I was a commercial fisherman fishing out of Kodiak Alaska for a number of years. We called these guys "the coasties". I have to say that I have the utmost respect for them because when a boat is in trouble they risk their lives to save whoever they can.
The Guard has come so far since my time at the Air Detachment..1964 & '65 . It was a NAS at the time and we had only one Hanger. Four HU-16s, one C-123 and a Bell-47 that the pilots would "try" to fly every now and then . We experienced the "Good Friday " 1964 Earthquake and Tsunami. I was stationed at USCG AIRDET Kodiak from January1963 until July 1964. The Navy maintained its ASW operations during this period; P2Vs and P3As. We "enjoyed" the "Good Friday" Earthquake in '64. I worked toward my Aviation Ordnance Rating(evolved into the "Rescue Swimmer" program. We maintained four HU-16Gs and a C-123...no Choppers. Jim(TEX) Hawkins
The only job more bad ass than a commercial fisherman is the rescue swimmers who save us. I have fished out of both Kodiak and Dutch Harbor.I haven't needed to be saved yet but know people who were and a few that were never found. Thanks Coasties.
