Wow this hit me hard. My dad didn’t want to go to the hospital. He was having a heart attack, ended up intubated. Had to drive him there. Ended up passing a few weeks later. I miss him so badly

8 years? I'm equally horrified and impressed st the dad's stubborn insistence on staying away from hospitals.
My dad dislocated his shoulder in highschool. He’s now 47 and only realized a year ago. He was a professional athlete too! An Olympian and professional goalball player!
Maybe due to the prohibitive medical bills that a trip to the ER can leave you with?

Sometimes people amaze me with their pain tolerance, my family included.
My uncle one time fell in his back yard onto rebar, fully puncturing his abdomen. This batshit crazy man PULLED HIMSELF OFF the rebar and drove HIMSELF to the hospital. Luckily none of his organs were damaged.
A week later my Aunt filed a missing person report since he wasn’t home and wasn’t responding to anyone at all. This man didn’t bother telling anyone, actually hoping he would get away with it. Might I remind you that he was in the hospital for over a week before anyone found out.
My god, he's lucky he didn't bleed out. Please, please, PLEASE if you ever get a stab or puncture wound of any kind and you can leave the object in, LEAVE IT IN. You will BLEED OUT if you don't.
@Terminator First responders and firefighters are trained for this type of thing. They cut you out with the rebar then stabilize and transport you to the ER. If you pull that out and it's hit a major artery, you'll be dead in minutes
I have a step-grandparent, she has a really high pain tolerance, as in one day she noticed she was throwing up, but didn't feel anything, by chance went to the hospital to get checked, the doctors thought it was a flu, but wanted to look in her chest just to make sure, and 30 minutes later, they FLEW down the hall to her room, and said "you have appendicitis and it's already ruptured, we can't do surgery here, we'll get transport." She said "nah, I'm good, I can drive," and the doctors looked at her like she was having a stroke, but gave her the paperwork, so she drove to the main hospital unit, still feeling absolutely nothing. She gets there, and the doctors start triage again, and because she said she had no pain, they're like "yup, she's good," but when she gave them the paperwork they were like "oh fuck, this thing has been ruptured for hours, we need to get this out now," and they practically threw her on the gurney and ran to surgery, to the point that my stepdad, when he came to the hospital just before, he heard someone else be informed that their elective surgery was postponed for an emergency and he just stuck his face down because he was embarrassed. But yeah, she's the only person I've met who did not immediately double over in pain and was able to functionally drive with a fully ruptured appendix.
@@greenpiersystem she shld really get checked for CIP , ( congenital insensitivity to pain.) Ironically it can lead to death, or irreversable damage.

My Dad didn't want to go to the ER with a kidney stone. He started drinking Drambouy to numb the pain. Which did not work so we went to the ED. And guess what? They couldn't give him pain medication because he was too liquored up! 🤣
It’s all good. He’s too drunk to notice. Just put the mask on him and tell him it’s anesthesia.

Today I got to be thankful to all the men and woman who work at my local ER. Woke up writhing in pain, sweating, and unable to get up. Some pain killers and a CT scan later, I'm at home taking oral pain meds trying to pass multiple kidney stones. Worse pain I've ever had is now manageable because of the people who are willing to work that tough job. So to all the nurses, doctors, technicians, ect, I'm very grateful.

Had kidney stone twice. Both time I ended up in the ER . The second time I tried to tough it out at home and wait for it to pass because I knew it would..... But could not keep any kind of painkiller in my system, couldn't even take a sip of water I would throw it up. Went to the ER after 11 hours at home...
While waiting in the ER the pain basically quit...... Just go to the ER as soon as possible otherwise you look like an idiot later on it passes on its own.... And you're in the ER and it doesn't hurt anymore.
If only had some IV painkillers at home. The one they give you a shot of at the ER now is actually a NSAID... Not a narcotic or oxycodone. And it works wonderfully. In 15 minutes you're totally pain-free and feel like a million bucks.
I've always hoarded some oxycodone at home that I didn't use after prescriptions for things just in case I needed them, but if you can't swallow them and keep them down it doesn't do a bit of good

Once, when the Dodgers were playing on Montréal, the pitcher who was supposed to start that day failed to show up for the game. They found him unconscious in his hotel room. It turned out he was passing a kidney stone, and he passed out from the pain.
This happened to my brother. He was walking around with a dislocated shoulder for about 3 years. This was around the time we figured out he also has epilepsy, and was having seizures in his sleep (which is how he dislocated his shoulder). By the time the shoulder was noticed, he needed a surgery to correct it, followed by a bunch of PT.
Jesus, how's he doing now?

