How To Slap Your Guitar Like Guthrie Govan

- Yeaahhhh. Slap them strings and shit
SLAPPING TIPS:
1. When you slap the low E with the side of your thumb, make sure your left hand is muting all the other strings so that you won't accidentally hit the A-string (or the other strings with the rest of your hand or something)
2. When you slap, make sure you do it in a whip-like motion and make sure the side of your thumb makes contact with the string real quick. Don't leave your thumb rested on the string as soon as you slap, you have to release it immediately
3. 25.5" scale guitars are perfect for slapping because of the string tension. That means, it's harder to slap on Les Pauls than on Stratocasters.
4. You might want to lower your action a bit, if your action is too high, the strings won't "snap" back to the neck as hard. You can get away with that on bass but not with the thin strings of the guitar.
5. Compressors really help to even out the sound. I'd suggest have one on when you're doing slappy stuff.
Hope that helps!
its ok but u talk too much so u suck
All that money on mime school for nothing! :O
This comment is so funny lmao

very nice, thanx!

You my friend just earned a sub. Is that a Greg Howe signature model?
Great job, man! Thanks a lot 😀
great lesson man
Thank you!
Ok thank you, Im still relatively new at playing guitar but thanks for the help ! :) .
Hah! Thanks. I always try to put in something funny/witty on the descriptions because I feel like nobody ever reads them.
Good work, man! Really helps! Thank you!
great video but also very hard!! how did u lerand slap guitar? there is a book for slapping guitar ??
Dude, thanks a million for this :) I've been trying to learn this technique, you made this easy :)
oh man...you make me feel bad cuz you are too good T_T
video was great thank you
Thanks man
I'm 8y late, but that's pretty good man, thanks
I based the first slap sequence from an old Guthrie video and the second sequence was from a song from his album. I think the title is pretty appropriate!
Helpful!
awesoe workª
That was very helpful.
Hmm. It could be possible that your pick-ups are very low output or they're medium output but aren't high enough. Or you're using an HSH guitar but you sunk the middle pick-up (sort of making it just a single coil with very low output). What guitar are you using? If it's possible, make a sample video so I can see what's going on.
dude you rock, thank you so much for sharing this.
ive got emg 81 and 85. im using the 81 but when ever i slap i get too many harmonics. What should i do to get nice clean slap?
Slapping kesson for those who already can slap
Does this work on acoustic guitar? Because in some tabs I see like 3X34XX and does that mean i have to use this technique?
The Xs on tabs mean that it's muted. I guess 3X34XX is a G7 chord but with the other repeated notes muted. Xs can be used as a substitute for "dead string" slaps, since they ARE essentially just muted strings, only attacked differently. I highly doubt that's what you need for that chord/tab :)
hey man i need help!! i can barely get any sound when hitting the muted strings with my left hand on the neck. any tips?
This was really helpful unlike a lot of the slap technique vids. You slowed down and showed what each hand should be doing. Now all I need to do is actually practice...
best lesson on youtube, simple, funny, and realy interessing !
Thanks to you i'll be able to cover wonderful slipery thing !
Thank your bro' !
"triple slap thingy of doom ^tm"
I lol'd when i saw it
Should've called it "triplet handslapping thingy of pain" for added emphasis
tienes alas de colibrí en las manos ??.
Description of this video = win
sweet guitar :)
I checked Wikipedia and apparently there are two types available, 22.5" and 24". They are both a lot floppier than the Gibson scale length 24 3/4, so you might have a difficult time. My semi-hollow has 11s in it with the Gibson scale length and I can slap in it just fine. The thing with shorter scale lengths isn't that it's impossible to slap on them, it's just a lot more difficult. Lemme know if you're having a hard time, maybe I can help!
Seriously! That was nice man! LOL hahahahahaha good teaching!
nice bridge
is that the greg howe signature? what's it like?
Hey man i've troubles slappin the strings. the note doesnt ring out. Just pop D: help
Killed 2 packs of strings on practicing slap on guitar.. the fourth string, both times - it ripped at the bridge. Sucks(
Am I slapping hard because it hits the fret board
I suck!
nice video buddy but i wanna ask is that the tension of the string of your guitar is affect to slaping?
Do you mean how does the tension affect slapping? The higher the tension, the easier it is to slap. If the strings are floppier, the strings don't snap as much. You can still slap, but it's just much easier if you have a higher gauge or a longer scale length (25.5" vs 24.75")
Paolo Castillo thanks buddy
I need more lessons advanced
galing ng slap mo man.. :)
sounds foonky and I like it, but I have no amplifier so its pretty hard to play this quiet on unplugged electric guitar. I prefer my hardcore clang/pop technique where you pop the strings as hard as u can to get some sound ;)
