What Does This Ghost Song Remind You Of?

- I don't usually do this, in fact I don't think I have ever reacted to a band or artist more than once but I'm sure it was inevitable at this point. Today, I'm listening to Ghost's new song "Spillways". As you know, I initially didn't think much of Ghost but the last song I reacted to made me change my mind. This song is completely different, so let's have a listen together. What do you think of it? Tell me in the comments.

Every time I hear the beginning of this song I just want to start singing "I WANNA BE THE VERY BEST, LIKE NO ONE EVER WAS"
No one's ever gonna get yiu down!
TO CATCH THRM IS MY REAL TEST....TO TRAIN THEM IS MY CAAAAAAUUUUUSSSSEEEE
@@rockfan243I will travel across the land.... searching far and wide!!!
Even the last notes of the guitar solo goes "POKEMON!!!!" lol
I think people are finally starting to "get" Ghost. They're kind of campy, silly fun. I think people always expected them to be some super-serious metal band and saw them as failing to live up to that and they're just not. They're like a Hammer Horror version of Abba crossed with Bon Jovi. I suspect Justin gets it because if anyone understands campy rock fun, it's him.
Exactly. They’re fun, pretty obvious when you see them live, they’re not meant to be anything other than as described above
I always related them to the Hammer horror movies
They seem to pair naturally with The Darkness. Hence the feature, I suppose lol
But..but..but...they worship satan, right?!😈
I've always enjoyed the metal bands that embraced the campiness and theatrics, like Maiden and Mercyful Fate, I just find that there is commonly a manliness competition in metal and I find it boring
I feel like this song perfectly embodies when people call Ghost "Satanic ABBA". I'm all for it and this song is such a good one!
They've completely embraced it -- between their cover of I'm A Marionette, a brief musical salute to Mama Mia! in Hunter's Moon, and using the same piano from Money Money Money for the intro to Spillways, it's a badge of pride now. 😆
how would that make them different from the original ABBA
You wanna hear an occult Abba check out CHURCH OF THE COSMIC SKULL (UK)...!!
I started calling them 'Abba Metal' since hunters moon came out 😆
Ghost are essentially "Spooky ABBA"
i love them. Square Hammers chorus is glorious
Yeah I think similar rock abba 😂
Are you on the level?
One of the best songs I’ve heard in a long time. Danse Macabre is another one that’s just spectacular.
Square Hammer almost has the same riff as Spillways if you listen out for it
Spillways gothic toto
Spillways is like a modern version of Toto's Hold The Line mixed with Bon Jovi's Runaway. And it's great!
You nailed it.
ABBA’s Money Money Money. It was recorded on the same piano in the same studio.
And Alice Cooper's Poison.
Amazing answer
Sung by Alice Cooper.
The Darkness should tour with Ghost. That would be a fun concert.
And call it Ghost and the Darkness (which is an awesome movie btw!)
Big Yes 💜💜💜
I'd buy a ticket in a heartbeat
But The Darkness would be opening band for Ghost.
At 42 I have never been obsessed with a band as much as I have Ghost, the music, the thing, live shows and lore, just amazing
I recently discovered them properly, and I feel you. They’re honestly such a blessing to this world.
Same here, makes me wonder if I am sane at all? My friends and family think I lost it but it just brings me so much joy and the sound is giving me ear orgasms.
@@mariki3 Don’t give two thoughts about what anyone else thinks. Do what you love, as long as you’re not hurting anyone.
47 and I'm l9vin it!
I'm 47 and I just discovered them last night on The Charasmatic Voice. I was instantly obsessed. Then I heard Danse Macabre. Holy hell. I am just beginning to barely scratch the surface on the mythology. I love how they kept it Kayfabe for so long.
Respite in the Spitalfields is a masterpiece. The perfect song. I hope in a crossover collaboration between Ghost and The Darkness. Papa + Justin what a hellish combo on-stage 🤘😈🤘
Or Ghost and The Darkness (isn't there a film with that title?) But yeah - I think there are enough similarities musically that it would be an awesome collab.
