Agreed. When I feel the urge to listen to Freddie this is the go to song for me. His vocals are incredibly powerful. John Deacon was a great songwriter. When I feel lonely and down I crave this song.

John Deacon is a genius! The first time I heard this song, I’m not kidding, I teared up the moment I heard the first verse of lyrics! That was crazy to me! I’ve never had such a random, immediate and sudden reaction to a song like that before... Just a beautiful piece.....The lyrics are so relatable to anyone who has a dream, big or small, but is always told “no” by most of those around them, or even by society in general. The lines “he spends his evenings alone in his hotel room, keeping his thoughts to himself,” made me really start crying! I graduated high school last year and took a year off to try and figure myself out and what I wanted to... just DO, and every day I sat alone at home (parents working, sibling still goes to grade school, friends going to university... I could have worked but decided not to) dreaming of what I want to be... what I want to change and what I want to leave behind; and I keep those thoughts, those plans, all to myself. What makes it tough is when everyone else around me seems to be aiming for/ encouraging me to aim for that “emerald bar” and that’s 100% awesome if that’s what they want or if that’s what makes them happy and satisfied, but I guess the need to shoot higher is both a blessing and a curse. And it’s hard, sometimes daunting to allow yourself to really think *freely* , because people will doubt and will question if you REALLY have said “ambition,” but we just need to spread these little wings and fly! Show them all wether it’s big or small! Beautiful, meaningful and honest lyrics by John, delivered by Freddie’s amazing voice combined with such a beautiful melody by the best band ever. Gosh, I love Queen! ❤️ (I never type comments this long but I just had to for this one!)
Ha I feel you so much, mate! I'm a bit in the same case, thinking freely is a big deal. Sometimes I wonder if John put some of his own story in this song. I think many people can relate! And yes, Deacy's the man :-)

This is a legendary song written by the incredible John Deacon. As an introvert who is still being bullied in school, I really relate to John. I believe that introverts have a special power, John showed it to us. And it hurts so much that when the shy man wanted a break from all of these, people wasn't able to respect his decision. This November, it will be 30 years since Freddie spread his wings and flew away. He would also have turned 75 this year. We miss you so, Freddie Mercury. You are loved ❤💋
Not only Freddie's vocals (which are never taken for granted) but the melody in this song is so beautiful that solo at end is mesmerizing, John did a great job, this is an underrated gem for sure
This is one of the most beautiful songs I’ve ever heard in my life. Please tell me I’m not the only one who feels something special when Freddie sings the lyrics “Pull yourself together, cause you know you should do better. Specifically the way he pronounces/sings “better” with the guitar following it.
Mark Nesham I agree. John Deacon was genius for writing this and allowing Freddie to sing it so majestically. Thank God I was fortunate to have this band in my life when I was growing up. I could listen to them all day, everyday 💕
I bought everything Queen recorded as a teenager, first 11 albums up to 'The Works'. Another stunning front man is David Lee Roth, search him out, he will open your mind. In Vegas this January too!
When I was in 5th grade in cleveland ohio in my working class neighborhood I would sit in my room and play this song over and over again. I sit here now at 53 years old with tears in my eyes realizing how truly prophetic this song was to my life. Thanks Freddie. Fly high brother fly high
I'm 58 and remember sneeking out with my friend and going to another friend's listening to this album all night in Canton Ohio, it is a great album! Ohio Rocks and Cleveland Rocks!!!
@@mariannewhitefield7492 60 now (blows my mind to even type that, let alone make sense of time, esp where Queen's music is concerned, as it never gets old). I didn't have to sneak out, altho we still did sometimes, for teenage kicks in WV. But when back in my room, I'd stack em up & fall asleep every night playing Queen LP's on the stereo w/my headphones on. I bought 5 of their albums in 1 day once, making multiple trips to the mall, each time somehow convincing my mom the Record Bar only had 1 of each, & if I didn't return to buy them, I dunno, they'd never restock? My life would end? Whatever I said, it worked, and she forked over the $: early allowance, bday cash, her own stash? I can't recall, but I was hooked on Queen from 7th grade & remain so. 👑
I know exactly how you felt. I used to play this over and over. I thought no-one else knew it or that it wasn't a big hit for them. I loved it utterly!
Smile was a band in need of a star, Freddie was a star in need of a band. John dropped in and a regal band was formed. So they called it Queen. I think this is a rare case where all four member wrote magnificent songs. Freddie called "Spread Your Wings" a singers song.
Bj Bowles I didn’t know Freddie said that! That makes me so happy to hear because this has always been one of my very favorites. I’ve been singing it in the car constantly all week long. I’ll never tire of this beautiful group. ❤️
I’m glad people are now discovering this underrated masterpiece, I remember before the movie came out only comments from months ago would show up as newest but now seeing comments keep rolling in every few to couple of hours makes me happy. The movie did secure the legacy of Queen and the members within the band and that makes me happy. ;)
I didn't listen to it for a while and I always know why it's one of my favourite songs when I listen to it.... One of Queen's really underrated songs and really deserved more than a peak of #34 on the charts....
Last night my uncle passed away. He was a fan of Queen, of rock in general, and had a unique passion for music, always playing his guitar, drums or piano as he loved to do so. I remember being in my room and this song playing from his room. Spread your wings dear uncle, I will remember your smile and laughter with great joy. 🕊️❤️

