The BEST ad I have EVER seen on UA-cam! Incredible - had me howling!! I normally skip through ads. Loved this whole video!
I normally skip the ad portions, but I couldn’t even think to miss this masterpiece.
I think Elizabeth and Elizabeth may be new recurring characters on my channel 😂
@@GavinReadsItAll that would be amazing , that ad made me laugh so much , thank you x
I am here for more Elizabeth and Elizabeth- you are a genius, I want you to have more adds so we get more sketches! (Your book of the month was also epic)
That plot twist at the beginning… I NEED TO KNOW MORE! Does Elizabeth go to France? Does she learn French? 🤯
To be continued… 😱
I believe Pride and Prejudice was initially named First Impressions.. which would also have been a great title! Darcy and Elizabeth are just the OG Enemies to Lovers!
Yes that's so true about the title
You know it’s gonna be a good day when Gavin whips out the costumes 🔥
💁🏼♀️
“I never thought I’d like a fanny, but I love this Fanny” 💀💀🤣🤣
Persuasian is my favorite Austen novel. It's not most lighthearted Austen novel and Anne is not the spunky heroine but it's the most well-written. She did such an amazing job of a slow burn bleak romance novel where you don't actually know if they're going to forgive each other and are so happy with the ending.
I would LOVE to see a Brontë sisters reading vlog 👀 I adore long vlog videos like this !!
A lot of what Austen writes about is taken from experiences she had in her life, for example she had a really wealthy brother who didn’t help Jane, her sister or mother for years after their father died, and they live in poverty for years because his wife didn’t want him to help them! A bit like sense and sensibility 😊
Brandon from S&S is one of my favourite book boyfriends of all time! I also love Alan Rickman as him in the movie.
Underrated adaptation of Emma is the BBC mini series with Ramola Garai!!! 💓
Persuasion is one of my favourite books of all time, but I've never heard of anyone (including me) retaining any of the contents on first read-through and I like to think it's a metaphor for second chances 😂
Austen is my favourite classic writer. It's been over 15 years when I binged all Austen novels. This vlog gave me life. P&P and Persuasion are my favourites and Mansfield Park my least favourite. P&P mini series with Jennifer Ehle and Colin Firth is my all time favourite series.
"She stopped writing it for some reason." Yeah, she died.
Oh I was talking about The Watsons at that point right? Which she wrote in 1803 and suddenly stopped (she died 1817), though people theorise she stopped writing The Watsons because her father died.
@@GavinReadsItAll ohhh ok, i knew that at one point she stopped writing due to illness, thanks for ironing that out for me. I had no idea her father died.
@@GavinReadsItAll sorry if i came across as a smart ass lol
Pride and Prejudice is my all time favorite. The relationships and characters, the romance and the bromance! I think it's so funny. I laugh every time I read it. :) But to each their own, you are allowed to have your own opinion. I'm just so happy that you read them all and enjoyed them even if our rankings are different. My top is P&P, my second and third constantly change between Persuasion and Northanger Abbey, then Emma, Sense & Sensibility, and Mansfield Park. Although the first time I read Emma I gave it 3 stars, the second time I gave it 5. I think they just get better and better on rereads and I've only read S&S and Mansfield once.
At least we both appreciate Northanger Abbey ❤I think I need to re-read pride and prejudice in maybe a year or two as I feel I may enjoy it more on a re-read
@@GavinReadsItAll Northanger Abbey was the first Austen book I read so I'll always have a soft spot for it!
It is criminal how good this vlog is and I'm only at the Babel ad 💀♥️
All of the Fanny bits had me in stitches 😂
Also the new haircut!!! I love it
“Yet I managed to pass that class.”, said Gavin as they took a well timed sip from a cup. Truly icon behaviour!
💁♀
The way you were so excited talking about Sense & Sensibility brought me joy. It's my favorite Austen and I feel like it gets minimal attention and love. This entire vlog has been a pleasure. Since we have now added classics to this series.... I wonder how you would do with The Bronte sisters? Jane Eyre, Wiuhering Heights and Tenant of Wildfelll Hall? No? Too far? LMAO
Sense and Sensibility does tend to get overlooked. I think it has the best adaptations too.