A masterpiece, a musical work.
I would love to see papa and Justin on the same stage!!
Love that song too, even the Whitesnake bit haha
@@BubbaGTi and the alice cooper bit
Ghost has always reminded me of a more modern-sounding Blue Oyster Cult 🤷♂️
Yes!
YES - Couldn't quite place their 'sound' - Maybe they should cover Don't Fear The Reaper, or Godzilla?!
@@theliesisire7485 probably . But I also think Tobias si saving it for the very end...
Ask yourself, ooh
Are you righteous?
I want them to cover dancing in the ruins
Opeth's Freddie plays all the guitars on the record. Did a brilliant job., extremely talented player.
Fredrik* amazing guitarist btw
Cool I didn’t know that
It’s crazy because I feel like he was still held back hard. Tobias still wrote most of the guitar parts and controlled the sound. Frederik could easily rip far better solos than the ones played on the album it’s a shame Tobias didn’t let him
@@Hydra_Mannthat was the original plan but there are interviews out there where he talks about how he ended up tracking all the guitars because of how of a much more accomplished player he is, Freddie even did an interview discussion about all the different guitars he used in the process...
@@Childofbhaal Yeah I mean, Fredrik could've done something much better, but thinking about the style of the songs, you have to do something that works with it, and with the style of Ghost in general, i think they really pull it off
fifth studio album. to me, the best one.the most complete. respite in the spitalfields is superb
Respect, but Meliora is probably always going to be #1 to me
Yeah for me they just keep getting better. Prequelle was my favourite but the new one has now overtaken it.
That song is one of the most beautiful pieces of music I've heard. And powerful.
I'd say Meliora is more complete from a thematic and narrative point of view, but other than that I agree!
Respite in the spitlefeilds was the best track...prequlle was better overall..
I went and saw them at the o2 in london during their tour and it was fucking phenomenal, the personality of Papa, all the ghouls, the visuals, it was all fantastic. At the end when they played enter sandman, dance macabre, kiss the go goat and square hammer literally everyone stood up and it was one giant dance party, i’ll never forget it.
Isnt it interesting how masked musicians have even more personality than "normal" musicians? did you ever see the first set of ghouls they had, omega had about ten times more personality than 90% of unmasked people on stage :D
I cannot wait to attend my first ritual next month. I’m obsessed with papa 😍
"On the street where you live girls talk about their social lives..."
That intro is straight up Runaway by Bon Jovi.
Was looking for this comment! Sounded exactly like it. haha
That's it!
Spillways…Runaway… did Ghost hide a hint in plain sight?
There is nothing fresh about ghost
@@ryankibler7973 that's why they're called Ghost:
A soul that lived in the past, but failed to move on after it died XD
I think this should be Album of the Year! Commercial? Yes. Successful? Also Yes. It's pure 70s and 80s. Cashing in on that nostalgia.
Nostalgia ain't what it used to be.
Agree with you
Ghost is something else. 🖤 I dig everything they've done and they are sublime live. I love the Ritual. 🤘🏻
Dude! I would love to see your take on "twenties" off the same album. Its such a radically different song, musically speaking, that i think youd have a lot of fun breaking it down.
Recently got into Ghost and I'm addicted!! So many good tracks with such good hooks.
At the age of 16, The Darkness compelled me to buy a guitar. 17 years later, (about 3 weeks ago), this channel convinced me to pick it up again. I’m utterly fascinated by how intuitively you play and pick up everything in an instant by ear. Your videos are incredibly motivational, thank you for inspiring me to get back into something that I have a new-found love and passion for. 🥰
P.s The absence of clothing is also appreciated 😜
Indeed! Justin is really interesting to listen to . His musical knowledge and skill is clear!
I really hadn’t noticed he was only wearing a towel 😉
Beautifully said
Nin rides again!
The opening sounds almost identical to Bon Jovi's "Runaway".
