It’s not just the content Ben, you’re a likable guy. I was drawn in by the content , but stayed because of you. From a 64 year old father of four daughters and married to the best woman on the planet, 40 yrs, and rides a 701, keep up the good work and continued success. Would love to ride with you sometime, your Dorkness.
hope y'all don't have the same wife... @@elgringoec . Dork, same content as others... but you're a natural, and likable, and comfortable in front of the camera. And, we all like to see a normal guy doing what we want to do. Pol Tarres is super cool, but not an inspiration for the masses.
I agree with the folks above except about the best wife thing. :) My husband and I just bought a pair of dual sport bikes because you said “if I can do it, you can do it!” Love you and your content!
Great points, I totally agree. My two cents: for anyone considering this... think about what happens when you turn your primary passion/hobby into a business. Just like you said, it's either a hobby, or a business. It cannot be both.
@bigrockmoto so true. i spent 25 days riding two up across Italy... not gonna lie, it would have been easier, more fun, and more romantic, if I wasn't trying to capture so much to video, and have to empty memory cards to hard drives every single night, etc. etc. But, sacrifices must be made :) Love many of your videos too btw. I've probably watched your Z900RS one a few times.
Congratulations on 100k, Ben! You absolutely deserve it and much more! I'm sure I'm one of the creators in this video that you referred to... I had meteoric growth, an amazing audience, and squandered it away. But there is more to the story. Leaving (or massively limiting) social media production and consumption saved my life. You mentioned several ways to grow a channel in the video, all are absolutely true and well known. What I'd like to add is the toll it takes on the mind, on the family, and on one's very soul to to be a "social media influencer"... a term I've grown to hate. Some people are built for it, some people are not. I discovered I was not built for it. I spent a lot of time climbing the UA-cam, Instagram , and Facebook ladders... only to discover they had no top. The goalpost is always moving, the carrot on a stick can never be grasped. The higher I climbed, the more I reached, the more I lost myself, and the farther from my wife and kids I got. I am immensely grateful for the growth I had and what that meant for my rallies and circle of close friends I would not have of not for social media. I wouldn't give it up for anything, but in my mindless quest for UA-cam fame, I lost perspective, and almost lost everything else.
You're an inspiration to me, man. You always will be. Both in terms of getting me excited about riding and making content and in having the strength and courage to take a step back when you needed to. This whole thing takes a huge toll and it sucks that it's kind of taboo to talk about it because of "it beats flipping burgers" and "must be a nice problem to have" type comments. I have nothing but respect and admiration for you, my man. I'm sorry if you thought I was referring to you in any negative way. I have seen these things happen to many channels I follow and nothing was directed at you specifically.
Respect bro. Thank you for sharing your perspective because it's helpful to the rest of us to know what it's really like, and the price you have to pay for "success." Wishing you a healthier life on these platforms from here on in.
Years ago, I had a UA-cam channel full of successful geocaching videos, many of which had hundreds of thousands of views. I had set it up for monetization, but never received a penny, and when UA-cam radically changed the subscriber requirements, I lost my wind and stopped. With all that said, your channel has really grown on me, and has become one of my very favorites. Great job, Ben! 🤙🏼
I've been on YT for 4 years, but I've only been solo for a little over a year so I'm still learning a lot of these lessons lol. The most annoying thing is making a video you know is great and you think is going to crush it than watching it land 10/10 then another video you threw together in a day land 1/10. It's a little frustrating.
Apart from being clever and creative there are two very good reasons why people like you Ben: 1) You're dead honest - love it when you say you have been wrong and you're honest enough to admit it (e.g. 300 Rally video) and 2) You're a sharer - you are open to sharing and that is a rare commodity nowadays. Congrats and keep up the great work!
Thanks for the tips as a retired pro rider with a quarter the subs you have its just like you say. Separate the job hobby aspect! For me its more hobby maybe if the channel grows I will pump out more videos... YT is a tough crowd for motorcycle riders even good riders!
