I know this probably isn’t the correct video to comment on Matt, but just want to say I’ve been rocking out some stellar dovetails and half blind dovetails thanks to your methods. You’re a great teacher and I’m very appreciative to have your online content.

Outstanding series so far. So glad I happened on your link by accident. I have always been looking for ways to improve. Even though I have been working wood for over fifty years (amateur only) I am still learning and you've already shown me a number of ways to do things better. Chisel work has always been difficult to master. Keep the lessons coming, please.

I tried drilling out most of the mortise then fix it up with bench chisles, and I didn't like it at all. The bits left between 2 drilled holes gave me more challenge than chopping the mortise completely with chisels. If you have the space and budget for a hollow chisel mortiser, it's a very effective tool. If not, a rounter with a jig can give you much cleaner walls than drilling. You only need to fix the round corners, or round over the corners on tenon. Hand tools only, I'd prefer chopping only, no drilling.

Perfect! I'm just starting a project that will have 5 mortise and tenon joints and I recently got a mortise chisel like the one you're using in this video. How fortuitous. I tried your method on some scrap and it cuts very nicely. Thank you, glad I'm a subscriber.

The Narex mortise chisels you link to have a trapezoid cross section and do not have parallel sides. This is supposed to be an advantage but I would prefer the parallel sided ones. Do you have any suggestions for uk workers?

What if the wood is 5 or 6 inch in depth, will it work with your style??

Can't believe it never occurred to me to put tape on the chisel... I do it with drills all the time.
