  • This is a tour of our small scale cattle farm and I show how we raise our beef steers on only 1 acre. I show the pasture layout, how we did our fence, inside their barn area, what the get for feed, the steers we picked out and how I take care of them every day. At the end theirs a couple little updates. The bok choy and lettuce went into the Desktop NFT System for round two. Hope you like this one, and let me know what you think.

    I started about 5 years ago with beef cattle. Owning a horse ranch I had some extra space and figured I’d give it a shot. I bought 2 Angus bottle calves and that was short lived, so after that I took time to study more. I had a friend with a registered organic Holstein dairy farm and he had one of his cows bred to a registered Angus bull, that produced an all black bull calf. Just about 3 months prior to this I had traded a horse for 2 purebred Hereford heifers. So me and my buddy worked out a deal on a goal for the calf and some hay. I brought the little bull home which ended up being his name although he wasn’t little for long lol. He has been doing his job producing really nice calves and he is the most gentle bull I’ve met. He has got out plenty of times to go introduce himself to the ladies down the road but other then that he’s been great.

      Thats is awesome! My parents started out picking up Holstein bull cafes cheap from the dairy farm the transitioned to Herefords. We love them and that's all my parents have now. George the bull is still gentle. He scares me but just because he is over 2000 pounds lol

    Great video, those bulbs are prolly not even giving half the lumens you need for lettuce, why it's so leggy. You could tray mixing color on that setup and switching one of the bulbs to a red flowering bulb but I'm not sure that would work very well either. Lettuce grows better with the red or purple spectrum, it's a cool weather plant.

The upside is they need a lot less food, water, and room.

      We make enough on the beef to pay for ours (free) and enough to cover the cost of feed, hay, butchering etc. We do make money off beef just selling to friends and family

    • @HomegrownPassion

      Our operation is grass fed....no feed...so we rotate pastures....and feed hay we make on the farm in the winter...not sure on exact cost but we make money cattle!

    I don't understand people raising 4 steers on an acre. Us folks from the South would never think of doing it. Then again we have a lot more land for cattle to graze. To each their own. God Bless

      It's interesting to see different perspectives on cattle farming practices! Since these guys were all grain fed it is possible. I wish I had more land for my steers. Mom and Dad have large pastures and grow their own hay so I know what you mean. Just wanted to try and see if I could do it.

    Instead of a electrical wire would a strip of barbed wire work as well?

    • @HomegrownPassion
      @HomegrownPassion  3 роки тому

      We've always found they are less likely to mess with the fence if it is electrified. They won't touch any part of it. But if you do electric barbed wire, that would work great.
