The Real Reason These Popular '90s Cartoons Were Canceled

- Ever since The Flintstones, there have been cartoons on TV for adults, but the idea of the adult cartoon really came into its own in the 1990s. The decade featured great animated fare for kids and adults alike, and even some of the kids shows dealt with quite mature themes. However, all good things must come to an end, and it felt like some of these ‘90s cartoons were canceled way too early. Some simply didn’t want to decline in quality, while others left the air for truly bizarre reasons, but they are all missed. Here’s the real reason some popular ‘90s cartoons were canceled.

What was your favorite 90s cartoon?
Batman The Animated Series loved it as a kid and still do.
Gargoyles 😀
Ren & stimpy and kid beaver show I forgot the name
The Tick

These kids nowadays will never know the joys of waking up early Saturday morning with a bowl of cereal and Saturday morning cartoons

Yeah but they have whole channels that show nothing but cartoons! And streaming services where they can binge watch better than an adult!
@@josephgwiazdzinski2149 your correct but there is something to be said for limits and anticipation. It was like cartoon Christmas on Saturday morning and then you used to have to wait an entire week to see it again lol.
Nope. They killed it. That’s why I don’t envy this generation.
More conveniences at their fingertips yet more limited than ever today when it comes to quality and expectation. Like they’re being conditioned to not try anymore. Sad.
True moments to look foreword to with genuine enthusiasm and a feeling of joy when the theme song hit like nothing i felt since.
So in short: 98% of the reasons for most getting canceled is money
TheAnimalShocker capitalism
And yet they make these crappy shows that no one wants to watch sooo money loss anyway??
It's not always money. Sometimes low ratings will cancel a show.
Abel Lewis Which was literally none of the reasons these shows were canceled
98% of the reasons for most things is money
Wait, so I lost gargoyles because it wasn't doing power rangers numbers? The best 90s cartoon lost because of unrealistic expectations, thanks Disney boss idiots!

@@mrglass9652That's racist. I'm guessing you think only whitey can be racist though right? That's also racist.
Richard Harris what gets me is the demographics involved. Power Rangers had a completely different tone and audience from Gargoyles, so assuming the two would compete makes little sense.
and props for the original name. I might have taken you more serious, if you were Ghostdog. xD
The fact that we have shows like Game of Thrones, Castlevania, The Dragon Prince, and a bunch of other fantasy-based shows that are super popular shows that someone needs to redo Gargoyles! At least a remake or Netflix spin-off.
Gargolyes was Disney's Game of Thrones. The whole "Xanatos Gambit" trope where all outcomes benefit the antagonist? From Gargolyes. 😁
If they remade Gargoyles today, it would never have the dark tones, the complex story arcs, and the melodrama... instead it would be like the shitty third season :(
Or put it on Disney plus
@Andong oh yeah. Not the good laugh Sabrina we grew up with.
I still remember when the Saturday Morning Cartoon tradition started to end. I loved cartoons so much, I knew my childhood was officially over.
Shit pisses me off
Blame the Children’s Television Act of 1990.
I know how you feel. That’s when I started playing video games instead of watching cartoons. :/
Got my corn pops or cheerios every Saturday morning! Then when it was over got outside and pretended to be the heroes!!!

Batman The Animated Series was my favorite childhood cartoon!
Elkiy I know so good!
Yes along with Batman Beyond
Unparalleled in awesomeness!!!
Yep, @@germaxicus6670, Dagon, Juan Barraza, and Elkiy! I believe there are still torrents out there for both Batman the Animated Series and Batman Beyond. They are in VHS quality though. I doubt that will stop any of y'all from finding those torrents if you are so interested.
Looking back, we were lucky to have had BTAS! No way would a mature cartoon like that make it past the soccer moms today.
"Duckman", "The Tick", and "The Pirates of Darkwater" should be on here as well.
Hell yes to all of that.
Loves The Pirates of Darwater
Pirates of Dark Water got a shitty hand. Wasn't even given a chance to grow.
How about Reboot, and Sonic SATAM?
Duckman? Did you mean Darkwing Duck? I've never heard of Duckman.
They should've make a Gargoyles movie
On God yess!
If they do it, i have some suggestions for it:
-Possible directors: Guillermo del Toro, Alex Proyas or Martin Scorsese
-Rating: Pg-13
-Soundtrack composer: Graeme Revell
Barbara Vela yes live action movie centered around new Tower being built after 9/11 and Zanatos wanting it to be high above the clouds and obsessed with Gargoyle mythology to protect NY from future terrorists.
Ian Alcantara couldn't agree more. Been saying it for years, they need to make a movie.
Ian Alcantara
Yea that woulda been sweet! Hell I’d go see it now!

