I’m glad it’s not just me bought a max terra assegai a year a go and I just don’t rate it.Was switching between the dhf & assegai a bit and then left the assegai on for 6 months to try get used to it but just can’t. Maybe I got a dud but when you feel the dhf compared to the assegai with your fingers the dhf is so much softer to the assegai in the same compound.
I have the DHF “Copy” the 29x2.6in Teravail Kessel as a front and the Assegai “Copy” 29x2.6” Teravail Warwick as a rear. True they’re both big tires and mounted on i35 and i40 (bigger than usual) RaceFace ARC rims with Wide CushCore. So I’m sure that helps with the grip but adds weight but I don’t worry about the weight as much. For me this has been one of the best tire combos I’ve ever run on my dry and loose So Cal trails. I ride a hardtail so my tire also need to really be “dialed” to add some compression as well as adding traction when I get bounced around the try while trying to keep a line. 😅

Previously only ran the minion or assegai, I'd completely agree, at first I loved the assegai but I found the unpredictable slip ruined my confidence after a few understeer experiences on hardpack. Currently on continental kryptotal fr and it's awesome, i thought it might roll slower but pb'd the flow trail straight up, Now I'm running conti's on the rear too cant rate them highly enough. The endurance trail was soooo fast but unfortunately blew it out of the downhill trails. Back on enduro casing for me but definately rate them high enough to give them a go
I loved the trail contis , I agree they are so fast! But the endurance compound as a front tire is scary for me when I hit hard pack. Like ice skates. I’m sure the enduro soft is much better but I’m not ready to take the weight penalty when maxxis makes lighter and stickier tires in the trail category
Im in middle TN and roll Hutchinson Griffus 2.5 front 2.4 rear and they are great! Very similar to dhf in front but the strength/weight ratio is incredible and they roll very well. The casings are phenomenal as well so there's my 2 cents lol. great video btw

Amazon has been where I order those here in the states. Would love to see your take on them but for my riding I’ve found my tires!
The DHF and Aggressor/ HR 2 for the rear is the way to go if you are looking for rolling speed. IMO the best combo for bikepark is Michelin DH 22 Front and DH 34/16 rear bullet proof combo but a bit heavy.
Switched permanently to a Schwalbe Magic Mary after trying it back to back with Assegai. Rolls WAYYYY faster (maxxterra vs Soft) and gives up very little in traction, just suits me better.
Hi! I came back after i riding the assegai for 2 months Here is i can say: Excelent grip, yes,i can say, rolling speed is a real thing... Especially on flat road or uphill, but who cares? We build more leg muscle💪🏻 Ok,on the jumps is amazing, cornering is insane and the braking power is excelent I don t even have the maxtera version or maxgrip so that s crazy,i only have the dual compund If you know how to ride, tyres won t be a problem, trust me. I even rode it on rainy days and it' just amazing It's also working or brapss and roosts😂💪🏻 Crazy grip,i love it
Had this happen to me first time today, third day on a new bike which has a half-worn assegai. Good wheel but also boring, the constant grip with no bite point feels more dead. Also love love love the DHF/dhr in maxxgrip, it bites!! If you can ride even half proper you prefer the dhf in my books. Even if the assegai didn't slide out. Dhf is surgical and a bot more drifty in the best way possible.
Completely agree with the random loss of traction, it is loose right now in oregon but it was somewhere i know i shouldnt of have, i definently wanna try the new tacky chans and see how they ride
Dude you’re crazy. I think you’re just a minion to the DHF. And I’m tired of your complaints. 😂😂😂😂 Ok enough puns. I love the Assegai. Im 💯 with you on the difference between the two, but I don’t feel like it provides any less feedback, have not noticed the break away like you mention, and hate that channel in the DHF. I threw one on the back bc it was all I had on hand after a sidewall tear while on a trip and man do I love it back there. So much traction on techy climbs, which is a lot of my riding. I have cleaned some climbs I was never able to do previously with the DHR2 bc it just claws into the ground whereas I would spin out with the DHR, even with shifting weight back. Im also probably a bit heavier than you so I tend to power up climbs as opposed to spin up and hop up em. I wonder if that might contribute to my lack of break away- more weight on the front the entire time in the corners, as opposed to all of a sudden a lot of weight on the side knobs at the extreme of the lean. I run the Maxx Terra (both front and back now) and they roll well enough. Dont think I would not go to Maxx Grip for exactly reason you mention. Probably has its place for certain trails but I don’t race or have time to constantly be changing up my equipment to best match the trail Im riding that day- I need good all rounder kinda stuff. Anyway good vid and glad you figured out what works for you- even if you are wrong- but then you’re a drummer so makes sense- you guys are used to the turn downs from us front men. 😂 🤙
I hated the dhf and wanted an assegai because i had alot of sudden breaks it traction. My YT Jeffsy came with dhr front and it works way better. How would you compare the conti front to your maxxis front dhr or dhf? Also ur video said you didnt use soft compound for the front. Why not?
