In my mid-twenties, I went on an archaeological dig in the desert. To avoid the hottest daytime, we started at 6 a.m. and finished at 1 p.m. The camp leaders did regular water breaks for us at least once an hour in addition to fruit breaks (electrolyte supplements weren't a thing back then, but the fruit served the same purpose). They insisted that we drank 6 litres of water during the dig. Those who did were okay, those who didn't got seriously ill. Ever since I have followed these camp rules in hot weather conditions, and they have never let me down.
I’m so happy to live in NZ…I’ve never had to filter water in our back country…30+% is conservation land with 1,500 hiking huts, with a large number free
I know where I need to go backpacking! ❤ Sounds like such a different experience than the USA!

Thanks for the video. Water discipline, folks! I have an alarm on my mobile so that I remember to stop and hydrate. Also, in my area all drinking water is bottled. Since I started hiking, I’ve become so concerned about microplastics that I filter everything.
I was attempting the A.T. Approach trail at Amicalola falls yesterday, and about only 2 miles in I had already drained my 74 oz camel pack just because I had no idea the stairs were actually a part of the trail😭I got to a small brook around the 3 mile mark and was kicking myself for not bringing some type of water filtration. Ended up having to turn around at that point 😪

Oh man! It's easy to underestimate how much we truly need, especially when working in conditions like that!

Smart thinking on both accounts!

Oh man! These are things I've learned the hard way, too. I bet that lesson has stuck for you! Thanks for sharing!