The gargoyles was my show as a kid. Absolutely loved it.
Same on my end. I used to have some vivid dreams of the show which was part of my love for the show. Than again, I was like that with a lot of good cartoons.
Unfortunately, it was cancelled because they competed against the Power Rangers. Now that's a tough act to follow.
Kevin Conroy is not "one of the best Batman actors" he is THE best Batman actor ever!!!
in much the same way Mark Hamill is THE Joker
No question! A+ comment!
You forgot about Hank Venture
Along with the best joker, Mark Hamill.
Amen !!!!!
I see Gargoyles and I click
Same!
I totally missed out on Gargoyles back in the day, but now I’m watching it on Saturdays for the first time on Disney+. Been enjoying it so far.
Might have been my favorite show back then.
Same.
Comment nearly a year old and I still completely agree! Same!
To recap:
- Producer/Creator decision due to burnout
- Cheaper shows
- In a few cases: Idiot cable Board of Directors.
Animated shows were rarely cancelled for primarily low ratings...rather it’s the time/effort to create them and the cost to produce that doomed (most) of these programs.
Good things take time, no wonder everything sucks now
-more successful shows (i.e. South Park)
..which explains why most of these cartoons today really sucks!!!
Someone white complaining
Gargoyles was absolutely phenomenal!
God I miss Gargoyles. It would totally work these days!
I see anything related to Gargoyles, I instantly click and hit the like button, lol. This cartoon deserves a Season 3 (The Goliath Chronicles doesn't exist) or a remake. So many stories left to be told. This and Kim Possible are the only Disney cartoons I hope make a return.
That's what I'm saying. Disney is stupid . Gargoyles wasn't directed at the same age group as power rangers. It was for older viewers. And you can thank Disney for that third season
@@valdr2286 or they just needed to do something different. And the original plan just wasn't working out how it needed to.
@@tracphonevirtualmagazine it was literally canceled because it didn't have the same numbers as power rangers. And for the time that was original
At least we got comics by original creator. IMO Xanatos is one of most unique animated villains... This cartoon was too smart for it's own good. Disney not so stupid. People are.
When I heard that about power rangers. I shouted that shit would never happen. The og rangers were dope.
Gargoyles was the best cartoon of the 90s aside from batman TAS
Are you for real? X-Men, spiderman, the tick, darkwing duck, superman, beast wars and batman beyond were great toons and in someways better then those two shows.
@@INFERNO95All of what you mentioned were good especially Beyond and Beast Wars but the writing in Gargoyles and TAS was far superior to the rest
The real ghostbusters teenage mutant ninja turtles and xmen can't forget those. But yes gargoyles was the shit

Ren and Stimpy was amazing too.
HBO should give Spawn The Animated Series another season, or an Animated Movie.
They should announce a return to the series and re-air the original before continuing where it left off.
There's a movie being made
@cag147 Netflix ruins everything.
The last season left with a major cliff hanger.
As soon as todd mcfarlane comes off the horse that is has to be on the big screen ie movie theaters. These are a thing of the past.
Gargoyles deserves a sequel
Totally... I loved that show👍
It's amazing how one executive who doesn't like a show would lead to it's downfall.

Interesting fact: Cartoons are rarely preformed live, as it is a terrible strain on the animators wrists.
Wow so that's how they killed off our cartoons?!? I'm upset 😞 I know it was business but smh 😢
They did the same thing to MTV cartoons back then too.
When you find out pokemon killed animaniacs 😳😅
Yeah... almost makes me hate them now lol. But who am I kidding. The show was kind aciol back then. Personally I never got into he games, but man... after that i never forgot about Gargoyles.
I like both of those shows thou I’m glad I can watch them on Hulu
Cheap foreign animation with hundreds and hundreds of episodes, that already made tons of money in its home country. It was a shoe in.
Yes that really surprised me. As much as I liked the animaniacs (the theme song, I was like 5 years old) To sacrifice it was the right decision... Obviously.
REVENGE! Let's get Pikachu, and Charizard, and that goddam Majikarp asshole, and hold em hostage til I get back my Animaniacs! Send em a fin in the post so they know we ain't kidding. I'm 44, by the way.
Batman the animated series: greatest tv show of all time
The mask of phantasm: one of the greatest movies of all time, gets you all emotional
Mask of the Phantasm is the best Batman movie I've seen! I've watched that so many times (I lost count how many times I've watched it but I can tell you I can quote the movie as it is playing) and enjoy it as much now as I did when I was a child.
Have you watched Batman under the Red Hood?
B Knuckles not yet, I intend to at some point. I heard good things about it.
Kevin Conroy: Best Batman of all time!
When you read a comic you hear Conroy's voices of both Bruce Wayne/Batman when said character talks or thinks. Same with Hamill's Joker. Screw Ledger, he was good for that version of Batman but not the best Joker ever. When I hear people say he's the best I want to burst out laughing. He's overrated, people "love" his portrayal because he died. Had he lived, he wouldn't get the praise he gets.
Saturday mornings were never the same without cartoons 😢😢

So basically the adults ruined it for the kids, how sad!! My favorite even tho an adult was the Gargoyles (would of voted them any day over the power rangers!) then second favorite Batman of course!!!

