Paul Heyman on Backstage Drama: CM Punk vs. Undertaker
Вставка
- Опубліковано 21 гру 2023
- In the 2013 Money in the Bank event, CM Punk was betrayed by Paul Heyman, leading to a feud where Punk targeted Heyman's associates. This culminated in a 'Beat The Clock' challenge against Ryback, which Punk won, choosing a Handicap match in Hell in a Cell. Despite Heyman's attempt to avoid confrontation by staying on the cell's roof, Punk defeated Ryback and then climbed the cell to confront Heyman. Punk ignored Heyman's pleas for forgiveness, assaulting him with a kendo stick and executing his GTS finisher on top of the cell.
But still, obviously that’s for people to decide higher up on the food chain than I am. He’s a guy that does numbers and makes money. I think that would be a risk-reward ratio that I’m sure from a company standpoint they’d have to consider.
But when it comes to would we take him in NXT and have him on our television? Are you kidding me, of course I would! I just don’t think anybody’d let me.”
The final line is open to interpretation, but I think HBK means if Punk signed with WWE, it’s extremely unlikely the plan would be for him to work in NXT.
HBK finished off the Punk answer by suggesting that it’s foolish to say no to a star of his magnitude:
“Well who doesn’t take that kind of star power?”
I guess we’ll find out soon enough if WWE decides to not take that kind of star power. HBK is Triple H’s best friend, so that fact that he is so open and eager to see Punk back in the WWE fold sure is interesting to me.

John Cena, while you lay there, hopefully as uncomfortable as you possibly can be, I want you to listen to me. I want you to digest this because before I leave in 3 weeks with your WWE Championship, I have a lot of things I want to get off my chest.
I don’t hate you, John. I don’t even dislike you. I do like you. I like you a hell of a lot more than I like most people in the back.
Get Last Man on Earth by Luke Richards and over 1M + mainstream tracks here go.lickd.co/Music License ID: 536xwAoKy8r
I hate this idea that you’re the best. Because you’re not. I’m the best. I’m the best in the world. There’s one thing you’re better at than I am and that’s kissing Vince McMahon’s ass.
You’re as good as kissing Vince’s ass as Hulk Hogan was. I don’t know if you’re as good as Dwayne though. He’s a pretty good ass kisser. Always was and still is.
I’ve been the best ever since day one when I walked into this company. And I’ve been vilified and hated since that day, because Paul Heyman saw something in me that nobody else wanted to admit. That’s right, I’m a Paul Heyman guy. You know who else was a Paul Heyman guy? Brock Lesnar. And he split just like I’m splitting. But the biggest difference between me and Brock is I’m going to leave with the WWE Championship.
I’ve grabbed so many of Vincent K. McMahon’s imaginary brass rings that it’s finally dawned on me that they're just that, they’re completely imaginary. The only thing that’s real is me and the fact that day in and day out, for almost six years, I have proved to everybody in the world that I am the best on this microphone, in that ring, even in commentary! Nobody can touch me!
And yet no matter how many times I prove it, I’m not on your lovely little collector cups. I’m not on the cover of the program. I’m barely promoted. I don't get to be in movies. I’m certainly not on any crappy show on the USA Network. I’m not on the poster of WrestleMania. I’m not on the signature that’s produced at the start of the show. I’m not on Conan O’Brian. I’m not on Jimmy Fallon. But the fact of the matter is, I should be.
And trust me, this isn’t sour grapes. But the fact that Dwayne is in the main event at WrestleMania next year and I’m not makes me sick!
Oh hey, let me get something straight. Those of you who are cheering me right now, you are just as big a part of me leaving as anything else. Because you’re the ones who are sipping on those collector cups right now. You’re the ones that buy those programs that my face isn’t on the cover of. And then at five in the morning at the airport, you try to shove it in my face so you can get an autograph and try to sell it on eBay because you’re too lazy to go get a real job.
I’m leaving with the WWE Championship on July 17th. And hell, who knows, maybe I’ll go defend it in New Japan Pro Wrestling. Maybe…I’ll go back to Ring of Honor.
[Punk looks at the camera and waves]
Hey, Colt Cabana, how you doing?
Let me tell you a personal story about Vince McMahon, alright? We do this whole [anti] bully campaign...

I swear Punk said he didn't need that win also. A lot of guys said they don't need it.