Love seeing your success and "Average riders riding Average places" made me LOL. I started my channel as a hobby but it started feeling like a job when you're filming and editing for hours for a tiny amount of views on the majority of videos. Plus the last two years what I've been doing doesn't match the direction I was taking the channel. Good job staying focused and staying dedicated to your success
As a small channel myself I have come to understand that this has become a hobby. I have tons of footage to produce more videos, but I hit a wall of just finding my stuff utterly boring, and if I'm bored I can only imagine how the audience feels. I still want to finish all my videos of my 50 state journey, but yeah I need to change how I edit, and cut out so much bland stuff. haha Congrats on your success I hope it goes even further, and thank you for the great advice video.
Thanks for taking your time to do this video. I jotted down 2.5 pages of notes! lol. A lot of it was smiling and nodding and saying "yep!" throughout your video because your tips line up with my experience, but, when you have a hunch about something, it's always good to hear affirmation from people with way more experience in the field. Congrats on the 100k and keep up the great work Ben!
Thanks for this! There are not a lot of moto specific UA-cam strategy videos out there! This has a lot of excellent advice that Tom gonna try to apply to my channel!
Congrats on 100k. You're a genuine guy Ben. You exhibit an honest interest in your viewers. I have zero interest in being a youtuber...yet I watched this video through to the end. Interesting content, even as a UA-cam consumer. I think that's why you succeed. You get people to watch even if the content is not motorcycles, reviews, rides, etc.
Well for admitting to; “not being a utube guru” you sure spit out a wealth of information. More than I glean from actual “utube gurus”. Thanks!! Congratulations!!! I don’t believe in luck. You stuck to it, learned and have personality. Not luck. Oh and your grateful attitude is great to see!
I think I've been here since 10Kish. And it was always been about the honesty and shortcomings. And just getting out and camping/touching dirt. And Tim and Travis and little Dork. I'm just an old dude who you helped along the way to get inspired to get back on a bike, ok I bought two. So cheers to you and yours.
I decided to watch this video because I haven't seen one of your videos in a while and I gotta say this is probably one of the best I've seen in a while. I'm not a UA-camr, but I think a lot of your tips are applicable in the workplace. Congratulations on the 100K!!
There’s a lot to be said for your voice and personality. All you said is true but that’s a factor. I started watching you because of beginner bike content before I took the MSF course and bought a bike. I started recording videos while riding and realized I do not yet have a story I would watch and I’m not ready to start reviews or tutorials with any direction or consistency. My full time job and other hobbies don’t leave enough time for the content I would like to create. You’ve got me thinking about how to bridge that gap between what I want to do and what I can do.
Good stuff! The hobby vs job part resonates with me. I totally understand what I need to be significantly bigger, but I’m squarely in the “hobby” mode and I don’t mind at all. Keep it up!!!
Congrats on the 100k. Spot on video. Everything you said is exactly what needs to be said. One day when I’m not working 11 hours a day at my real job and can work on getting better at youtube. 😅
Congrats! I found your channel because of the beginner ADV bike comparison you did. I STAYED because I like your character and you are a good educator (a little goofy is likeable). Thanks for being you! And I am still torn between a V-Strom and a Transalp!
Thanks you. I am a 10k channel and this video helped me to really understand I need to reassess where I am and where I want/need to go. Congrats on the 100k
Don't underestimate how important your genuine and unique character is to your adv and dual sport riding audience. It seems you have figured out the current UA-cam formula - congrats on your success.
Congrats on 100K. I remember when you first started out and I mistakenly thought there's no way you would make it work. I'm glad you suck with it. I'm still trying to hit 10K but I don't put as much time and effort into my channel as you have over the years. Thanks for the video, and here's to the next 100K!
Ben, this is legitimately one of the best UA-cam channel explainers out there; I've spent the last few months watching other 'how-to's' or tips n tricks about starting your own channel up and this is, by FAR, the best one out there I've found. Really hoping to get started up this spring on my KTM 500 and I'll be heeding your advice!