Hitting me hard. Dad had a stroke 2 weeks ago and ended up doing the Cincinnati Stroke Test faster than the dispatcher could tell us- he is doing well going to stroke rehab after a few bumps in the road!❤

I recently x-rayed a guys shoulder and since I was trained to take patient history as I go along I asked him what's going on with it, he told me it was the covid vaccine that's causing the shoulder pain. After the first x-ray I knew he was forgetting something, so with a little more digging, he finally remembered an incident where he was driving and saw a kid run out into the street, he slammed on the brakes and he remembered hearing a loud pop. Then he added
"But that can't be the reason my shoulder hurts, that happened years ago." He has been living with a dislocated shoulder for 6 years.
Disability support worker here and once had a client who had dislocated their shoulder falling and didn't even know until years later while having a PT massage for back pain. They said that they never felt the pain in their shoulder and still had good enough amount of movement for their daily tasks. Their Guardian and I were just standing there gobsmacked that they didn't experience pain for a dislocated shoulder and concluded that their chronic back pain masked it.
This kinda breaks my heart reminds me of a memory. In 2019 I was very ill and my parents took care of me. My father was sick too but he refused to go to the hospital. He prioritized my health, his grown ass daughter over his own. My older sister forced him to get check up and he was diagnosed with colon cancer stage 4. In 2020, he lost his battle and passed away. His best friend told me not to blame myself. Dads simply refuse to look "weak" in front of their children. I'm finally healthy now but my dad never gets to see it. Rest in peace my beloved father.
Reason why my family has the "your vote doesn't count when you're sick" rule. My dad was clearly having a bad allergic reaction to a fruit smoothie he got at Costco but he wanted to shower before going to the ER. Face was as purple as the smoothie. Turns out he's allergic to Marionberry, among many other things.
I don't know why this reminded me of this, but my dad took me to the hospital the day after I had emergency surgery to remove my gallbladder because I was throwing up blood. He was being such a prick and talking down towards me to the er staff. He kept saying b.s. like, "I'm sorry we're bothering you. My son has a really low pain tolerance." which isn't even true. I'm a recovering opiate addict so I take methadone. Yes I know it's a pain killer, but for someone who use to use as much as me for over a decade I literally don't feel it unless I don't take it. It also binds so tight to the receptors that the only thing that would bind tighter is Buprenorphine. So other opiates can't get in. I was essentially unable to get pain management. My surgeon warned me it would be bad, and I always knew this was a possibility. I had no other options though. Don't do drugs kids. It's not worth it. Trust me. Well I had a big hole in my duodenum. Probably either from, or exacerbated by the surgery. Dad didn't even apologize to me after I woke up from the new surgery to fix it. Dick. It was insane by the way. I was in so much pain I wanted to kill myself. Then the propofol knocked me out, and the next thing I know I'm waking up relatively painless. Like a new moon night and day. I was also operated on laparoscopicly. We live in miraculous times that's for sure.
Dad's they should get an award for being stubborn in medical checkup
My boyfriend refuses to seek medical treatment when he is sick. It’s really frustrating for me to not have any idea what’s wrong with his health and what signs to look for when I should take him to the hospital. And I find it hard to help someone and listen to them complain when they refuse to help themselves and seek solutions for their problems.
My partner is the same way
Do not move in or marry this person until they get better with this. Trust!
My dad is the same. He was hit by a car and didn't get seen bc he walked away and has had hip pain and other issues since. 15 years later he finally gets looked at. It completely messed up his spine and will have serious problems for a long time.
My dad never wanted to go to the hospital. Once he was so sick his oxygen was in the low 60s high 50s and had to be rushed to the trauma room in the ED. Ironically, the only time he actually went without a fuss was when he has his stroke. His heart ended up being what got him in the end, I miss him so so much.
Mom wants a lab test everytime she feels off. Dad won't even say where it hurts, just says it's not that bad.