The conti feels more like a magic Mary in my opinion. It’s great in loose but once you hit hardpack it’s like riding on ice. The knobs are too big and rubber is too hard. If you want the soft rubber in conti you have to go heavier casing. And I don’t know why. But that’s why maxxis is still king for me
Most important information I would like, what bike (travel), what terrain and what speed? That one clip looks like pretty flat trails with not a lot of lean. Probably didn’t slide all the way out because the side lugs bit into the dirt as it slid. Not all tires are best in all conditions.
I ride a Scor 4060 ST. Our terrain is super loose high speed upwards of 35mph and seen my friends break 40mph. Super dry lots of off camber. DHF is my go-to for pretty much any conditions personally
I've flipped and flopped over the years, I've also retired my Assegai front for DHR II exo 2.4 front, DHR II max terra 2.3 rear, it's just solid on uk trails and breaking is supreme.
Thanks dude!! 🍻 honestly if it wasn’t for a handful of instances where this happened to me I’d still be on the assegai. It’s a great tire but I just can’t handle the random loss of traction.

I had the break away thing a couple of times so took it off. Like end up on the floor and dont understand why. I think its during the transition between centre and edge thats the problem. DHR2 F/R only for me. Sure the world cup racers have absolutely no issues!
If I could only have 1 tire the rest of my life. It’s dhr2 hands down!
I 100% agree 🍻
I’m not a fan of 2.6 but on a hardtail they are a game changer. Especially with cushcore
@@dustinbjohnson Yes, just look at the WC Championship bicycles from XC to DH. They are usually 2.5” max and the light weight XC bikes with 2.2.
It makes the bike faster and much more precise on your line choices. Those guys are pushing extreme limits.
Hearing good things about the tacky chan super trail in the ultra soft front and soft rear combo!
Definitely looks intriguing. But everytime I put a Schwalbe on my bike I’m disappointed. Their casing just doesn’t feel as good to me. They get pinged around and have more deflection then maxxis in my experience
Yeh it's deadly.. Happened to me a few times riding really fast, sent me otb down a small cliff one time, happened in a blink. Happens so quick its hard to catch. Going to get a DHF next and retry.
Damn!!! Ya man it’s a real thing with that tire! Were you on maxxterra or maxxgrip?
@@dustinbjohnson That was a MaxxGrip running 23psi w/Kushcore too!
Have you thought about trying the versus all mountain tire? Looks interesting and a great price point, might be my next set! Waiting for my assegai/dhr2 combo to get worn down.
I have looked into them. But on paper they don’t sing to me. If I see them on a super duper deal I may snag one and try it up front and go from there
Have you ridden the 2.4 WT 3C max terra EXO+ Forecaster V2 yet? I would say what you're feeling is the side knobs folding over. pressure has a lot to say about that, as well as the side knob block support design, but when I feel that whoosh too much, ill add a few psi at a time and see if that helps.
Yah PSI is key! I’ve spend years dialing in my PSI. It’s a fine art haha. And no I haven’t tried the 2.4 3c forkaster. It’s a really good tire. But not something I’d ever run as a front personally
Dustin have you tried the Tacky Chan MTB tire from Schwalbe?
I haven’t tried that one yet. Looks a little too beefy for my liking. But if I get a hold of one I’ll chuck it on
Hey Dustin are you really tyred of tyre shit haha crazy how people get all worked up about the tyres we like you did convince me to buy some dhf max terras after ages on assi s. On hard pack the dhf is maybe better but in the loose stuff like super dry and dusty i think i prefer tge assi but only in 2.6 the 2.5 is kinda scary cant say one rolls faster than the other but only running 3c compound .
