Im in my earlt 20's and I have severe PTSD. I need to have background noise at night while I sleep. I listen to these all night and I swear I'm absorbing information in my sleep.
Over the past few months my financial health has improving without even trying. My husband and I are officially debt free, contributing to our childrens RESP, and are building a great emergency fund. To most that's not much but to someome in their early 20's in 2023, I feel great about where we are financially.
The richest guy i know drives a super cleab toyota corolla but his house is really nice, not too big, not too small and in a really quiet neighborhood. His life is great. He doesnt have to prove anything to anyone. Hes loaded.

Nope, I've used my cashback rewards CC since age 18 for necessities without ever paying a single cent in interest and I've never held any debt despite 7 years of college and having 3 cars. You just need to be disciplined. It's not hard, and that's coming from a kid from Baltimore that grew up dirt poor and has been homeless twice from a broken home. There is nothing holding anyone back aside from issues that are within their own control.
You may be the exception, certainly not the rule.
@@LadyMatriarch. perhaps but the fact remains. Anyone can do it and discipline always has been the key factor. And these days there is no excuse to claim financial illiteracy or ignorance because all the resources everyone needs (and way more) are freely available to anyone who isn't too lazy to take a few minutes of initiative to search and learn.
@@BlakeC341 yes.but just because you've been able to keep a snake as a pet without being bitten..doesn't mean it's wise to have a snake as a pet.
What all you said isn't wrong ..plain and simple, but if you're that well disciplined.. you'd could have already been pu.pinf a Roth IRA and other retirement avenues that will WAAAAY outrace the stupid airline points
@@motoryzen snakes bite way less than dogs though, people still keep them as pets. And a snake bite won't hurt you unless the snake is venomous, and you can't keep one of those without an expensive permit, and a scientific background.
I guess what I'm saying is that it's not about the danger, it's about your wisdom and discipline like the other guy said.

Good shout on the credit card user poll. I like that you engage on this topic even though its contentious for you guys.
I can tell you why I wont get rid of mine.
Because I’m responsible and can use the card responsibly.
I use a budget
I have emergency funds
I don’t carry a balance
We’re not talking about building wealth here its about getting something back.
I spend £13k on my debit card and I’ll get nothing back from the bank.
I spend the same on my credit card and every year I’ll get a weeks groceries or a couple of weeks worth of fuel etc.
Things I wouldn’t have using debit.
There are millions of folks who cant use credit cards. They carry balances, max the cards out and do really dumb stuff with them.
Ive been that guy, I’ve done the stupid stuff and I’ve eventually got out of revolving credit card debt.
Lessons learned.
Could I survive without a credit card, absolutley, no problem at all.
But why should I when I’m better off using them? I shouldn’t feel the pressure to get rid of my card because others cant use them.
Very cool, but here is the main reason. You spend 35% more when using a credit card instead of debt or cash. Doesn’t matter how good your budget is you just do because you don’t feel the pain of spending your own money. You justify all purchases with oh I’ll get some money back and I get more points. You can keep trying to justify to yourself, but you ARE spending more just to get back some overpaid chump change.
@@Nursemidratz nope, I’m pretty stringent and don’t overspend on things like groceries etc or anything that would come out of a debit card.
As for the “hurt” (its actually the opposite, spending releases dopamine) thats apparently caused by paying cash I offer this.
Try watching your bank balance deplete day after day and that figure going down because you are paying the credit card daily and not carrying a balance.
Watching that is just as painful
@@Nursemidratz respectfully disagree. I don't spend more on my vacation rental house or rental car simply because I put it on a credit card. My Google fiber bill is the same whether I pay by cc or auto draft from checking. I write out a grocery list, estimate the costs and delete an excess from my weekly budget...the mode of payment doesn't change what I spend. But then, again, I'm disciplined.

Don't expect to get everything perfectly, just know that you are doing your best and that this baby girl is a gift from God to you and your wife. 30:38 : totally agree with Ken with being debt free and financially independent, for me I'll never retire, I'll always be helping someone and working--being debt free and financially independent is peace and so is being productive and helping others--just imo🥳