And I would pay good money to see Gavin wandering the Yorkshire moors.
It's been 8 years since I read Jane Eyre so I am due a re-read cause I've pretty much forgotten all of it (like Persuasion), so a Bronte sisters vlog, where I pit them against each other and see who wrote the best book, would be very interesting 👀
I love Fanny Price from Mansfield Park she’s just so underrated as a character from Jane Austen’s repertoire
Agree 😊
Jane Austen was everything in my teenager years!! I miss reading her books. I wanted to find some good biography of her life. She had a very tragic and "romanceable" life, she never married but she had an engagement when she was young that didn't end well... She died fairly young (in her 40's I think), in poverty. That's kind sad. I think her romances were popular before her death... anyway, I remember watching a movie slightly inspired by her life called Becoming Jane, with Anne Hathaway.
Most of my favorite adaptations are the BBC ones.. to be fair though they do have more time to flesh things out and take more from the books.
Loved this!
I had a hard time reading Pride and Predjudice for the first time. I just couldnt keep the characters straight. After I watched the BBC mini series I was finally able to read and enjoy it. That naturally led to the others.
Persuasion is my comfort book. Sense and Sensibility is my second fave. Emma has grown on me. I've only read Mansfield Park and Northanger Abbey once so I dont remember much about them. I think I'm due for a reread of those two.
Pride and Predjudice and zombies and Sense and sensibility and sea monsters are interesting reads if you aren't a purist when it comes to classics.
Austenland, book and movie, are really fun too.
I think a lot of the adaptaions or reworkings of Pride and Prejudice really play down Elizabeth's pride/prejudice in the story, and I think they lose something for it. It's the growth and learning on both sides that really sells the love between them. But people seem to love pointing out all Darcy's flaws, but forgiving Elizabeth's without much thought, cheaping the whole story.
✨Sense and sensibility clashed with my personality so painfully that I couldn't enjoy it. The writing style is good but that much gossip and rotten social interactions was a real torture.
✨I think pride and prejudice is even better on a 2nd read. Because, you start to notice some relevant details and end up thinking that Mr Darcy is actually more socially awkward than prideful. Also, by the end of the story, there is more actual romantic interactions than just finalizing this contract of marriage.
✨Lady Susan is so scandalous 😂
My fav Jane Austen book was Persuasion. And if you want to see an absolutely wonderful movie adaptation check out the BBC film with Ciaran Hinds and Amanda Root. The heat between them is visible in many scenes….and so much said with the eyes! My go to film for Valentines Day.💜
Oooo thanks for the recommendation!
Omg the sponsored ad read at the beginning!!! 🙌 Gavin!!! How are you so iconic all the time???? I love it 😍
Haha thanks Gabby 🥰
51:10 Miss Taylor and Mr. Weston. They shared umbrellas, remember?
This was absolutely delightful! I'm so glad you enjoyed Northanger Abbey so much; it was definitely my favorite Austen growing up and it's so underrated. Also, I really recommend watching the film version of Lady Susan, called Love & Friendship. It is witty and is not in letter format, so you might like it more.
I believe that it is theorized that Jane Austen didn't finish The Watsons because her father died while she was writing it. I think she told someone how she wanted to finish the book though, so unlike Sanditon, the end of the story exists, at least in theory.
Also, please watch the BBC version of Pride and Prejudice with Colin Firth (swoon) honestly the man of my dreams 💛✨
Such a good adaptation.
Persuasion is my favorite book of all time! I’m too scared to watch the new movie.
Maybe skip the new movie... 😂
@@GavinReadsItAll will do😀
While I still need to read a couple of Austin's novels- my favorite by far is Persuasion, I read it almost yearly and the 1995 movie is 1000x better than the new movie that came out this summer. As always you are a delight!
