  • INFO ADDED! After a conversation with a tech, I've been informed three sensors exist. One being a crank case barometric sensor and two temp sensors. This is how the ecu sorts out fueling map. If you made it through the 38 minutes, God bless you and thanks for watching!

    Most of my Stihls are old but everyday they want to go to work. I hope these new guys follow that tradition. Thanks for showing us what's inside these little saws!

    I was stumped about no air injection as well. Apparently air injection robs cooling air from going across the cylinder and Stihl was worried about heat issues with the 500. It is also possible that Stihl has been sitting on this design for quite a while at this point, maybe since the chop saw came out.

    Stihl has had this design on the shelf for awhile since the TS500i came out, I work at a dealer in va and we recently had our stihl school and they had tons of these saws in there test room and I was talking with the service rep and he said they’ve had 1000s of hours on these with little issues. The only thing we’ve heard of is people tearing the wires with the ecu

      Any info on the air filter and how it performs? It seems to be the old style used on the 260/461 etc, not the newer twist-lock HD2 filters. Always had trouble with fine dust passing around the pressure-lock on those older ones, even when putting a bit of grease to help it seal better. The filters are amazing on the 261/362/462, I really don't get it why Stihl went with this older design for it...

    first time I've seen a fuel injected chainsaw. Thought the husky 545 550xp etc were the spaceship chainsaw, alien tech (where's the carb adjustment?) but now fuel injected! "this is my second day of owning this saw" love it!

    Do you think that the small port design at the inlet to the transfers is more for creating a stronger impulse to run the injection pump than anything else?
    I have a logger friend bringing me a 500i to look over soon.

    I seen people say the 500i has good torque. I wonder if it is the timing?

    That small exhaust port increases torque? Can't think of any other reason. 🤔

    the butterfly lets it know where the air is at thus the tps

      @@mweba1 Thanks for the reply , I have wood thats been on the ground for awhile (boiler wood) & this particular 80cc saw . My question, in the video , you didn't get into (discussion) the clutch or any drive comparisons . Just wondering which direction to go for a rim sprocket (.404 7th) . Thanks .

      Well, that's a tough one. I run mostly Husqvarna due to my relationship with the dealer. Have an excellent one locally. For modern saws, I have far more hours on my modified 562xp than any other, tend to grab it for the shear utility of it. Also a sucker for the Dolmar 7900, they are just a freak stock but this new Echo 7310 will likely be my go to 70cc saw. You'll see why in my video upload tomorrow... Favorite saw for me to run is the Dolmar KMS-4 for vintage. Not much of a straight answer but I'm not brand loyal.

      @@bombidude Nothing wrong with that. Try a commercial Dolmar/Makita if you get a chance. Very similar feel to husky.

    Do you think a max flow filter for a 661 would work on the 500i?

      Yeah, I just want to figure something out better than the factory setup because it’s far from the best filtration setup out there.

      I've done a couple now. They respond well to modifications and computer doesn't skip a beat.

      Yep. Easier to work on than a 441 but that's about it.

    Nice tear down Mitch. Well seems like a gimmicky saw, not impressed with that crank.. looks puny, plastic cage bearings🙈.Puny flywheel and small ports intake and exhaust thats why it revs so fast. Muffler is fairly open, what I don't understand is how are they keeping the emmisions under control yet seems to be juicy🤔....I thought maybe small tank but that's not the case. if the injection is so precise at the combustion stage it should be more efficient surely🤷‍♂️. be curious to what longevity is going to be like. Can see why its so light. you pay more for less🤣

      It was an issue while rendering the video, I tried three times with two different programs. The raw file off camera doesn't show any issue but after editing... Nothing I could do.

      I wish I knew of a way to help you with this, because the content of your video including your teardown and expertise is next to none. I'm really mad that the rendering is reducing the quality of an otherwise top notch piece of information for those of us wanting to learn about the inner workings of this saw. Also, if you do any more similar videos, try to either zoom or bring the parts closer to the camera so that what we're looking at fills more of the frame of the video. If autofocus doesn't cooperate, put your hand behind the object so that the camera doesn't try to focus on things in the background. Otherwise I absolutely love what you are doing here. It is extremely informative and detailed without being stretched too long considering how much there is to demonstrate. I'm very appreciative of what you're doing here. Personally I've only run my new 500i through around 15-20 trees and like it. Full of liquids, it is less than a pound heavier than my 362 CMQ when that is full of liquids, both without bar and chain, despite being 20cc bigger. I had to buy the 500i without a bar/chain due to a global shortage of light bars, so I'm still using older bars for now. Also had to buy standard wrap and waiting for full wrap handle that's on order due to the shortage. I agree that you need to pull the starter rope surprisingly HARD even with the decompression on this saw. Not sure why. Also, I wish more models had the quick stop feature of my 362 cmQ. As far as I know, the 500i can't have it. You start depending on it stopping your chain without having to use the left wrist or right palm on the traditional chain brake. That feature is insanely helpful when limbing and cutting through brush, especially when you're wrestling through brush. On this new saw, I like how easy the housing covers are to take off and put back on compared to older saws that get stuck in the chain brake shield.

    Pretty sure they went ahead and pulled one of the engineers at S1 military base to use some of that reversed engineered aircraft skills to engineer something cool like this. 🤣🤙🤙