The way your 2nd statement ends sheds light on your first statement. It IS usually what a lot of guys say, but the suggestion has been given countless times. What Paul is saying is when it was brought up, Vince and Taker disagreed that Punk should be the guy, and Punk likely largely bcz of his respect for Taker and his streak, was ok with not being "the guy" on this particular instance. Lbvs. But truthfully it showed they were somewhat lacking self awareness. Taker hadn't had a lead-in program this great since Triple h and Shawn. Two bonified legends. One a future HOF'r and one whom already was by then. And the longest reigning WWE champion in the past half a century. A man that rose parallel to another HOF'r in Booker T, also having 6 world title reigns (btw, Idk why they snub Booker and call him the 5x champion when he literally won his 6th in THEIR promotion, but I digress.). And yet in their eyes, yeah- he can beat THE FIRST WWE UNDISPUTED CHAMPION Chris Jericho, yeah-he can beat former WWE & World heavyweight champion and GIANT The Big Show, yeah-he can beat former World heavyweight champion and WORLD'S STRONGEST MAN Mark Henry, yeah-he can beat the greatest WWE champion since Hulk Hogan, John Cena. And although this is the greatest program Taker has had in years. Punk is not who they saw as worthy to beat the streak although Punk was in his all time prime being only briefly removed from his historic title reign. Which, I'm not mad at bcz it was great story telling and the selling point of the streak is the suspense of "Whoa. He's handling his own with TAKER! Could he possibly...?!?!". However, that's on a face/base level. Nonetheless, when Punk was told they didn't think he fit the bill. He wasn't mad at it. First, bcz he had proven and accomplished so much in WWE he didn't need it as much as someone else would have. And 2nd, sadly, by then he had been passed over for so many things by this time; instead of it being like waking up to a buzzard in your room, it was more like an ant in a cornfield. Lbvs. I feel it was all screwed up in the long run. I can understand not giving it to Punk. But for them to give it to someone who needed far, FAR less like Brock, and Roman. When they had the perfect candidate and the only one that had a better storyline and program than Punk, the fallen legend, the angel with the burnt wings, the Eater of Worlds, the New Face of Fear, Bray Wyatt. Will always the biggest blunder of the streak in my eyes. Out of anyone over the past 15-20 YEARS (likely even more), Bray deserved it the most. Everyone else were already a made man. So that win would've taken our fallen legend to crazy heights and worked to rebuild Bray's stock. Thankfully, he was such the genius that he ended up doing so by himself. But yeah, he just wasn't valued too be that high or worthy like they viewed Punk. BUT the suggestion was made. It typically always was, to a certain extent, but-most felt like Punk. And really that decision, of course and obviously, was Vince's call, as Taker was so loyal to him-even if he disagreed had Vince said Punk was going over, he would have gone through with it, like he did with Brock.
P.S. Most guys felt like they didn't feel they needed it as bad, and for most, many felt it was like the Mansa Munsa affect. As it would've been more detrimental than helpful. Like after winning the top World titles, where can go and what can do going forward AFTER beating the Undertaker at Mania? Which is the only saving grace of Brock beating it. Multiple amateur wrestling championship wins, former NFL football player, former UFC Heavyweight champion and they teases it an one of Brock's UFC fights years before. And Brock is an ungodly athletic specimen. Faster than he should be for his weight and age, as well as stronger, and more agile while being younger and in better ring shape than Taker at the time. That and his creds save face a lil. But, man...what would life be like right now if they gave Punk the nod to go over on Taker???🤯🤯🤯🤯
But that’s the thing taker only wrestled established stars at mania… all established stars say they don’t need the win… so who was gonna end the streak anyway
and in the end the guy who took it absolutely didn't need it
Because they wanted to streak to be longer or unbeaten at he's age
Dont swear taker mark . Punk wanted to win he even joke about it that he put young loins over like rock and taker . So yes he wanted to win
This would be Undertakers last really good match at Mania. IMO. Takers age quickly caught up to him after this. And his matches weren't as good anymore after this point.
True this was his last great taker match at mania. The aj styles fight was good, but that was different then a match. Takers last great matches was this cm punk match and the lesner matches at summer slam and hell in the cell 2 match. But thats it.
@justin3415 his tag match against mcintyre and mcmahon at extreme rules was pretty good too
@@alexbarrett6347 yeah that was not that bad,for what it was,i would agree. Almost forgot that one, thanks for the reminder.
Not only his age but the bumps and bruises over the years
Why do people always say "IMO" when they are clearly stating a hard fact?😂😂
The ashes wasn’t over the line. Paul Bearer would’ve fucking loved that. He would’ve approved.
OOOOOOHHHH YEEEEESSSSSS
Nah Fr he woulda laughed his butt off
How do you know?
