful song
As an oldschool Opeth fan (from Orchid), this is way cool. Kind of like a Hangar 18 for Opeth.
But we need Orchid an the other early albums also.
This is a masterpiece of music composing
from 4:00 is pure talent flowing!
Holy shit...I'm revisiting this album, and I don't think I gave it the credit it deserves. I guess some albums hit at certain times.
That solo!!!!!!!! Always been a huge Opeth fan, mostly just for these!
I love this song so much, my favorite off Pale Communion.
Pale Communion is brilliant.
This is my favorite song of theirs, pure magic 🖤
I like both old and new stuff Opeth has put out, everything is good in its own way, and they always have a song for whatever mood Im in, if anything I never have anything bad to say about the instrumentals, if Im doing any artwork, I always listen to Opeth haha
I fell in love with this.
amazing masterpiece
Damn I love this track! Definitely one of my favs, along with Faith in Others
what a piece of art!!! Outstanding musicianship, intense!!!…Loved it!
The last minute of this song is so intense I wish there were more of it, but it's really cool how it sneaks up on you after the rest of the song.

i'm always disappointed when it ends
R I V E R !!! \\mm//
...There comes a time when the river runs dry
Winter comes and we sacrifice ours live ...!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is my favorite modern Opeth song, good shit
Solo in 4:00 is like Juha Björninen solo in a song called "Skön Anna" back in the late 70's Piirpauke sessions
This is juste some fucking good prog, all the songs on this give me goosebumps
Everything this band Did was perfectly Done! Opeth rules!
That solo around 2:30 is magical
Favourite track off the album!
6:20 this sounds like "MAGMA"😱
So beautiful...
My favorite Opeth song and solo 🧡
We love opeth, don't change a thing.
love it. amazing song.
My song favorite
Some splendid blues runs on this one
This song is progressive, the structure much like a River
Makes me want to spin around in circles with my arms wide open and dance, dance, dance
I think this could be the only happy sounding Opeth song
One of the best songs I've ever heard!
Another Opeth favorite. Too many to even try to list.
I love this song!
MASTERPIECE!!!!!!
This is fucking magic
