  • In this video we go over our Jeep Grand Cherokee WK2 and show you it's underbelly, all the dents, and scratches to show you where we have taken the most hits. Using this information as a guide we will help you walk through knowing what order to add protection to your rig.     I got pretty much the same set up. Hidden winch, lower front guard, sump protection, transmission plate, and rear bumper guard. Everything from Chief is a high quality!

    This was one of your best video Brad because it shows the real world experience, in a variety of off road conditions, and how that impacts your under carriage and wear the vulnerable parts are. You are a great ambassador for Chief, surprised they haven’t acknowledged your contributions yet. Maybe a new hat for you?! Have you done a video on what the inside of your TH looks like? How you organize it, protect it, keep it clean after an excursion etc? With a wife and kids and dog I imagine there are some lessons learned there. Lol.

    I added an extra factory rim and spare. Easier to get at then under the truck.. floor jack n milwaukee impact and air compressor.
    Always carry contractor bags to get under the truck

    Love your videos. I learned my 4-wheeling on a 02 WJ QT2 and man did you hit the nail on the head: learning how to pick lines, a mild lift, a little bigger tire, full skids, and rock rails are the recipe to a huge improvement in safe wheeling. I did that to my WJ and I'm doing it to my 19 WK2 Laredo (2-1/2 RRO lift, RRO sliders, Chief trans plate, sump plate and tires next) - and these babies make really decent trail rigs for mild to moderate wheeling. Nothing better than exploring a mountain Jeep road on vacation and taking clients to dinner in style back home!

    When I was doing blues at AOAA last fall I came down hard on a boulder and seriously dented my Chief transmission plate. It paid for itself on that trip!

    Im putting a new bull bar on my grand and I do want to get , or make some skid plates , because of the lack of ground clearance in this vehicle. I'm 58 years old and been 4 wheeling since the 70s and I've never had a 4wd vehicle with skid plates, and I've had many 4wd vehicles including dodge ramcharger, Toyota 4x4 trucks, and Ford explorers

    Just to clarify: All Jeep Grand Cherokees with a 'Trail Rated ' badge come with factory skid plates. Whether it's a Laredo,Limited or other trim. 'Trail Rated' Grand Cherokees all have the same protection as a standard TrailHawk model.
    The weakness are : plastic front sump, plastic transmission cover. These all need to be replaced with either aftermarket skids. The only protection difference on 'Trail Rated' Grand Cherokees & a TrailHawk model is that you can order factory rock rails on a Trail Hawk as an option. On other models you'd have to order them after the fact from Mopar or go aftermarket.

    I've looked at cheif but have decided to go with offroad animal for front, rear and rock slides as I've got a 2014 JGC Overland with the 5.7 Hemi. I'm also running Falken wildpeak a/t 265/70/R17. Love your vids and love from Eastern Washington!!!

      I would go with the Chief rock sliders (and I did), but, like you, I like the look of the ORA front bumper since it covers a bit more. Go with Chief's heavy-duty sump plate, though. It's about 40 pounds of steel rather than aluminum. Zero regrets on that one!

    Great Video! Thanks for the information! I'm starting a step or two below the Trailhawk with an Upland. I suspect that a (2.5") lift AND some 33's would be where to begin... then rails and armor. Thoughts? (and then I watched the end of the video and found your take. LOL)

    What do you think of off road animal protection? They have some pretty cool stuff. I'm in a debate on getting off road animal vs chief.

      We have been very happy with chief products. I would not go with off road animals front recovery points. they are too small in my opinion. However the folks we have had out with there stuff seem happy.

    I know you have all chief products, but I'm curious, have you seen the new offroad animal front bumper? If so, what'd you think? Only available in Australia for now.

    You didn't talk about the fuel tank skids. How often do they see action? Those are the last plates of my install, before I get to sliders and bumpers. 2012 Laredo.

      They have some scrapes. But not major dents. But yes. I would want them on. I would say not transfer case plate was more roughed up than those.

      Yes , and definitely I would recommend the heavy duty one. However I don’t see that they have that option with the access panel for the v8

      Yes we have a wich, Its a Smitty built X2O winch. It sits under the front bumper area.

    Brad, have you noticed any change in the car after installing all this protection? Noise or vibration? Is Transmission temperature within normal range? I want to install all these protections but it is really hot here in Saudi so I want to make sute the transmission will not get hot.
    Also was fuel economy affected?

      I haven't noticed any changes to transmission temps with these additions and no extra noise. Overall, we have had a couple MPG decrease in fuel economy

I’ve purchased and installed Chief Products rock rails to my 2012 Laredo but am now interested in purchasing the front lower guard, recovery hooks and nudge bar for a similar setup like yours. Any advice on what I should purchase and install first?? Thank for any feedback and all your great videos!!

      I’d make the lower front guard my next purchase if your gonna take your time getting things. But you do have to take off the lower front guard off to install the others

    Question am I able to install locking diffs from a trail hawk on my limited to have front and rear lock or is there some aftermarket. Nice vid

      I don't know of any aftermarket options that integrate with the GC. If you're referring to a Grand Cherokee Trailhawk, The rear Dif is an ELSD, not a full locking diff. And I have never hear of swapping them

      @@ProdigalOverland, yes I did. The rear differential is tucked up fairly well but I can just imagine how obscenely expensive it would be to have replaced if that case got cracked! Nobody makes a simple bolt on rear diff guard for the WK2 that is reasonably priced?

      @@ProdigalOverland, looks nice but it's a little expensive though. Although it appears to be the only one available. I see rear diff guards for the WK for as little as $130 but nothing for the WK2.

      @Prodigal Overland , that rear diff in your Trailhawk is in the $1,100 - $1,200 range which isn't bad when you consider the fact that it includes that little electric motor that operates the ELSD that FCA wants over $500 for by itself. Of course unless you have the tools and know what you're doing, you'd have to pay to have it installed which would probably double the price so that 6 monkeys rear diff guard just might be a wise investment. They might cut you a deal in exchange for a little bit of product promotion.
