Forgot to mention in the video, but I will be donating all ad revenue from this video to the Tilted Axis crowdfunding campaign, between now and when the campaign ends at the end of October. It won't be a huge amount, but every little helps! If you can bear it, please let the ads run for at least 30 seconds, as that increases the amount that's paid out 🙏
Thank you for standing up for kindle. As someone who has recently suffered with their eyesight and suffers with arm pain. Lifting a kindle and also reading at adjusted size text has been a lifesaver for me. Yes there are lots of different e readers, but as a disabled person who finds it difficult to earn income and to visit libraries. Kindle has given me a world of accessibility.
I always love these videos so much! Two things that occurred to me when you were talking about kindle promos: 1) kindle promos tend to be good for authors for exposure, too, and publishers kind of work on the understanding that most ebooks sell on promo far more than at full price. The vast majority of my ebook sales come from kindle promos, and that’s basically the only way to make any break through in the Amazon ebook charts, which have a huge impact on sales. Also, 2) Apple and Kobo usually price match the majority of ebooks when they’re on sale on Amazon, so people can often buy ebooks for 99p from other sites, too, when they’re on promotion at Amazon.
Thanks for addressing the kindle/amazon issue, it’s so complicated to be a conscious consumer these days, its interesting and good to hear ebooks offer good profits for publishers, even with massive discounts :)
I very much enjoy these book news videos. It makes sense that in a cost of living crisis bookstores would be suffering although to many of us books still count as necessities. Here in Australia The Mighty Red by Louise Erdrich is now available so looking forward to that. I don't enjoy Sally Rooney at all so giving her a miss. I also don't enjoy Jonathan Franzen even though I've read probably 3, but I would say that if I had to pick one The Corrections is the one to read.
It’s a shame when great bookshops face these challenges! Easy to take them for granted but does highlight the importance of buying locally when you can.
Had my first visit to a Toppings this week - in Edinburgh - and was lucky enough to go to a book event with Clare Chambers - such an amazing place and yes the event was so well done! 😊
My Kindle purchases always end up being those books I wouldn’t really buy physical copies of, so it’s nice to have a kind of backup library! And yeah books are getting more and more expensive so the discounts are always welcome.
Thanks so much for advising of the sale! I went to buy one book, ended up buying four. I'm not mad about it. I'm also going to donate to Tilted Axis and the Common Press - got to keep fighting the good fight, where possible!
Glad you got in there with the Fitzcarraldos… I have just learned the hard way that the ‘midnight on Monday’ thing was actually at the end of Sunday, so I missed out 😭
always SAT for the bookish news! The Favorite and Sky Full of Elephants sound fantastic. i've got the new Vandermeer on deck as an eARC but i'm on book 2 at the moment. it's been a fun ride! have you done the Southern Reach books?
Thanks for taking a seat!!! 🙌 I have only read Annihilation, but I should really pick the thread back up. I always find series too much of a big commitment though. I’ve got phobias!
Hi Ben, thank you for all of the news you share! I LOVE these videos!!! I believe that Verso was also looking for donations late last month/earlier this month, but I think that they have met their financial needs ( ^ - ^ )
Ahhh it’s such a shame that publishers are facing these financial issues! Glad Verso got through though - hopefully a good proof point that all this fundraising can work.
Ugh. Really like Tilted Axis. Hope they can get the support they need. There are so many great books to read. I’ve got Prophet Song and Bee Sting on my TBR. Currently reading Held.
Not that I know of! These recent sales were reported widely just because they were notable, I think. But if you ever find a source please let me know because I live for nerding out on stats!
I am once again asking people to buy a KOBO instead of a kindle, you get all the same kindle deals and not supporting Amazon. Had mine for 5 years and it's still great. I love it.
A good suggestion! Although one of the challenges is that lots of people already have Kindles. Spending on a new device (and the electronic waste of getting rid of your old one) won’t be the answer for many people. But for those looking to get their first e-reader, definitely worth looking into!
I don't know if you read non-fiction at all, but the Baillie Gifford Prize for Non-fiction is a great one. I've found all listed books I've read really good.
I read non-fic now and again, but not that much really! The Baillie Gifford stuff does tend to be quite interesting, but for my own sanity I focus these videos mostly on fiction 😅
so excited for The Corrections TV adaptation! I loved Crossroads and have been saving The Corrections for a time where I have an extended period to sit and read 📚♥️
So good to see Welsh lit being celebrated!! Thought Neon Roses and Local Fires were both cracking! Like the sound of all these new releases too. Might have to give up work and just read. Who needs food and a roof over your head when you have books right?!
Haven't been very into booktube recently, but your videos are always a treat. Thanks for introducing me to the Yael Inokai book - I'll definitely be picking up the German original :)
Thanks so much - glad you enjoy the videos! And I enjoyed the cadence of the German when Inokai did a reading, even if I didn’t understand it. So I hope you like the book!
Verso are another publisher who put out an appeal for public help recently, their distributor went bust in massive debt to them (like £1m I think?) - they have a small but brilliant fiction arm so I really hope they will get through this!
I ran to my library's website to place a hold on Paula Hawkins' The Blue Hour. They have 46 copies on order and I'm 36th in line, so I'll get to read one that no one else has touched yet, lol. I know that's not literary fiction, but your report of the average lit fic selling less than 500 copies their first year sounds shocking. Unless that's only UK and only physical book sales, or if indie and self published books with no marketing whatsoever are averaged in? Or maybe they don't count pre-orders, which is how libraries place their orders of any upcoming noteworthy titles? Because otherwise wouldn't sales (including audiobook leasing) to libraries alone be more than that? 🤔
That stat was from a UK publisher so might be a UK-only number - not sure. But it is an average, and I reckon there are plenty of published books that don’t even make it into many (if any) libraries. I think there was something from the DOJ investigation into Penguin Random House that basically made it clear publishers make tonnes and tonnes of ‘little bets’ where they don’t expect to make their money back, all in the hopes of finding that 1 in 1000 hit that can pay for everything else.
Adding My Favourite to my tbr, love Indigo press and French translated books. Great video, as always, I really appreciate the effort you put in to this
Excuse me? A German book I have not heard of and have to find out through a booktuber from the UK? Rude. 😂 I immediately seeked it out and I love the German cover. Thanks for bringing it to my attention. I've read Ingenious Pain by Andrew Miller a couple of years ago and was really surprised how much I liked it, considering that I'm usually not really into historical fiction. And The Land in Winter sounds also intriguing. Meryl Streep is a perfect cast for The Corrections. Curious to find out who else will be casted.
If it makes you feel any better, Inokai is Swiss (German-speaking)! 😅 Although she does now live in Berlin. The German cover did look great, if it’s the same one she read from at the event I went to.
I almost quit reading The Corrections at about page 75. I hated it, viscerally hated it. Then my younger brother said he'd just finished Freedom by Franzen and I thought "if he can finish a Franzen book, so can I!" So I continued reading and ended up loving it.
I'm saying this with absolutely zero qualification 😂 but I don't think people are buying Rooney books *instead of* other books. Yes, it would be good to see marketing pushes and media attention for more lit fic but, I don't have much patience for griping that she is 'overrated'. I'm about to read the safekeep and I'm really looking forward to it
You may well be right! Definitely think that’s the case with big name biographies. But I could imagine someone going into a bookshop and picking up the new Rooney novel instead of browsing any further or asking for a recommendation. Guess it depends on people’s book budgets! Hope you enjoy The Safekeep - I thought it was great 😊
That is insane, 500 copies in the first year of release for literary fiction? I both feel guilty and not guilty for not getting to literary books as soon as they are published. Not Rooney though, I just can't make myself imagine she'd be for me.
Forgot to mention in the video, but I will be donating all ad revenue from this video to the Tilted Axis crowdfunding campaign, between now and when the campaign ends at the end of October. It won't be a huge amount, but every little helps!

