This makes me sad. I played magic nearly from its creation to scars of mirrodin and haven't played much at all since. The height of my competitive play was alara and zendikar blocks. Fond memories of this set even if it was a lot of jund.
Me when i spread misinformation on the internet: That is wrong and I did the math: Alpha (august 5, 1993) to Alara Reborn (april 30, 2009): 5747 days (15 years and almost 9 months) Alara Reborn (2009-04-30) to current day (december 18, 2024): 5711 days (15 years and close to 8 months. @@minervadetauro7646 so close .... yet I was wrong. I should've just said Shards of Alara. I do remember April 09 we went to Arizona for spring break and we stopped at a game store so I could look at all the new cards.
I honestly didn't know what to expect from this set. I don't think I would have been able to name a single card from the set. It's just not one I paid too much attention to, unlike me paying attention to always ask for "Top 10 Vintage Cards (Minus Power 9)"!
Bit-Blast could actually lead to a 6-for-1 in Standard if the stars aligned: 1. Bit-Blast destroys creature 2. Cascade into Bloodbraid Elf 3-5. Cascade into Blightning redirecting the damage to destroy a planeswalker (that’s how the rules worked at the time) 6. Bloodbraid attacks now-defenseless second planeswalker
@@Dazllingston I think I would stop playing the game if that happened to me. Admittedly, if a mega fluke causes your opponent to quit magic, you are kinda responsible for a significant improvement to their long-term financial well-being.
Same here. I stopped playing around Weatherlight and when I came back the new set was Alara Reborn. The fact that the whole set was nothing but gold cards blew my mind.
Quick reminder from a commander guy here. Maelstrom pulse is getting better every time a clone/copy effect is printed, especially if it ignores the legend rule.
According to the Rabiah Scale, which MaRo uses to identify the likelihood of revisiting planes, Alara is currently sitting at a 5, which means it will likely be revisited, but they'll have to find the right place to bring it back. I imagine if the sets returning to Lorwyn/Shadowmore and Tarkir are a success, it could bring Alara down to a 4 on the scale, since there seems to be a desire in the community to return.
I love Maelstrom Pulse, but I hate that only Amonkhet's printing has the art that feels GB (but I don't like Amonkhet font), Bloomborrow art is more suitable for WUBRG card, and other versions' art makes me think that they forgot to add either white or red in the mana cost.
Before watching the video. Alot of this top10 will have been in the "Jund" deck, I am sure. Expect Bloodbraid Elf at the top. :D Edit: ah yeah, of course pulse was first card on the list.
That's because it isn't eternal. Only Legacy and Vintage are, since all sets from eternity are legal in them. Non-rotating and eternal aren't the same thing
You say Alara Reborn was one of the weirdest sets, but I think it set a gold standard.
ahaaa
THIS!!!
Its not even punny anymore ;)
HA!
You seem to be quite the colorful character
Putrid Leech is the card that taught me life was a resource
Three color sets, when done well, are great. Esper was my first real commander deck, that I still run too. Oloro!
In the Urza combo, the thopters don't tap for mana, you tap the sword of the meek every time it comes back
Been a fan since 2018, thank you for the amazing content :)
Just so you guys know, Alara Reborn is now closer in time to the creation of the game than it is to the present day. Enjoy.

That doesn't math.
2024 - 2009 = 15 years
2009 - 1993 = 16 years
Even if you take the months into account they are even.

It would just be cards from Homelands and Teeka's Dragon. What suspense is there?
@@cax1175 I'm sure Nizzahon would find a way to make it work.

Alara was the set that got me back into magic in a big way.
For me it was Magic Origins when I was going to college. Before that I was playing Mirrodin.
Same here. I stopped playing around Weatherlight and when I came back the new set was Alara Reborn. The fact that the whole set was nothing but gold cards blew my mind.
Wizard needs to push the envelope and make a set where almost every card has 4 colors
Oh lawd, that would be a nightmare to draft. Games would go to the time limit every time 😂
I would be into this. Decide which colour you aren't drafting and go from there.
Not surprised that the standard Jund deck got a bunch of cards in this top 10.

7 years ago I sent WotC a Christmas card asking for BBE to be unbanned. That following February was a great day.
Karthus, Tyrant of Jund, was my first Commander deck I ever made.
I love pulling out maelstrom pulse in EDH to deal with tokens, no one ever knows about it lol
Man, what a callback to a better modern.
This set was the first booster box I ever bought.
Will we ever go back to alara

Did Demonic Dread not make it? I'm not sure how since it's one of the cascade combo pieces.
It is played far less than the two that made the list. So, not enough points
@NizzahonMagic okay, thanks for getting back to me.

I'm guessing Violent Outburst will be number 1 due to all the cascade decks
Wait, Maelstrom Pulse was printed in ARB??? I always thought it was from Conflux
Imagine drafting with this set 😆
Include points details for the situation where more than 1 card are at the same position 👍👍
Top 10 basic lands request 39
I rly thought Violent Outburst would have been higher
Malestrom pulse is awesome
Off topic but still in game ,Does anyone want a new set that focuses on four colors?
I don't, as it would be a nightmare to draft.