Spillways rules, and Griftwood may be the best song of 2022. Ghost's new stuff reminds me of Blue Oyster Cult.
When I first heard this song I immediately heard “Runaway” from Jovi 🤣🤣 Tobias is a monster songwriter for sure! Combining elements of Satanism, campy humor, theater, with metal and pop music…genius!!!
Love this tune. Huge Ghost fan. Thanks for covering this.
I only recently found Ghost from the buzz going around about their new album and I am hooked. It's the first time in years I've heard something new that I like.
Same. Crazy. I never thought I'd have that feeling again.
I love this! Thank you for covering them again and I hope you can react to Twenties by them next! That song comes out of left field and you don't even see it coming! Please?!
Poison was one of the first songs that sprung to mind when i heard this, what i like about this band that really infuriates me i can hear so many different bands in thier songs that i spend more time thinking where have i had this or that from. Brilliant band
I thought it was a perfect pop-metal song, honestly.
Me too.
After your first review of Ghost I have now become somewhat of a fan. Thanks for the introduction to their music. They are very creative and love how the image is very tongue and cheek. Loving the channel Justin and your musical insight and introduction to music I wouldn't normally have even listened to before.
THANK YOU ! The chorus with the 4 magic chords repeated in different keys, when I first heard it, all I could think about was POISOOOON lmao
Really pleased you've reviewed this. Impera is amazing.
It is their 5th album and I would say one of the best, it is so well put together!!!!
Ghost is such a treat. They're so fun to see live too.
I've been a fan since their first record. Saw them in LA on the first record, and they were amazing live. This new record hasn't grown on me yet, but you gave me an appreciation for this song.
Reminds me of Poison for sure and also Peace Of Mind by Boston. I love the way you break these songs down. This channel is my favorite.
Oh by the gods, thank you!
So much love to you Mr. Hawkins ♡
Cold As Ice!!! It’s not the first time Foreigner has sprung to mind upon hearing Ghost either.
Absolutely love Ghost, they are so much fun and incredible live! Hadn’t noticed the similarities with Poison until now, nice one!
Actually the same piano used in Spillways as ABBA used in Money money money. Cool little Trivia.
The most fun part about listening to Ghost is to find those 80s - 90s rock influences in their songs. Dance Macabre sounds like a Kiss song for instance.
I hear some Scorpions in that one too.
Justin has every skill to play a solo acoustic show and straight slay!
Im blown away by your musical knowledge and skill , I stand in awe mate !
LOVE Ghost! I do believe that it was your channel Justin, that introduced me to them.
There's a healthy dose of Alice Cooper's Poison in the pre-chorus and chorus. I commented that in response to @Kiripompone 's comment on the actual UA-cam/Vimeo video as soon as Ghost released it. It's nice to know I'm not the only one who so clearly hears it.
"Poison" was the song that first introduced me to Alice Cooper and has always been my favorite so that was the first song that popped into my head when I first heard this song as well.
I've been saying this since the song came out
Watcher In The Sky is my favourite song off the new album. The hook of the main riff is outstanding. Cracking song!!
Justin, great video! I'd love to hear you do an acoustic cover of this one. Keep up the podcasting.
To me, this is the best post you’ve done so far😃 cheers 🎼🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
"Discombobulating". What a wonderful english word that I've never heard before! Love "Spillways" too!
I wish I could decompress songs like Justin can , he's so musically intelligent and it's infuriating
Him and Rick Beato .
I know, right? I play and putter on the guitar all my life, never taught or trained - clueless. And Justin’s real time gift finding chords, progressions, riffs, homages, etc. make me feel like a music idiot. I love it!
YES.And Rick Beato and Fil(Wings of Pegasus)These three have given me such a musical education
Ghost, The Darkness and Night Flite Orchestra = best three bands of the 21st century
That's a big shout. But a good one. I like it!! Looking forward to seeing NFO at Bloodstock next weekend!
You forgot EVERGREY from Sweden now there's some stellar talent!
