My 7 year old, yes... 7 year old Carolina Reaper plant just started producing buds again, if it wasn't for you Shaun that plant wouldn't have survived its first year! Thank you for all the advice you give in these videos
Incredible,I didn't realize they get that old. I just overwintered my first plant, it just barely survived a lack of watering and all but the main stem died off, but now I have a tiny bonsai plant with a massive trunk.
Time for it to head off to school
Thank you so much for the information about the leaves when you’ve started inside!!! I was wondering why my new growth didn’t feel like it wasn’t getting enough sunlight. Seems like such common sense now. This is my first pepper growing season starting from seed. All the even slight tips you give to me seem to help and this is so huge for my plants I’ll let you know how this works out!
I like how you worked the topic of the video into a garden update tour. Excellent stuff.
I’ve had quite some success with plain, ground cinnamon against ants. Had a colony in one of my timberhouses and I used a generous ammount of cinnamon and they’re actually gone. Never thought it’d work but it has so far 🤞👍
Some ants feed on aphids.
Cinnamon definetly works, or if you have a greenhouse a sugar bath will keep them occupied.
Water tank inside the greenhouse also helps to heat it up during night time
Those crusty edge leaves is exactly what I am seeing right now and it was making me nervous. Thanks for sharing you have eased my stress being a first year gardener this is all a bit new to me.
Thanks so much for the garden update. They are my favorite. Your space always looks so amazing. I am looking forward to this months LS. Looking forward to chatting with you and Mrs CC. Until then, Stay Spicy!!!!
Thanks mate. See you tomorrow!
Love these meandering update videos, they're always full of wisdom! Great to see your operation expanding so rapidly as well.
Thank you for this video. This is my first year of growing chillies and I was very worried about the health of my plants but they look very similar to yours so I'm keeping my fingers crossed for some seriously hot stuff coming off them soon!
Great customer service is so important I remember when I bought my first "build it yourself PC" and the net agg didnt work, they sent new one instantly and didnt even ask for the damaged to be sent back and I never bought pc stuff anywere else ;)
Good customer service inspires loyalty like no other.
100%!
Recently put my plants in my new polycarb tunnel, growth really comparable to yours. Growing like crazy with a lot og root growth, after a winter and spring composed of a war with aphids..
Btw, I think we stole your heat wave up here in the middle part of Norway... 2+ weeks with 20C+, some days even hitting 30.. Not normal here this early.
Can you send the heat back please! 😁 It is 14'C here today. Forecasts talk about 21'C tomorrow though 🤞
@@ChilliChump we're back to 14'C now, betting we'll hit the 20's again for a short week in august..
My Chilli's went outside into the greenhouse quite early at the start of April, with heat mat and in a propagator (uncovered during daytime). At least for the last 3 years I've avoided Aphids completely. My thoughts are the plants are more settled, less stressed + larger in size by the time aphids arrive and so far none are affected. Perhaps it's just luck.
For sure the plants can deal with aphids better when they are more established. Such horrible things though 🪲
perfect timing this is happening to mine right now :00 thankyou
I am in uk & have been using an icing sugar applicator to spread cinnamon powder around my plants & so far it has stopped the ants. Thought it might be BS but so far it seems to be working. Cheap & easy to try.
Does that deter the ants, or kill them? Worth a try!
It does not kill them - just seems to deter them. Has also worked brilliantly on my broad beans where the ants love to farm the aphids. No ants & no aphids so far!
Definitely try out Diatomaceous Earth for the ants, it is a type of fossil that sticks to them and dries them out( they bring it home cause it sticks too them) spread it across from paths that they take so they always walk through it and they be gone in a few days( make sure to apply it on dry days and little bit is only needed) quite cheap too
The Terro outdoor ant bait works good at killing the ants. Used it in my raised beds last yr & it killed all of the ants👍. Got it on Amazon
Active ingredient is borax. So just buy borax 🤷♀️. Mix sugar and borax, ants will love it. Need to attract them with something sweet but it's hardly rocket science.
Boric acid is for smelly shoes, don't confuse the two, many people do.
