"He was a friend" - Terry Venables Signs Gary Lineker to Tottenham Hotspur (1989)

On 23 June 1989, Tottenham manager Terry Venables was joined by his latest signing, Gary Lineker, for a press conference and photoshoot at White Hart Lane. Venables had secured Lineker's transfer from Barcelona, Venables having been the person to sign Lineker to the Spanish side while serving as the club's manager in 1986.
Gary Lineker has led tributes to Terry Venables, who died on 25 November 2023 aged 80. Posting on X, formerly known as Twitter, Lineker called Venables "the best, most innovative coach that I had the privilege and pleasure of playing for". Not only was he a "great manager", Lineker added, "he was vibrant, he was charming, he was witty, he was a friend."