I like how 3 of 4 bands there are swedish haha :D
Adding to the comments on "Respite in the Spitafields", the stunning track is complete with a brilliant, atmospheric mid section that awesomely lifts the middle of Whitesnake's "Still of the Night" to excellent effect. "Spillways" meanwhile, the guitar lines and vocal delivery is very very like Blue Oyster Cult's "Dancing in the Ruins". And that is a very good thing.
Exactly! I thought I was the only one who heard Dancin' in the Ruins in Spillways.
@@lukemerlino Dancin' in the Ruins is a vastly underrated song! BoC are a vastly underrated band. Everyone knows the .."Reaper" but there is soooo much more than that. Anyone into Ghost should hear Dancin in the Ruins, along with something like "Nosferatu". Huge chills , atmosphere in that song that went into Ghost's earlier, darker songs. 👍👍
I played this song for my 70yr old father and he was like it sounds like something I've heard before. Justin nailed it, immediately made me giggle. Also smash.
Every time you was picking that A minor chord I was thinking of Dust in the Wind.
Yes! I didn't hear it until Justin broke it down.
I immediately thought of Runaway on the intro, but you're right on with Cold as Ice as well. Chorus does sound like "Poison", but also like "Livin' on a Prayer".
The guitar tone live is absolutely insane
The first time I heard this song I really didn't like it. Then I listened to it again. And again. And again. And then I was singing it at work. And now I've watched the music video and listened to it approximately 3,000 times. That's what Ghost is to me.
Ahh me too ❤
Would love it if you’d do some of Ben Howard’s recent stuff. Maybe the tiny desk he did!
Yes!
Just a brilliant band live - pure entertainment (isn’t that what we all want?) . Great musicians, theatrical and humorous.
A must see anytime they tour.
Thank you Justin as always another awesome video
Thanks so much Cashel!
Cold as ice, first thing I thought of when the song opened.
Impera is a masterpiece, can only recommend it.
Very excited for this one
For me, it started with "i just died in your arms tonight" and moved to "that don't impress me much", before sliding into Alice Cooper's "Poison". Also, the A-minor theme is slightly "dust in the wind" -esque.
I can't stop watching this channel. If you stop making videos, I'll be able to get on with my life.
Sorry.
@@JustinHawkinsRidesAgain I'm a huge fan. This channel is brilliant and greatly appreciated. My young sons, 7 and 9 only know you as the beast from their favorite video- One Way Ticket To Hell and Back
Question: In that video, Is that band you throw the ice ball at supposed to be the band LIVE from the 90's? If so, thank you so much!
You guys would be an incredible touring combo!!!!
Abba is a big influence on Tobias since he’s Swedish. Kiss inspired the stage look and theatrics
Masterpiece of an album as always 🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼
I'm no expert in the technical part of music, but I have seen many videos of musicians analyzing Ghost just like you and one thing that always shows is how unpredictable their songs are in terms of chords. I find that so cool
The Darkness and Ghost on tour together would make my life complete! That would be an amazing parring!
Justin, I think the first chord progression you dissect is more like the intro to Madonna's Like a Prayer?
Love your work man.
I actually need you to do an acoustic cover of this that was beautiful
Why wasn't I subbed to you already? Loving the way you break down the songs.
Great review, sir.
Thank you Justin Hawkins for baring your uhm…most vulnerable self with us! It’s fantastic 😅
Love this song, really starting to get into Ghost now and enjoying more than I thought
I saw Ghost live in Glasgow and they were a great band live. Really fun to see, the showmanship of it all was very fun
I watched your vid until 5.31 and I had to pause it because i'm blown away by how EASILY you managed to cracked the song... I mean, I try to learn all the songs by myself but I always end up on some "tabs" web site.... you sing so well too.. (first time on the channel btw) - Continue watching now
Lol, was hearing Poison in it too! And ABBA ofcourse. Hotdamn I'm so hooked on this song.