Haha! I know people get so mad at me if I change my mind! 😂 fact of the matter is they are all great tires! All just have different characteristics. And just depends on what the rider is looking for…. Except the Maxxis Ardent. That’s the worst tire ever made 😂
@@dustinbjohnson why dont you do a vid on tyre pressure that would really stir them up ha ha i aggree about the ardent cant believe i bought more maxxis tyres after starting on the one and only ardents come to think about it i think all maxxis xc tyres are total shit .
I agree. Assegai is great but you lose the sense of connection with the bike. Also, hot take- jay Weinberg or Joey jordison?
personally dont feel the loss of connection with the bike with the assegais, and joey 100%. Jay made the band boring to me lol
@@kenai_the_asian8106 they are both great tires but I prefer the DHF. I’m currently running the assegai. DHF feels better in corners! contrary, the loose and drifty here in the PNW and I’ve noticed I’ve enjoyed hammering the front brake w the assegai up there! They both have there purpose
Hands down my favorite comment!! Bro that’s tough… I have to go with Joey. He was my idol growing up… BUT… Weinberg is an absolute monster!! And I’m now a huge fan of his!! Great question 🥁
Jay makes the band groove now!
Thanks dude! Those are definitely good looking tires. I’ll try them if I get the chance 🍻
@@dustinbjohnson make sure to get the 1ply 66 tpi race repost gravity hardskin in both tires. 2x66tpi is overkill at least for my riding. Like you we have to pedal up to get the fun down, although I’ve been to the beech mountain bike park in NC where they were awesome and held up with no issues.
Yah dude! Aggressor is my rear go-to. HR2 is a sleeper for sure!
Yeah, DHF is a greate do it all tire, haven´t tried the Assegai yet
Both are killer. Just different
Switched permanently to a Schwalbe Magic Mary after trying it back to back with Assegai. Rolls WAYYYY faster (maxxterra vs Soft) and gives up very little in traction, just suits me better.
The Mary in the orange is a really good all around tire. That with a will out back is my combo if I were to run Schwalbe
@@dustinbjohnson tend run it with a Nic, but do put a Will on the rear for the dry.
Building up an RLT 9 here, too. I'm interested to see yours.
Oh hell yah! It’s actually a really sick bike. I’ll post a bike check soon. 🍻
Hi! I came back after i riding the assegai for 2 months
Here is i can say:
Excelent grip, yes,i can say, rolling speed is a real thing... Especially on flat road or uphill, but who cares? We build more leg muscle💪🏻
Ok,on the jumps is amazing, cornering is insane and the braking power is excelent
I don t even have the maxtera version or maxgrip so that s crazy,i only have the dual compund
If you know how to ride, tyres won t be a problem, trust me.
I even rode it on rainy days and it' just amazing
It's also working or brapss and roosts😂💪🏻
Crazy grip,i love it
Had this happen to me first time today, third day on a new bike which has a half-worn assegai.
Great explanation!
🍻🍻
Completely agree with the random loss of traction, it is loose right now in oregon but it was somewhere i know i shouldnt of have, i definently wanna try the new tacky chans and see how they ride
Oh ya forgot about that tire! Looks good and solid weight
Dude you’re crazy.
I think you’re just a minion to the DHF.
And I’m tired of your complaints.
😂😂😂😂
Ok enough puns.
I never said I wasn’t crazy… drummers are just wired differently 😂🤪 it’s okay if you like the assegai, we can’t all be winners… 🤣🍻
@@dustinbjohnson 😂 happy riding bro
@@dadventuretv2538 cheers homie 🍻🤘
I hated the dhf and wanted an assegai because i had alot of sudden breaks it traction. My YT Jeffsy came with dhr front and it works way better. How would you compare the conti front to your maxxis front dhr or dhf? Also ur video said you didnt use soft compound for the front. Why not?
The conti feels more like a magic Mary in my opinion. It’s great in loose but once you hit hardpack it’s like riding on ice. The knobs are too big and rubber is too hard. If you want the soft rubber in conti you have to go heavier casing. And I don’t know why. But that’s why maxxis is still king for me
@@dustinbjohnson ty so much. I’m due for tires!