This song made me live. I am Korean and went to boarding school when I was 14 years old. I had quarrels with my peers every day, and every day was a pain because of the school that restrained freedom. Every time I was about to die, I listened to this song, which gave me hope and kept me from dying. A big thank you to John Deacon, who wrote the song, and Queen, who played it.
I love this song, always have. I used to play it over and over in 1978. I thought I was the only one who rated it. It spoke to me - Doing very boring jobs, not being happy and wondering what to do next. I was 19 years old. Well, I'm still here, and great songs like this certainly aided the journey... Thanks Queen
Well, I have discovered it when I listened News of the world for the first time few months ago, and I am 19 years old now. I am studying on school, which is boring for me and I cant wait to get out and spread my wings :D
Well, you got your whole life ahead of you. Songs like these have a feeling which resonates with others. Maybe in 2068 someone else who is 19 will feel it too. Best wishes@@jelen7217
John Deacon, an unsung, talented guitarist, songwriter, electronics engineer, & financial support 2 Queen. This song is truly his best contribution 2 Queen.
Wonderful lyrics by John Deacon. Absolutely love this song. Also, I will fight anyone who tells me Freddie Mercury wasn't a handsome man. Seriously, lol.

I hate it when people assume every good and well written song was all due to Freddie. But honestly it isn’t. Freddie has a fair share of hits under his belt, sure, there’s no doubt about that. But so Brian, Roger and John. They’ve all written hits, even masterpieces like this one. And this song is a great example of this. People didn’t remember John much. He didn’t come to mind often when people thought of Queen. But honestly he wrote some of the best Queen songs! Just saying, respect this band for all its members and all the work they did. Thanks.
Even though Deacon is the most underappreciated and underrated member of Queen, in my opinion he was the second best songwriter and player.. After Freddie, of course.

