Two books that are historical nonfiction about Black history but the writing is done so well that you feel engaged the entire time are Wayward Lives, Beautiful Experiments by Saidiya Hartman and All That She Carried by Tiya Miles.
You are not alone in the mood reading.My reading choices changes from minute to minute. I feel like, Shawnaci, our reading brains are so similar! Listening to you talk about “Shark Heart” ( which is on my TBR too) I’m nodding my head because I don’t know if I can suspend my reality that far. Plus, we both love Love and Other Words ( Elliot is mine in my brain)😊

Last Night at Telegraph Club is a super sweet sapphic YA historical fiction that you should totally check out!! 🤭 It has that same romantic tension feeling you were describing and I really enjoyed it

You are not alone. I’m definitely a mood reader. I have 3 library books I got last week. I’ve read 3 chapters of one. My best friend made me blind dates with a book for my birthday. I guessed 3 of the 4 of them. Lol One is a new release I’ve been wanting to read. I just unwrapped it to start reading it before the rest of my library books.

I think you should give a love song for ricki wilde another chance since you are in your historical fiction era … it’s heavy the Black American experience in the Harlem renaissance and there’s romances
The Personal Librarian was a very good book. I'm glad you liked it. Kristin Hannah is an excellent writer if you decide to read any of hers. Beverly Jenkins Blessings Series is also very good, not so much historical, but they do discuss Black history pertaining to their town, family etc. It has mystery, romance, and family drama all the things. Happy Reading 📚 😊

Yay!! Love that you’re branching out ❤️ it’s exciting. I don’t really like “lit fic” books because you have to read in between the lines a lot and sometimes I just want to be told what’s going on. Anyways, I love historical fiction. I HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend The Yellow Wife by Sadeqa Johnson. Such a great beautiful, heart wrenching, continuously paced historical fiction.

I have a great rec for you. While I don’t read to many romances, I do read tons of literary fiction. The Banned Bookshop of Maggie Banks by Shauna Robinson. It is a contemporary fiction with heavy romance themes. Maggie Banks comes in from out of town to work in her friends bookshop that only sells classics. Through a series of events she starts an underground bookstore to save it. It is a really cute story that I think you will enjoy.

If you are reading historical fiction, you must read anything by Beverly Jenkins. I would highly recommend Indigo, Through the Storm, Winds of the Storm, Captured and Rebel
Girl! Your weather is like a fantasy novel to me. It still feels like 100 here. We got 2 weeks of false fall (meaning highs in the 80's) and I am so annoyed. 😒

For Hispanic heritage month: I read Monstrilio by Gerardo Sámano Córdova( a Frankenstein inspired novel) this month, and I sobbed my eyes out. I was processing emotions I didn’t even know I had. Highly recommend for another literary novel that explores grief- I liked that it’s more nuanced & the writing is BEAUTIFUL.
I’ve had “The Personal Librarian” and “Shark Heart” on my bookshelf for awhile now, definitely need to get around to reading them. I read “Crying in H-Mart” three years ago, it was a five star read for me. Also, you are not alone, I may say I’m going to read a certain book but then it gets pushed to the side for another book.

Have you ever read historical romance? I don’t usually read books like that but The Duchess Deal by Tessa Dare was getting all the hype for a while. I decided to read it and really enjoyed it. It was funny and had a lot of banter but had romance too. It is the first in the Girl Meets Duke series.
Also Before We Were Yours by Lisa Wingate, The Kitchen House by Kathleen Grissom and The Stolen Marriage by Diane Chamberlain were all really really good books!!!!!