Looking good!👍
diatomaceous earth food grade works great for ants. The best thing about it is that you can eat it as a suppliment and it 100 percent safe for all animals. Its made from fresh water diatoms or seashell. Just sprinkle it around the outside of your greehouse and directly into the tops of your pots. Re-apply every so often after a rain etc... i get mine on amazon. I killed a few fire ant nests with it as well. It causes ant heads and legs to fall off.
Be aware that it will kill ladybugs and aphids
That's a problem that it would kill other insects..but I read that if there are no ants then there will be no aphids..I'm new to all this growing veg etc..@@user-qo7ot6lf3z
Some of my favorites vids are your walk arounds. Those plants are looking great for you being such a busy guy! They will explode soon.
I have about 220 out so far. The older I get the longer it seems to take.
Tell me about it....just shifting the dirt takes an age. But thankfully I still enjoy it, and find it very fulfilling. I guess the day it doesn't make me smile, will be the day I stop doing it. Good luck with your season mate.
Love your vlogs, helping out a 1st time chilli grower 😁Try diatomaceous earth for the ants.
That's a good idea! I already use it for our chickens and the red mite. Will give that a try!
@@ChilliChump Works for me! Thanks for all the great content and education you provide in spades!! 🌶
I love the updates and we all have unlucky seasons !
Diatomaceous earth for the ants but the key it to get them to move away from your yard to your neighbors....you have to locate the were they are going then blast them with water and nematodes ...lots of water then the nematodes to kill the larvae forcing the ants to move
Also your aphids have been a problem for years so it's in the soil . I suggest trying promix hp to start your seedlings with no compost and just bottled nutrients like the general flora series to make sure no aphids are happening. I overcame the same issues 5 years ago
This. I literally just did this for my scotch bonnet pots.
I use Diatomaceous earth for my aphids, but focus on dusting the leaves. Will see about doing the soil as well. Unfortunately the ants are everywhere in our yard. Which I don't really mind, as long as they aren't coming into the greenhouses!
I use fresh sterilised soil mix to start my plants. I will be completely fumigating my Germination shed though before next season. Hopefully that helps.
It’s not for on the soil the Diatomaceous Earth, you need to apply it on their tracks in blobs so they take it home and dry out the colony
@ChilliChump ok ill try that.
I sprayed neem oil around my jalapeño hybrids while I was treating em for aphids. That seemed to also drive away the ants.
Thanks bud.. I certainly got onto your facebook group. Gotta show off the plants ;)
Thanks for the information at least I know that those crusty leaves are not a major issue. Your plants look great. For the ant problem try cinnamon powder or cornmeal thats what I use and it seems to work.
love your videos keep up the good work
thank you
Could you please please please make a video on using, Urea, Triple Super Phosphate and Muriate of Potash as fertilizers? Could you please cover dosage per plant, pros and cons etc. It would be very economical to use if one knows the right way to use it. Please make a video specially regarding dosage for peppers and different stages. Thank you.
Neem oil works really well to combat ants and aphids
cool i'm also growing the french marigold this year.
They are great. I started mine a little late this year. Will definitely be getting them going in December for next season!
Hello Shaun, nice update! I'm planning to make some hot sauce at the end of the season from my home grown chillis, what's the minimum amount of plants you would recommend if I want to have a smallish yield of sauce in the fall? One liter of sauce is enough, thanks!
Hi Arnold. Depending on the sauce you are making, and the plants you are growing you will easily get a litre of sauce from a single plant
Mine are outside, there hanging on, but weather hasn't been good. We need some sun 🌞 ☀️
Very informative. Thanks for that. How do you maintain the temperature of the water seeing that the reservoir is inside the greenhouse?
The water will naturally settle at the average temperature over time. Which is around 18'C in the summer
Hi shaun i know how you feel the weather in north lincs is dire so wet for so long. Keep your chin up fella. You've got ants because of the aphids, i wouldn't worry too much about the ants north lincs is ant city, keep up the great videos cheers brad from north lincs, ps made biltong and a chilled beer ready for the live stream👍
Looks like a bit of a warm one tomorrow thankfully! The beer during livestream is going to go down nicely. See you then 🍻
Always windy! 🤣🤣👍
Anything with Abamectin will wipe them out. If you don't want to go down the pestercide route then aphelinus abdominalis will take care of them too. Good luck.
