White Supremacy is one of the greatest manmade blights in the history of the world. Our countries have so much we still haven't accounted for and so many who still refuse to acknowledge the damage white supremacy has done and is still doing. This book sounds pretty amazing.
Yeah, that sounds like us, the centring of the validity of white guilt in discussions about racism is a really problematic trend that prevents progress, especially as our law makers are often white men and not people of colour.
I have only recently started reading about Australia's history here (Canada has one that takes a life time to look into itself). I had no idea how bad Australia was with this. It is quite terrifying.
I am legitimately grateful these stories can be told and accepted *now.* 30 years ago, we were still making paper pilgrim hats at our school's Thanksgiving shindigs and given the distinct impression that the pale people and the indigenous people were friends (in the US at least).
Now this sounds veeeery interesting, thanks for the helpful review and recommendation. I have added it to the tbr and I’m sure I’ll be able to draw many comparisons with NZ when reading it.
I'd be really interested to see how NZ compares. I always think you're ahead of us and I'm surprised when I find out about your history with the Maoris.
Not only was this a great review but you touched on some really important topics and really helped us understand the political landscape in Australia when it comes to immigration. Its great you're talking about it and giving us back story we may not have had to go into this book. ❤
So glad you shared this. I have to admit "The Rabbit-Proof Fence" is (I think) the only book I've read on this time in Australian history and definitely need to read more.
This book sounds great. Glad to hear you’re going to be reading Carpentaria, which I loved. I had been reading Wright’s Swan Book when I damaged my brain last December and haven’t picked it up since. I am thinking I will return to it next month… it being Aussie April and all.
Yeah, I think it did. I've spent a lot of time on the context and not much on things like the characters or plot, but the characters are what make the novel, they're all flawed in really normal ways.

The atrocities committed against indigenous people are just so staggering. Great review and a powerful video!
Thank you. Yeah our civilization is just so much worse than we think.

We've committed genocide and nobody is acknowledging it even happened.

I went to a very liberal school over here and we learnt about the racism, but in a historical way, like it was a thing of the past.

Thank you, Australia has a horrible political past (and present), but to be fair so do a lot of places.

I've never actually read Rabbit Proof Fence, it's really famous here and I'm probably avoiding because of that. Did you enjoy it?
@@GunpowderFictionPlot I read it years ago for a university course, so probably due for a reread, but I remember finding it really eye-opening
I'll have to find myself a copy and read it, suspect I'll find it eye opening, there's not a lot about Aboriginal people we're told about here.

Looking forward to trying Wright, I'm excited for my Aussie April TBR for the first time in a long time, it's going to be quality this year.
Very powerful video, Scott, and the book sounds amazing. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you very much. 🥰
Great review. Hadn’t even heard of it before tbh, but added it to the list.
I hope you enjoy it. I'm not sure how well know it was received outside of Australia.
Interesting topic that can't be exposed enough. Did it work as a novel?

@@GunpowderFictionPlot great. That's what I was wondering.
Interesting, thanks for highlighting

Thank you for watching. 🙂
Great review and fascinating discussion