Nobody does sponsorships like Gavin! I will definitely be checking Babbel out! I’m also totally inspired to read more Jane Austen 😁💙💙💙
I NEED you to watch an adaptation per book. And watch the Pride and Prejudice 2005 version. If you don’t love Darcy after that, I will be SHOCKED! 🥰
Reading Northanger Abbey made me want to pick up Ann Radcliffes books. I agree that P&P is a slow start but i do love how the relationship grows. Yes please do a video reading the 7 books mentioned in Northanger Abbey
LOL, Gavin your Babbel commercial is the best 🤣totally made my morning. So glad you got to dive into the Jane Austen world 📚
Persuasion is my favourite Jane Austen ! But same, I didn’t enjoy the most recent movie adaptation 😞
Persuasion is so sublime, but you have to read it slowly and really savor her biting sarcasm.
I hardly ever watch the sponsored portion of a video unless it's entertaining and yours was hands down THE BEST!!!! 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
You are just so creative, Gavin! So glad I found your channel! 🖤
of her full length novels, the only one i have yet to read is northanger abbey. so far my favorite remains pride and prejudice. but i do love mansfield park a lot, tbh i find it to be her funniest novel, especially the whole sequence where they put on lover's vows LOL. i believe someone completed sanditon based off of austen's brief start, which is great because the beginning seemed so promising
Tilney is my favourite and no-one I know agrees with me 😂 Darcy can stay in that lake for all I care, I'm going muslin and ribbon shopping with Henry! ❤
I love you slagging off John 😂 he's so dumb but thinks he's so smart and fancy 😂😂 he reminds me of so many actual men I've had to suffer through conversations with 🙃
Persuasion is such a mature novel. I feel like some of her other heroines would have been ok if they hadn’t married, Elinor had Marianne to support her and agency in her home, Emma ran both her home and Highbury pretty much, Elizabeth is very good natured but determined so would have spent as much time with Jane as possible but Anne has no agency, her family are dreadful and she has no options to live a different life.
Emma is my favorite too. The 2020 Emma film is a masterpiece 😍 great vlog!
"Mrs. Norris.... she's a cow" YOU COULDA SAID CATTTT. GAVVVV
Absolutely LOVE how into these you were - really came across in the commentary!
The ad had me rolling 😂 you and your videos make me so happy! 🥰
I did indeed read Mansfield Park for Uni and agree with you. It was a bit dragging, but worth it in the end. Also this vlog really motivated me to read more Jane Austen, because I have some still to read on my shelves.
I think I've read Mansfield Park more than any other Jane Austen book! Even though Fanny isn't the kind if heroine I usually like or can relate to. But she's so well written and fleshed out in the story and I really love all the drama and scandal that takes place in Mansfield Park! I enjoy seeing her grow up from a child and also getting a glimpse of a lower class than usually shown in Jane Austen novels when she visits her family.
Fanny makes me sob every time I read Mansfield Park because how well written she is and how kind she is to people who don't deserve her kindness.
Oh my gosh! That ad was perfection! I could not stop smiling! 🖤
Halfway through watching and you're making me want to read them all again! 💙
This was amazing! I say YES to putting this king of effort into your videos. Congratulations! ❤️
Okay, this is definitely making me want to reread them all back to back and sort out my own ratings. Loved this!
I'm living or the polished Gav at the end, and this has definitely pushed Emma up my tbr!
You put this out so quickly, you absolute legend. Also, you have been KILLING the ads lately lmao
Ahh this was fantastic ! I really love your long form videos, they are always the highlight of the day ! I really need to get round to reading more Austen, but I adored Sense and Sensibility when I read it. Also those editions are stunning, might need to go hunt them out.
I watched this all in one going because of course. I've seen some pretty good ads but this is some top tier level shit up in here. I own Northanger Abbey because I also wrote several essays and spent a large time at university studying gothic literature and it's so far the only Austen novel I've read but I absolutely love it and was SO happy to see how giddy you were over it.
The ad 😂 loved the video!! It was super interesting and I also really enjoyed discovering about your dissertation! Im really curious about Northanger Abbey now :)
YOUR BABBEL AD OMG!!!!!!!!! Yes!!!!!
