IceveinsProductions It’s a shame how Michael let all the money go to waste. You’d think he got the biggest break of his life, but all it did, was fuel his thirst to get rich quick. He lost all his winnings within two years, spending it on rogue investment and having half of it stolen in a home burglary.
In the latter, he literally had $50,000 in single dollar bills, in his house to win a radio show jackpot, and since his winnings were no secret in his neighborhood, someone stealing his winnings was inevitable.

I'm quite perplexed why CBS guys tried to suppress the airing of the show for so many years afterwards and fought the guy on his payment. They should have spun it as a historical performance and use it as much as possible for publicity, while quietly changing the patterns. This is such an electrifying story for millions of people watching! They should have thanked the guy for so much special advertising and run documentaries and PR events with him. So much goodwill could have been won.
Especially considering his background! A poor, unemployed bloke running an ice cream van turns his life around! (or at least won enough to try to turn it around, as we know...).
They didn't lose much money on it either. Their cap on allowing a person return was $25k per contestant - they later raised it to $50k in the same year. So one guy randomly winning $100k certainly didn't put them in the red. It was such a magnificent story - and totally legit! Unlike the "Quiz Show" scam.

    • @BLRNerd
      @BLRNerd 3 роки тому +2

It is legit but he was essentially counting cards.
There's a doc produced by Game Show Network over how he did it. It was totally legal but it exposed the system. After this ep they changed the cursor pattern and added a lot more projector patterns. Pretty much he figured out the pattern of both the cursors pattern and when a certain set on the projectors was going to come up on the board.
When the show was revived on GSN as Whammy! in 2003, the second round, with updated technology, changed the board's spots at random times one by one, plus they actually had a rematch with Jaime, Ed, and Micheal's Brother on that show. Peter actually hosted the quiz portion of the show for that ep shortly before his death in a plane accident.

At the time, the executives were too embarrassed by the incident to openly talk about what happened. It wasn't until 10 years later, that they briefly talked about it, albeit not in as much detail compared to the 2003 documentary. By the time 2003 came along, enough time had passed that CBS calmed down enough to openly talk about what happened during that famous incident.

  • @PureExile

This was a truly stunning performance. Michael Larson realised that playing the board was a game of skill; he spent months studying and practising, and when he got the opportunity he held himself together under extreme pressure to successfully execute his plan. It would have been glorious to see him hammer the board for even more money but he knew when to call it a day and bank the cash. Without a doubt one of the greatest game show performances ever.

To be clear, there’s a difference between exploiting a glitch and cheating. If Michael had secretly used some kind of hidden device to manipulate the board or managed to obtain advanced knowledge of the trivia questions, then he would have been cheating.
However, using his intelligence and observational skill to discover a flaw in the system and then use that to his advantage is not cheating at all. It’s no different than a runner on second base figuring out the catcher’s hand signals and relaying that information to the batter to let them know what pitch is coming or a defense reading the quarterback’s eyes to determine where he’s looking to run or pass. Even the CBS executives and legal team agreed he didn’t cheat.
Michael wasn’t the problem. This is purely the fault of the programmers who didn’t thoroughly think this through and failed to address this systemic flaw in time.

Michael Larson really made history. CBS thought he cheated and tried to find a loophole that would keep them from paying him but they couldn't. He didn't cheat, he won fair and square. The people in the control room couldn't believe this. Michael did have the light patterns memorized after watching and recording the show. He figured out that there were only 5 different sequences that they kept using repeatedly. There was no rule against what Michael did. Right after this, they changed the 5 light pattern sequences and kept changing them for the rest of the season. By the next season, they acquired new software that allowed them to have 30 different light patterns so Michael's trick could not be repeated by anyone, not even Michael.

The way I see it, Michael Larson was not a bad person. He was just a poor ice cream truck driver from Ohio who in his spare time began watching episodes of Press Your Luck. With time, he discovered that the game show's screen pattern went a certain repetitive direction. From there, he studied the pattern and figured out which prizes and whammies were in every square. Therefore, he obviously outsmarted the creators of Press Your Luck and respectively earned the money he won.
You have to give Michael Larson credit! He played Press Your Luck his own way and clearly deserved that cash!

If you watch closely, you'll find that there was still one pattern he didn't know. I typically notate the patterns by their starting square, so you've got the 3 pattern (a.k.a. the infamous 2-12-1-9-4), the 5 pattern, the 11 pattern, the 17 pattern, and the 18 pattern. It appears that he had 3, 17, and 18 down pat, and he knew enough about 11 to land on square 8, even if he couldn't get it to stop on 4. Yet pay attention whenever 5 comes up; he always lets it run its course and waits for the next pattern. Not once did he ever attempt to stop the board during the 5 pattern.
Lord knows what he would have accomplished if he had a solid knowledge of all five patterns.

These are the patterns OP was referring to (squares are numbered clockwise from the upper-left square being 1):
      3, 16, 13, 10, 18, 8, 6, 14, 7, 5, 15, 11, 17, 2, 12, 1, 9, 4
      5, 18, 11, 13, 3, 6, 15, 7, 1, 9, 14, 16, 10, 2, 4, 12, 17, 8
      11, 6, 10, 12, 1, 4, 14, 16, 2, 9, 17, 8, 13, 15, 3, 7, 18, 5
      17, 10, 15, 13, 2, 8, 18, 16, 12, 3, 5, 11, 7, 4, 1, 9, 14, 6
      18, 16, 10, 5, 11, 9, 2, 13, 17, 7, 4, 15, 12, 8, 6, 3, 1, 14
Larson's goal is to land on the 4 and 8 squares, which had money and a spin. He would use the 2 square and the next square as a reference to know what pattern the lights were on. For example if he saw 2, then 12 light up, he knows the next squares are 1, 9, and 4, which he'll try to land on.
Basically he's waiting to see this:
      2-12-1-9-4
      2-4-12-17-8
      2-9-17-8
      2-8-18-16-12-3-5-11-7-4
      2-13-17-7-4
If you watch his full game and see other pictures online that show the patterns visually, you'll start to see them.
I think he knew the 5 sequence but thought it was too fast and confusing, since it used 4 as a reference. The 17 pattern uses 8 as a reference but is longer and easier to plan for. I think he also wanted to stick to fewer patterns he could nail consistently.

It's incredible he played as long as he did without hitting the whammy. Even knowing the light patterns. He invented a new word though: STAAAAAAPP! I used to spend part of my summer vacation from elementary school at my grandparents and watching this unfold on tv, I will never forget it.

He likely also memorized particularly the safest ones (I.e the ones where even if his timing was off he would still not loss as accepting more risky ones could blow it all, notice how the entire time he never got a single whammy. His risks were clearly calculated as he only intended on hitting 2 squares, some of these he mistimed and still didn't loss it all.

Hes paying attention to the 4th square on the top row because it always has the one spin aspect and it rotated between 3,4 and 5 thousand dollars And the third square on the right side because it rotated between 500, 750 and 1,000 plus one spin. This enabled him to get near infinate spins and rack up money very fast. He paid attention to the light patterns and this is what pissed off cbs. This man won at the time almost 4 years middle class salary(30k a year) . Kudos to you Michael Larson. CBS shafted you.

PYL took place in the state of California. Nobody was going to beat him up on suspicion of being gay/transgender.
In fact, PYL had a "woke" episode to briefly highlight 2 women and their adopted child, which was very controversial in the mid 1980's.
They never said the PYL winner was gay, but it was strongly implied.