PS: the curling you're seeing is due to the aphids but, curling can also be a Calcium deficiency or even a sub optimal environment. I'm seeing some lower yellowing and interveinal chlorosis which suggests that maybe you're not feeding enough.
When removing the leaves, you also have to remember a plant can translocate ions. Personally I wouldn't remove the larger leaves unless they're dead.
Seedsio looks very cool. Can you batch seedlings. So you can trace a plant back to a seedling tray.
Can you add issues, feedings to plant records on it?
So you can save the best issue free seed or cross them?
Yea it can do all that. Have a look at my SeedsIO playlist, goes over all the functions (there are a few new things added since, but should give you an idea). IOT functionality is coming shortly too. If you join the livestream tomorrow, you will get a sneak peak of what I've been working on

@@ChilliChump 4am on a Monday it goes live. I don't like the chances but I'll catch it later👍
So I get an ant problem every year in my conservatory, I use white sugar mixed with boric acid at a ratio of 3:1 & a few drops of water to make it into a paste, kind of toothpaste consistency, they come, they dine, they take some back for their house mates & dont reappear for at least a couple of months.
Thats a higher concentration than I have used. Maybe thats my mistake. I will give it a go with a 3:1 mix. Thank you.
Last year I also had San Marzanos2. Season was too short for them - many left unripe. I have no idea how they can grow outside.
Any thoughts on the plant pulling nutrients from the old leaves before they die? Is this something that happens or no? Thanks!!
Hey there. No its not really something that happens.
I've been using cinnamon powder to help with ants on my seedlings. I haven't seen any in a while since I started.
Hi Shaun! I got some seeds last year, but I didn't get round to doing anything with them. So last december I finally put them in some soil. The piri piri has given me loads of peppers already. It's very productive and healthy plant (although it does have tiny leaves and many pale and yellow leaves). My gf loves using them in all kinds of tasty chinese dishes. The sugar rush stripey and CC Jalapeno are also nicely productive. Unfortunately those peppers are still a bit too spicy for me to eat raw. I've been looking for a nice snack chilli pepper, but so far I haven't found one mild enough for me 😅
Unfortunately the others are not doing great. The Malawi Piquante (peppadew) has only grown somewhat small fruits so far (about 1-1.5cm diameter), the trinidad perfume only grew one small pepper so far (it's dropping most of the flowers) and the habanero only grew one tiny pepper, barely a few mm in size, and also dropping most of its flowers. There's lots of leafdrop, pale yellow leaves and curled leaves as well. What do you think could be wrong? I'm growing them inside under 3 LED grow lights which have workled great a couple of years before when I had many more plants. I ran out of perlite when transplanting them from a small plastic cup where they sprouted to a bigger pot. Do you think they could have a problem with the roots? I can't trace the problem to overwatering or underwatering. I don't think the problem is a lack of nutrients, because there are quite a few healthy leaves as well, mainly the jalapeno has many healthy green leaves. Could I just have been unlucky picking the wrong seed to grow a plant from? I still have several seeds left so I could try again with a new plant. Maybe I could provide a bigger pot, but I don't have a lot of space. They are now in a pot with a diameter of almost 17cm. A few years ago I had 3-4 cayenne plants that were very healthy and productive in the same pots as far as I can remember.
My first thoughts are that you are overwatering. Especially with the lack of perlite not allowing good drainage.
With regards to flower drop, make sure the humidity in the grow space is above 60%. A quick fix there is to spray/mist plain water in the morning and evening over the plants.
@@ChilliChump Hmm thanks! Yeah you could have a point with overwatering actually. I changed the watering pattern to daily a while ago after I forgot to water them for a bit too long. The leaves were drooping so much I thought some plants might have died.. But since I changed it, I never saw any droop anymore but instead now this curling and such.. Since they got a bit large and I rearranged them to 2 plants per tray, I have not been watering each tray every day anymore and perhaps they are already recovering a bit which is why I'm seeing some healthy leaves as well. I guess the daily watering was overcompensating.. I don't have a hygrometer to check the humidity, but I'll give it a try to spray some water. What surprises me is that the moz piri piri has tons of flowers that don't drop. Maybe just differences between the cultivars?