My dad too is incredible stubborn about his health issues and its funny to see him lecturing his dad (my granda) about being stubbor OF HIS HEAL ISSUES!

This is too real - my dad suffered gi issues for well over a decade, constantly self-medicating with strong painkillers and staunchly refused to see any doctors or visit a hospital, even when it was so bad that he kept his laptop ontop of the fridge because he couldn’t sit down for prolonged periods. He was constantly in pain, but it got worse and worse over time. Until one day when he was in so much pain he couldn’t get out of bed and had to weakly call out for help from my mum who thankfully took him to the ER. His bowel had ruptured due to a blockage of scar tissue caused & aggravated by his untreated condition and it had caused a nasty infection. The doctors said it he’d waited even a few hours more he would’ve probably died, got him into surgery a couple of hours later and had to remove a whole section of his gut. A stoma-bag, reconnection surgery and 2 years later and his quality of life seems to have improved significantly, he’s happier and less irritable than before.
My family are forever grateful to the nhs here in the uk which meant that when this all happened my mum could focus on what was important and not have to worry about money or insurance. It’s a big problem that men, especially older men don’t feel like they should take their own pain seriously.
Did they ever figure out what the untreated condition was?
@@GrumpyOldFart2 it's even worse when some will agree they probably need to go, but hold off because they can't afford it. My partner's like that, if he can't get it done at the VA he doesn't want to spend the money. He nearly died a few years ago when an abscess became septic. Simple thing, go to urgent care and have it lanced. "I have an appointment at the VA, I'm not spending X on that!" "That appointment is in two MONTHS!" He didn't even want to go to the hospital when he was actively dying! I had to call his Mom and tell on him so SHE would make him go! She wasn't much better either, she had cancer that eventually caused her colon to rupture, which she ALSO ignored for four days until she was feverish and delirious, then she flatlined in the life flight being taken to a more advanced hospital. She was...OK... eventually, from that. She had a heart attack a few weeks later when she was starting chemo, her body just couldn't handle anymore. But doctors are expensive, her initial symptoms (cramping, transient abdominal pain, constant digestive problems) were something she felt she could manage with a heating pad, Imodium, and some antacids. Would her heart have given out if she'd gone about the initial problems and caught the cancer earlier, thus avoiding the trauma from the rupture? Maybe, eventually. But probably not so young.
My Dad waited two days for his cardiologist's appointment to get his difficulty breathing checked out instead of going to the ER (once again, "Too expensive!")...he had a *collapsed* *lung* !
I used to have a serious opiate addiction and would hit up ERs and urgent cares with "back pain" (oh the irony that I now have back issues) for pills, and I would use a fake ID. Not to cover my tracks as far as drugs & doctor shopping, but so I couldn't be billed for it. That was just fucked up on so many multiple levels.
this remind me of my mom and I. my mom became very sick and refused to go to the hospital. one day when she got sicker I had an hour argument with her over going to the hospital. I ended up calling the EMS, they came and she argued with them but they took her anyways. we later found out that she had sepsis.
I know that pain, when I was younger I fought with my mom for 3 weeks to go to the ER, cause I had a UTI that transpired into a 3 week kidney infection...Doctors berated her for not taking me in sooner.
Few years later, SHE ends up with a kidney infection, and doctors AGAIN berate her for not going in. Basically TDLR: They told her she had 3 days before she wouldve fallen asleep and not woken back up. Her organs were failing, and she STILL had the audacity to NOT take the medication they gave her.
If you look at my comment history, my "mom" was a narc who literally REFUSED to believe a damn thing any doctor said, refused to finish ANY medications. And constantly berated me that I was taking "drugs" (antidepressants). Fun times.