You're so much more than meets the eye. We all need to look deeper at ourselves and what we honestly want to get out of our you tube experience. Thanks for getting us to ask those questions. Hopefully we talk more next time our paths cross.
Great video Dork, a lot of the things you've mentioned here are things I am trying to do on my channel but I also realise that I am on the hobbyist side so at the end of the day, I still like making content that I enjoy watching which may not be best for my channel.
I really appreciate this video! I’m trying to “break” into the adventure motorcycle UA-cam scene, so this video is great. I think my videos are solid but these tips are illuminating thank you Dork you are a titan of industry from where I am at right now 😎
That clip of spilling the camp food is certainly getting a lot of mileage - and rightly so, as it never fails to make me laugh out loud! I'm so proud of your success and very appreciative of your inspiration to get out and ride. Here's to more content and (actually) riding together in the new year!
I like your random riding videos. Of course I am a 300 lb guy in my 40s recently returned to riding. I like seeing you explain techniques and push your limits. I find it extremely useful to see what your limits and techniques are
Great video. Lots of UA-cam advice out there but next to nothing for motorcycle content related channels. The points you make are good points of self reflection as I work to build my channels. Thanks for putting this out there.
UA-cam sounds like any other successful corporation. I've been in the camping/ RV business for 35 years and every once in awhile someone will tell me I'm just in it for the money. Well no kidding. I do enjoy my job for the most part but that's not the main reason I do it. And Oh yeah, congratulations on your accomplishments and hard work. I'm glad you got recognized for it. Thanks.
As I'm wrapping up my "year one" on this platform, I find this to be perfect timing and inspiring. Thanks for taking the time to help the aspiring channels like mine!
I loved the bit about riding up the mountain and meeting Zeus with the lightning bolt. I laughed right out loud. I totally get what you’re saying, but it was just the way you did. It was hilarious to me. 😂
Valuable insight, which you have provided new and inspiring UA-cam creators. I found your channel early on when you were buying your Versys 650. Your content has evolved and I am happy for your success. Congratulations!
As a UA-cam creator I can't thank you enough this video is very helpful. I am always so impressed with your style and videos...frankly you entertain me and teach me as I have reentered the world of motorcycles, dual sport, ADV and motocamping which scares me. Ride Safe keep posting.
Congrats on the 100k! Honestly, I'm going through a burnout that lasted all year it seems and needed this video to help me remember why I started putting videos out. I lost my ways and often found myself putting out the content I didn't like(along with some I enjoyed very much). I wrote your points down and will reflect everything in hopes 2024 will be the year that I start making the videos I enjoy to make again. Thanks DITR!
Excellent info. My favourite thing about your videos is your ability to boil down ideas & articulate them. I think it's fair that UA-cam isn't fair, but it certainly makes it hard for those of us down a few rungs on Pareto's distribution ladder.
So glad you figured it out! One of the things that new Tubers forget is that they ride a LOT more than their audience, so they progress faster, go through bikes faster, more gear, more experiences.... So what might be boring to you, because you ride a so frequently, might not be boring to some of us who get to ride a couple times a month because of jobs, family, and other obligations. For a while I felt like you were moving much faster along then, for example, I am in motorcycling, and so what you were posting was no longer relevant to me. However, you now seem to have hit a sweet spot where you can share your new experiences but are still connected to viewers who just don't ride and progress as frequently. Congrats on your Channel!
Thank you for this helpful video. I am considering doing something with my channel (it was made to share with friends and family) and I am learning from watching good guys like you.
A very compelling and insightful video into the machinations of UA-cam logarithms. Excellent work on getting to 100,000 subscribers! (I'm just one of them) And Mate! .... I liked the Snowman, as I will never get to make or see one, here in the sub tropics of Australia. 😄
So proud of you dude, I have a fan and follower from the beginning. You film skills, presentation, and genuine personality are on point you in my opinion one of the better ADV influencers on the Tube. Keep up the good work. If your in Calgary look me up and I’ll show you some great riding. Keep up the good work.