@@RebelCoderX The Moz Piri Piri is more hardy and used to a drier environment. Different species have different needs depending on their origins
@@ChilliChump Riiight! I should've thought of that before. So basically I need to put a bit more thought into how I treat each plant and which ones I can combine on a tray. Damn, maybe I should grow cacti instead 😅
Hi Shaun, what NPK ratio are you using once your plants begin to flower mate in your fertiliser. Thanks
If it has been more than a month after final potting up with it, then use something with a ratio around 3:1:4.5
DDD, dead, dying, diseased leaves take them off thats a good thing someone thought me a few years ago, easy to remember in ur head
Try san marzano redorta next season, they do amazing in our climate compared to other types 👍
Nice! I haven't heard of those. Similar tasting to the typical San Marzano?
@@ChilliChump yeah, same taste and slighty bigger fruit. I got my seeds from victoriana nursery
Water your chilies with neem oil but only on the soil not leaves it will kill the eggs and baby aphids then they are gone, It worked for me.
Hi Shaun, at what point should you stop removing the buds? I’m in Leicestershire, growing sweet C. Annuum varieties. They’re in 7.5 litre pots and currently between 12-18” tall. Last year I kept removing the buds for too long and had loads of unripe peppers at the end of the season!
Once you are in your final pots, give it about 2 weeks, then let the plant do it's thing
@@ChilliChump Many thanks Shaun 👍
I might have missed you talking about aphids. I'm totally depressed about how much damage they have done this year and don't seem to be stopping. What did you/he use?
try neem oil
@@hamzabenhamouda8799 Thanks. I did. The aphid just laughed. Maybe they are super aphid.
I was just wondering about this. Amazing timing
All of my pepper plants are currently under 11" of water from a flash flood. I hope they make it 😂
Ouch! Good luck, hope you get some survivors
17°C 😮I don't think our nightly temps (Stockholm, Sweden) have been under 18°C for the last week or so. Are the 3 liter pots the final pot size for those plants? If so it will indeed be interesting to see the result. I usually use 2 liter pots for my "extras", so it could be interesting to see the difference another liter would make. That blue barrel... Mango chutney 🤤I'd love one of those barrels full with actual mango chutney 🤪And I'm guessing you got a brewdog glass then?! 🤞That tiny number 157 plant looks cute. Looks like 0.18 liter pot just to see how it would do. I pruned the bottom 10 cm (4 inches) leaves (even new ones) on all my plants the other day. Makes airflow better and also makes it easier to water since I'm still top watering them. 🤣those conflicting weather reports. We have the same thing in Sweden with SMHI. Just goes to show that it *kinda* is an ever moving "guessing game". Haha Barney the digger. You should put an actual wooden fence around it with a little gate. Would looks awesome if you ask me 😄
I am hoping to have better temperatures soon! Still cloudy here today...and cold. Around 14'C!
Wooden fence would be great...but as you know I recently built a fence to keep Barney in a section of our yard....and that made me realise how damn expensive it is 😲. But yeah, that would look amazing. Only other issue I could see though with a permanent fence, is it would make the bed prep a little more challenging. With a temporary fence, in the beginning of the season I can remove it to get things done. Will have to do some thinking for next season!
@@ChilliChump Wow, that's chilly! I'm just out on my daily walk in shorts and tank top. My phone says it is 26°C 🥵 And yeah, wood is expensive. I thought you DID want a permanent fence though haha 😂
Do you have a pressure pump on your watering irrigation to maintain an equal flow at each emitter Shaun?
What about if your getting lots of flowers but just not producing Fruits?feeding with 8/24/24 diluted 1/3, feeding every 10/14 days. Any advice mate?
I will talk through my whole irrigation system soon in a video I am preparing. Actually will chat about it a little on the livestream tomorrow too. With regards to loads of flowers and not setting fruit...check out this video, I think it will help you out! ua-cam.com/video/XBvR-D1Z_1c/v-deo.html
I think you are feeding way too much btw....thats a lot. I won't even feed these plants at all until about a month after final potting. And even then I will be feeding around once every 3 weeks at most.
@@ChilliChump oh wow, 3 weeks ok, noted!
Thanks Shaun as always.
Looking forward to the next video then!