Moms can definitely be just as bad. My mother was going through menopause and suddenly developed what she called a "horizontal illness" or something silly where she would be feeling fine, until she had to be anything but horizontal. Getting out of bed made her dizzy and she started taking naps regularly during the day. Luckily, she decided to see a doctor on her own and my older sister was helping her get to bed for a nap one day when the doctor's office called demanding that she come in immediately for a transfusion. She never told us that she had been bleeding for a month solid! Just leaking away her life fluid and her hemoglobin levels were so low that her veins were super constricted and the nurse broke a couple before she finally got the IV in place. Pretty sure if my mom had gone down for that nap, she wouldn't be here today. Please pay attention to how long things go on for!
That's totally me with my muscle and nerve damage after I've seen the physical therapist. I also have arthritis for situs and tendonitis in my shoulder on down. So there's times I end up walking around like a T-Rex or not even able to move

Hey, good job on the kid. Sometimes, people sense something is wrong w/o knowing. Arm weakness is a sign of stokes & heart attacks.
I appreciate the awareness. As someone with residual paralysis from Ramsay-Hunt syndrome (closely related to Bell's Palsy) my response to the request to smile may include language common to this channel.
I got Bell’s palsy once. I totally feel for you.
When I realized my mom was having a stroke, (left side of her mouth was drooping) she didn’t want me to call 911. Her exact words were” your sister can drop me off at the hospital on her way to work “. I ignored her , of course and called 911. 911 Operater asked me to have mom do the same tests shown in video, mom couldn’t raise her left arm at all ( she’d dislocated it a little over 2 months prior & it was still healing) just as I hung up with 911, EMS came rolling up our driveway. She was indeed having a stroke. It’ll be a year later this month. She still has some weakness on her left side and has some memory issues and bouts of confusion, but she still with us. If you think someone is having a stroke, call 911 immediately

My Dad's been dealing with a sore hip for about 2-3 years, just chalked it up to age and his usual joint issues (He is in his 70's after all) But at a hospital appointment for something else they had to X-ray him, turns out he'd been walking around on a broken hip.
This is just too relatable. I grew up around a bunch of old-timers, & still, remember the heated arguments with the kids.

I’ve dislocated my shoulder a few times. Usually I could get it back in within a few seconds. But one time it got stuck out of the socket, and I went to the hospital.
I had to hold my arm in a certain position or else it would hurt like crazy. I can’t imagine living with a dislocated shoulder for any extended amount of time.

A few years ago he got a flu/cold that knocked him out and the day he could get up he went out to the car to get it started to go to work. The car didn't start (old wire issue) so he wanted to turn it around so I could jump it with mine. TLDR he ended up almost fainting and we called an ambulance. (Low blood suger cuz his body had used all the stored when he was sick)
Also the car was in the middle of my street. Bless the EMTs who helped us finish moving it.
I dislocated my shoulder once and I mush have made a divot in the bone. It started dislocating all the time. I finally had surgery. I had heard horror stories that people can move their arm after the surgery. So i did everything the Dr said. I am a true believer in physical therapy. My shoulder was hurting so i wasn't going to fo. I told the therapist that
I left with so much relief. This Dr says that my shoulder is one of the best out comes he's ever had. Listen to the Dr orders. They some time work!

my dad is the same way, he has a deviated septum and most likely has sleep apnea as a result. I often stay up later than him and can hear him snore. pause mid snore and stop breathing, and then violently snort a few seconds later and go back to snoring. It’s quite concerning but “he’s fine” :(
I can’t exactly make him go to the hospital or anything and it’s not likely life threatening but he’s always tired, and I wish he would just try to take care of himself, if only to feel what it’s like to be healthy.
Although thankfully, it normally isn't immediately life threatening, as the brain wakes someone up when it senses the lack of oxygen, I would definitely continue to encourage him to get help, as untreated sleep apnea can actually be more dangerous over time, as it "disrupts normal heart and lung function, raises blood pressure, and causes imbalances in the brain and body chemistry". At the very least, if he's sleeping on his back, suggest he sleep on his side, as that can help keep the airway open a bit better.
I'm sorry he's being so stubborn, and I hope you can get him to listen to reason. I know how frustrating and concerning it is when loved ones refuse to take care of themselves. :(
No, sleep apnea is life-threatening. He needs a sleep study to determine what kind of apnea and its severity and to get a CPAP machine that regulates his breathing in his sleep. Sleep apnea causes a cascade of cardiovascular, pulmonary, and neurological issues down the line, where it increases your risk of a cardiovascular event.
My ex SO did that too, stopping breathing multiple times a night. When he nodded off... driving down the highway.... Luckily I yelled and shook him! Finally he agreed to get the sleep apnea test saying 'and when they tell you there is nothing wrong I don't want to hear another fkn word!'
The sleep clinic rang the morning after the tests and told him to come in IMMEDIATELY for a cPAP (?) Machine since he was stopping breathing so often!