@@dsmithds That's how I felt sometimes when it was on lol It was a good cartoon though
@BlackScape Thank You, I thought I was the only one who actually remembers and love the show. Out of all the Nickelodeon animated shows that came out in the 1990s, The Angry Beavers is criminally underrated. Whenever people I hangout with talks about 90s Nick, they mention Rugrats, Hey Arnold, Wild Thronberries, and CatDog, but whenever I mention The Angry Beavers they would say that they have no idea what that is.
That last ep of Gargoyles was AMAAAAAZING. Who remembers it? Go watch it

@@robertwright7937 the 90s X men cartoon were better. So was 90s spiderman... and Batman & Robin .. and teen titans. More recently ninja turtles. 7:37 that was a big mistake. Every other station that aired Saturday morning cartoons, did the exact same thing and it's been nothing but news, politics and sports on every station ever since and every kid who loved Saturday morning cartoons at the time were pissed off when they did that.
You also have to remember that Cartoon Network premiered and Nickelodeon got into the cartoon business with the original batch of Nick Toons.
So kids could get cartoons all day everyday. When that happened Saturday morning cartoons stops feeling special.
I was thankfully in that sweet spot when the networks started to transition I stopped being into "kid cartoons".
That was at a time when cartoons were good. There was powerpuff girls, Dexter's laboratory, courage the cowardly dog, the original teen titans, among others and now we got the crap we have today. Had to cut my cable because of it.

Sooo Saturday morning Cartoons were killed by the mid 00’s thanks to offshoring for Anime such as Pokemon Digimon, DBZ, Yugioh, and Beyblade creating the weebs that we are now.
I dunno, I lay a lot of the blame at 4Kids' feet. They had all these shows, censored them beyond belief, annoying American viewers, then canceling the good shows. The only show I know of that somehow resisted 4Kids was TMNT, only having a few episodes cut because "they were too dark"
I soo wish they could continue spawn
It's hbo. What do you think?
Everyone talkin about the Critic, but no one remembers how Exosquad was murdered.
Exosquad was of anything more deep than BTAS and just as deep as gargoyles. And the beautiful thing is it holds up for adults too.
And it got shitcanned cause it was failing to move repackaged Robotech merch.
I strongly suspect Battlestar Galactica remake's story was lifted entirely from Exo-Squad. They both belong to the same company, have the same storylines...
That show was amazing. Especially for a kid's show run often before 8:00 AM. It deserved a lot better than it got; in fact, I wouldn't be surprised to see it make a comeback as some kind of remake.
The critic was hilarious. They really should've brought it back. Making fun of the movie industry is an endless concept
I miss some of these shows. Animaniacs and angry beavers especially
My thoughts exactly. The episode where the beavers show up "shaved" and "wet" killed me!
I wish they could've mentioned Spider-Man Unlimited
I'm glad you said that, that was one of my favorite shows
The real reason Gargoyles was cancelled is WAY more complex that what is stated here.
Disney had a huge falling out with the creator who owned the characters and the name but Disney owned the rights to animate the show. That is why the story continued in a comic series but Disney has black balled the show. It is all pretty involved with lots of childish bickering. In short a big company got greedy and fans paid the price. Sound familiar?
Disney's motous operandi.
Gargoyles needs a reboot.
No, it needs a third season. Same characters, actors, writers.
I remeber The Critic, I don't remeber The House of Buggin'. Take from that what you will.

that thing about Gargoyles I learned as a kid.
I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again, the 1980s were the best to grow up as a kid. The decline started in the 1990s.
Spawn was the best comic to cartoon adaptation i ever seen. The 3rd season wasn't a best at all. HBO were pushing Todd's spawn out.
There is currently a new Spawn movie in the works with Jamie Foxx as Albert Francis Simmons/Spawn and Jeremy Renner as Jason Wynn. There are also two new animated series in the works: one for adults and one for a family audience. Plus development of the film restarted back in November due to Joker being a smash hit. If anything, to make it more accessible to everyone who is not subscribed to Netflix, Hulu, Prime Video, Vudu, etc., the adult series should air on Cartoon Network during Adult Swim's Toonami block, or maybe give TBS another animated program to air some time after American Dad!.
I'd tie it with The Maxx.