@@supplemtb7167 yah man! I love tire talk 🍻
@@dustinbjohnson Thanks for the reply. Appreciate the video might not be representative of all your riding. Testing tires is great fun.
@@justinfournier1285 yah man tires are my favorite thing to play with. I love how they change the feel of your ride.
I've flipped and flopped over the years, I've also retired my Assegai front for DHR II exo 2.4 front, DHR II max terra 2.3 rear, it's just solid on uk trails and breaking is supreme.
Try the Mazza. F**k'n awesome 👍
I got a video on that tire! Very good tire but maxxis still wins for me 🍻
Had the same experience on Assagai
Dude it’s so weird. That tire feels amazing… then out of nowhere… it steps out and scares the heck out of me!
I might have to throw a DHF back on and give it a try.
Takes me a ride or 2 to adjust going back and forth. But definitely give it a try!
Always absolutely love your reviews. I’ve just destroyed a Magic Mary in the Alps and looking at trying a DHF front and rear 😏
Can never go wrong with a DHF!
@@dustinbjohnson thank you
Trying out the new Purgatory 2.4 in T9 as a front 🤞
The last generation one was awful. New one looks much better
Would love to watch some golf videos too!
Maybe I’ll add some in! Maybe I’ll start with a bag check and show my setup. Been really into golf lately
VitalMTB did a front tire test and the assegai ended close to last place. Which even surprised the testers

I’m on that right now. It rips!
Honest and interesting review, thanks! You really got me thinking if just putting Assegai in the front without second thought is the best choice.
Thanks dude!! 🍻 honestly if it wasn’t for a handful of instances where this happened to me I’d still be on the assegai. It’s a great tire but I just can’t handle the random loss of traction.
@@dustinbjohnson now I will pay extra attention for such sudden loss of travel. It could be, well, dangerous. Ride well, man!
@@finroddd I have a video when I’m riding Dry Creek trail . It’s like a 30min video. But check out the first 5 mins or so. You see it happen
It seems like the High Roller vs Minion back in the day.
I prefer DHF in Maxxgrip as well.
Tried and true! 🍻
The DHF doesn't even compare to an Assegai lol I have run 6 DHFs and All pretty disappointing they are a 7 of 10 the Assegai is a 9 of 10 ..... I have 40000km worth of Off Road Experience I Know what a Good Tire Is 😎 will never mount a DHF again ever .
I've went to kryptotal Fr and Xynotal rear from assegai aggressor and love the faster rolling it has. Not as much grip but like you're saying the predictability is where it's at. Plus it makes you a better rider 🤘🏾
Hell ya! What compound you got up front? I found the endurance compound to be super sketchy on hard pack
@@dustinbjohnson DH both sides and super soft. We have a lot of sharp rock in NM and I go pretty hard. But still fast rolling for DH man. I'm gonna swap the rear for Enduro soft and put in an insert w some carbon hoops soon so that should fkn shred bruh! 🤘🏾💀

Where does argotal go? Is it used more as a f or r tyre than kryptotal
I love the Assegai but moved off of it as well for some more rolling speed. Traction is awesome though. Never had the break away like you experienced though. With the DhF it can drift and I know how it feels and what it’s going to do.
Yeah man. I like the feedback the DHF gives me. I always know what it’s doing and at full lean. I feel it locks in better then the assegai imo
I've never tried the Assegai but I love the DHF up front, feel like it really teaches you to lean the bike.
I'm really interested in the new Schwalbe Tacky Chan, looks like Schwalbe have made their own DHF.
The tacky Chan does look interesting the more I look at it!
Schwalbe Tacky and Conti Kryptotals are on another level to the tires you’ve mentioned. Time to think outside the box.
Tacky looks dope. But I dont like the Schwalbe casings as much as maxxis. I prefer the feel of maxxis casing. And until the Kr Fr comes in soft in trail casing I’m staying with maxxis. Just the best blend of rolling, ease of pedaling and downhill traction for me.
@@dustinbjohnson Casing are a non issue for me as I tune them with inserts anyway.
@@gweflj insert’s definitely feel good on the downs. But adding rotational weight is just a no go for me haha
