Wow! I remember being nine years old and watching Game Show Network. Admiring all the grades because all I ever wanted to do is be a presenter on television & radio. Game shows specifically are my passion. I would admire all the greats. Study them and emulate them in my bedroom. And then Todd Newton came on for the first time on GSN. Boy was I shocked. Not only was it a new personality I had never seen before. It was a fresh personality high energy with an absolute love for the contestants. From that moment on, I had to watch every episode of this show. Todd and Ryan Seacrest became my go to examples for anything on air.
I’m in my 30s now seeing this pilot for the first time and it confirms everything that I thought about Todd. thanks for being awesome. Wink thanks for sharing!

A great GSN original 20 years ago and today, would make a great addition to the BUZZR schedule since Fremantle produced it. The first reboot of Press Your Luck 17 years before the current ABC version. I loved all versions.
Fremantle produced it. However, GSN owns the rights to this one. So I wouldn't hold your breath for this version ever coming to Buzzr.

This was great. I love seeing the "master" tapes with the extra bits left in for future editing. Just shows how non-random these games actually were.
No, they were actually random. US law doesn't allow these games to not have a fair chance for each player to win. Pilots are different though. They're all actors and the intent is to give higher ups in the networks something to watch as a demo of how the game works. Basically a pitch saying "Here's an idea of how this show would go. Can we go forward with contestant auditions and production?"
@@thk573They were able to program the board to autohit the Whammy after that one blooper/malfunction that required a reshoot. But I know in practice, that can’t be allowed.
It's very interesting to see this pilot with the extra bits of the spin reshoots. Now all we need is the 2019 - current Pilot w/ Elizabeth Banks episode.
This was really unique. Thanks so much for the upload! I found it really interesting that they could manipulate the board to land on certain spots for the reshoots.

I very much love Todd and his work. I believe he would bring some new juice and life to Wheel of Fortune once Mr. Sajak and Ms. White retire. But Wheel also seems to be a more sedate kind of show whereas Todd has a bunch of enthusiasm. Todd definitely deserves a big time gig. He did great with Hollywood Showdown and Powerball Instant Millionaire.
I also remember his tenure on the ill-fated "Family Game Night" on The Hub (before it became Discovery Family).
This deserved a longer run. That being said, I often felt like Todd was yelling. Maybe it was that loud in the studio.
The pilot episode was different from the original run on GSN, in which later changed to three contestants starting with $1,000 each, with each taking a turn on the Big Board trying to avoid the Whammy and giving the option to freeze with their total or pressing their luck. Then it followed with the question round to earn spins and take their spins in the final round.

The next two taped episodes feature no $1,000 bonus, but the Freeze replacement already happened. The next one debuted the bonus.
Them spraying the wrong contestant and Dion laughing is the funniest ever.
Love the errors this pilot has like the Double Whammies failing to land and Judge Whammy not being chroma-keyed correctly
NO! I REMEMBER HIM NOW! TOD NEWTON WAS ON "Family game night"!! HE WAS THE HOST FOR THAT SHOW AND I USED TO WATCH IT AS A KID. ALONG WITH ALITTLE BIT OF THIS VERSION OF PYL. BUT I HAD NO IDEA HE DID PRESS YOUR LUCK.

Been wanting to see this for years. Thanks for another gem, Wink! I like that this is unedited so we get to see the outtakes. I know game show pilots are often “fixed” to show the network how things would play out in certain scenarios but I found reshooting the entire question round and having the players give incorrect answers the second time around somewhat odd. I wonder why they did that. Obviously this wouldn’t happen on a normal episode.

This is very interesting. I've never seen the behind the scenes of a pilot, with the reshoots. They even did reshoots where they made contestants change their answers to have a different number of spins.

Suggestion, if this show should ever be brought back: For the displays, for the sake of readability, I'd go with a black background, with LED segments being as follows: Large green LED segments on a row all to themselves to display how much money one has won, and then below that, from left to right, in a smaller font, the number of spins in blue, the number of passed spins in amber, and the number of whammies in red.

Do you by chance have the pilot episode of Russian roulette with all of the outtakes?
My only concerns are which were real in the final print, and which were outtakes, since unlike other series, game show pilots are never seen on air. In the question round, 2 player changed their answers on 1 take on the third question. The spin count as seen on the alleged final print was different.
Ariane already lost the "G" with that (double) Whammy so IDK why she wanted the "M"
I suspect she did not know. It was interesting that the producers did not tell her.

No offense to Todd - he has/had great energy and likability with hosting game shows - but this was Peter Tomarken's game and always will be. The reboot featuring him would've worked if given the chance, despite Bob Boden's insistence on wanting a younger, "hipper" host for this new version. At least he gave Peter a shot, albeit a feigned one.

It's as if Todd Newton was made for this show. No disrespect intended to Peter Tomarken (God rest his soul), but Todd I think was the better choice for this.

Who is going to win?
I would say, what holds this down is what I would call the "Why so serious?" effect. They styled the Whammys here more as actually-threatening menaces, as opposed to the inconvenient pests prone to wackiness that the original and now the subsequent revival both employ. (And the way-too-prevalent Double Whammys in Round 2 did not help.) It makes this version less fun to watch regularly. (The current CBS Let's Make a Deal suffers from the same thing with its Zonks.)
The more formatic adjustments, on the other hand - the different board shape, the different round structure, even the different board elements - I actually don't mind those at all. It's just that this version has less of a "fun" vibe to it.
So what was the point of them redoing the question round? People’s answers changed, contestants had fewer spins. Isn’t that like…altering the outcome of the game? Can they do that?
Since this is a pilot, the contestants don't actually win anything and are simply paid to be there. Also, most game show pilots are "fixed" so the network can see how certain scenarios play out and, as such, normal standards and practices don't apply. My best guess is they probably wanted the game to end in either a specific way or amount of time so they asked the contestants to give wrong answers.

Since this is a pilot episode, these are actors playing the role of contestants. They don't win any of the money and prizes.

@@ChokeslamToHell Not true. I was a stand-in for rehearsal and when a Whammy animation appeared, all of the game board monitors switched to show the animation.
It's a pilot. You might say "rigged' or "fixed" but here since it's not broadcast, there's no Standards and Practices overlooking this.
I always hated the Double Whammies.
