  • Unaware of what Jacob Collier can do to a crowd, this crew member of the festival is left in awe when the public starts hitting those high notes, telling his coworkers to remove their earplugs.

    I think it has to do with the fact that the audience here really is SINGING harmonically, not just screaming, yelling and shouting as normally at pop or rock music concerts. It really sounds like chords in polyphonic choral singing. Beautiful!

    • @mikeg3439
      @mikeg3439 9 місяців тому +4

      A few things come into play on this. I used to have the fortune of being around Chick Corea now and then and he used to do this. I want to say he got the idea of it from Bobby McFerrin, either Bobby did this or had the idea of it.
      Chick was giving a lecture and it came up "how did you get the idea to turn the audience into a choir" and he said the audience inspired him initially, but summary:
      Obviously control is a HUGE factor. If you have poor control, you can't do this. You have to be definite, clear. The audience has to like you and want to do what you tell them. With live music, the "like/cooperative" factor is usually the easiest one, after all, they came to see you.
      Human beings very easily go into agreement with each other, very easily go in tune with each other. They tend to sense "what is next" based on key and mode that is the context. Even if they aren't theory trained, they still SENSE what sounds right. So this is why the majority will go to the right "next note" when you direct them up or down. If the mode is something Aeolian going on, they may not know to call it by a specific description, but they'll know what SOUNDS right next. The few who get it wrong hear the majority and correct to it.
      This works best if your audience tends to be either musicians or heavily into music.
      Last but not least: Chick said you want at least fifty people doing it, ideally more, because the majority will be in key. Your ear actually tends to filter out the minority off key and focus on what it "needs" to hear. He said with musicians, even the ones slightly off key will be so close that it actually creates an analog "chorus" effect (ah ha, so that's why they call that effect "chorus...").

    He has done this several times, I’d like to know how many. His audiences tend to be musicians and musically inclined so that is a multiplier. A university performance a few years ago with a much smaller audience resulted in an amazing impromptu choral performance. Would have loved to have been there for this one.

    • @bass-tones
      @bass-tones 9 місяців тому +3

      I think he does it at every single show for his most recent tour.
      You’re right that his audience is probably more “musical” than the average but I don’t think you need musicians to pull this off. You just need good communication and instruction, which Jacob has.
      Most people have a natural understanding of the major scale, even if they don’t know what it’s called.

    • @Butho_04
      @Butho_04 8 місяців тому

      His recent tour was recorded for each live and the different “choirs” from the concerts are used as backing vocals in some of his videos.
      “All Night Long” is one where he used a concert choir…
      But this particular piece here was used in several cities accross North America… I think by the time he arrived in Melbourne, he released a UA-cam video using the “North American Cities” as backing for a solo he was singing