Congrats on 100k, its good to see you have the success you have. You nailed it about riding videos being flooded. It doesn't matter where you are riding, even in amazing places, its a riding video, it won't get seen. Trust me. I just gave up on growth, I am making the videos that I want to keep and rewatch in some 20 years. They are just public, and if people watch, they watch. I realized the youtube game and what works, and i have zero interest in doing that. But, I know I'm boring, thanks. Again, congrats Ben, seeing you succeed gives me faith in the youtube world.
100k! Congratulations on this incredible milestone. I’ll be happy when ADV4ME hits 1000 😂. Only 175 to go! In saying this, for me it’s the consistency. That for me is the hardest thing. As a “hobbyist” Fulltime father, Full time Realtor and part time dreamer the time required is a challenge. Regardless of channel subs, at the end of the day, it’s nice to have something to look back at when I’m old and grey! The time alone in editing can be a commitment itself, especially during the learning phase. It’s not difficult to spend 3 hours editing a 15 minute video. Anyways, congratulations on all your accomplishments. Looking forward to more DITR content. Cheers!
Audio is a big one for me. If you can't buy a microphone and I can't hear what your saying I'm out I'll move on to watch one of the other channels I'm subscribed to. Love your content you create and I'm not a ADV rider yet. I have never had audio issues trying to hear you ever. ADV bike is on the list to get and take up ADV riding.
Absolute Congratulations on your success. You have worked your ass off and the recognition is well deserved. In the beginning, it was humorous to see you making so many beginner mistakes. But then at some point you developed the level of skill and speed and knowledge, that made your helmet-cam footage very compelling. It started to give me flashbacks to my dirt bike days - reading the terrain and picking lines right along with you, and alternating between momentum and throttle to negotiate the terrain. So fun to see your growth as a rider and communicator.
It's been a blast to watch as your channel has grown and evolved as well as your riding. It's also interesting to hear what you have learned even though it is basically how to cater to UA-cam to win. That's fine though, it's a job and just like they are out to make money, so are you and you gotta do what you gotta do to win. Keep up the wins Dork!
I appreciate your tips. I started a series of videos recently, mainly for family and friends. I have noticed attention spans are way down(Tiktok effect). I've been making them shorter and smarter. My first videos are exactly as you described. It's hard to figure out what genera I would fit into because I'm all over the place. Dualsport, raised minivan, basecamp, cook, cruise, and my own music in the videos. As to your suggestion, I'll just have to figure things out and be true to what I do, try and make things tighter and keep the riding brief. I have watched you for awhile from two different accounts and like your content, and the thought you have put into it. Thankyou !🏍
Hey man, gotta say i admire u guys who can stop riding to record then spend the additional time editing and everything that goes into this.i am old and technologically challenged and love the ride, couldnt spend the time with vid challenge, dont even snap pictures.i have probably forgot more experiences in 45yrs than most will have but i truly appreciate you crankin vids for my rainy days.nice job.thank you!
Congratulations on 100K! You deserve it. Like some of the other commenters, you come across as honest and direct. You're not pretending to be someone else. I've enjoyed all your videos, even though the content isn't directly applicable to me. You're interesting and provide great information and advice. This video is a good example. This information about UA-cam was very interesting - and I'm not a UA-camr nor do I have any intention of becoming one. I still thought this video was great! Looking forward to watching more.
I have a new channel, 9 videos and 56 subs. The first few videos suck bad, the last three only suck a little. These tips, I believe, will help me out and allow me to grow a bit. Two years from retirement and YT is what will keep me from dying 3 months after I retire. Thank you for this video!!!
Slightly belated, but MUCH deserved congratulations! Been rad watching you for so long, kicking ass. When you first got mentioned on Highside Lowside i felt vicarious pride. You rule man, congratulations.