@@shoeaddiction123
Everyone that knew him says the same thing.
No he would not
The streak should NEVER have been broken... Period.
Absolutely agree
Or beaten by someone worthy not brock lesnar
Absolutely should have. Defeating Taker and ending his streak would have made someone a huge star. Takers legacy would remain the same regardless. Lesnar was the realistic choice but the wrong one
@@leisultry yes.
@@Babins1 you're more then welcome to your opinion but mine is that it should never have been broken by anyone. They can find a different way to become a "star".
I could just listen to Heyman, for hours
Go listen to his 3 hour interview with Rick Rueben then.
@@Youtuube304ssay less!!!
@@willlybruh what? You drunk, numbnuts?
I agree.
@@Youtuube304sgood looking bro cause I read dude comment after I said the same thing in my mind
Vince shoulda let Taker retire with his streak! He didnt need to "give back" to the company by losing the streak. Very disappointing booking choice imo
Undertaker sold his whole career, and thats what wrestling is,selling he explained that perfectly
I kind of agree, but also on the other hand, if someone was going to break the streak, making a beast and former ufc heavyweight champion do it, was the best choice of anyone to do it. I believe Taker should have been able to keep it unbroken. I also think Brock worked hard enough that he did earn it.
Undertaker was so unselfish, it was another opportunity to put guys over, he is almost always willing to do it. I wouldn't be surprised if they had to fight with him about it.
What benefit to wrestling does it do for a guy on the way out who’s at Taker’s caliber, what benefit does that have to make someone else golden for the rest of their WWE run off of that win, versus not giving back after all those wins at Wrestlemania? They gave Taker so much, and rightly so. But there’s no one who hasn’t crowned the next guy, no matter how big or how much respect they have in wrestling before they’ve retired. And who in that locker room at that time made more sense than Brock for beating the streak and overcoming the impossible?
@@redeastwood4850Brock didn't need it though.
Paul Hayman as Paul Bearer is killing me 😂
The streak should have never been broken.
Only way to do was have a new guy that would be around for the next 30 years
@@mattt115 True, if there was someone on the cusp of being that next big big name, yeah give it to that person. If they waited to the roman match to break it ok. But Bray was the guy who could have used that the most. Especially what he was known for, now that would have made him a bigger star. But looking back it should have been the unbreakable record.
@@justin3415 I'd rather it be unbroken but if had to have it set someone new up like Roman or bray
@@mattt115 Agreed
@mattt115 I've always said it should have been Roman. It was wasted on Brock, who didnt need it. It really made Roman's victory the next mania worthless.

Negative. Unless he cheated, I don’t believe Punk to be as good as he comes off. Brock definitely made more sense.
@@elroymartinezjrPunk vs Taker was a way better match. Probably one of the greatest wrestlemania and professional wrestling matches of all time.
Had they gone this route he probably wouldn’t have left in the first place tbh
@@brokenkayfabenot at all
Taker’s last great Mania match
After this his body was too weakened from all the years. He wasn't the same after this..
34 should've been a 40 min banger
A good reason why Brock winning was correct. But if Punk did before the Undertaker broke down, it would have been more beautiful. A fit Undertaker putting over someone would have been magical.
@@Bears86SB22 minute banger. Just in case Taker was at risk, he n Cena would have tore it up though!
I will still die on the hill that the streak should never have been broken EVER, especially because the first person (Brock) to do so was suppose to be a special thing because nobody had ever beat Taker at Mania. However they made that completley pointless by letting a SECOND person (Roman) to beat Taker at Mania 🤦♂️
I forgot about the roman one only remembered Brock lol
How did Roman winning make Brocks win pointless? That’s one of the most nonsensical takes I’ve seen in a long time
@@watchingvidz5060 I just mean... to me it seemed pointless because because like... Brock was the ONLY person to defeat Taker at Mania , and then Roman beat him, for me it kinda took it away the special-ness (if that makes sense) of Brock being the ONLY person to beat him
Vince was and is so full of himself, he probably didn’t care about giving Taker his streak, or anything other than what drug and woman can he abuse next. Sadly THAT will be his greatest legacy
The Streak didnt need to be broken. Undertaker also said that he was more than happy for the streak to be broken but it has to be the right guy that needed it. He said, at the time, it wasnt Brock Lesnar that needed it since he was established, the biggest push that needed it in WWE at the time was Roman Reigns. CM Punk definitely didnt need that win. And I think he acknowledged that he didn't need it as well.