My dads exactly the same 😂🤦🏻♀️ won't go to hospital for anything even tho he's constantly breaking his hands. His shoulder will visually dislocate randomly and he'll just pop it back into place like its nothing. His knees are fuckef and constantly buckling underneath him and he can barely move his back. But will always refuse to get it checked 🤦🏻♀️

With joints dislocating and buckling so easily like that I'd be worried that he has Ehlers Danlo's Syndrome, a connective tissue disorder. It's rare but it's something that should be checked out and ruled out.

My dad didn't want to go to the hospital, but when he finally did, they found that his oxygen levels were super low. They intubated him, but he died a week later.

Like my Dad only when I dragged him to the ER the admitted him because he was having a stroke. He's okay now, but I'm glad I was able to get him to listen to me. Finally.

@@chrisbecker4412 He could have just dislocated it to many times in the past. The more it gets dislocated the easier it is to dislocate in the future.
@@chrisbecker4412 yupp, he has EDS 😅 He dislocates and subluxates most of his joints on a daily basis, most of them don't even hurt to pop back anymore 😳

My great aunt was like this. She had multiple different cancers, prone to pneumonia and almost always had severe dehydration. I was very successful getting her help cuz I would let myself break down down and sob laying on guilt of her not caring . It worked and she got the help she needed. I really miss her.

My dad to this day is walking around with a broken back. Which I didn't even know was possible but aparently it is. It's been that way for years and he works as a builder and he refuses to get it fixed.
That was me the moment I realised I could walk on my ankle again. 2 weeks after breaking it I was told I could start walking on it without the walking boot. I was amazed and of course I was running around. Update- its been 3 months since that day and my ankle keeps deciding to be a pain 😅

Almost this exact thing happened to my dad a few months ago. He'd been complaining of shoulder pain and we finally talked him into going to the hospital - it turns out it was dislocated, and had been that way for well over a year! (He'd been hiding it from us and downplaying it as "just getting old")
My Dad in 2015. Thank God for my little brother and the PHS hospital staff, they saved his life. He denied his heart attack up until he was loaded in the medi chopper to a better equipped facility 200 miles away. My Dad's going to be 80 in a couple of months.
That was my dad. He got kicked in the shoulder by a horse. He came home and took a nap till my mom got home. She was so mad. She took him to the hospital and yelled at him the whole way there and back. Yea

I saved my dad’s life by forcing him to go to the ER. It was the middle of the night and I told him he had five minutes to get in the car before I started honking the horn and disturbing the neighbors. I’d never spoken to him like that before but I was desperate - and mad - and it worked. That time, they were able to save his foot. The next time, he was septic and they saved his life. Now he listens when I tell him to go to the ER.
My dad didn't want to go to the hospital when he fell over while playing tag with us. He finally went like years and years later and his leg was broken the whole time, now he's in constant leg pain and has to have really painful injections in his legs because the broken bones caused major damaged rubbing up the inside of his legs all those years
Literally almost had this exactly. Except instead of 8 years it was 4 and instead of a ladder it was a box of books I had stupidly tried to pull from the side. Had a ton of pain for those years before a friend from my CMA class relocated it for me. It's been fine ever since.
The doctors reaction kinda reminded me of how my gp reacted when I showed her that I could partially dislocate my shoulder at will lol

I went for three years with a shoulder issue. Started with injections….moved on to mild pain killers, moved to oxycodone, then upwards from there. Finally couldn’t take it anymore. Nothing my dr did or prescribed helped anymore. I have the kindest, sweetest, orthopedic surgeon that ever lived…he finally said he couldn’t prescribe anymore, we’d have to fix it. One rotator cuff surgery later, and I’m here to tell you that it was a worse recovery than actually giving natural childbirth, I had the shoulder of a 25 year old. At 66, I still do. Unfortunately, it’s almost time to get the other one done.. I think I’ll tend to my osteoarthritic knee first, though.
My sister and I both have Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (despite not being actually genetically related - I guess us zebras just have a knack for finding each other!), and this is unfortunately part for the course for us... including the part where we sometimes don't realize - or even _notice_ - that we've dislocated something until quite a bit later (although *_eight years_* has to be some kind of record!). My sister's a mechanic and once dislocated two different parts on one hand/arm from lifting/moving a tire. She didn't notice until an hour later when a co-worker pointed it out (unlike me, she also doesn't always feel pain quite right. Like it's on a delay, or being muted by something). She finally took my advice after that incident and talked with her doctor. There's certain things she's just going to have to not do anymore, or only do with help, but she's still one of the most knowledgeable and skilled people I know in the industry. Plus she doesn't charge for the work if a person is on welfare or disability. She's a good gal.