I can't imagine relying on UA-cam for my income. That would be a stressful and grindy career for me. I'm glad people do it tho. Love watching people enjoy the things they are passionate about. I break all those rules on my channel. I sporadically video me riding on my holidays and swearing and smoking weed and discussing my issues with mental health and being trans...generally just trying to find myself and the things that make me happy. Nothing anyone else is interested in, especially the algorithm but my camera is my riding buddy and I talk to it as I would a friend. I usually only get 20-40 views and nobody watches the whole video but I don't care. It's therapeutic and the process is fun for me. I also don't have a giant box of SD cards and hard drives in my closet with all my memories. They are all organized and easy to live with! Congratulations on your amazing milestone, Dork! I never doubted it would happen. I love watching you do your thing! ❤️👍
Really informative. I’m at the point of deciding which way to go. For the moment I’m sticking with a hobby as I don’t have time. Maybe in a year I’ll up my game. I don’t want to stop enjoying what I do and feel pressurised into working on my hobby. Tough one!
Congrats on the milestone. Bottom line, if you get to that plaque you have earned it. Thanks for running through those tips from your personal perspective. Interestingly in honor of the achievement you are taking the time to give back thoughtfully through this video, it says a lot. Cheers and thank you.
Congrats on 100k! I think you've just reiterated that UA-cam will only ever be a hobby for me. The barriers to entry are low and the motorcycle market is pretty saturated. I still pay attention to UA-cam advice and try to improve a little with each video, but keeping expectations and goals low and doing it primarily for myself helps keep me sane. I'm not really a teacher so "How To" videos don't work for me.......although I could make a tonne of "How Not To" videos! 😂🤔 As always, your videos are loved and appreciated. Cheers!
In watching your channel and many others similar to it, I think being able to laugh at yourself and share a sense of humor is key. No channel is interesting if it’s just education or trying to be inspirational. Whether it’s dry humor, silly slapstick humor, whatever the style, some entertainment along with education is easier to enjoy and consume regularly. You’re genuinely a pretty funny guy when letting it out a bit, so when folks get started, it’s important to me as a consumer to feel a smile coming on. Let’s face it, I’m not zoning out on UA-cam just because I want to feel “educated”. I want to feel a tiny bit of relief from my day for 20-40min. Get comfortable on camera and share yourself, your flaws and your funny bone. Even if your sense of humor is a little “off”, i think so are millions of others’. Those people will identify and be part of your subscriber list. At least that’s part of what I consider in choosing which channel to subscribe to in this genre. PS - EAM is one of the most underrated channels on UA-cam. Stay hairy, Beards!
Congrats on 100K! 🎆🎆Thanks for the tips! Excellent timing. I'm riding from Seattle to Central America next month, and plan on vlogging my journey, mainly so friends and family can keep up with what I'm up to. But also with dreams of being a famous UA-camr like you.😉
You are exactly correct Ben.. I look for reviews on certain products I'm looking to purchase.. and one cannot stand are people that never show who the are and keep a darn helmet on.. I have followed you and Ian at big rock moto for 4 years now because I think the two of are some of the best at reviews on gear parts and motorcycles...thank you for the great work..
Great tips Ben. You were one of the first UA-camrs we started to watch. I admit that I have gotten away from our channel purpose of showing the fun and adventures for our son Bubba J. We hope to grow our channel but we are definitely in this for the hobby of it. You keep working hard and we’ll be here to support you.

I have ZERO intension of making content and watched this. Knowledge is power, and that was a powerful bunch of truthisms.
# 9 a name that no one will ever forget. Someone said “ dork in the road” and I had to look you up ,
Congrats on the 100k.
Congrats on 100k Ben. Hard work deserves recognition! Good job.
You played a big role as I got into ADV bikes this last year. Lots of super helpful content for newbs like myself. Keep it up and thanks for creating!
Thanks for sharing your insights Ben. Great ideas for those that want to make UA-cam work
Don't underestimate how important your genuine and unique character is to your adv and dual sport riding audience. It seems you have figured out the current UA-cam formula - congrats on your success.
What a change from your video last year. Excellent!