Honestly, IMO, one of Freddie's best musical and Vocal performaces. his voice was In it's prime and the "raw" grit with his pure power makes this song a dream to listen to. 1:48 when he goes "...wishin' he was MILES AND MILES AWAY" just the pure power there is amazing. I've never seen such an elegant powerhouse of a vocalist come near. Love every queen track, 10/10. But some hold more emotion or nostalgia to me than others.
This song is a masterpiece! So well put together! Still sounds fresh after all these years. Freddie's vocals in this are among his best. Deaky quietly wrote some amazing Queen songs including this one & "You're My Best Friend", "Another One Bites the Dust" & "I Want to Break Free." He was an important part of the band. Would be nice to see him tour with Queen again.
3:19 at that moment Roger decided to give up on drums and fulfill his dreams of being a conductor, before realising nobody wanted him and he had to go back to drumming Edit: it’s a joke XD Edit 2: thanks for 1k likes, I know no one really cares but that’s cool
Love the footage of Deacon playing his own keyboards at 0:30 with his bass on his shoulders, suddenly reaching for it. A talented songwriter and multi-instrumentalist he is.
I love how raw Freddie;s voice is this song. Honestly the man could sing anything and Deaky;s music is criminally under rated. EVERY song he wrote is a masterpiece. I hope he is happy where ever he is.
what the fuck do you mean "underrated"?....every Queen fan loves Deacy work...he has written many of the bands greatest songs..and if you're not a Queen fan you will never heard of this so shut up with the stupid comments.
Bob Wallace Jnr I think he means that a good amount of deacys songs are underrated to like the general public, not the queen fandom. For example everyone knows bohemian rhapsody, while not as many people know this song. And you didn’t have to be such an asshole about it dickhead
@@tylerpennington6715 Thank you; that is exactly what I meant; Deaky has many great songs that people are not familiar with - Who needs you, Need your loving tonight, One year of Love; Back Chat; My Baby Does me; all of these are very under rated and practically unknown by even seasoned Rock fans.
Deacon! Deacon! Here on a John Deacon playlist. Published about 20 songs, a few super international hits, some legendary grooves and some pretty cool love songs. And has managed to live a rather quiet normal life. For real, such a role model for a professional musician.
I want this song played at my funeral. Believe in your dreams because they are the only thing that matters in the end... they stay with you until you take your dying breath.
This is one of the most underrated songs in *HISTORY* Makes my top three in queen songs. This deserves to be as famous as Somebody to love or Bohemian Rhapsody.
Weren't they just frickin' great???!!!!!!! What a joy to watch all these videos and watch them get better and better and better til there was no one out there who even came close, or has come close to being as great as Queen. . I have been shocked to learn how many bands and singers, including Elton and even Elvis, of all people, who did not write their own songs. That all 4 members wrote lyrics and arrangements of their own is noteworthy. What also made them so special is that all 4 were highly intelligent and had careers to fall back on if music had not worked out for them. Also, about the only band where all members were attractive! Freddie apparently kept in shape to be able to lean so far back and bring himself upright so easily. I always thought Freddie looked Mediterranean. Queen were unique in so many ways and bet you won't ever see another band like them. Thankyou, UK for giving us Queen and Freddie. They definitely were created in the lap of the gods.
One of my favorite Queen songs . I love May’s guitar solo towards the end. This song just gets me to stop what I’m doing and listen. It’s just a wonderful song.

To leave his dead life behind

Boy you'd better begin
To get those crazy notions right out of your head
Sammy who do you think that you are
You should've been sweeping up the Emerald bar
Spread your wings and fly away
Fly away far away
Spread your little wings and fly away
Fly away far away
Pull yourself together
'Cause you know you should do better
That's because you're a free man
He spends his evenings alone in his hotel room
Keeping his thoughts to himself he'd be leaving soon
Wishing he was miles and miles away
Nothing in this world nothing would make him stay
Since he was small
Had no luck at all
Nothing came easy to him
Now it was time
He'd made up his mind
This could be my last chance

You've got no real ambition you won't get very far
Sammy boy don't you know who you are
Why can't you be happy at the Emerald bar

Deaky is so underrated, it makes me sad. He deserves way more than people not caring about him when Queen preforms!
Indeed, he is dancing all the time that why A good friend and me called him Disco deaky, and he is my favorite
Actually, Queen fans do care about Deaky. He is precious af.

HANDS DOWN THE GREATEST ROCK BAND OF ALL TIME. QUEEN WILL FOREVER BE TIMELESS.
This November, it will be 30 years since Freddie spread his wings and flew away. He would also have turned 75 this year. We miss you so, Freddie Mercury. You are loved ❤💋

Hope Brian and Roger will organize an event to commemorate these years!! I messaged Brian on instagram regarding this!!

No you're not the only one it has a special place in my heart as well
Mark Nesham I agree. John Deacon was genius for writing this and allowing Freddie to sing it so majestically. Thank God I was fortunate to have this band in my life when I was growing up. I could listen to them all day, everyday 💕
This is hands down my favourite song
One of the hardest songs to sing out there! My god! Freddie's voice was touched by an angel.
This song is just perfect. John Deacon is fantastic.

Thanks.

1:48 when he goes "...wishin' he was MILES AND MILES AWAY" just the pure power there is amazing. I've never seen such an elegant powerhouse of a vocalist come near. Love every queen track, 10/10. But some hold more emotion or nostalgia to me than others.
Your comment is everything
This song is a masterpiece! So well put together! Still sounds fresh after all these years. Freddie's vocals in this are among his best. Deaky quietly wrote some amazing Queen songs including this one & "You're My Best Friend", "Another One Bites the Dust" & "I Want to Break Free." He was an important part of the band. Would be nice to see him tour with Queen again.
