I've said it before, but I will say it again. WOW! Thanks for your time and generosity. I really needed to watch the video to discover how to use then though LOL.
Another awesome tutorial! You teach things that I can't find anywhere else. You teach things I wouldn't have thought of! You do such an awesome job. Thank you for your tutorials and also for the macros!!
You give so many great, really helpful tutorials, Dave. I've just downloaded the luminosity selection and spent a couple of minutes playing with them- looks like they will be extremely useful. Thanks so much for the time and effort that you put in to this channel. It's really appreciated.
This is EXCEPTIONAL creativity, insight and teaching! I learned of it from a Facebook "Affinity Photo - Tutorials" page post. This also gives me the chance (forces me?) to dig into using the Library and Macros.
This is brilliant. I've been quite jealous of the relatively new range mask slider in Adobe but this looks like it could be a great alternative. Thank you.
Great stuff, I use your Zone system macros and overlays but have struggled doing luminosity masks using spare channels etc. This looks like it will be much simpler. Many thanks. Mind you, I do think Affinity should have built this in as standard.
Hello again. So I've watched and rewatched several times trying to sort out what you are doing. At 8:40 or so you add a curves adjustment, and Affinity treats it as a CHILD layer. When I add it, it shows up as the top layer (AP 1.10.5 MacBook). Any ideas why? Second question: procedural text layers are added in the mask position. Do they function as an alpha channel mask for visibility? Third, comment, I have been looking at an underwater photo with dappled light probably as a result of water surface irregularities. It is hard to see the dappling until I get the midpoint of the select luminosity filter just right, and then it is so obvious. I am enjoying learning. Your math background and creativity are on show here. Do you use some editor to code your equations, then copy and paste? Thanks in advance for any insight. regards - - john
Click on the 'i' at the top to change how adjustments and filters are added, as new layers or as child layers. PT sets the values for R, G, B and/or A (alpha = opacity). You can hence adjust both colour and transparency. I code using Excel, with each statement on a new line, then concatenate them all to one cell to cut/paste to AP. It's not perfect but it's way better than trying to do many 'lines of code' just in AP.
Hello dear sir. Your tutorials are remarkable and your macros are excellent too. Are your zone system selections identical to your luminosity mask selections ? Because the selections of luminosity levels and the selections of the zone system of Ansel Adams seem to be the same selections. So, the selections generated by your macros for the zone system, are they identical to the selections generated by your macros of luminosity masks ? In other words, can we use the system zone selections on color photos, exactly as we use the luminosity mask selections on color photos too ? Thank you very much dear sir for your answers, and thank you very much for all your knowledge in the field of photography.
Yes, the Luminosity macros use very similar code as compared with the Zone System, and indeed are more flexible. The Zone macros are useful if you want to follow the fixed zones as per the Adams approach. The Luminosity macros are for when you want to narrow into a particular part of the image.
Hi there, today I have tried to use this macros on Mac M1. Every thing looks like is working fine, but sliders are not there. Is anything I can do to fix this? Thanks in advance!!
Many thanks for the video and free macros. However when I run the macro and add a mask, you mention in the video that you use the paint brush tool and set to black to remove unwanted selections. However, when I attempt this, the brush paints on black and I can only remove areas of the image using white. I am not sure why this is so. Appreciate your comments
If you're getting black when you paint, it looks like you could be painting on the original pixel image, not the mask (where painting black simply removes the masked layer effect).
@@inaffinityforaffinityphoto3220 many thanks for your prompt response; can't seem to be able to send you a screen grab but I have followed your steps exactly from what I can see. After I add the mask, I highlight that mask layer only and use the paint brush set to black. In this scenario it does not remove at all. If I highlight the whole layer comprising Luminosity Zone, Mask and Select Zone (nested as shown in the video) a black paint brush paints black
Painting black on a mask only changes the image if it is effectively white or grey. Another thought is to check the opacity of the brush you are using - if it is small you may be having a little effect. Try also Alt-clicking the mask so you can see exactly where it is black and white.
I dont know if you know this but on the affinity forum there are some very excellent macros for luminosity masks for both pixel layers and for adjustment layers. They are in the resources tab. you might check these out also. I think using the procedural texture filter gives you more real time control. Definitely interesting. I have to try these in the LAB color space. Thanks for your work.
I'll look again at the forum - thanks, Hans. Interested too to see how thing turn out with LAB. It's an interesting area where I feel I could learn more.
I've tested the link -- it goes to the resources page. I've changed this link now so it goes directly to the download page: changingminds.org/disciplines/photography/affinity_photo/resources/daves_luminosity_selection.htm
@@inaffinityforaffinityphoto3220 I had a go yesterday. The processing power needed far exceeded my machine's capacity - steam was coming out of the USB ports!! But I think it would work.
Hi Dave. Many thanks not only for the free macros, but also all of your excellent Affinity based videos which I find very helpful. I am sorry to be a pain but, despite upgrades, my 12 year old desktop is struggling to do any kind of justice to Affinity. It really struggles with all but the basic tasks. In your opinion, what would be the spec of PC/Laptop I would need to purchase to take full advantage of Affinity? Whilst I am only an amateur photographer, I would rather buy a decent spec machine with some degree of "future proofing". Again I apologies for bothering you, but I can't think of anyone better placed to help than your good self. Kind regards - Robin
Hi Robin. Don't know where you are in the world. I'm in the UK and get mine from Chillblast. They are super-helpful on the phone and will custom build to your budget and needs (or suggest one of their off-the-shelf solutions). Basically you want as fast a machine as possible. Another possibility if you are particularly non-technical is simply to go to a local computer shop and ask for help there. Overall, you're looking for a fast processor, good amount of RAM, decent graphics card and good monitor (or two).
@@inaffinityforaffinityphoto3220 Very many thanks Dave. I am based in the UK so will contact your suggested suppliers. Thanks again also for your vlogs which I find to be clearly explained and not too long. Best regards - Robin
I have a issue. I’m working in 16 bit color. When I export in jpg I’m getting banding in my sky. When I export in tiff 16 bit it’s perfect. Is there a way to stop that and get rid of the banding in the jpgs? I have dealt with a lot of photos and this has been the first i have noticed. Thanks o ton.
Have you tried all the different export formats, including the Resample options? I mostly use Lanczos 3 Separable. Also ensure Quality is 100%. Also try changing bit depth before you export (Document/Convert), checking there for banding.
InAffinity for Affinity Photo I tried all that with same results. I ended up adding a noise layer and only adding 1%. Then I turned down opacity to 10% and they seem to be gone now. 🤔
It may help them if you post the photo too, preferably before/after. I used to be a programmer and the trickiest bugs were ones you couldn't reproduce.
How about: 'Dave's Super Luminosity Controls'?...seems like you didn't forget that luminosity request after all, Thank you! --- I do need another dose of focus power to stimulate my math brain...