UR the man Sir Justin thxs again from HB from AZ
I’ve always thought of Ghost as Scooby-Doo chase music which is perfectly fine to me
Your playing around 5:00 reminds me of Heart
Justin. Just wanted to say thanks for putting the party back in music for a while. I do hope the power of Love will beat the Love of Power so that we will know Peace!
I will never understand how someone can listen to a song and then just start playing it! And I love this song!
I hadn’t noticed this song had some things in common with I Believe in a Thing Called Love. When the guitars start harmonizing in the solo, it brought me back.
I had never heard of Ghost until my son was in a tribute band for them. I really like the mysteriousness that they portray. Never seen another band anywhere close to that kind of thing.
Their Roky Erickson cover is great
I would love to see and hear a Darkness/Ghost team up, two great rocking songwriters like Justin and Tobias would prolly create something really special if they put their heads together.
Love them...seeing them and Spiritbox in Asheville next month and super stoked for both.
Luv it🤘✌
You're my hero!!!!!
The intro of the song reminds me of beginning of Show Must Go On by the Queen. I recently discovered you had the yt channel and now I am binge watching it.
The keyboard intro really hits with the Toto's Hold the line. Cool song :)
So happy you mentioned ABBA! I've been saying for some time that they sound like a modernized ABBA!
Tobias loves ABBA ☺️
Your helping me figure out their songs . Just when you think you got it they pull one of those unexpected changes on you . Hope to see them in San Diego AUG.26.
Loved the video Justin. I know many people have already asked but please do a video on Respite on the spittlefields by Ghost it's one of the best songs I have heard in years it's so powerful. And I think you would really love it 🤘🤘
My favorite thing about Ghost is if you just see them, you think you're getting Gorgoroth or Dark Throne, then you hear them and you're tapping your foot and smirking.
That's too funny, the Foreigner bit. My first thought was Bon Jovi - Runaway.
Justin, please do the griftwood review because you've now got me on this band and their new album is incredible. Also, love your work with the darkness, great live shows in Boston this year and previous years. keep making great music.
So good
* like how he never hides the influences. They are always up in front. Ghost is like a greatest hits of the eras. Imo.
Go away! No one is dumb enough to click that link.
@Violet every album has changed drastically from the previous one. They’ve been this way from the start. Anyone getting butthurt kind of signed up for it.
I'm hearing Foreigner in their rockier moments and even Toto's Hold the Line. I do like how they have brought these pre 80's rock structures and textures back. Maybe they will go full on psychedelic/garage rock for the next album
Very enjoyable to see you analyze Ghost. I didn't know what band you were in until now, but funny enough many people underrate your band like you did with Ghost :D Some top 100 songs of mine are Darkness songs for sure.
I preferred your last reaction though as you cut the sequences so short here. I'd prefer to hear the whole segment before you react to it, I guess it's down to knowing a song it is a bit distracting to have it cut off so abruptly.
If you are able to see them live, please do. They put a great show, probably one of my favorite concerts ever. They sound amazing and super fun show.
Ghost signature guitars are Hagstrom Fantomen. That’s a great model of this Swedish brand. You could try one of them or even the Superswede model (Les Paul type, that I use when I play The Darkness’ songs). Also, the Superswede (Swedish old edition was sometimes played by Björn Ulvaeus). Cheers and keep on rockin’!
I have the white Fantomen. Hagstrom makes very nice guitars for good prices.
@@Eric_01 You’re right. I have both Fantomen and Superswede and they’re great in my opinion. I bought an used Superswede and never regret having done it. I also found the white Fantomen on Black Friday and couldn’t leave go. Both are let handed , which make everything more difficult to find a good deal. I wonder how good must be the old Made in Sweden models.
Love my hagstrom viking!
The Hagstrom has been a signature, but Per is now playing a Fender Strat with what appear to be Duncan Seymour Hot Rails in the neck and bridge position for this tour- Presumably to brighten the tone a bit- a little more classic 80s strat power-metal-ish.
@@TKID-17105 that's his own guitar, he's used it for years. And yea it's cool he got the godhead to use his own for ghost but yes probably to brighten the tone in the mix is right.
