He had cancer and short time to live, he was a hero because he left being a hero, helping the comunity getting rid of that gang of their shoulders. One of Clint's best films.
I’m so used to seeing Clint always being the cowboy or the detective who blows away the bad guys in every movie I’ve seen him in. When I first saw this movie I was in shock until I realized that he sacrificed himself for that beautiful family and the community. This is a great movie.
Walt died like a spartan warrior of old, the spartans were thought vain because they would wash themselves and prepare everything for their death before battle, walt knew he was dying anyway, he came to love the family and his sacrifice allowed their freedom to them
What I find interesting is that most of the reactors don't recognize, or don't comment on, the Hail Mary he begins to pray when he reaches for his lighter. That, to me anyway, it the "tell" about what his plan is.
it was his self-imposed penance for what he'd done in Korea, he'd been living with guilt for that for years. He helped Tao get rid of that gang and paid for his sins at the same time. Not bad for a guy everyone described as a "bigoted racist"
This is another movie that would NEVER get made in the present climate. Movies use to tackle uncomfortabe subject matter head on. Eastwood is severely underrated as an actor and director
Everybody expects Clint Eastwood to just miraculously waste everybody in a Clint Eastwood movie. This was different. It was real. That's why I like this movie
Since he was in the open facing so many, I remember how is Walt/Clint( usual movie stuff) going to pull this one out. Why is he in the open? This is over the top even for a Clint Eastwood movie. It was because it was not going down the usual way!
This was exactly how Walt drew this up. He was dying of cancer anyway so he decided to go out as a hero. He was also a Korean War veteran who was haunted by the memory of killing Hmong soldiers including one who was peacefully trying to surrender. Because Thao and Sue are Hmong decent, Walt saw this as an opportunity to redeem himself of his past transgressions. He was unarmed so that way the gang couldn’t use self-defense. He also made sure to loudly berate them in order to attract witnesses so that way the gang would never get away with their crimes. Another great attention to detail, Walt’s body is laid out as Jesus on the Cross, symbolizing him as a Christ-like figure because he made the ultimate sacrifice to save others. Such an outstanding movie and the writing and acting makes this one of Clint Eastwood’s best movies.
I don’t think the kid he mentioned killing in Korea was Hmong, pretty sure he was Korean. Sue said in the movie that the Hmong started moving to the US after they were being killed off after the US pulled out of the Vietnam War, since they fought against the communists with the US
AMEN. And the ending probably caught a lot of people off- guard as well, considering most Clint Eastwood movies and his usual M.O. I dare say most people expected a two- sided gun battle at the end.
Walt won.. his wife was dead, this was a chance to see and be with her again... he was facing a long painful death from cancer... but more important, he feels it's a chance to atone for his past war things... and all of that while saving a family... Great story. ❤
Clint Eastwood is such a great actor and such a legend he’s one of the reasons why I want to be a Actor thank you Clint Eastwood for the inspiration and for all the amazing performances his performance in this movie was amazing his character was a true hero giving his life for this innocent family I wish more selfless people like this existed in real life ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Some people complain that this was just another trope of "White Man saving helpless foreigners" but as a Catholic, Kowalski knew he had to repent for his sin of being a racist and he was running out of time. That's why he was saying the Hail Mary, which is a common prayer to say after confession.
The Christian Bible says: "Greater love has no man than this, that he lay down his life for his friends.” ~John 15:13 (KJV) Walt was a hard man... but he was a good man.
There's a line in the book Hannibal..." If you're a warrior Arlington is sacred, and the tragedy isn't to die, it's to be wasted." Walt wasn't wasted, he died for something good, and that made it worthwhile for him. There are worse things than dying, as an ICU nurse of more than 20 years I can attest to that. Walt weighed it up...a slow death to lung cancer or a quick end that does someone some good. No choice really.
The talk he had with Tal in the basement and locking him in the basement. It feels horrible killing someone, Walt lived with his war guilt. Kiilling asians, why he gave Tal the medal and felt like he was saving asians. People miss this point
I don't know how anybody can resist crying at the end of this film. Walt starts out with such a racist distain for his neighbors, especially the one who tried to steal his car, but in the end he grew to care about and love this family and was happy to give his life for them, since he knew his time was not long, and I am sure he did not want to live through the degrading and debilitating time that cancer puts a person through. I was shocked when he got shot up, just like a lot of people did....until you start to suspect why he did it, or when the officer explains the situation and it is easy to put together what happened. The guy who wrote this script, this was his first one made into a film. I wish I had written it.
Walt has done the Sacrament of Reconciliation (Confession) and received Absolution (which covers all his sins, just just the ones he remembered), and his final act isn't suicide..though the odds of surviving all those rounds wasn't good,,. Walt puts himself in a deadly situation to save the lives of the innocent, and finally, he asks for the Blessed Virgin's intercession in the hour of his death.. Walt's good.
It just occurred to me. How did Walt's family (especially the granddaughter) react to his murder? The Will reading was a hint but I could imagine how entitled they behaved. Any anime reactions? One Piece: Merry's funeral and Ace's final thank you! The Book Of Eli plot twist! Christmas special: Home Alone 2, Marv getting electrocuted!
@@SweetheartQuest in a different scene , Clint’s character told a priest that he held guilt from his days as a soldier in the Korean War. “I was forced to do horrible things that won’t leave me.” Years after the war, the older Clint character found out that he was dying of cancer, so he decided that he wanted to die protecting his community innocently without a gun to make the gangbangers go to prison without the ability to claim self defense on an old man without a gun
My prayer is when I die my enemies rejoice even from the depths of Hell because I am no longer in the fight. Heros are never born they are made and usually by their actions.
Unfortunately, with the courts today, these guys wouldn't be convicted. Walt had pulled a pistol on them before, and had a history of threatening behavior. Any decent lawyer would argue that it was reasonable to think he was pulling out a weapon, since that was exactly what he was pretending to do, and that the shooting was an act of self defense and therefore justified. If you take out the fact that these guys deserved it, and remove the part of the story that the court would never hear because what they had done wasn't proven and inadmissible, they would be found not guilty. I would also vote not guilty.
"Did he sacrifice himself on purpose?" ...noooo, he just had the most costly senior moment of all time! And he shoulda double-checked after last week when he went to light a cigar with a glock.😂
Notice he let the whole neighborhood know they had raped one of their own family so they would testify against them in court. The community wouldn't do that as long as they preyed on outsiders.
_THIS_ is the kind of stuff Hollywood isn't producing any more. It's all either stupid superhero BS or some woke shite....and they wonder why people are turned off by the movie industry these days.