Hi shaun whats your opinion on pots made of cloth?
I am not a big fan of them. Especially with the way I grow. You will be watering more, and drying out quicker, especially on the edges. Results with them have never been as good as my other methods. Biggest benefit of them is that they are cheap up front. But if you get decent pots, they can last many years and makes sense financially.
@@ChilliChump Ty for the quick respone. I have 10 plants and testing three of them in this pots. Iam curious if the root development is really that good as they all claim
diatomaceous earth is a pet friendly, eco friendly way of dealing with ants and pretty much anything else that crawls. Aside from that there are colony killing gels that disguise themselves as food. The workers take them back and they circulate up to the queens and wipe the entire colony out. Either way should work well for your ant issue. Cheers.
Hi, have you tried Ant Stop Granules, sprinkled under your pots. And in a 2 or 3 day, no more ants, it's always worked for me, I had a large infection of ants under my Blueberry pots, and this got rid of them in no time, give it a try, I don't think you will be disappointed.
Thank you. I will see if I can get it
I have some chillies that are in small pots and flowering, the plants themselves are less than 30cm height. Can I pull the buds and repot bigger? will it continue growing bigger then or continue to flower? Cheers
If they have been in that pot for longer than a month, then sure, pot them up...and remove the flowers and buds. It will take a little while for it to show signs of growth again. But will turn out great
@@ChilliChump Thank you, I can just keep pulling and they'll be good? Thanks again.
Have you tried nematodes for your ant problem?
I am using nemasys nematodes to solve an ant problem in my lawn for the first time. Apparently, the ants aren't killed by the nematodes but they move their colony somewhere else.
I haven't tried those before. I will take a look, thank you!
If you remove fruits, then why don't you remove them when they are still buds/flowers so the plant hasn't wasted energy growing them into a chili, this is my first year so I've been pinching them off when still buds.
When you have as many plants as he does, it is nearly impossible to pinch them in the Bud stage. And not all bids turn to fruits. I have 60 plants this year and gave up pinching buds almost two months ago because it was becoming a full time job.
Like Joey says, its a matter of scale. I will do the rounds and pull off fruit if I see them, and for some plants that I am particularly focussed on, I will pull buds too. But to be honest, if you are potting up at the correct time, then that shouldn't be an issue. Some plants are always going to be outliers though.
Thanks for replying
Curious how the lemon drop piri cross is going?
This generation 's going strong! Will do a video update on it soon. Waiting on some fruit to come through
Have you tried with a fermented stock of nettles?
For ants? Haven't tried that...how does that work?
@@ChilliChump Usually this bio-repelent is more comonly used against aphid, red-spiders and mildew but if you think about it, nettles are not so comonly attacked by ants, so it could be also a suitable (and organic) solution.
Cut small fresh nettles (like 500 grams ~ 1kg) for like 20 lts of water, put all in a bin, cover it with a lid and let it for 2-3 weeks in a place dark and fresh, stir it every 3 days. Once the time is passed, you can mix it 1 part of nettle stock for 5 of water to spray your plants, pots and surroundings.

Heyo CC is there any plan to actually launch the Seedsio into a full blown app rather than a browser based app? love the website on my PC but be much simpler using an app on my phone when im outside rather than browser.
idk what happened this year vs last year but im struggling! Last year had nothing but success this year only 7 of the 62 seeds i started actually grew, could be bad/old seeds but it sucks... guess its time for me to get new ones and try again!
Would love to have a mobile app built for it. But I don't make money from SeedsIO. And app building is not cheap. I would do it myself, but I have very limited time unfortunately. One of my patrons is trying to build something out. Will see where that goes. However SeedsIO is built to be mobile first, so it should work seamlessly on your phone through the browser (like you see me doing in the video)
@ChilliChump I appreciate the quick and thorough reply!
I totally understand, I took a few coding/programming courses for games and app design a few years ago never put it to use unfortunately if I wasn't so rusty I'd jump in to help a bit!
Glad to see something is in the works, imo I wouldn't mind paying a few $ a month for a sub for the app version, maybe have it have custom features only available on the app or something to give option/reason so you can make a little money from it?
I'd rather pay a sub to someone I trust and support than a random company that sells information and violates privacy like most companies do...