Sounds like my grandpa. Also had a stroke, had to call 911 to drive him to the hospital, yelled at the doctors to let him go home, signed necessary paperwork, went home, passed away couple weeks later :(

With my anxiety I never know if I need to see a doctor or I just need to calm down and change my lifestyle habits. I’ve gotten quite a few “are you serious” looks from both ends

My dad is the same way. He got a lung infection, so we started talking about how my mom died (she had pneumonia and didn't go to the hospital). It guilt tripped him into going and getting treated for it.

Between my sister and I we fortunately can get our almost 80 year old parents to listen one way or another. Sis is a retired corrections officer that even the warden would say "Yes ma'am" to in a respectful way. As for me, I don't have quite as much finesse. I just put my foot down, and say we're going.
You should do a skit about my experience: cat jumped on my testicle and I had testicular torsion, took a week of me crying before my dad went in who thought it was funny I was walking weird. Turns out I got there just in time to save it. Listen to your kids, yo.
A testicle only lasts roughly 6-12 hours during a tortion. One week and you'd only have one ball my man.
@@CeIIHunter I mean he could in theory still have the testicle but his ability to procreate could just be lessened. Depends on the severity of torsion
@@EdieDawnJay yeah but it'd be rotting. I guess if it was a partial tortion it's possible but partial is usually only a short period before it either untwists or fully torsions .

My dad is the same lmao.
But he once had a heart attack and woke up my mom in the middle of the night to drive him to the hospital. Had a gut feeling telling him to go to the hospital immediately even though he hated public places, especially hospitals (and schools). Even though he was experiencing a heart attack, he didn’t know it was a heart attack, just felt some rough tightness in his chest, his arm was numb and he had difficulty breathing. He waited at the ER like a normal patient WHILE HAVING A HEART ATTACK. Once the doctors checked him, they legit started panicking. No one knew he was having a heart attack, but he said the moment they realized it shit went insane. It was like all silent and calm one minute and then there were doctors and nurses everywhere.

My dad also puts off the Dr./hospital. In fact we almost lost him 6yrs ago when he waited a whole damn day, w severe side pain, to let my mom drive him to ER only to be rushed into emergency surgery b4 his appendix burst. This was after a yr. B4 he put off going to ER for 6mos. despite chronic fatigue bc turns out had limes disease. Inbtwn. these 2 ailments the limes disease tests, scans, etc, explained he was pingeon toed; it was bc he was born w/o cartilegde in his left hip, so that was 1 surgery. Then both knees replaced at once once recouped from hip surgery. Finally after appendix out, about a yr. l8r was diagnosed w diabetes. Yet my dad the trooper robot has come thru it all at 67, finally semi retired, still playing beach & indoor 🏐 3x's a wk. Im now 42 and sadly he can run circles around me....altho I'm a struggling alcoholic.
I feel this. My doctor was pretty upset when we did X-rays, and there were several “new” compression fractures.
And when asked about it, I couldn’t remember exactly when each happened, as “it was more annoying to go to the ER at the time. And I just forgot to bring it up.”
Back in the days when my GP had time I remember him telling me I had a 'new' broken rib. As a landscaper there was always something hurting, but the look on his face was priceless. On the other hand, when I tore the cartilage off said ribs, it was hideous.
True - osteoporosis and osteoarthritis here - 4 bad bulging discs and a couple of lovely big Schmorls nodes where the discs blew into the endplates... My GP could not believe the size of the bulging discs and wondered how I am still walking (especially the lumbar ones!) lol
My favorite boss kept having headaches, vision problems, gait and hand writing issues. He got to the point where he was walking into the machines at work and unable to even open his eyes. I pestered him for months to go get help. It was too late when he did and had stage 4 GBM. Died 5 months after he was diagnosed.