I fucking love you! Your creative genius is unmatched. You really make me want to join Babbel 😉
That was the best sponsor ad I have ever seen!
Your excitement over Jane Austen has made me want to finally dive into them. I’ve been interested in Northanger Abbey, but you have made it sound like something I will love. Can’t wait to read Austen! Wonderful video and concept as always, Gavin!! I’d love to the seven gothic novels from Northanger Abbey vlog!
You put so much work into your content, I am currently watching the ad. I love Austen so prepare for an avalanche of comments as I make my way through this whole video.
Thank you 🥰
This is my favourite video of yours!! 🥰 It's making me desperate to read the Austen books I haven't yet read.
Do it!! And let me know if you end up with the same thoughts as me on them
OMG! This video made me want to reread all these books! Loved it! My #1 will always be Pride & Prejudice. I love Lizzie & Darcy. Also, S&S is great and Fanny is an awesome character
The add was amazing loved it ❤️ and I love the movies! Really need to read the books I've only read Northanger Abby and really liked it. Might read and then rewatch the movies after like you did.
Listening to you talk about all of Austen’s novels is making me want to read them all again. Except Persuasion, because I just finished that one. Persuasion is my favorite. I love a good second chance romance.
Thank you for being so thorough with your thoughts and opinions on these lovely novels. I love that you actually cited and quoted passages directly from the books.
Also, I died laughing when you asked your cat if he ordered McDonald’s while you were in Ipswich! 😂
I'm a Sense & Sensibility girl myself. So glad to see you liked it! :D
The Italian by Ann Radcliffe is one of my top 3 favorite classics! I knew Gav had great taste! 😉
Gavin your ads are always top tier entertaining 👏🏾👏🏾
I ABSOLUTELY loved this video!!💖
I’m loving watching you enjoy Jane Austen, I love Jane Austen so much! Sense and Sensibility is my favourite and I absolutely love the movie with Emma Thompson, I’m only halfway through the video, so I don’t know if you watched it but I can’t wait to hear what you think of it, one of my favourite movies of all time!
Excellent vlog! You make everything so fun and I love Austen. Have been so excited for this. I skipped a few because I have not read them yet or seen any adaptations. Trying to avoid spoilers. I really love the novel Emma too, and see the character growth in her that you do. I think Emma and Pride and Prejudice are my favorites of the ones I have read. The one I am most excited to read next is Northanger Abbey. I love gothic lit and I can imagine how well Austen would satirize it and how fun it would be. Also, how rude of Ash and Nobu to expose your McDonald's like that. Kids these days. LOL.
If you want to extend the Jane Austen experience I would recommend First Impressions by Charlie Lovett. This combines intrigue, romance, books as valuable objects, and of course, Jane Austen. I also loved The Bookman’s Tale by him as well.
Kate Beckinsale portrayed Lady Susan fabulously!!!! In an Amazon movie (maybe Disney?) amazing, if you enjoyed Austen’s draft, you’ll love the TV movie 😊
You resuming Sense & Sensibility was a hoot🤣
Persuasion is my favourite, but I also absolutely adore Northanger Abbey because I also love Gothic fiction. I never hear anyone mention Ann Radcliffe, that was such a nice surprise in this video! If you havent already, you have to read Sheridan Le Fanu, especially Carmilla (lesbian vampire that predates Dracula).
