- In this video, I do an unboxing of a rare (in the UK) variety of citrus, the Moro blood orange tree which is well-known for its deep red flesh and raspberry-like flavour. I also managed to taste the fruit several months ago and it was my favourite out of all the ones I compared.

Thanks, Josh! Yeah, it was a great-tasting fruit when I got to try it earlier in the year, so I knew I had to get one as soon as it came up for sale again; these are also really hard to find over here. I know you have been growing yours for quite a while now.
@@PeterEntwistle yessir, my first and oldest citrus! It will be 14 years with me next March. The fruit quality continues to improve.
28F this morning when I got up, so I'm sure glad I pulled all the citrus into the greenhouse yesterday afternoon.
Yeah, I also managed to get all mine into the greenhouse yesterday. A very similar low here last night too.

I have been wishing I have space for a Moro for a while now. They really sound like the best Blood Oranges on all the videos I've watched! Congratulations on getting that gorgeous tree.
Thanks, Dani! Yeah after I did that taste comparison with 4 different varieties of blood orange, I knew I had to get the Moro, it was so delicious! Although I've heard some people don't like the berry flavour all that much, but for me, it makes it so much more interesting! I hope you are able to get one eventually 🤞
@@PeterEntwistle yes, I love the sound of the raspberry flavour you said it had and the fruits do seem to have the deepest colour of red, verging on purple, from what I've seen. So gorgeous!

Thanks! Yeah, I was really excited when I got an email alert to say it was back in stock again. I've been after this variety of Blood Orange for quite a while and the tasting I did of it earlier in the year made me want to get it even more!
@PeterEntwistle I am thinking on adding one more. This year we had 2 blood orange but hopefully next year we get more harvest.

@@PeterEntwistle It's a very nice specimen too. .. I know they're not cheap but they;re still very rare in the U.K so well worth it IMO.

@@PeterEntwistle My one suffered some die-back along quite a few thick branches after I repotted it ..... Maybe the roots were shocked? or maybe there weren't enough roots to take up the available nutrients.
I was VERY worried considering the cost of the plant ... Thankfully the plant stabilised and I haven't seen anymore dieback. I'm hoping next year the canopy will begin to fill out again.
@@MoebiusUK Oh no, that's a pain! Yeah, it could have been some transplant shock. A couple of the citrus I bare-rooted and re-potted this year dropped all their leaves and didn't look very happy for a while. Hopefully, yours come back well next year 🤞

@@PeterEntwistle I recorded minus 5 C with my IR thermometer. The forecast temperature was minus 1 C.
All of my plants are protected in one way or another. Many come inside the house overnight. The ones that ar simply too large and heavy to lug into my home, such as my tamarillos, are under the heavy duty large tarp, with 300W aquarium heater in a 110 litre plastic storage box filled up with water.
It was sunny throughout the day, and once the frost had melted and temperatures rose to above freezing I put my citrus outdoors to get a few hours of full sun. I also partially rolled back the tarp to allow the tamarillos and other plants get some sun. A few hours of full sunlight (albeit weak sun at this time of year) are better than having them in ther house during the daytime.
Wow, the temperatures dropped quickly this evening! By 4pm it was already down to freezing!
@@garycard1456 Yeah, it dropped to 0°C very quickly here this evening. In some shadier areas of my garden, the frost didn't even melt at all today! Lots more freezing temperatures over the next 10 days. Then again I actually prefer this to the really strong damaging winds we kept having before. As long as it doesn't drop as much as it did last December 🤞

That was super brave to be buying a citrus in Winter but sometimes its hard to resist 😁.

Haha thanks, Brett, yeah it will be my 30th in December just before Christmas. To be honest, I just used that as an excuse to get it, but I would have ended up getting it anyway lol 😂. Yeah, I would have preferred to get it after winter, but they never have them in stock for long.

Thanks, Mike! Yeah me too, I've only had the Owari and this Moro so far, but the quality of them has been brilliant. There are a few others that I have been eying up and I'm sure in time when they get them in again I won't be able to resist lol 😂
How are your trees doing?
Yeah, most of them are doing pretty well. Plenty of flowers and new growth on most of my citrus at the moment. The Moro Blood Orange hasn't flowered yet though.
Hi Peter. I forgot to ask you about the rootstock of your moro blood orange?
I'm not sure actually, I forgot to check with the citrus centre. I think they normally use trifoliate rootstock for most of their plants, but it's worth asking them. Some types of citrus are incompatible with trifoliate rootstocks (like the Eureka lemon).
Where did you bought it from mate?
Hey, I got it from the citrus centre. Not cheap though, but I don't think anyone else sells them in the UK at the moment.