Great editing what do you use
capcut lol
Thank you for sharing. I really enjoyed listening to this playthrough as I worked.
Punk was not the one to bring down Taker. Glad Phil could see it wasn't his place.
Meh. I would have preferred, if no one ended the streak. It was special
Good editing
Thank you.
Then they, somehow, made an even worse decision.....gave it to Brock, smh🤦♂️. I guess screwing up worse is...kinda A way of fixing a screw up. Lbvs
But i mean i didnt mind it i always thought it would be taker therevwas literally no ome in that locker room
BUT…. Did they give it to him or did he actually just take it?…
I don't understand why Brock was such a miss unless you factor in age which then I would understand. Who did you have in mind to break the Streak and why would that wrestler work better here?
Brock’s used that victory to be the biggest draw in the company for nearly 10 years until Roman finally came good, whatever you personally think of him turning Lesnar into the ultimate boss of WWE with that win was a massive success for the company. Whether he could have reached that point without the win is debatable though
@@harveyholmes9533plus it's a better thing a WWE guy like Brock beat him not someone like punk
Unrelated to the main focus of the video but that is some lovely music in the backround.
Heyman tells a lot of stories but this is one I believe
Hey doesn't lie.
The only thing he lied about was Brock making the decion to end the streak, and no one could stop him.
R.i.p. Paul bearer!
Perfect cut 🙏
Would’ve made more sense than Brock lesnar💀
Reading the relationship between Vince and Brock in that lawsuit, I think I know why he broke the streak
Meh
So Punk denied beating him? I don’t get it.. someone plz explain
It's the public answer he gave, and I'm sure he would have felt if it were truly offered to him. Truthfully, it was more along the lines of (Vince) "You're not beating Taker.", (Taker) "I agree.", (Punk) "Ehh well.....ok
.I'm ok with that."
Need the music u used here bro
The Undertaker vs. Brock Lesnar match was supposed to end in a draw, for example, both of them falling into a pit at the graveyard. The Undertaker's last match at WrestleMania should have been against "Feind". Like "Evil" versus "Undertaker." The streak remains unbroken and beautiful finale
At the end of the day, it’s all about “what’s best for business”.
How I wish I could go back to 2013
Punk didn't need that win, just the honor of facing Taker at WM is good enough imo .
Punk didn't want the win, he just wanted the match to be the main event at Mania
I think lesnar breaking the streak is one of the most clever things WWE has ever done. You cant just keep the streak going 1. people would always want a match from undertaker to see streak will still exist and taker’s body doesnt take this pressure at all. 2. beating the streak would give a superstar like 10-15 year invincibility litterally cuz its a huge huge deal. By defeating lesnar brock has become the final boss in the wwe for nearly 8 years. And from that final boss era of brock lesnar we got seth rollins, drew mcintyre, roman reigns and somewhat cody rhodes? etc, all of these superstarts launched their careers by defeating lesnar and their career wouldnt have turned out what they are now If they didnt win against lesnar. And If we litterally look at this year’s wm title cars we see these names that I mentioned at the top of wwe
If they were gonna break the streak they just should have done kt before Brock. The only way the undertaker losing makes sense, i think, is when you look at the show as a whole and since you're gonna have that euphoric Daniel Bryan victory it helps build some drama beforehand
I seem to recall something similar with Edge, that he felt he didn't need the win and that the streak should be left in tact.
At that time he wasn’t ready it’s like a unstable bomb Too dangerous with tht much power
Kane was Undertakers best rival - the abandoned undertaker did to Kane says it all.
Still doesn’t top the time they made an angle with the big show and big bossman which ended in the bossman crashing big show’s fathers funeral and driving off dragging the casket with big show on top of it. Mind you this was just mere weeks after the actually passing of the man father. That’s some wild shit
Phil Brooks should be a mid card warrior
I can’t wait for Heyman to do podcasts like how Cornette does them now
Punk wasn’t like macho man to Cena’s Hogan he was more like Bret Hart to Cena’s Hogan. Everyone preferred Bret over Hogan in early 90s just like how everyone wanted Punk over Cena in early 2010s.
Sad😢😢😢😢 Paul Berra passed 😢 😞
Can I ask where this interview is from originally? Would love to hear the whole thing.
The fact that Brock lesnar himself said he didn’t want to beat it and Vince pulled the trigger anyway is INSANE!
Full interview link? 👀👀 I wanna hear the rest of this story.
I quit watching wrestling very shortly after that match, having been a fan for over 25 years. It felt hopeless that the old guard would ever step aside and I just stopped caring.