I saw the bbc adaptation of pride and prejudice and I loved it every single time I saw mr.Darcy I would just go ☺️ I loved it so much I haven’t read the book yet but hopefully soon. Thank you soooo much for this reading vlog I loved it 🥰
The intro was hilarious as usual 😂 I've only read Pride and Prejudice and I really enjoyed it, though I agree it was a bit boring. But that means I might enjoy the others even more! Can't wait to read them all, maybe next year 👀 another gorgeous video, Gavin, thank you! 💜
Much love Gavin. Commenting so the algorithm is kind to you
Thank you James, I appreciate that 😊
Yes! Please read the books mentioned in Northanger Abby, I wondered if they were real books when I read it. If they are worth the read I'll read them too.😄
I haven't watched the rest of the video yet but that ad was 💯
My ranking of Jane Austen's novels is actually the exact same as yours! I rarely see anyone put Emma, Northanger Abbey, and Sense & Sensibility as their top three so this is making me feel very validated. I love all of Jane Austen's works (I haven't yet read the unfinished novels tho) but I just tend to prefer her funnier novels (even tho there's humour in all of them of course). Really enjoyed this video and didn't even realise how long it was. I could've listened to you gush about these books for even longer :)
This is exactly as spicy as I'd hoped ! Also made me want to read Austen I haven't
Love the lights on ur bookcases! 🥰
I have gone all out on the fairy lights haven't I haha
@@GavinReadsItAll ....I may need to do the same....
Yes to everything you said about Northanger Abbey! I read it for the first time two years ago and absolutely loved the characters, the romance, and the dramatic plot commenting on the gothic genre. I know for most people it’s their least favorite, but I think it is a truly brilliant and engaging novel.
Yay I am so glad you love it as much as me!!
The adddddd. Impeccable
Thank you so much for sharing your impressions and tastes in that excellent video (of course my ranking is very different).
Pleeease, when will you do the same with the adaptations ? 🙏
This was so much fun! Would you ever consider going to Chatsworth and re-reading her books again, or perhaps reading her contemporaries' work? :)
Your library is so beautiful!!!
Thank you so much ❤️
Let me start with saying that I love that you sing in pretty much every one of your videos!!
I was curious as to what your thoughts were going to be on Pride & Prejudice. It’s the only Jane Austin book I’ve read so far, but this video has fueled me to read the other books that I have that are just sitting and waiting to be read. I appreciate all of your thoughts and analyses of these books (and all books)!! I personally loved Pride & Prejudice the first 3 times I read it, but it’s awhile I’m much older now, so I bet I’ll have a different take on it this go around. Love your videos as always 💙💙💙
Persuasion is my FAVORITE Jane Austin book. I tired watching the Netflix movie and had to stop after 15 minutes. I was so sad how they ruined the story!
I read Pride and Prejudice a few years ago and didn't enjoy it, but after your discussion, I think I need to give it another chance!
I’m just amazed by your content! ❤
So happy to hear someone else appreciate Northanger Abbey!
Lol that intro made me laugh to much that was great 😂
I enjoyed this video so much. Your passion for gothic literature is great would definitely be into more gothic literature reading vlogs.
My personal Austen rankings.
1. Pride and Prejudice
2. Persuasion
3. Northanger Abbey
4. Emma
But honestly I enjoy them all a lot - Emma is still a four star read. I like the S&S movie adaptation but uh have DNfed the book. I might go back one day! And I’m not sure I am interested enough to read Mansfield Park, but maybe.
I love Pride and Prejudice but I'm so glad you ranked this honestly. Sometimes when people put books like this as number 1, it feels like it's because it's expected/the most popular (I've also seen this for things like 'the top 10 Queen songs' etc). I've read about half the Austen books so will definitely check out Emma and Northanger Abby
Love your video! I would love for you to do this with the bronte sisters novels too! ❤
I’m absolutely planning on doing the Brontë sisters this year 😉
@@GavinReadsItAll yay!! I look forward to your bronte video. I love jane Austen and this video was literally everything!! I love all of the imput and time you gave to each noveI can only imagine how hard it was to edit it. So i want to say thank you so much for that. Also if it's not much to request, I'd also love for you to go in depth with northanger abbey and the Gothic novels covered there and their similarities and ties analysis when you can! Especially with your expertise in gothic novels it would be very enlightening 💜
OMG younjust got 40.000 subscribers. Congratulations Gavin you deserve this so much🥳🥳❤️❤️❤️
Thank you thank you thank you for being the Northanger Advocate we needed. You sir are a hero among men!
I so enjoyed this video, I'm such a Jane Austen Fan and everything you've said was so true and amazing. 👏🏻💖