Yup!
Hmm. I don't have any guitars with active PUPs so I don't really know. Sorry I can't help! :/
hey man! thank you for the tips! i could really slap the shit out of it already!!
VERY NİCE GREAT
Hmm it seems you are hitting the frets too hard that you're "fretting" them as if you're hammering them on the frets (it's actually a cool technique for legato, but I digress). You have to "slap" with your left hand fingers as well. By that I mean you should hit the strings in a snappy way. Don't let your fingers linger on the strings (unless you really mean to do so for muting) and don't snap too hard as well that you'd fret notes (like I said earlier). Let me know if this helps.
at 0:40 it stops for me..I can not do that..I produce just cold stopped dead notes..
I have the same problem
There should be a whipping motion with your wrist. I indicated it on the description! The whipping motion should be super quick and should only hit the string in a split-second. If you stay on the string too long, you'll mute the string with your thumb. Hope that helps!
just do it really fucking quick and it rings out
You know what else makes noise when you beat on it? :)
fuck this i quit
That rhythm at 2:19 sounds like Jordan buckethead
Thanks for your video! It's been a big help but I've been having trouble with not really getting that slap sound with my left hand of the fretboard doing the triple slap stuff. like when i do it i either just mute the guitar or i hit note as if i were hammering on. Do you have any advice for me to make it work?
problem i have is with i index finger. pulling the d when i mean to pull on the a or pulling the a when i mean to pull on the d ..... i wouldn't mind but my girlfriend has wylps up to l'oiseau
What string gauge do you recommend? I use 9s atm
I'd say 10s. You can still slap with 9s, but it gets easier the higher the gauge. I been using 11s for years now, but I think I was using 10s when I filmed this vid!
Thanks Paolo. Also had a question about pickup configuration. I'm building a guitar ssh. DiMarzios cruiser neck, tone zone middle, crunch lab bridge. All humbuckers and hot, except the cruiser voiced like a strat. What pickup selection do you recommend with ssh? Should I add a coil split for the bridge and neck humbuckers?
@@altonszeto50 IMHO, either will sound great! Split coils or SS combinations are good. For SSH, I'd say: neck, neck/mid, neck+bridge, mid+bridge outer, bridge. But that's just me! I never liked having a middle pickup cause I keep hitting it.
@@PaoloCastilloMusic thanks for your input! appreciate it!
0:30 this technique is called: Noob slap
Funny and helpful as fuck
VERY FUCKIN' HELPFUL. Thank you man. Really.
Thanks, I really appreciate that! Share my video :D
I bet telecasters are great for this stuff
You're right! Middle position sounds amazing for slap. I should probably make an update slap lesson with my tele.
Paolo Castillo I'm really tempted to buy one never played a tele and I'm really getting into alot of slap style and funk, blues, country and rockabilly type stuff it sounds great I've been doing some research and you can get a good quality tele and a bass from harley benton for just over £200 which is amazing for the quality
Try one out at a store! The fret radius is more rounded than usual (7.25-9.5) in comparison to Gibson (12) and other superstrats with flatter radii (14 upwards). It's basically much harder to play on a Fender than other guitars.
I believe that all guitars can be played for all types of music! So just pick one that inspires you to play and play with it! Just make sure it's comfortable to play.
Can I slow down? Are you serious? I played it in sections and slowed it down separating the left and right hand repeatedly. This isn't exactly something you can tab out, and even if you can, it wouldn't make a lot of sense. Everyone else got what I was trying to teach.
could be very helpful if you added a bit of slow-motion dude
+jebobes there's speed option in settings of youtube video.I think this can help

The 4:33 this video goes on for is more useful than an hour of someone else teaching!
and somewhere Haydn is rolling over in his grave.
Yes, I understand, but you completely missed my point. If I made a tapping lesson based on a Greg Howe sequence, do I label it as "How to tap like Van Halen"? Van Halen wasn't even the first to tap on the guitar. I'm pretty sure Scott Mishoe wasn't the first to slap either.
I got the sequences from Guthrie, the target demographic = people who want to slap like Guthrie, the people viewing the video are people who saw Guthrie slap and want to learn how, etc. That's what I'm trying to say!
Bass: copycat!!
much too quick...
no matter what i do low e string doesnt sound anything like yours. fuck this
Sorry to hear that! Check out the slapping tips I included on the video description above. You have to do it in a whip-like motion, otherwise it won't ring out!
My culture is not ur prom dress.
Pfft. guitarist
aghhhh, sounds gross bro! I dislike this type of music