getting rid of that gang of their shoulders. One of Clint's best films.
Agreed.
Sue and Tao became his adoptive family
"No man hath greater love than he who lays down his life for his friends."
He was sure to be unarmed so the gang couldn't claim self defense. He was about to die anyway, so he went out helping his neighborhood.
And made sure he stayed on the sidewalk..... so not trespassing... he was in the "Right of Way" not personal Property.............
Laid down his life for his friend. Nothing more noble. Walt had Cancer he knew he was dying. Went out like a Warrior.

He was an unironic Christ figure in this movie.
Walt had two confessions...one with the priest and another with Tao when he locked him into his home. Deep movie.
spot on.
One of the only times Ash didn't say something stupid at a bad time 😂
He is such a dolt. And loud.
I thought the exact thing. I was waiting for him to ruin the moment as he has for countless other movies.

It may come as a shock to you, but less than 18% of all the people in the world are Catholic.
To be fair, you'd only get that if you were Catholic or had a fire understanding of the Catholic faith.

That was definitely his plan that's why he went and bought a suit to be buried in, had a straight shave and confessed to the priest.
Some of them didnt even understand what he was doing...he made them kill an unarmed man, murder 1...straight to prison.

Thats what makes this ending so unique and great because u didnt expect
I appreciate the time and work you put in to these compilations, Brotha. Thank you
Clint Eastwood in his long career going back over 70 years has made great movies but this is easily my favorite ❤️
Movie Munchies girls were completely devastated
Even Clint Singing when the credit comes was amazing
Such an underrated performance by Clint
The Christian Bible says: "Greater love has no man than this, that he lay down his life for his friends.” ~John 15:13 (KJV)
Walt was a hard man... but he was a good man.
Not to be that guy but.... Not his friends for another. Meaning even an unknown fellow soul.
This is a great movie, one of my favorite Clint Eastwood films . He has a way with story telling that's unparalleled.

I don't know. That Indian telemarketer in the upper-right corner seems to be keeping a good poker face.

@Verasoul 🤣😂 I saw him blink once.

The officer changing languages to explain what happened...💔
Yes he knew that’s the point of the movie
"Live for nothing or die for something"
The medal is the Silver Star
Time to call it a day/life. Easily a top five-character development in film history.
Thanks again.
How many movies like this weve had in the last 15 years??? Not fooking one, this is what you call cinema

on a roll with your choices lately…please do “I am no man” scene from Lord of the Rings, the ladies loved it 😊
That was cringe.
Why? They completely fumbled the narrative of that scene from book to film in place of a "look at the sudden badass woman" trope.
😢😢😢😢😢
A true American hero. Old School bravery.
