How Much Money Do Formula 1 Pit Crews Make?

  • Pit stops in F1 have evolved significantly over the years. Back in the 2000s, pit stops generally took 6 to 12 seconds primarily due to refueling but these days formula 1 pit stops are literally a matter of a second or two and can make all the difference in securing a win. This is why the job of a pit crew is essential during a race. Let's see how much each member of the pit crew makes per year.

This is total nonsense… firstly, pit crew, however crucial, is a very small part of our job. Trackside F1 mechanics and technicians make between £40k-£70k depending on our role. A certain portion of our salary is based on us travelling. Our expenses amount to about £8k per season, and our bonus is based on finishing position in the constructors championship. Where this guys numbers have come from I don’t know! I wish!

I have a question: how do you even get a job like that for a formula 1 team? It seems like such an exclusive job with crazy connections needed

I worked in ALMS and that is true in the US racing series. However in F1 that is not the case, the transport duties and garage setup is done by an outside company. The crew you see in a pit stop show up once all is setup and ready to go. What you don’t see on tv in F1 is the amount of behind the scenes crew there are, for example at LeMans there are guys behind the garages repairing carbon components all day and rarely see the cars on track, many of the behind scenes crew at LeMans have at one point worked for an F1 team doing the same job.

Pit Stop: We don't know, but here are some random numbers and an explanation on how a F1 pit crew is assembled...

the flashing light on the wheel nut gun does not represent the nut is tight this guy does this from feel they are not allowed any devices that tell them the nut is tight it is physical feel, the nut is torqued up to the correct setting for the race by hand wrench during the tyre change he/she must do this via physical feel

What a load of shit, I work in motorsport in the WEC and have lots of friends that work in F1 mechanics/pit crew staff earn nowhere near those figures, more like £50-75k with podium bonuses. Also there jobs aren’t just based in the pit lane. Some work on the car all the time, some work in subassembly, some work in parts department. The pit stop element is a tiny proportion of their job

This is utter, utter horse crap. Trackbased F1 mechanics earn anywhere from £35k at the junior end to £70k/80k towards the top end. The numbers in this video were plucked out of the air. Also, F1 is a killer for anyone with a family - most trackside F1 staff I know (and that's a fair few) have been divorced multiple times.