Congrats on 100K. I remember when you first started out and I mistakenly thought there's no way you would make it work. I'm glad you suck with it. I'm still trying to hit 10K but I don't put as much time and effort into my channel as you have over the years. Thanks for the video, and here's to the next 100K!
After running my company for 30 years , you are spot on. It is work.. see you when you hit 1 million.
Great advice. Enjoy your channel... congratulations on your 100K subscribers
Congrats! And thank you for this... although I wish you hadn't suggested asking the question "am i boring?" Great stuff as usual...
I think my videos are solid but these tips are illuminating thank you Dork you are a titan of industry from where I am at right now 😎
This is very helpful and inspiring. I just hit 10k yesterday and concur with a lot of points you made. Congratulations on the 100k!
That clip of spilling the camp food is certainly getting a lot of mileage - and rightly so, as it never fails to make me laugh out loud! I'm so proud of your success and very appreciative of your inspiration to get out and ride. Here's to more content and (actually) riding together in the new year!
I started watching you cause you had my 2022 KLR. Taught me how to do my 1st oil change. I stayed because i just liked you. You just do you.
Congrats on the 100k! Its definitely well earned, brotha! Now on to 200k LFG!!👍
Thanks so much for your honest talk. There's very few creators that are transparent, sadly a lot are very disingenuous in their content. THANK YOU! ❤
Congratulations! I'm so happy for you.
Congrats buddy! Super happy for the growth of the channel! You are an absolute legend and keep up the great videos!
Best of luck. I struggle between what I like vs what gets the best response... I just went into a slump over it.
That's the hope! Trying to get back to that new rider perspective as much as possible.
Thank you for this helpful video. I am considering doing something with my channel (it was made to share with friends and family) and I am learning from watching good guys like you.
A very compelling and insightful video into the machinations of UA-cam logarithms.
Excellent work on getting to 100,000 subscribers! (I'm just one of them)
And Mate!
Congrats, brother Dork! Great advice and much appreciated, too! :)
Just subbed hope it helps get your channel out there, the algorithm is not fair. Love the content.
We need to make this video the most viewed of yours! Thanks for ALL your content.
Looking forward to the day I hit 100k, I'm on my way! Thanks for the video Dork :)
Congratulations on a 100k, and thanks for making this great points that i wrote down to keep in mind when im trying to make videos
You are the everyday people that everyone can relate to, at least that's how I see it why I enjoy watching your videos.
Congrat's on 100K subs dork. I've been onboard for a long while now. Keep up the good work.
That was incredibly interesting. Virtually a day long seminar completed in 17 mins. Way to go.👍👍👍👍👍
It's been a blast to watch as your channel has grown and evolved as well as your riding. It's also interesting to hear what you have learned even though it is basically how to cater to UA-cam to win. That's fine though, it's a job and just like they are out to make money, so are you and you gotta do what you gotta do to win. Keep up the wins Dork!
@10:05 is the Big Rock Moto filter on??? J/k. Ian is great, but the tire line just got me... Ben sounds just like him!
Thankyou !🏍
Great video, but a real kick in the gut. Thanks for watching my channel, you described it exactly.
Good advice and insights...we'll just keep plugging away.
awesome vid! best youtube channel advice out there! thank you, and congrats on 100,000!
This is a great video and brings out the best of you. 100k subscribers is well deserved
Love all the tips in the video! Such great lessons for us creators trying to grow. Thanks for sharing! 🙌🏼
Thanks! Thats really great info
Excellent stuff Dork! Thank you
Great advice....this video should be required watching for wannabe and successful UA-camrs alike
Thanks for the real talk! Needed this today. Congrats on the 100k !!!
Fantastic advice for all aspects of life in content creation and beyond. Great channel
Congrats Ben, along for the next 100k for sure!
#9 Good camera skills and editing. Properly frame the picture, no shaky cam or panning back and fourth quickly. Your videos are well done.
Great wake up call. Its always worthwhile re-evaluating strategy.
Thanks mate, some great advice which I will use. Cheers from Australia.