I'm disappointed we didn't get Punk vs Cena as a WM main event. Funny how they complained they could not create stars
I personally believe if the streak was ever going to be broken it should’ve been broken by someone who needed it at the time Bray, Wyatt, Roman Reigns , Seth Rollins, Dean Ambrose Neville, Sammy Zayn , Kevin Owens etc
I feel like if they had decided to put Punk over in this match, he may not have left in January of the next year in 2014.
Thank you Brian. You were right all along. I apologise. Or as Shaq would say 'I apologise. I wasn't familiar with your game'

No he wasn't and they made they right decision!
so r u ever gonna reply and tell me the music u used bro
Does anyone have the link to the entire video?
What is this from? Is it from a documentary?
I’m firmly on the side that Brock beating the streak was the CORRECT decision. From 2015-2023 Brock was arguably the best thing in WWE, and the Streak elevated him to that level. He basically handed that rub onto Roman, Seth, Cody and Drew afterwards
What documentary is this
The only person that makes sense to break the streak is Kane, but it never happened.
That’s the ONLY person who should have ever even been considered to break the streak. He was the best and most believable option. It really shouldn’t have been broken at all. But, if it has to, who better than Takers younger brother?
Agree. Brock didnt need that one. Punk needed it more. I font know if taker shouldve ever lost the streak though.
In my opinion, and this is just the way I see it; Punk is FANTASTIC on the mic, BUT is not believeable as a legit fighter. Ever since he got his ass handed to him in mma, I just have a hard time seeing him as anything else but a bloody mess after getting beat in mma. Otherwise he is an absolute megastar and massively entertaining.
Yeah....i mean i know keyfabe is dead at this point....but still.....knowing he got his ass handed to him so hard in MMA really makes him hard to believe.

Paul would’ve liked the WWE to use him in a storyline he seemed very passionate about the business
Would have made a lot more sense for Punk to beat him then Brock and Roman. But the Streak never should have ended
It was a complete humiliation to Late Paul Bearer 😢🙄😔
Paul heyman is just a good at story telling 😂
I really believe that it really could have been either PUNK at WM 29 or Bray Wyatt at WM 31,who would have ended that LEGENDARY streak. That would've really been PERFECT! Just imagine what it could have done to the career of the one who would've broken the streak.
Nobody wanted to end the streak
And that's how big The Undertaker is 😱
Undertaker: Vince I wanna retire with my streak unchallenged
Vince: That doesn't work for me brother
Where is this from ?
Wheres this interview from?
The Streak should have stayed intact - if Vince wanted Taker to have his time to give back and roll over for up coming talent it should have been done at any of the other PPV - summerslam - elimination chamber - Royal Rumble eve - any other - and Brock definitely did not need the boost at that stage
There was only guy who could have broken the streak & made the perfect sense & that would be BRAY WYATT !!
Punk went to Paul’s family after his death to ask for permission to go ahead with the storyline. They said do it. It was all for Paul.
That would've turned cmpunk to a huge top tier star.
This was a great rivalry and only fitting that Taker won after the death of Paul Bearer. He should have retired *with the streak intact* but they ruined it for nothing but a bit of "shock value" at the time ^^
Where is this from
Not letting certain people get over on take back then really hurt the company. He retired and never really passed the torch. Never was a leading babyface.
How is this Paul’s thoughts when the person says “when Paul died” I’m thinking this is heyman or bubba Dudley idk lol
And didn't Paul Bearer's family OK'd the way the fued went? If so, theyre were cool with the bit of Punk pouring Bearer's ashes on Taker.
I think if you are in the wrestling cult, then something that would appear tasteless to us seems like an honour to them. If you could tell guys like Paul Bearer and Eddie Guerrero that they would be used in angles after passing away, they would be stoked
The ones who are saying the streak should have never been broken... are the same ones to say Sting shouldn't have retired undefeated in aew 🙄
But it would have been a great story line ender. Taker is mourning the loss of Paul and he drops rhe ball. He was on his way to being pretty absent.

That's a damn shame seeing as who eventually got that accolade. Lesnar didn't need it, it shouldn't have been him, that thought should never have entered anyone's mind. Either let the streak continue, or let Punk end it. This coming from an Undertaker fan for over 30 years, since his debut. I could accept punk. He's one of my favorites now. Alas...
This should been taker last match at wrestlemania a tribute to Paul bearer
taker wanted roman to be the one to end the streak. biggest new star coming off the shield, and his aura now and before is insane. he wanted someone young who could hold that level of power.