Thanks again, good luck with the grow this year!
***Ants*** use Cinnamon powder if you not know ... the little bugers dont like it and move on... nice vid chap... Hoverflies Love Nettles to ... As do Bee's
peace
Try a borax and sugar bait for the ants.. If they can take it to the queens you got the whole family....
Spinosad bait is the only thing I've tried that keeps ants (somewhat) at bay. Supposed to be safe for vegetable gardens
Thank you. I will look into it. If I remember correctly when I was researching this....it also impacts beneficial insects (ladybugs, hoverflies etc).
@ChilliChump that's a good point hadn't considered that. The ants are pretty greedy so my hope is they take the granules down into their nest before anything else can come into contact with it. It may be overkill for some but the fire ants are pretty ruthless here on the US gulf coast
Where did you get pepper X seeds!?
Amazon or ebay, iirc. They’re (almost definitely) not genuine pepper x seeds as he acknowledged when starting out. Ed’s not letting those out.
They are not real...just a company taking advantage of their customers. It is part of my series I am doing this year on whether you can trust ebay/etsy etc sellers.
Ants and aphids... Maybe praying, mantises, ladybugs, ladybug larva, maybe even let some spiders in there. Maybe even let the chickens walk around in the greenhouse. Maybe they’ll eat the ants before they have a chance to climb up to the plants.
ChilliChump If you kill the aphids and the ants should disappear, The ants are feeding on the sticky stuff the aphids leave behind.
Have you considered trying nematodes? Also the pesticide pyrethrum will kill ants I believe
Problem is pyrethrum also kills the ladybugs, hoverflies and spiders. Will look into nematodes
@@ChilliChump fair point, it’s a tricky one as I suspect that most things that can deal with ands will have a negative impact on other things.
I've tried different methods of borax application and the Terro Liquid ant Baits has done wonders, the other methods didn't work as well as these traps! If this brand isn't available to you, I'd try something similar that's enclosed, I believe that's why its so successful- no leaking, no dilution when watering, less evaporation, etc.
Our ants completely ignore Terro baits.
I haven't seen this one before, will take a look. I have tried "Antstop" bait station before, I am guessing it is similar...it works for a short while, but not long term.
The ants are there because of the aphids. They "milk" them for their honeydew. Get rid of the aphids and you get rid of the ants. They aren't really interested in your plants. Alternatively I've had really good results with cinnamon in the past. They don't like the smell and typically vacate the contaminated spots relatively fast. Just don't bury your plants in cinnamon. That can have negative effects down the line(and would be rather expensive).
Cant match the sunlight? My lux meter recently maxed out at 50k on canopy level😅
Its a cloudy day today, and my sensors show 45k lux outside. And remember that is 45k lux to ALL parts of the plant, not just the canopy. Max yesterday was 92k lux.
@@ChilliChump made me realize I never tried the thing outside, for shame.
The real advantage is the nonstop 16h cloud free daytime. I use a combination of CMH, HPS and a bunch of different supplemental LEDs to get as close to a full spectrum as possible.

Hi, Chilli. Have you tried diatomaceous earth for the ants?
I have used it for the Aphids. That worked pretty well, didn't seem to bother the ants too much. Although I was focussing on dusting the leaves where the aphids were.
You have to watch this, it is a Physicist who came up with the best hottest chili sauce ever, his youtube channel is Tech Ingredients most of his videos are about Physics and Chemistry but now, Chili sauce too, you will love it.

Awful weather for growing chillis in the uk so far
This year has been the worst start I've had to a season.
awful about the ants...fortunately i only have them in the garden not in the greenhouse.. and they are everywhere in the gardens... mulching helps in the garden. they only seem to be on the bare soil. try mulching
They are no longer an issue thankfully....however, outside, our roses are covered in them! When the weather heats up, they will disappear. I think the colder/wetter weather we have had early this year has contributed to them thriving.
those ants are planting aphids and then eating their leftovers
The ants will be farming the aphids and protecting them to eat the nectar that is left when the aphids eat the leaves.
Ants = anti aphid?
Unfortunately ants actually encourage aphids. They farm them
@@ChilliChump darn those agricultural ants!
