Thank you SO much for this tutorial! I watched it around 10 times and finally finished making them today, and I absolutely love them. My issue was that my carpenter put in replacement windows last year, and instead of insetting the windows so I could put my blinds back up inside the window sill, he made it flat inside, and outside he left the inset window sill. I didn't realize until he'd finished. I really don't know what he was thinking. But this alternative to a roll-up is just perfect, and I thank you from the bottom of my heart. ❤
I'm so glad I found this tutorial! This is exactly what I was looking for! Our house unfortunately has shallow-depth windows upstairs, and I've made outside-mount roman shades with the French blackout method for the bedrooms; however, at times we'd like to let some light in while retaining some privacy. We can just mount these inside and layer our window treatments with this now!
Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! Lord, I knew to find a tutorial explained by a lady. Lol . Men do things totally different with pullys and I'm thinking, why do you need all of that... 😂 I subscribe to your channel. You did a great job on explaining how it works, and I appreciate that.... I am making roll-up blinds for my big porch. I'm tired of the curtains when a storm blows through. With these blinds, I will be able to raise them out of the way.. thank you again ❤.. Jeana
Just made my shade using your tutorial. Your tutorial made it so easy and fun! Thank you. One thing I don’t know what to search for when looking for the wooden cord ender.
Do you know how to string these blinds using 3 pulleys (eye hooks)? If so could you tell me. If not, thanks anyway. This is a great video & helped me a lot!
Thank you. Check the stringing diagram in the video...the arrows show where the strings are tied to start, and the direction they go. It's 9 minutes 11 seconds into the video :)
Hi there ☺️ I was trying to work this out too. The strings are tied around the same screw-eye hooks that hang from the cup hooks in the wall. The diagram doesn't make this clear, but the video that immediately follows the diagram shows it.
This is a great video and instruction. The only thing I’m not sure of is how you get it to roll up so nicely. When I run the cord up and over then down the back, it lifts the shade but more in a wad than the nice roll you have. How do you get out to roll up the bottom?
Hmmm...mine just roll right up! Try getting it started by hand and then continue by pulling the cord. If you're still having problems you can send some pics of your shade via email and I can see if I can figure out what's going wrong. Email address is under the "about" section of my channel.
Thanks for the great explaination and for sharing this vid :D I am trying to make an outdoor shade (about 11 feet wide) and have a few questions. - Does the heaviness of the weight rod matter? (for wider shade, do I have to use heavier rod?) - Can I use hollow rods as weight rods (eg, hollow metal rods or hollow plastic rods that are used for indoor curtains? - If there is a wide area that needs shading, is it better use 2 or more shades or is it alright to use just 1 very very wide one? - Are there anything important to take note about when making really wide shades? 😅😅
OK, so I think 11' is way too wide to make 1 shade. I have 3 on 13.5' wall because I don't like seams on my shades as I mentioned in the vid, but if you don't care about that or you have extra wide fabric I'd make at least 2 on your wall. And yes, a rod that has a little weight does help but is not necessary. The most important function is rigidness so the shade rolls up without drooping. and whatever you choose make sure it won't get moldy or rusty. Thanks for watching!
@@jacobfiorelli7895 Hi, I’m Nancy (not Peggy 😉). Hmmm… in principle I think it might work but you’d want a wider rope or cord that wouldn’t cut into it too much, which would mean larger screw eyes etc. I’d suggest making a sample from an old blanket and seeing what happens!
So sorry if you mentioned this in the video and I missed it...but do you happen to remember the cost of the materials for this project? Your patio appears to be about the same size as mine so I'm just trying to get a rough estimate to know if its doable before I decide to make the long trek into town!!
@@fivebuckfriday I don’t remember my cost for the materials because I made these years ago, but it can vary immensely because the price of the fabric can vary immensely! I got mine at a clearance warehouse, so that helped a lot. The only way for you to know is to calculate your yardage and shop around. Just make sure you get outdoor rated fabric or it won’t last.
I don't think you can without using a tension roller, but you can make a top down Roman shade. I don't really like the way they look though. You need a board mounted at the bottom, and there are always visible cords.
I am making it to go on the sides of a pergola. Could you use this method with sheer weave ( what they make roller blinded out of) or would it be too stiff to roll. I know sheer weave roller blinds have the chain/ clutch mechanism.
Without putting my hands on the fabric I can't make any promises, but if this fabric rolls nicely with a clutch roller I see no reason why it wouldn't work!
Is it possible to have the shade stop midway and not fully unrolled? In my application, there is nowhere to install a “cleat” to wrap the cord as a measure to hold the shade midway.
I like your tutorial about blinds but I love the views from outside your windows more! Absolutely beautiful ❤
That’s the best tutorial I could found and it seems very doable!! Thank you so much.

I love that I was able to help you find a solution and that they turned out well!
This is what I want in the bedroom but with a lining. Will have to rewatch before I cut & sew my fabric...thanks for sharing 😊

Great video - such clear and easy instructions - thanks heaps! ☺
This tutorial is fantadtic. Best ive seen. Thank you! I can do this!
Yes you can!!
I just found your channel and love the info! I'm just learning to sew and making my first vehicle awning. Great channel!
Thank you!
Awesome tutorial. Beautifully explained.

You’re welcome!
Very educational and well explained, thx
Can the roll-up shade be installed with another method than cup hooks?
Amazing. Thank you so much. ❤

I don’t see why not!

Also, just a tip, a heavier weight rod gives better results than something light like a wood dowel.

Yes, you can use a cord lock! There's a cord lock tutorial on my channel :)
I don’t get how it actually rolls up so neatly?
@@darlenehale9192 The way it’s strung and the weight rod make it roll up perfectly!
what needle size and thread weight are best?
It just depends on your fabric and your machine! For shades exposed to the elements like this I use 100% polyester thread.
Can you spell out the type of outdoor fabric you recommended? I couldn't catch it.
Solution dyed acrylic is the most colorfast and mildew resistant
Or cats!😅😅
Haha! No...I'm super allergic to cats, so our yard is inundated with chipmunks, squirrels, and birds.