Can’t even fathom signing the contract for an $800 car payment. That’s just nuts!
$800 from 25-65 turns into $8 million. This is what we leaves people penniless in retirement with only "Social Insecurity" as their income.
It depends on your income. If I made $1600 a week, a car payment of $800 is very cheap compared to income.
@@jacobssonja $800/month is not "very cheap" on a $1,600/week income. $800 a month invested from 25-65 turns into $8 million. That's a lot for someone making $83k. I'd rather have the $8 million later.
@@Andrew-3445 My goal is not to be a millionaire. I am a realist. I bring home $1,000 a week, mortgage $800 a month, car note $400 a month. Plenty left over for the month even after contributing to 401k and IRA accounts.
@@jacobssonja My plan is $1,500/month invested outside of my 401k. Maxed out 401K, maxed out Roth IRA, and big brokerage accounts. My parents are in their 70s and still don't have two nickels to rub together because they only lived day by day. That was why we lost the house after freezing in it (we had no money for heat), and I had to steal groceries as a teenager just to keep us from starving.
I grew up in TX in the 70s-80s-no AC, no ceiling fans, no box fans, no fans, opened the window at night with -0-breeze, and it did not cool off cooler than 90s at night-horrible. I lived to tell about it, horrible, yes, during the day go the library or work AC, then later on grew up, my top priority was AC. Many times, if you charge a new HVAC system, they charge another 3% fee. We grew up with -0- credit cards in the 80s and younger, if you did not have the money you did without, debt was avail. on house and cars at 10% or higher, one time 0% on cars, but you used a car for 30 years and you pd. house off in 3 bc interest was so high. Mom and Dad each as long as I can remember had 3 jobs each-1 main one and 2 side jobs, both had bachelor's and master's degrees already done years earlier while doing this.Meaning they had higher education and worked 6 days per wk., Sunday was church and had 3 jobs each and some were driving school bus, cleaning houses, cleaning cattle/horse cell barn where they have sales-nasty, hot sweaty job did this one also myself while in college keeps you motivated bc you never want to that again, and the list of side jobs goes on, mom did tennis lessons, etc., and had a house with AC, but never allowed to use it. I get it the bill would have been $200 mn., we have no cell phones they did not exist, had no cable TV it did exist we just did not buy it. I can remember 1 new pair of shoes year, and 3 new short sets new from store 1 time bc I was overweight, way back when 70s and 80s and earlier you had hand me downs, or donations from local women in the church traded kid clothing-so no goodwill or Salvation Army. I get it, I had AC go out twice in car 1 car I drove for a season and then realized I had AC coverage on the warranty-oh well. I was not going to buy until we had the cash to pay for the new install.

So I'm with Samaritan ministries and I really liked it they help you as Christians to care for the needs of the Saints owe any money you send in go straight to another Christian in crisis and they cover natural things like chiropractor supplements and even homebirth midwives. Do you have a program that does all that?
If you have enough initiative to call the place you’re paying and setup a payment plan, you have enough initiative to make a plan to pay your credit cards before interest is due. People are lazy, simply put. That’s why they put things on credit cards. 18:48

I have found roommates and churches on Facebook groups with roommates I would do an interview just like a job interview and ask a lot of questions and I ended up with a great roommate once

To the last caller who's retiring, please get a different financial advisor. Get one that Dave Ramsey recommends. I say that because yours probably said two things. Did sheyou can deduct the interest on your income taxes if you don't pay off the house and did she say that you probably want to be more conservative because of your age? That's bad advice. Have fun in Paris and celebrate with a glass of wine at the Eiffel Tower!

Exactly right. When people want advice, one on one is the best. I can't see people wanting two people talking to them at the same time like mom and dad taking turns lecturing their kid.

Recently got 35k worth of hospital bills cause of a suicide attempt might have to file bankruptcy at 19 but welcome to finances.

I took on a roommate to lower my bills. BIG MISTAKE! it was cool for ab 3 months then she stopped working and paying. Complete hassle to try n get her out of my house. I wish i was physically able to work another job but im not. DEFINITELY think twice b 4 getting a roommate!!! Ill NEVER do it again.
That’s a bummer. I have a rental property and had an eviction I had to do a few years back. I’ve been more diligent about doing background checks and taking my time to see if they are a good fit…it’s worked! Hope this helps if you consider looking again.

I’m stuck too! Every month I set up my Every Dollar budget with a big chunk allotted for savings and POOF! I chip away at that amount until it’s almost gone. Now, thankfully we have the money to handle the non-stop surprises! Two kids in college, four vehicles to maintain, medical bills, things breaking around the house. One of these months it’s got to be smooth! Good luck to you. 🍀

He watched a video on UA-cam that said he could make over $100k/year. Very enticing but unrealistic.
I did the print-on-demand thing for over a year and hardly made anyting. But I didn't have a lot of money for advertising and I didn't follow trends to find out what people wanted to buy I was creating things out of my own imagination and it just didn't take off

Domestic cleaning and Window cleaning are a good side hustle too. My husband and I are window cleaners. you can clear 90 an hr in australia easy. one of our customers manages a cafe and then works cleaning houses on the side. her side now makes her 2 times the amount her manager job does for half the hrs

Great show thanks. I live in Canada and I don't have a credit card, but... I did let my wife apply for one recently. My main gripe has been parking and hotels. Parking especially has been annoying as the machines we have here require a credit card and nothing else. Hotels also have made it clear they are not comfortable with anything else than a credit card on file, but the parking machines have been my kryptonite. My wife is pro-credit card and we often have discussions about it which have been fun and sometimes a little spicy! I have listened to you guys for a long time but have never heard this issue addressed, any suggestions? (My visa/debit card doesn't work for these machines)

It sounds like you don't really have a choice. If that's all you use it for, I don't think it's a bad thing. But just don't go wild on the room service lol
I dunno if they are available in Canada, but a prepaid credit card (e.g., from Walmart or a drugstore kiosk) might be an option for those parking garages. You just load it with however much cash you want to fill it with.
@14 minutes Ken talking about calling an HVAC company and having a conversation. That's a joke. Their in business to make money not hold hands. They'll either tell you to kick rocks or put you in debt on their own terms
