I think it depends on what ur hubting and shot placement. If im going through a shoilder, im taking a barnes or a harder nosler bullet. If im going for double lung (since i like to eat the meat i like to save as much as possible) then im going for something thin jacketed and easy expanding like a berger or nosler ballistic tip
I think you're confusing hunting bullets with fmj's. Bullets like nosler accubonds or barnes lrx's don't just poke a hole, not expand, then poke another caliber size hole on the other side. They deform and mushroom causing a longer but narrower temporary wound cavity.

Those bullets you mentioned tend to be the first bullets to fail to expand as impact velocity gets lower.