I don’t know if you’ve seen The Good Place, but the way that plot goes is exactly how I feel about being a modern day consumer 😅
I very much enjoy these book news videos. It makes sense that in a cost of living crisis bookstores would be suffering although to many of us books still count as necessities. Another book award to look out for is the An Post Irish book awards.
Ah yes, there will be some Irish fiction treats in store there! Fingers crossed for The Coast Road.
Had my first visit to a Toppings this week - in Edinburgh - and was lucky enough to go to a book event with Clare Chambers - such an amazing place and yes the event was so well done! 😊
Yay! I'm seeing her in Cambridge soon, and currently reading Shy Creatures - I'm really enjoying it so far.

I agree about kindle deals as can’t afford to pay full price all the time xx

Another great news update. Added a couple to my TBR, picked up some Fitzcarraldos.
Thank you! I’m still debating which Fitzies to go for (although really, I’m not in need of new books right now 😅)
Always love these vids. Some of the new releases are already on Everand so have saved them straight away, thank youhoooo Ben 😊❤
Oooh nice, glad you’ve been able to nab some of them already! Thanks for watching Charlie ♥️

And you’ve got some great reads lined up 😊
Great video, thank you.
I donated to tilted axis (just letting you know because mentioning this kind of thing in your videos does make a difference)
Thank you for letting me know! Really glad to raise awareness of the crowdfunding campaign.
Favorite time of the month!

I love these book news videos! Is there a website that the general public can view book sales stats on any given book?

New Cillian Murphy!! 😍😍😍

Hope you found some decent Kindle bargains ♥️
I am very excited about the Toppings news. A great round up, thanks Ben.
I’m actually going to York soon and was like ‘why can’t it open RIGHT NOW??’ 😂
so excited for The Corrections TV adaptation! I loved Crossroads and have been saving The Corrections for a time where I have an extended period to sit and read 📚♥️
I have had it on my shelf for about a decade so I really need to sort my life out and read it 😂
Juice by Tim Winton and Dusk by Robbie Arnott are being release in Australia, very excited about these two!
Ooh the new Robbie Arnott! I think we’re still waiting for a release date for that one in the UK 😢
