You just…don’t give any player an average of 46 million fully guaranteed per year over 5 years. Not even peak Tom Brady or Patrick Mahomes is worth that money, and somehow Watson was.

As a 49er faithful, I think it’s funny that our worst QB contract was with a QB that took us to an NFC championship game and helped propel us to a Super Bowl appearance, made 3 Pro Bowls in his career, was a comeback player of the year, was never an issue in the locker room, and was never responsible for any dead cap money. His level of play was severely hampered by the coaching staff his first 6 years, but once he had competent coaching, he was a quality starting QB. I’m sure there are plenty of teams that would trade their current QB for an Alex Smith level QB.
I was going to point out that many really good QBs might be on this list because of the coaching scenario. Few QBs overcome the coaching problems of the team. And it is becoming obvious that it was Brady that was the success behind the Pats, not necessarily Belichick.

Glennon’s contract wasn’t bad for journeyman QBs at the time, so while he’s the worse player, Cutler’s contract for 2014 and falloff was worse, resulting in a much bigger waste of money. If Cutler wasn’t one of the Bears best QBs, they probably cut their losses sooner.
