  • We react to this new historical fiction series made by Hulu and FX that takes place in Japan in the 1600s based on a famous book. We follow an English sailor named Blackthorne who loses himself and his ship to a Japanese lord named Toranaga.
    Enjoy the video! 💫

The actor who is playing lord Toranaga (Hiroyuki Sanada) was also a producer for this show. He insisted on making this series as close to reality as possible. There were a lot of Japanese consultants on the set: they taught actors how to fight in samurai style, how to walk (this characteristic "gliding" that you can see in Mariko's walk), and other things. They also speak old Japanese :)

Great reactions. I read that the people involved with putting this show together did a great deal of research to get every detail they could as accurate to the feudal period of Japan as possible. Even the Japanese language was revised to make it the same as was spoken back then. In effect, the Japanese actors had to learn the language as spoken then.

If you're interested in a more modern setting, there's a recently-concluded two season Max series, "Tokyo Vice." Probably not for reacting, but worth seeing in general. Strange pacing and some odd characterizations, but fascinating environment. About the yakuza.

Interesting I heard about this series when watching the first episode of Season 1. I'll probably check it out.

When they're speaking Japanese, it's Japanese. When anyone other than Blackthorne or his crew speaks English, it's Portuguese. When Blackthorne speaks English to anyone other than his crew or himself, it's Portuguese. When he mumbles expletives and insults, it's actually English in-world. lol

Just a small correction: he speaks dutch to his crew (he's the only englishman in the crew) and spanish to rodriguez and the priest in prison in ep2. I think he also speaks a bit of latin but I might be remembering wrong. Either way, he's a smart guy as were all skilled navigators at the time.

@@Andrei2patrU I haven't read the book, but the show makes it seem very much like it's an English crew on a Crown mission that just has Dutch papers for cover.

from the show - later episodes: Blackthorne "sailed from Amsterdam" aboard the Erasmus (dutch name) with "letters of marque from a nation called Holland" and is called out for having ambitions to be the first Englishman to the Japans

Did they change the ridiculous romance between the foreigner and the married woman?

I think it did a good job of creating extra tension.
